Chapter 13

Eating for two

Tris' POV

We walk out of the doctor's office hand in hand with the ultrasound pictures of the baby tucked in the back of Tobias' jeans pocket. It takes everything in me to keep my emotions at bay. I admit it's really hard, especially when all I want to do right now is scream out "I'm pregnant!" But I somehow keep myself under control, having a hard time understanding how Tobias is always able to keep the straight face that he always does. I need to ask him one day how that "Four mask" works. I notice even though my steps are different, every step that I take is more carefully calculated and more aware. My hand just wants nothing more than to cover my stomach and rub where my baby is, but I fight to remain in control of myself and my hand. I know how important it is to Tobias that we be the ones to tell everyone about the baby this time. Last time, I recall Tobias being very frustrated when everyone acted like it was already old news. Although they were happy, Tobias wanted to see the shock on everyone's faces when he told them that he actually knocked me up.

Tobias opens the back door to the van for me. I effortlessly climb in, wondering what it is going to be like when I'm way further along than this and I can't bend my body as easily. Tobias closes the door and climbs into the front seat himself when he secures my door.

"So what's the verdict? Are you dying?" Uriah says, joking. I glance at my husband who is glaring at Uriah. Clearly he hasn't forgiven him yet for the whole stabbing me in the shoulder thing. Uriah wouldn't even dare to go near him for weeks, swearing that he was afraid that the big bad Four might kill him.

Flashback

"Hey," Uriah says in a whispered tone. I turn around expecting him to be behind me, but find that he isn't. I look around the room, trying to figure out where he is hiding now. I finally spot him behind the wall that divides the kitchen from the dining room. I can't help the laugh that escapes me. Seriously? It's been a week.

"Uriah, what are you doing?" I ask when I can finally breathe again from laughing. "You know you don't have to hide," I say, as I turn back around, continuing to make myself a sandwich. My stomach has been really off lately, I'm hoping a light sandwich will do me some good.

"So where is that scary husband of yours?" Uriah asks, slowly coming around the wall as he glances all around the room to make sure the coast is indeed clear. His movements remind me of a scared cat.

"Off doing scary husband things, I guess," I answer, shaking my head from side to side. Uriah can be so stupid at times. It took a few weeks to pass and a good talking to from Tobias to Uriah before Marlene and I both felt comfortable about leaving them alone together again.

Flashback Ends

"Pull over at the hardware store, would ya? We need a few things, since we are out here we might as well get them now," Tobias says, pointing towards the store. Uriah nods, pulling over at the closest parking spot available. I think to myself for a moment, not sure what he is talking about. I didn't know we needed things, I could have gotten them earlier this morning when me and the girls were out getting the food. It would have saved us a trip and we wouldn't of had a reason to come this way for a second time. "Here," Tobias says, handing Uri a list that he just wrote down. He glances back at me with a mischievous smirk on his face, hinting to me that he has a plan.

"Alright. You're not coming?" Uriah asks, as he opens the driver seat door.

"Yeah, in a minute, but first I need to run next door to get something," Tobias says, getting out of his door and opening the back door for me. He holds his hand out for me to take, helping me out of the van. "Go with him, keep him busy," Tobias whispers in my ear. His voice sounds all amused and excited at the same time. I nod my head, walking behind Uriah once Tobias releases me. Funny, the only "store" that is next door is a printing store and the Owl Diner.

I continue to walk with Uriah, up and down, down and up the freaking aisles. I swear if we continue to walk up and down these aisles one more time, I might just puke on Uriah. Everything begins to look the same to me, as he is searching for the right rope, light bulb and pipes. Seriously? I check my watch again for the hundredth time since we have been in here. It's been over an hour, where could Tobias have gone? To the moon?

"What about this one?" Uriah asks, picking up yet another door knob in his hand.

"That's fine," I say, in my grumpy state.

"What's wrong? Are you not feeling well again?" He asks, placing the damn door knob back on the shelf and going for yet another one.

"Yup," I say, popping at the "P."

"Did the Doctor not give you anything for the flu? Like Theraflu or something?" He asks, looking at the knob in his hand, turning it around and examining it. Its a fucking doorknob for crying out loud. Are you new to this earth or did they not have doorknobs where you were raised? Come on!

"Nope. He said I didn't need it," I answer…Well technically that's true…It's morning sickness for crying out loud. Hopefully it will die out sooner rather than later.

"Hey guys. Did you get everything?" Tobias asks, coming from behind us. I glance down at his right hand that is holding onto a grey bag. The bag is plain, not giving anything away.

