Chapter 41: Internships
"So much has happened and yet, it seems like it was just yesterday my parents opened Fenton University, Alex." Danny told his girlfriend.
"And they called the cops on Vicky when she didn't take rejection well." Alex commented.
"She didn't help her case when she said she just wanted to enter Fenton University to be closer to me now that my family became rich." Danny said. "Still, I'm amazed at what it took to stop her. Are you sure she doesn't have the spy gene?"
"Jerry made all tests back then, Danny." Alex answered. "Anyway, I think you should go to Middleton Space Center for your internship unless you'd rather fly there."
"I think I'll fly there, Alex." Danny replied. "I don't have as much to carry as I did when I moved to Malibu or when I moved back."
"I hope it's not to spend more time with me because I have my own internship at the local veterinarian clinic, Danny." Alex teasingly replied.
"In that case, I'm leaving now." Danny said and went ghost. "Bye." He gave her a goodbye kiss and flew away from Carmela's home.
Half an hour later, Alex was at the clinic helping her boss with a dog. "What's wrong with him?" She asked her boss.
"Dash Baxter's parents just brought Pooky here for a routine checkup, Alex." The veterinarian answered.
"I thought he moved out of town to attend college." Alex commented. "Why didn't he take his dog with him?"
"Pets aren't allowed at the place he moved into, Alex." The veterinarian explained. "By the way, how's Oinky?"
Meanwhile, Danny arrived at the Middleton Space Center. "Welcome aboard, Cadet Phantom." Dr. James Timothy Possible said.
"You may call me 'Cadet Fenton', Dr. Possible." Danny replied.
They then heard several flashes and noticed the reporters. Danny recognized a red-haired girl as Alex's friend Samantha. With Danny there, Dr. Possible and the other scientists gave a press conference. Danny pointed at Samantha and the reporter next to her spoke. "Lois Lane. Daily Planet. Danny Phantom, is it true you'll fly the first Proud Snack fueled rocket?"
"That's the idea." Danny answered.
"Some tests have yet to be taken before it's official, Ms. Lane." Dr. Possible added and then pointed at another reporter.
"Jessica Drew. Justice Magazine." The other reporter identified herself. "Do Danny Phantom's powers have anything to do with his presence here?"
"Ms. Drew, ghost powers or not, everyone needs astronaut training to fly a rocket." Dr. Possible gravely replied without actually answering the question and pointed at another reporter.
"Vicki Vale. Gotham Gazette." She identified herself. "Mr. Phantom, is it true that you were a junior astronaut even before becoming a half-ghost?"
"Yes, Ms. Vale." Danny answered.
After the press conference, the reporters started going back. Before leaving, Lois Lane went to the bathroom and phoned her husband. "Everything done, Clark."
"What about Sam Simpson?" Clark asked. "Has she done anything to show if she's still a spy or not?"
"Not yet but, would it really be a bad thing?" Lois asked.
"Only if she's trying to find out Superman's secrets and that's what worries me." Clark answered.
"What about Jon?" Lois asked her husband about their son. "Is he taking after you?"
"Not yet, Lois." Clark answered.
Meanwhile, back at the space center, Danny was operating the simulator to see if he was ready to fly an actual rocket when an alarm was heard and the simulation was cancelled. "What happened?" He asked.
"A ghost is trying to steal the rocket!" Dr. Possible answered.
"And I thought being here would make me less likely to face this kind of trouble than Tucker at Stark International." Velma commented.
Danny went ghost and quickly recognized the ghost. "Skulker?"
"Actually, it's Skulktech 3.3 now." Technus replied from inside Skulker's mecha.
"Technus and I made a deal, whelp." Skulker explained. "He gets the rock and I get you."
"You both will get neither and I'm surprised it was you instead of Technus who blabbed the plan." Danny commented.
Enraged, Skulker shot missiles at Danny, who blasted them all. "You won't be so lucky when I hit that rocket."
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Technus shouted and short-circuited the armor.
"You can rebuild the rocket later but the whelp is our priority." Skulker argued but it was too late to prevent Danny from blasting the armor's head off. Danny sucked both ghosts inside a Fenton Thermos.
"Good work, Danny." Dr. Possible commented.
"Thank you, Sir." Danny replied. "I'm surprised Kim didn't show up to help.
"She's already involved in a mission for Global Justice, Danny." Dr. Possible explained.
Meanwhile, Superman was observing from a safe distance. 'It seems I came here for nothing.' The Man of Steel thought. 'If not for Danny Phantom's connection to those spies, I'd support the idea of inviting him to join the Justice League.'
Afterwards, Danny finished all tests. "Congratulations, Cadet Fenton, you passed all tests and will go to space on the world's first Proud Snack fueled rocket." Dr. Possible said.
"Yeah!" Danny exclaimed.
Meanwhile, Clover was in Metroville working with Edna Mode. "Wrong!" Edna scolded her pupil. "All wrong! I know nobody can be as good at this as me but that's no excuse not to try! Redo these measurements!"
"Yes, Ma'am!" Clover eagerly replied.
Ten minutes later, Edna Mode evaluated Clover's new work. "That's better." Clover smiled until Edna added "Better but not good enough. Unfortunately, we have no time since…" They were interrupted by some people with animal-like features attacking them. "What happened?" Edna asked.
"Ask your spy assistant." Helga answered as she revealed herself.
"Boss, I don't know what she's talking about." Clover lied.
"I already know about that, dahling." Edna replied, shocking Clover.
"Well, in that case…" Clover said as she opened her compowder and pushed a button that materialized her catsuit. She also pushed a button that requested for help.
