As it turned out, all Bella had to do to turn Rachel into a blubbering mess was tell her the baby's proposed name. Rachel had said that it was the moment it finally clicked that she would be an Aunt. She didn't want to miss out on any more of Jacob's life or that of his child. Jacob and Paul explained the truth behind the wolves, imprinting, and the relationship dynamics of everyone involved. In the end, she needed proof.
Jacob made Paul phase for Rachel in the backyard because "my sister doesn't need to see my junk."
Bella had laughed so hard she nearly pissed herself.
By the end of the week, the whole pack knew about her pregnancy. Leah was angry at Bella for not confiding in her. She'd heard it in Sam's thoughts, which she claimed had made her doubly pissed. Because Jacob was the Chief's son and future Alpha, the Tribal Council needed to be informed. Since Sue was among them, Bella worried that it would cause problems between her and Charlie. He would have to be told soon.
Bella had hoped that she could hold off telling Charlie until her and Jacob's house was finished. It was a cowardly notion, she knew, but it was never meant to be. Summer storms had put a hold on construction, and Bella would start showing soon. She'd tearfully confided her fears to Billy, who reminded her that she had another home to come to if Charlie flew off the handle. However, he didn't think Charlie was going to be as angry as she feared.
She prayed he was right.

Bella's first appointment finally came, and then a sonogram was taken with Jacob by her side. Both had cried happy tears as Bella was finally able to hear the heartbeat. Overall, everything was going just fine. She rode home happily, staring at her sonogram while wondering how in the hell she was going to tell Charlie. When they returned to her house, Charlie's cruiser was parked in the drive. He was early.
"Maybe I should just hand him the picture," Bella said apprehensively. "He's going to yell anyway. I might as well get it over with."
"Yeah, let me make sure to hide his gun belt before you do that," Jacob muttered as they climbed out of the truck.
Charlie was watching TV with a can of Rainer in his hand when they walked in. "Hey, good to see you, bud," he yelled at Jacob happily.
"Yeah, you too, Charlie," Jacob said as he followed Bella into the kitchen. Once they were out of view, Bella put her arms around Jacob's waist. He was shaking, anxiety flowing from him.
"You are more afraid than I am, aren't you?" Bella asked softly.
"Charlie means a lot to me, Bells. If he's disappointed in me…" Jacob shook his head and sighed.
"We're going to do this," she said. "Let's just get it over with. We can deal with whatever comes, right? Together."
"Right," Jacob said. He took a deep breath to calm himself and sat down at the kitchen table. Bella pulled the sonogram picture out of her purse and stuck it to the refrigerator door.
"What are you doing," Jacob hissed anxiously.
"He's gonna reach for a beer when he finds out anyway, Jacob. Might as well be ready," Bella said, smirking. Jacob leaned his forearms on the table and bounced his leg nervously.
"Bells," he whispered.
"Yeah?"
Jacob whispered, "Will you make sure that the back door is unlocked just in case he tries to beat my ass and I wolf out?" Bella laughed in return but unlocked the door just in case. When she was finished making supper, she made three plates and hollered for Charlie. Feeling famished after what had already been a busy day, Bella dug into her food happily. Jacob couldn't help but grin at her enthusiasm.
Jacob had just taken a bite as Charlie strolled into the kitchen. He swallowed nervously and began to cough as Charlie walked right past the fridge and back into the front room without noticing a thing. He took a drink of soda to wash it down and couldn't help but laugh at himself.
"Oh, my god," he rubbed his hands over his face as Bella giggled.
"I'm sorry you're so nervous," she whispered. "It will be okay, though."
"You're awfully confident all of a sudden," Jacob said, grinning.
"I have food. At the moment, I am invincible," Bella joked before taking another bite.
"What are you, now? Popeye?" Jacob leaned over to kiss her cheek.
Bella looked Jacob over and laughed. "That's it. Our first Halloween, we're going to be Bluto, Olive, and Sweetpea."
"Absolutely not," he said, laughing. Bella calmly took a drink as Charlie re-entered the kitchen and swung open the refrigerator door. Jacob's eyes grew wide as Charlie bent down to grab a beer and froze. Bella's face flushed nervously as Charlie slowly stood and let the door swing shut in front of him.
Shit. This was it. Jacob began bouncing his leg again.