"Yeah, just about. Although Tris is feeling sick again. Are you sure that Doctor said she couldn't take anything like Theraflu?" Uriah turns to ask Tobias, gesturing towards me as if I'm not even here. Great, nothing annoys me more.

"Nah, the doctor said something about waiting too long and that it will be all over soon," Tobias answers for me. I feel my blood threatening to boil over as I picture dunking one if not both of their heads in the toilet that I saw on aisle four, too bad the plumbing is not running in them.

We finally reach the cabin just as my last shred of energy and willpower dies down. I swear if I don't get out of this van soon I will either pass out, or attack Uriah and Tobias. Tobias climbs out and just like before opens my door for me and helps me out. I thank him, no doubt I probably would have ended up on my face if he didn't help me. I definitely need a nap.

I perk up a little, glancing down at the grey bag that Tobias is holding again. He never did show or tell me what he was up to.

"Ready?" He asks, whispering into my ear. I nod and smile. To tell everyone about our little bundle of joy? Of course I'm ready.

"Maddy, Ethan!" Tobias calls out, knowing that our two little monsters will make their way towards us. Ethan is the first one to reach us, as Maddy is still waddling herself over to us. Ethan hugs his father as Maddy comes to me with her arms open wide for me to carry her. I don't give it a second thought, it won't be long before I can no longer lift her. "Mommy and Daddy have something for you." They both light up at the anticipation of what it might be.

"Yay, spise," Maddy says, clapping her hands. I laugh at her attempt of trying to say the word surprise. I follow Tobias' lead, rushing the kids upstairs and into our bedroom. We tell the kids in secret first, telling them that we are surprising the others with the news.

"Can we mane it Olaf?" Maddy asks, innocently. Tobias and I both laugh at Maddy's name choice for the baby. Ethan, on the other hand, isn't very happy about the news.

"Do I have to share my dinosaurs with it too?" Ethan asks, pouting. Tobias is the one taking the initiative on that question, as he sits on the edge of the bed with Ethan and explains that although we expect him to share and be the big brother, we understand that he too needs his things. We will do what we can to make sure that happens. Ethan smiles, saying as long as he can keep his dinos safe, he will be happy being a big brother again. Tobias finally opens the bag showing us just what he has in store for our little surprise news. I can't help but laugh at the site before me.

"May we have your attention please! I present to you... Ms. Maddy and Mr. Ethan," Tobias says loudly as he and I stay out of sight from the others. We let Ethan walk into the kitchen, holding his little sister's hand and we patiently wait a few seconds before we walk in behind them. We try to act natural waiting to see who will notice our tee shirts first.

"OMG how cute, you guys got tee shirts with sayings on them…" Shauna says, laughing. She looks at them, but not really paying any attention to the words on them.

"Wait, the printers messed up on Maddy's shirt…" Marlene says, taking a closer look at the kids' shirts. "Maddy's shirt says big sister," she says, reading off of the shirt. "And Ethan says… OMG"

"What?" Zeke asks, still completely unaware of the situation.

"Big brother again!" Shauna says, jumping up and down excitedly. Then they all look towards Tobias' and my shirt… looking at the words on our shirts. They all break out into laughter as they read off Tobias' shirt that says "On the run and my sperm still works."

"Holy shit!' Zeke says, as he puts two and two together.

"No fucking way," Uriah says. "Knocked up by this guy." Uriah finishes reading my tee shirt. He gestures in the direction of the arrow that is on my shirt that is pointing in Tobias' direction. They all jump in, excited by the news of our third bundle of joy.

"So that's what the hell you were doing all that time?" Uriah says, still trying to put everything together.

"Yes Einstein, that is what I was doing," he says.

"Hey Tris… You know you can really mess with people when you get really pregnant," Uriah begins to explain, placing his arms in the air forming a very pregnant stomach in front of him when he says "really pregnant." He laughs at his own stupidity as he continues. "When people come up to you and congratulate you, just ask them for what? Like you totally don't know what the hell they are talking about. We can record their faces, it would be so funny," Uriah continues to laugh, the only one that laughs with him of course is his brother. Figures.

"Or. Or. Or," Zeke says, patting his brother's chest. "She can stand next to strange men with the same tee shirt on that says "got knocked up by this guy" and let the wife get all mad…" Oh jeez.

"Alright… that's enough you two..." Tobias tries to say, but it's no use, the Pedrads are off and there is no stopping them now.

