Does anyone eat oreos cookie first? Well that is this chapter. Next week we get the cream since it took some extra time writing it. Let me know what you think!? Thank YOU for reading!
Starfire vanishing in a blink of an eye was not an ideal scenario, but as soon as I saw Kyd Wykkyd I knew it was in the realm of possibility. With them gone it was just Miss Friday and I with the faceless barkeep in a club that was far larger than it looked from outside.
"Well Mr. Fallen, what would you like out of us renting Miss Ember's services?" Well now it felt like I was something I wasn't. Red X's earlier concerns popped up in my head.
"A clean quarter a week, and to know who she is seeing." Well I was steering into the skid. "I like to keep records." Though I knew this could be futile. They had snatched her. This was a formality that could end with her laughing in my face and worse.
"I can offer the money, but you can just put my name in you records. I am sure she will be seeing plenty of me as well." She said with a smile that seemed quite mischievous. I had no chips to bargain with so I had to accept the offer since I did not know where she went.
"Fine, though I would like to know when she will be back." I needed something to cling too before my brain caught up to the fact Starfire had been taken and I had no clue where or by who.
"I doubt it will be more than a few hours. This is just a pre-test. Though she will need to return consistently if…" She cut off and I was very tempted to throw something like that wine glass she was getting refilled. "If she wants to return."
"That will be up to her." I said and tried to decide if it would be better for me to wait or do something to prepare for a search.
"Really now? You have her so well trained and attached I would assume you would have the answer now. You are the brains and is Mr. Red X the heart? "I didn't want to have this conversation, but I knew that there might be clues if I kept her talking.
"Jealous?" I asked since I had heard Red X imply she had a crush on Ember and it seemed possible in my interactions as well. Though I did not want to be too uncivil since she was at least playing that way.
"Underwhelmed more so." She took a sip. "Something so pretty deserves to be shown off and I would love to be the one to put her on display. She wastes herself on your decisions and Red X will be a waste upon her attention." Well that was not what I would call civil. "Hmm maybe that is enough." She said to her glass and set it aside. I could not be offended by villain mentality that I was not using her as a weapon. I was holding her away safe.
"At least other people have a different opinion." I was still trying to keep my cool and not focus on her calling me a waste.
"Some people need to take better care of their toys. Make sure they share them with the right people." She shot back my way. I wasn't getting any ground here.
"Maybe I can trust that it will always come back." I had to trust all of Starfire's promises.
"It will, today. Though it might become less likely if someone plays with her better." She said and I felt like that was a closing statement. "You can wait here by yourself, you might as well get some practice." She took her wine glass and ascended up to the room where we normally met. Though as soon as she closed the door all the lights went down. Great.
Well I would at least be able to track her as long as they didn't find the tracker I had placed at the base of her braid. She didn't know it was there either, I just had to hope they were secure enough in her being teleported they didn't search too deep. She was coated in so much metal anyways. I decided that I was not doing anything productive by sitting in the dark so I left to make some calls.
I did not go back to the Tower, but went back to the hiding spot I used Friday wanting to be close in case she returned suddenly. I had left our pulse tracker on the bar counter so she just push the button when she came back and I could be there. I updated Batman and the other Leaguers that she had been teleported and that while money had not exchanged yet, it would soon. The amount was related to a bigger charge when it came to sentencing. I didn't know what would stick in terms of crimes once this situation blew up, but that was a big one.
It had been a bit of a relief when the tracker said connecting, but as it swiftly switched positions from Salt Lake to Okinawa to Sofia. They must have some sort of scrambler in effect. Dammit. She could be anywhere and truly hidden thanks to Wykkyd. No wonder Miss Friday had been so bold, she had captured my queen and there were little I could do to get out of check.
No. I just had to keep thinking of ways to stay confident I could find her. They couldn't be treating her badly if they wanted her to return and not destroy whatever "Classroom". I kept the tracker on seeing as if there was a pattern or if a certain location would repeat. I had not garnered the name of who we were working for. I knew it could not be Miss Friday, she was too exposed and involved. Though I did not have a face match for her in any databases and her alias was not popping up either. She was clean, maybe wiped clean, but still clean.