Charlie stared at the sonogram picture in silence for a good minute. He seemed frozen in place, his mouth open. Bella got up and stepped over next to Charlie. He ran his hand through his hair nervously as he let out a deep breath.
"Bells?" Charlie's voice cracked.
"Sarah Hope," Bella told her father. "That will be her name." He turned to her with tear-filled eyes and cupped her cheek in his palm.
"Are you okay? Is everything good? Is she healthy?" Charlie asked. Bella nodded, chuckling.
"Yeah. She's a surprise, but I already love her so much," Bella said, her hands on her belly. Charlie pulled out a kitchen chair and sat down. He finally registered an extremely nervous Jacob sitting next to him and chuckled.
"You look scared to fucking death, son," Charlie said.
"Honestly? A little bit," Jacob admitted. "I just hope you're not disappointed in us. We were careful, Charlie. At least we thought we were safe."
"Uh, yeah," Charlie said, turning to Bella. "So what happened to the birth control?"
Bella blushed. "Yeah, the antibiotics for the sinus infection I had made them ineffective."
"How far along are you," Charlie asked.
"Ten weeks," Bella said.
"And the doctors are sure there is only one?" Charlie teased. "Twins run on Jake's side."
"Definitely just one," Jacob said.
"So how long have you known? This isn't why you kids were fighting is it?" Charlie asked. Bella was surprised at how calm he was.
"No, Dad. Neither of us knew yet. I found out the day I came back from Seattle with Alice," Bella said.
"You kids have known for over three weeks?" Charlie asked.
"Uh, no," Jacob laughed. "I found out a couple of days ago. By accident, I might add."
"Seriously, Bells?" Charlie asked her incredulously.
Bella huffed. "Hey, don't gang up on me, you two. The only reason I didn't tell Jake is that he wouldn't talk to me. I was trying to let him have his space."
"She was afraid I'd flip shit," Jacob admitted to Charlie before looking up at Bella. "I'm still really sorry that you had to find out without me there to support you, Bells. That shouldn't have happened."
"So, how does this affect your plans," Charlie asked them.
"So far, it really doesn't," Bella said. "Our plans for the garage and house are still going through. We will just be having a kid, you know, ten years sooner than I'm sure either of us thought. It will be an adjustment. We have plans with Emily now for baked goods to be available for sale for the customers at the garage. Hopefully, that will help her and Sam out a tiny bit."
"Kids," Charlie said, "You have to realize how incredible what you're doing is, right? You will be providing jobs for others that you care about and serving your community. I'm proud of you guys."
"Even though I went and did the only thing you've ever asked me not to do?" Bella teased.
"Yes. I get to be a grandpa while I'm still good-looking. I don't even care," he said, laughing. "All I can say, kids, is shit happens. Honestly, now that it's happened, I'm even surprised that I'm not mad. I'm not, though. I just want you two to have good lives." He let out another deep breath before pulling out his cell phone. Charlie walked over and took a picture of the sonogram, chuckling.
"So, who can I tell?" Charlie asked.
"Gossip," Bella said as Jacob laughed. "Tell whoever you want, Dad. Just don't send the picture to Billy. We're going over there later."
"Does he know?" Charlie asked.
"Yeah. He guessed, actually," Bella admitted. "I swore him to secrecy until I could tell you both."
"That fucker knew first, huh? I bet half the reservation knows already, don't they," Charlie asked and laughed.
"Sue doesn't," Bella said. Charlie grinned.
"Good!" He walked into the front room, dialing his phone.

Jacob couldn't believe their good luck. Telling Charlie was probably the scariest moment of his life, and that was saying something. When it was over with, he was relieved that Billy already knew and he didn't have to go through that shit twice, though he felt awful for Bella.
The thought of being a father scared Jacob to death. He hadn't wanted to leave Bella's side since he found out. He had lain with his ear pressed to her abdomen whenever he could over the last few days. At one point, Charlie had walked in on them on Bella's bed, thankfully fully clothed. Jacob had his arms wrapped around her waist and his ear to her belly. Bella was staring at him happily as the flash went off on Charlie's cell phone. He left the room chuckling, sending the picture to god knew who.
"I think becoming a grandfather has turned my dad into an elderly woman," Bella said.
"Yeah," Jacob laughed. "Apparently, Billy can't stop crying, either. We're going to have to hide the bottle of Wild Turkey this year." Jacob had to let Bella get up after that.
Pee break.
