Chapter 38: Bubble Gum
The day had been a quiet one. Most days were, actually, which you thought was strange. You figured that there would be missions all of the time and a whole bunch of adventure. But, everyone seemed really laid back. There weren't any real threats, only a few problems that the other recruits managed. The 'senior' Avengers usually just hung around the complex as though it were their retirement home.
You had tried picking up drawing again. In your memories, you tried drawing, but it didn't really work. So, you decided that it would be a good time to practice. You grabbed some supplies from your desk, and then, you noticed a package of gum stuffed in the back. The top was ripped open, exposing four sticks. Shrugging, you grabbed it, wondering if it added any super powers. Everything in your desk seemed to have a hidden meaning. Lately, as you walk around your room, you have been wondering about going on some missions. You are about to leave your room, when you look back at the desk.
You walk towards the desk and gently pull open the draw with the handgun in it. Next to the hand gun is the hover-board bracelet. But, you are looking at the gun. You can see blue lines adding detail to the weapon. You gently run a finger down the handle, tracing one of the lines. For a brief moment, you get a flash of a memory. One of you training with Natasha.
You both were in the gun range, wearing eye and ear protection. You watch in fascination as Natasha easily shoots all of the rounds in her gun. Her grouping is amazing, and from a distance, it looks as though there is only one whole in the target.
"All right," she says, turning to you after holstering her gun. "You're turn.
You look nervously at your target. Pistols were never your strong suit. You knew enough about guns: muzzle control, finger off the trigger, simple rules like that. But whenever you actually held the gun, it was a little intimidating.
You slowly raise the gun, but Natasha stops you.
"This leg slightly in front. Put 80% of weight on it."
"Eighty percent?" you ask in confusion.
"Most of your weight, but enough that you aren't knocked off balance," she says. "Finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. Keep eyes open. Dominant hand around the handle, other hand cupping the bottom. Relax. It won't explode."
Natasha helps you to cock the gun, and she improves your stance. The gun is a semi-automatic pistol so that you don't have to continually cock it to shoot it.
You can't help but breathe shakily. Natasha is so good, how can you ever be like that? You focus solely on the target before gently squeezing the trigger. It barely takes any pressure before the gun shoots, jerking in your hands so fast that you almost drop it.
"Not bad," Natasha says. "You didn't drop it. Never drop a gun. It could cause a miss-fire."
You nod, looking at the target. You shake your head. "I didn't even get close to the center."
"Hey," she says, looking at you. "Everyone starts from somewhere. It's all right to start at the bottom. What matters is how hard you work to climb up."
You give her a soft smile before aiming again.
You blink, as you come out of the memory. This one felt different from the ones Loki showed you. It seemed more personal and less like a movie. This time, when you run your fingers over the gun, you know that you will hit whatever you are aiming at. You wonder if you have any other memories.
You look around your room at all of the places with secret compartments. Then, there is one place which comes to mind.
You quickly jog over to your closet, opening it up and peering inside. The wall on the back is completely blank. Before getting your memories, you felt something behind there. You wondered what it was, but you couldn't investigate. Now, you have all of the time in the world. You walk past the racks of blue, green, and gray clothes. The wall is stainless steel metal. There isn't any blemishes on it, and you gently press a hand on it.
Nothing happens.
Frowning, you put both of your hands on the metal and push with all of your might. Suddenly, a blue light scans down the length of the wall, so quickly that your reflexes don't even have time to make you jump away.
The wall suddenly moves to the side to show a dimly lit room. Everything is black in the room, but a faint blue glow gives it just enough light for you to see buy.
Tentatively, you walk inside. It has the same smell like a new car. There are a few computers on the wall and two key-boards. Next to the computers are several bracelets, similar to the hover-board one. You can tell that they each have hover boards, but some are a little different from the others but mostly in color. There is one bracelet that is different from the others. Instead of silver, green, and blue, it is purple and black. You touch it, thinking it is pretty, but you guess that it is your stealth board.
You look next to the bracelets, and an excited smile breaks out on your face.
There is your suit.
The superhero suit that you used to fight Loki, Ultron, and Thanos. You never had more than one, since it was enough. It doesn't even have any blemishes on it. It looks as though it was newly made. Frost still coats the arms and cuffs of the legs, and green and blue lines trace up it. There is a large snowflake emblem on the chest which splits in half because of the v-neck.
You rub the fabric between your fingers, feeling the cool texture. It feels very natural. Around the suit is several other gadgets that look like they belong in a comic book. Metal snowflake throwing stars. Several knives and other things which you have no idea how they work or what they are.