At Jerry's office, he heard an alarm and quickly activated the monitor. "Oh, no!" He exclaimed upon seeing Helga and her creatures attacking Clover and Edna. "I hope Alex and Sam are available." Jerry hurried to check it and, to his dismay, Samantha still was with Lois Lane. "No way I can pull her without Ms. Lane noticing it." He muttered and then checked for Alex's whereabouts. "Good. Her shift's just ended." He said and pushed a button, sucking her.
Seconds later, Alex crash-landed inside his office. "Jerry, what's wrong?" She asked.
"Helga broke into Edna Mode's atelier and is attacking her and Clover." Jerry quickly replied and showed the screen.
"Count on me, Jerry." She said with a serious face and then looked around. "Where's Sam?" She asked.
"Unfortunately, she's somewhere I cannot pull her from without compromising her status as a secret agent, Alex." Jerry gravely answered. "You'll have to go alone but don't worry. I'm calling the National Super Agency since they have Supers stationed in Metroville."
Eventually, Danny arrived back home and shared the good news with his family. "Congratulations, son." Jack commented. "Soon you'll be in outer space."
"But don't worry." Maddie reassured her son. "Thanks to our communications system."
"The FentonComm!" Jack proudly added.
"You'll be able to attend classes while in space so you won't miss anything." Maddie finished, oblivious to how Danny felt about the matter. "Aren't you glad?"
"Yes, Mom." He lied. 'And the fruitloop will be elected President of the United States.' He sarcastically thought.
"And that's not all!" Jack said. "If you don't return before Jazzy's marriage to Antonio, you'll be able to watch it from space."
"Uh, I hope I'm already back by then, Dad." Danny commented.
Wanting to change the subject, Jazz turned on the TV to watch the news and everyone saw the assault on Edna Mode's atelier. "One of Alex's friends is an intern there! I must save her!" Danny said and went ghost.
Since Metroville was 20 miles east from Amity Park, it didn't take long before he arrived. By then, the atelier was surrounded by cops and the Incredibles. "Danny Phantom?" One of the Supers asked.
"That's right, Incredash." Danny told the young Super. Since "Dash" already worked as a name that indicated speed and wasn't that unusual for a name, a superhero with superspeed can use a hero name with "Dash" on it without people suspecting there's someone named Dash underneath the mask. "What's the situation?"
"Invisigirl went inside to evaluate it." Mr. Incredible answered. "We won't know if it's safe until she returns."
"It's safe." Invisigirl replied as she made herself visible. "The villains are all contained. The W.O.O.H.P. agents did a good job containing them."
After the villains were taken away by the cops, Danny and the Incredibles stayed behind to talk to Edna Mode. "Clover, Alex, you may show up now." Edna said and the two spies showed up.
"Now can someone explain why Edna Mode already knew about me being a spy?" Clover asked.
"The National Super Agency gave me clearance, dahling." Edna explained. "The world might know me as Edna Mode, the world's most brilliant fashion expert, but I also make suits for the Supers. Part of the reason Jerry talked me into hiring Clover was to evaluate her as a potential successor."
"But this is classified information." Mr. Incredible added while looking at Danny, Clover and Alex.
"Understood, Sir." The three of them replied.
"But why would the Government hire a fashion mogul to make suits for superheroes?" Alex asked.
"That was my first line of business, dahling." Edna explained. "When the Super Ban passed, I had to find another way to use my talents to make a living. Making clothes for "stupid little stick figures with poofy lips" might bring more money but designing for gods has actual meaning."
"Do you design for Superman?" Clover eagerly asked.
"Spoken like I expected from a "stupid little stick figure with poofy lips", Clover." Edna replied and ignored Clover's frown. "And I will neither confirm nor deny the identity of assumed customers except for one thing: NO CAPES!"
"But it makes Superman look good." Clover moaned.
"A superhero's costume must be practical above all things." Edna said. "NO CAPES!"
"I know some superheroes died from cape snag but Superman and Supergirl are indestructible." Clover argued and then added. "Most of the time."
"They still can inspire not so indestructible heroes into wearing capes, dahling." Edna argued.
Afterwards, Danny, Clover and Alex visited Samantha and (with Jerry's permission) told her about Edna. "Let me get this straight." The redhead spy said. "The National Super Agency hired a fashion mogul to design superhero costumes?"
"Yeah, that was our reaction when we learned that." Alex commented. "How's your internship at the Daily Planet?"
"It's OK but I can't help but feel like Lois and Clark know more about me than they let on." Samantha commented. "I wonder if Superman spotted me and asked them to keep an eye."
"Paranoia much, Sammy?" Clover teasingly asked. "Remember. Jerry said it's a problem for spies who want to like careers outside spying. Me might tell you to either be a full time spy or leave spying altogether."
Samantha decided to ignore Clover. "Danny, is it true that you'll have classes while in space? It sounds fantastic!"
"Only you would think that." Clover commented.
"It'll be an interesting experience, Samantha." Danny answered. "The worst part is not being able to get a bathroom break since I'll be already wearing it."
Alex giggled but her friends were disgusted. "Danny, is it true the astronaut outfits beep when they use that function?" She asked.
"Don't encourage it, Alex." Clover told her friend.
End chapter.
Author's Note: "Incredash" is a nickname I came up with for Dash Parr. I'm sorry if someone else used it first. I don't know if someone did it by the time I wrote this chapter.
Author's Note 2: The astronaut outfit beeping is an allusion to The Fairly OddParents episode where Timmy's Dad briefly became an astronaut.
Answer to Guest: What Mandy did can be seen at the episode "Virtual Stranger". In this fic, she's expelled for it.