Now that Rachel knew the truth, she and Paul seemed to have worked things out. Turns out that blunt honesty worked best with Rachel all along. Her attitude toward Bella had changed entirely as well. Bella was bummed that Leah was still angry with her. She was looking forward to the next bonfire with the Council so that they'd be forced to be in the same place.
When they finally had some good weather, Jacob surprised Bella by showing up at her house on the motorcycle. She hopped around happily, excited to ride again after so long. They needed to pay Rose and Emmett a visit, and Bella wanted to show everyone her sonogram picture. Now, more than ever, Jacob didn't want Bella to be around Edward alone. Surprisingly, she agreed. Bella had sighed happily as she climbed onto the back of his motorcycle. Jacob kickstarted the bike and Bella leaned in to kiss the side of his neck as he sat down. She leaned her cheek against his back and wrapped her arms around his waist. He hugged her arms to him for a moment, leaning back into her, too. Bella still hadn't tried to force him to talk about anything he wasn't ready to. She was still reluctant to talk about the battle, though she would listen willingly to whatever he had to say. Jacob had finally begun to open up to Emmett and Sam about the Mike situation.
Jacob kept his speed low, afraid to jostle her around too much. It was a good bike, but the ride wasn't always the smoothest. He couldn't help but think of Bella sprawled naked over the gas tank.
Apparently, she feels the same, Jacob thought as she pushed her hands up the front of his shirt, rubbing his abs.
"Maybe after we visit Rose and Emmett, we can take a ride someplace quiet," he teased.
Bella moaned, sliding one hand down to grip his inner thigh. "That sounds like a good plan," she said, her voice thick with lust. Jacob couldn't help but chuckle.
"Pregnancy hormones are making you extra horny, aren't they?" he asked bluntly.
"As a matter of fact," she huffed, and he laughed.
"Now that's a problem I think I can help you handle."

Emmett was waiting outside for them as they arrived, grinning as he watched Bella swing her jean-clad leg over the back of the bike.
"My little one really is a biker chick now, huh?" Emmett teased her.
"I told you," she laughed.
"You said you drive them, though," Emmett challenged her.
"She does," Jacob chuckled. "She's actually gotten pretty good, too. Took a few bumps and bruises, but she's a quick learner."
"My little one with bumps and bruises," Emmett teased sarcastically. "Never." Jacob couldn't help but grin as she giggled.
I feel like I'm falling for her all over again, he thought as he watched her bantering with Emmett.
"Okay," Bella said, reaching for the sonogram picture. "You're the first Cullen to see this, Emmett," she said as she handed it to him.
"Technically, I'm a McCarty," he teased before staring down at the sonogram. He pulled her in for a quick hug, handing it back.
"Congrats, bro," he said to Jacob and slapped him on the back. Bella giggled.
"What?" He challenged her.
"You, acting all macho in front of Jacob. 'Rosie, my baby is having a baby," she mocked him.
"Oh, whatever," Emmett said and scoffed, though he couldn't stop grinning. He leaned toward Jake and whispered, "My baby's having a baby." Jacob cracked up laughing.
"Okay," Bella said, grinning. "Let's go, show mom before she tackles me to see it." She sighed and headed into the house to find Esme.
"You okay, man?" Emmett asked him once she was inside.
"Yeah. Scared shitless, but happy, too. It's a fucked up feeling," Jacob said, chuckling.
"I bet it is," Emmett said. "We're happy for you guys. We're here if you need anything, but you know that, right?"
"I know, and I appreciate it. I really do," Jacob said. "You and Rose have already done so much. I'll just be glad to get to work to start paying things off. Feel like I'm accomplishing something, you know?"
"Goals are good, dude. We're lucky around here with a psychic sister to see the stock market changes," Emmett laughed.
"Seriously," Jacob asked in surprise.
"Oh, dude, Alice is a little gold mine. If you and Bella ever get a little nest egg going, have Alice invest it for you. I'm serious," Emmett said, laughing.
"I will definitely consider it," Jacob laughed as he followed Emmett into the house.
The family, as usual, sat around the main room of the house. They were passing around the sonogram picture, chatting excitedly.
To his surprise, Jasper walked up to Jacob happily and shook his hand. "Congrats, Dad," he said, grinning. Jacob thanked him and took his seat next to Bella. He couldn't help but smile at her current happiness. People say pregnant women glow, but Bella was radiant. Everything he had ever wanted was sitting in front of him. His plans for the future falling into place like the bricks of a wall.