You take a step back and realize that that isn't the only suit. To the right of your normal superhero suit is a black and purple stealth suit. It has more leather than the other one and the neck-line is higher. It is sleeveless, but it is still modest and really, really cool!
You look at all of the stuff in your secret layer. No wonder you felt a pull to this room!
You wonder if there is really anything which you can do with this stuff? You guess that there really isn't until you ask Steve, but he is out today.
You decide to let this all sit until he gets back later tonight.
As soon as you exit the room, the wall slides back into place, and you hear heavy bolts slide into place. Cool!
You try not to feel too excited as you grab your drawing stuff and bubble gum and walk down the stairs. But, you can't help but feel a tickle going down your spine when you think of the secret room. You try to control your features as you plop onto the couch and open your notebook. You grab two sticks of peppermint gum, loving the sharp taste of them. You chew quietly as you try to draw yourself in your suit. You think that the stealth suit is super cool, but your main suit fits you better. You doodle for a while, and you are so into your drawings that you don't even realize that Thor has walked up behind you.
"Your drawings are very well done," he congratulates, causing you to nearly jump out of your skin.
"Ah!" you yelp in surprise. "Don't scare me like that!"
"I am sorry, I did not mean to," he says, his deep voice booming around the room. "I merely wanted to tell you that your drawings are pleasant."
"Oh, well, thanks," you say, feeling a little guilty.
Thor then frowns. "I smell peppermint," he says, his eyebrows drawing together.
"Oh," you laugh, holding up the last few sticks of gum. "It's my gum." You smack your gum for emphasis.
Thor's eyes trail on the candy and light up at the thought of it.
"Do you want some?" you ask, waving it around.
Thor blinks out of his trance and shrugs. "If you insist," he says, giving you a teasing smile.
"Here," you say, handing him two sticks.
He eagerly takes off the wrapping and takes a deep breath. "That smells amazing!" he says, popping the gum into his mouth. He chews happily for a few seconds before his smile starts to fade as he rolls the gum around in his mouth. He continues chewing, giving you an obviously fake smile.
"Do you not like it?" you ask.
"No," he says around the candy. "But…"
He chews again, giving a slight grimace.
"But what?" you ask.
"But, it won't go away," he says, chewing extra hard.
You purse your lips. "What do you mean?"
"It doesn't go away. I have been chewing and sucking on it, and it is still there."
"Oh," you say finally understanding. "This isn't like normal candy that slowly disintegrates in your mouth. It's supposed to stay there. You can chew on it for hours!"
"Huh," he says, still sounding concerned. "Why?"
You shrug. "I don't know, I guess it's just what you do," you explain.
He nods thoughtfully. "Okay." He smacks the gum.
"Here, I'll show you how to blow a bubble!" you say. He seems to perk up at that. "All right, roll it around until it is flattish," you say, trying to show him how. It is kind of hard to, and it takes him a few times to get it right. "Then place it on the tip of your tongue. Bite down a bit with your teeth and blow." You quickly show him how to do it.
He tries, and you can see the gum inflate a little, but that is it. He tries a few more times, and on his fifth try, he gets a pretty good bubble. It pops and he looks at you excitedly. "That is fun!" he says, chewing more excitedly.
"Try again!" you encourage.
Thor concentrates hard and begins to blow a bubble. Your eyes widen when the bubble continues to expand. You didn't know that EXTRA gum could get that large. The bubble continues to grow until it is almost the size of Thor's face.
"Um, okay, it might be a good time to suck it back in," you warn.
But you are too late.
The bubble pops with a sound like a firecracker. You jump back in surprise. The bubblegum has popped right over Thor's stubble, sticking the candy firmly to his face.
You can't help yourself, and you burst out laughing, much to Thor's chagrin. "I'm sorry!" you gasp, holding your sides. "But have you seen Miracle on 34th Street?"
"No," Thor says flatly.
"You should!" you say, bursting out laughing again. You can't help it. You never, ever thought, even in your wildest dreams, that you would be able to see Thor covered in bubble gum!
Right at that moment, Loki strides into the room. His eyebrow raises when he sees you laughing uncontrollably. You quickly quiet down when you see him, desperately trying not to look at Thor.
Loki's green eyes then flick to Thor, and he goes rigid. Then, Loki giggles. In the most un-Loki-like way possible, Loki giggles, pointing at Thor, which just makes you laugh even harder.
You wipe your eyes, grinning as you watch Loki laugh. "Hiddleston, you broke character!" you say.
Loki's eyes narrow quickly, and he suddenly unsheathes a knife from literally nowhere. "What?" he asks sharply.
"Aaaand it's back," you say.