I wish the timeline had been set more in stone as I would just be in dread the entire time, probably her plan to antagonize me. She had also tried to get a rise out of me by bringing up Red X. I had worked on keeping that part of my feelings in check. She was right when it just hurt me, but dammit. I could finally have her as mine and If I only got a year with her, I did not want to share. If other people besides me were seeing it, did it make it more true? She had left her bag on my bike since she knew it would likely be searched. I wanted to resist checking her burner phone, but I needed something to distract me.
Don't die
That had been the last message he had sent her and I decided that was enough. They had their inside joke, and whatever else above it would just be more of the same. He had to be in the same boat as me, just waiting for a bite to break up this wait. I almost felt sorry for him, but almost was far enough.
Though of course there couldn't be a quiet day as an alert popped up on actual communicator. It was Kitten Moth which just brought me frustration since I would have to figure out a way to handle her move from my spot. With both of our ladies gone I couldn't leave it just to the two of them without back up. Of course she was on the opposite end of town. Lucky day indeed.

Kitten Moth had to be the most frustrating woman I had ever met. She was certainly no angel, which is why she definitely didn't need her wings repaired. It took longer than it should have to subdue her with both our fliers elsewhere. Though it happened, just took a hippo and gravity to accomplish. Though now I had to get back into the Fallen uniform and hopefully pick up Starfire before Beast Boy and Cyborg dug into me with questions.
I had said she had gotten separated from me and didn't have a communicator on her, but I knew my lie wasn't at full capacity. I was worried about what I would find when she came back. If she would come back… The pager had yet to go off, but I was now content to just wait there and hope. I was almost on my way back to the club when the pager went off assuring me of her location back. I sped and rode hard hoping that she was in one piece. I barely made it to a stop before I was flying off and bursting through the doors.
Starfire was sitting on top of the bar with Miss Friday sitting very in the seat directly below seeming to play with the end of her braid and eating some sort of platter. With my entrance gave it a snapping tug. It brought her head down to her level as Starfire did not fight it and quickly a necklace was clasped around her neck. This caused Starfire to jerk and break away from whatever she whispered in her ear. I used some speed to close the distance. She immediately lifted her legs in an arc and collided with me as she noticed my return. We both stumbled against the bar in a little less grace than I preferred, but I could not counteract her inertia.
"I guess that is the end of our conversation. Punctuality is a blessing and a curse. What a pity." Miss Friday said with some of the snark she had our last encounter. "Miss Ember please take consideration to what we discussed, privately."
"I shall. When am I expected again?" Starfire's composure seemed to return only after she had wrapped her hand around my thumb and straightened us.
"We will stay in contact with you through the necklace, it will notify you when you are summoned. I would recommend finding alternative transport we could need you at all hours of the night." Miss Friday said and I looked behind me to see Starfire gripping the necklace. I could not see the look in her eyes, but knew the neck was a sensitive place that she did not often want touched by other people. "I would keep it on as mentioned punctuality is important. It looks quite lovely on you anyways, Miss Ember."
"Are you finished?" I just wanted to go home and make sure she wasn't injured. She seemed to be okay, but it was hard to read her pain level like this.
"I am satisfied for now. I will see you soon Miss Ember." She said and waved a hand that had blue fingertips. With a weak returning wave, Starfire made the choice to lift me so she could escape at full speed. I let her get us out of the door before struggling and having her set me down.
"Are you okay?" I asked though like always it was not the right question to ask.
"I am not hurt badly, but I am other things." I caught that she was only wearing one bangle now as she tugged on the new accessory around her neck. I knew she was right that we needed to go home, but I wanted to be able to quell the tremor in her hand now. Panic laced her words. I pulled her forehead down to meet mine and grabbed both of her hands trying to get her whole focus on me in the present.
"I was so worried you would not come back." I spoke my own relief that she was not hurt and indeed back in arms.
"I believe I will remain safe as long as they need me, but that may quickly change. This is too much." I knew by this she was referring to the necklace. She wrapped her arms around me and leaned into me. It required me to support her and in this instance I could.