A foundation.
Bella's words came back to him from a few days before, "You are my home, Jacob. I chose you. With or without any imprint.
She chose you, too, Jacob. She's our Hope. Sarah Hope."
I'm going to marry this girl.
A door slammed upstairs. Everyone turned toward Edward's corner of the house. Jacob managed to keep a straight face as Bella looked at him questioningly. He could tell that she was silently asking him what he'd said to piss Edward off. He couldn't hold back his smirk as he shrugged, feigning ignorance.
Nothing that wasn't the truth. Bloodsucker needs to stay out of my head, anyway.
Bella smiled as she looked him over skeptically.
"What are you doing, Jas?" Alice asked.
"Watching these two have an entire conversation without a single word," Jasper said, chuckling. "I don't often see connections like yours outside of vampire relationships," he explained to Jacob. "It's kind of fun to watch."
"The imprint didn't really change how we interact," Jacob said, chuckling. "We've always read each other's emotions well. It's talking about shit out loud that we have a hard time with."
"It's true," Bella said and reached over to hold Jacob's hand. "The imprint just makes it harder to be apart. It hurts. Physically."
"It does," Jacob admitted. He looked at Emmett, grinning. "I don't know if I could do it again."
"Stay away so long?" Emmett asked.
"Yeah," Jacob said. "I've barely been away from her since she came and found me."
"Searched you out, did she?" Emmett teased, grinning at Bella. She blushed a deep red, and he assumed Bella was thinking about what had taken place in the garage.
"She did. I told you she would," Jacob chuckled.
Whoops. Bella looked up at her brother in surprise.
"Bro," Emmett grumbled.
"Emmett, did you know where Jacob was?" Bella asked. The others looked around at each other, and it was evident that no one had any clue he had known.
Again, proving to be a trustworthy friend.
"Not where he was staying, but we had contact, yeah," Emmett admitted, giving Jacob a side-eye. Bella laughed.
"I'm not mad, Em. Thanks for looking out for him," Bella said, shooting Jacob a wink.
Well, she did say she wanted us to be friends, Jacob chuckled to himself.
"Did you guys talk about me?" Bella teased Emmett.
"No, sis. We did not. Your business is your business," he said firmly. Jacob could see the love for her brother then, and he was grateful. He knew, without a doubt, that between the pack and Emmett, he'd have the most protected imprint that ever existed. Even if further danger came for them someday, Bella would always be defended by shapeshifter and vampire alike.
There has to be a purpose for all of this, Jacob thought, but what? To create peace? To protect the future generations of the tribe? Hell, Emmett and Rose are immortal. The Quilluetes would have trustworthy protection guaranteed for centuries if they needed it. Not to mention the kind of change that would come to the pack with the completion of the garage. Jacob thought that patrols would need to be cut down and divided with work hours at the garage. He wanted to be able to pay the wolves for patrolling as well. After all, just because it was something they were born to do, didn't mean their hard work protecting the tribe didn't deserve to be paid for. Their responsibilities kept them from being able to keep the kind of hours needed to work a full-time job.
Soldiers got paid for the work they put in. Why couldn't the pack?
The reservation might not be able to afford such ideas, but if Jacob and Bella became independently wealthy, they could spread the excess throughout the community.
It was an Alpha's job to take care of his pack. For that, Jacob had begun to dream big.
Emmett's tip about investing through Alice had only increased his ideas for improving the quality of life for his pack. Those were thoughts for the future, though. He and Bella would have to pay off this giant loan they were undertaking and start on some kind of savings before he could accomplish any of those ideas.
Not to mention discussing them with Bella, Embry, and the rest of the pack.
The only real downside to the connection is triggering more phasing, but if they move from the area, that should stop again. What is done is done, but this connection could effect positive changes for many people later on.
It was a double-edged sword.
When they left the Cullen house, Jacob drove out to the old trails he'd taught Bella to ride on. The property was overgrown and well hidden. Discreet. She squeezed his waist, grinning excitedly as they tore down the old trail. He stopped at one of their well-used time-out points. Bella climbed down from the bike and walked around for a moment, smiling.
"I love this place," she said.
"I know you do," Jacob smiled wickedly as he cupped her cheek with his palm. "That's why we're here."