Time has flown by since the day that Tobias and I found out we were expecting. Although Tobias and I had been training way before we found out the news, Tobias has slowed down on the training tremendously, which I was partly grateful for as the morning sickness and exhaustion took a major toll on me. Even though it only lasted a few weeks, thankfully, it felt like agrees. I don't remember feeling so horrible with Ethan or Maddy but this one…. It's taking its cake and eating it too. Tobias helped as much as he could during those weeks by taking the kids more, letting me sleep in, keeping us well stocked on ginger ale and crackers at all times, he even went as far as holding my hair back while I would vomit or he would even rub my belly and soothe the baby with his soft voice hoping that it would help. Although we do have Uriah who does not get this whole baby thing, one morning he served us sausage and eggs and I just about lost my stomach all over the breakfast table not being able to make it fast enough to even turn my head.

It just about drove Tobias insane with worry for both me and the baby, as he insisted that he take me back to the Doctor long before our next appointment was due. Although the Doctor assured us it was just typical pregnancy symptoms and nothing to worry about, he did run some extra tests to calm my worry wart of a husband, which I was extremely thankful for.

Just like the Doctor said, the morning sickness did slowly ease up. Every day I woke up feeling a little better and a little more like myself, well minus the growing belly, that is. Tobias seems to love my belly more and more each day as he rubs it more, places a protective hand on it, or even kisses it goodnight sweetly. I remember him doing similar things when I was pregnant with Maddy, he was so scared and thrilled at the same time about us expecting a baby, our baby that I would wake up to him talking to our baby through my stomach.

Last week we finally felt the little alien that continues to move around and kick me from within. I laughed every time, as the sensation feels like little bubbles popping within me. Maddy and Ethan both tried so hard to feel the baby kick, each time they got a little discouraged or worried that the baby must not like them because they can't feel him or her. Tobias and I tried to explain to them every time that the baby was still too small to feel from the outside yet, but soon the baby would feel them.

Which leads us to today, I sit down on the examining table fully clothed. The Doctor was nice enough to allow us to bring in Ethan and Maddy for the big reveal of what we are indeed having, a boy or a girl. Tobias and I have both expressed what we both think it is… Tobias hopes for another girl to spoil. He jokes about how it would please him and Ethan to be surrounded by girls. I, on the other hand, hope for another boy. Although I love my girl, boys are definitely easier to please and content with the smallest things. That and I wouldn't mind having a mini Tobias running around, causing all sorts of chaos in the house. I'm sitting here 20 weeks pregnant and dying to know for sure just like everyone else. Ethan doesn't really have an opinion as long as he or she doesn't touch his t-rex. On the other hand Maddy would love another girl to play with. I wish there was a way to please everyone, but I guess within time we will. Tobias and I always spoke about having a large family. I have no doubt this baby will not be our last…

"So how are we all doing today?" Doctor Parker asks as he comes in smiling. The same nurse that I have yet to learn the name of walks in right behind him. She smiles politely and greets the kids, handing each one of them a lollipop and a sticker. They smile, taking their seats, Ethan sits next to Tobias on the chairs next to me, while Maddy sits on her daddy's lap.

"So who wants a boy and who wants a girl?" The Doctor asks, looking around the room. Ethan and Maddy both yell out what they want most, I can't help but smile and laugh at their innocence. Tobias laughs at the same time as I do. "Well let's all take a look and see here," Doctor Parker says, I raise my shirt and lower the hem of my pants, as he squirts the very cold gel on my belly. We all wait patiently as the doctor slides the wand over my stomach. We stare at the monitor, smiling at the baby that appears on it.

"AWE, is that babi?" Maddy asks, all cute.

"Well that's interesting," Ethan calls out.

"Yes, that is the baby. Isn't it cool that we can see him or her?" The Doctor asks, giving attention back to our two little ones. "The baby is growing great, right on schedule, the heartbeat is 162," he says, as he continues to measure the baby from every angle. "Alright are we sure we want to know the sex of the baby?" He asks. Both Tobias and I yell out yes at the same time. I'm just about ready to jump out of my own skin, wanting nothing more than to know.

"Well congratulations, it's a boy.!" He says, smiling. A boy, another boy…

"Is he...He is a he?" Tobias stutters. As Maddy pouts that it's not a girl.

"HE better not touch my dinos," Ethan says. Well at least they are not asking me anything too awkward yet.

"We will love him no matter what… Because he is your little brother and a part of this family," Tobias says, easing both of the kids. "We will share with him everything that we have because we are a family, and family means we love each other and never leave anyone behind. I love this man so much.
