*Author's Note: This chapter wasn't part of the original story but was by a reviewer's request. They wanted to know what would have happened had Luffy or one of the others actually found 'Law' in Ambience. I didn't write this scenario originally for a few reasons: 1) the story was already pretty long with the 'what-if' scenarios 2) it was getting to the point that the Monster Trio needed to learn the truth and details about the simulation 3) balancing the Monster Trio's POV chapters with the real world chapters was getting tricky 4) Law has a bit of a complicated history. Unlike the others, Luffy didn't save him right off the bat. So it was harder figuring out where Law would have been had Luffy not defeated the Warlords or not been at Saboady or Punk Hazard.
I eventually got a few ideas though and this chapter was born! It's essentially a redo/extension of Chapter 31: Luffy-Brook, but without the Brook sections.
Luffy
The search for Tra-guy was not an easy one, but Luffy really hadn't expected it to be. He knew Law had been a Warlord of the Sea before the two captains had formed their alliance to take down Doflamingo and Kaido, but what he might be in this world, Luffy wasn't sure. Law was in many ways a mystery to Luffy. The man was harsh and cold and kept his feelings to himself. But there were a few things Luffy could tell: Law carried a lot of pain and despite his rough exterior, Luffy knew the other captain had a good heart. Luffy considered him a friend.
"Captain!" Loudspeaker stood in front of where Luffy sat in the mess hall and saluted. "There are currently no records of Trafalgar Law being a member of the Seven Warlords. Until Jinbei quit and you defeated Crocodile, Captain, the Warlords have mostly remained constant the past few years. There are currently several candidates vying for the positions, however. It's possible the captain of the Heart Pirates is one of them."
"Okay. Do you mind checking?"
"Captain…do you intend to capture this pirate? Or perhaps recommend him for the position?" Loudspeaker asked, finally lowering his salute. Luffy grinned.
"We'll see when I meet him," Luffy explained.
"I see," Loudspeaker replied, though it was obvious even to Luffy that he really didn't. That was fine. "Well, then Captain, I'll leave you to your…" Loudspeaker looked at the pile of food surrounding Luffy, "…snack." With a final salute, the Marine Lieutenant Commander left. Luffy grinned happily. He had the entire mess hall to himself! The crew wouldn't be coming in for another couple of hours for lunch. The perfect time to have a snack and no one to stop him from going to the kitchen to get more!
Picking up his cutlery, the rubber captain began to dig in.
"Captain, I'm afraid Trafalgar Law is not currently a candidate for one of the open Warlord positions." Loudspeaker reported to Luffy, who had just finished his mountain of food. The rubber captain belched loudly and then rubbed his chin in thought. Where had they seen Tra-guy when after they'd entered the New World…?
"Ah ha!" Luffy suddenly exclaimed, slamming a fist into the palm of his hand. Loudspeaker jumped back in surprise.
"C-captain…?" he stammered.
"Take us to Punk Hazard!" Luffy declared.
"Punk Ha…? Captain! We can't go there! It's dangerous! It's off-limits, even to Marines!" Loudspeaker protested.
"I don't care. Take us anyway."
"So blunt…" With that utterance, Loudspeaker left the mess hall to ask the navigator the best method of getting to Punk Hazard. Surely such a place would lack an Eternal Pose…
"The Eternal Pose to Punk Hazard, Captain," Loudspeaker said, clearly in a state of quiet shock. He waved his hand at the navigator standing next to him. The Eternal Pose in question sat in the navigator's hands.
"Yes!" Luffy cheered from his captain's chair on the bridge. "Onward to Punk Hazard!"
"Of course, Captain," the navigator said, giving Loudspeaker a shrug before walking over and giving orders to the helmsman. Loudspeaker stared at his superior officer.
"Captain Luffy, may I ask why we are going to such a dangerous location?"
"To find Tra-guy, of course!"
"You think Trafalgar Law is at Punk Hazard?"
"Yep!"
"Why do you think this, Captain?"
"Cuz that's where Tra-guy was before!" Luffy provided, like that explained everything.
"Before? I'm afraid I don't follow."
"Just follow that guy," Luffy stated, pointing to the navigator. Loudspeaker sighed, giving up.
"Whatever you say, Captain," the Lieutenant Commander said, lowering his head in surrender. Luffy grinned and gave the man a pat on the shoulder.
"Why don't you get a snack, Loudspeaker? That always makes me feel better." The rubber captain suggested with his usual sunny grin.
"That—thank you, Captain, but that won't be necessary."
"If you say so," Luffy replied with a yawn and a stretch. "You know where we're going right, Loudspeaker?"
"Of course, Captain."
"Okay then. LOUDSPEAKER IS IN CHARGE!" Luffy shouted to the entire bridge. Then, with a wave and a grin, he continued, "I'm going to take a nap."
With that, the rubber man turned and left the bridge, leaving his entire on-duty bridge crew flabbergasted behind him.
Luffy woke to a knock at his door. Yawning, he fetched his straw hat from the hook where he'd left it and got up. He was still in the same clothes he'd been wearing before he'd gone to sleep. Shrugging to himself, he answered the door. As expected, Loudspeaker stood there with two marines on either side of him.
"Captain! Good morning! I wish to report that we are within sight of Punk Hazard and will be pulling in shortly." Loudspeaker reported. Something itched in Luffy's mind at that, some thought that he couldn't quite pin down. When he couldn't place it, he let the thought go. If it was important, he'd realize it later and figure it out then.
"Which side of the island are we pulling into?" Luffy asked instead.
"Er…actually, Captain, I wanted to check with you about that. Seeing as how you've been here before, which side would be…?"
"Oh, Tra-guy was on the ice side last time. So we should go there," Luffy answered, ignoring the look of confusion on Loudspeaker's face. Then he continued with a laugh, "Besides, this boat would probably go up in flames if we tried to cross the fire side."
"Eh, as you say, Captain," Loudspeaker replied.
"Oh yeah! Do you know why the island is half fire and half ice, Loudspeaker?" the rubber man asked. The Lieutenant Commander nodded.
"Aye, sir. After Admiral Sengoku retired, admirals Aokiji and Akainu battled for several days to take his spot. Punk Hazard was the island they chose for their battle."
"Hm." Luffy got an uncharacteristically serious expression on his face. "Who won?"
"Uh…Aokiji, sir. That's why he's the head of the Navy. You know, the top admiral? Your grandfather's boss?" Loudspeaker was looking at Luffy like his captain had grown a second head. "I know Vice Admiral Garp was pleased when Aokiji won the position."
"Eh, I never pay attention to that stuff," Luffy replied, waving it off.
"He says it so casually!" the marines on either side of Loudspeaker protested. The Lieutenant Commander seemed to remember they were there and looked at each of them sharply.
"Well, gentlemen, it appears I won't need your help with the captain this morning after all. You may return to your regular duties." He said, dismissing the two men.
As soon as the two men left, Luffy yawned. "Well, I'm going back to sleep. Wake me up when we're at the island." And quickly shut the door. He could hear Loudspeaker's protests on the other side.
About an hour later, the ship arrived near Vegapunk's old lab on the frozen side of Punk Hazard. It was just how Luffy remembered it, with one crucial difference.
"Okay, we're here. Can you untie me now?" the captain whined from his chair, where he'd been trussed up since Loudspeaker retrieved the two men, broke into Luffy's room, and forced their irresponsible captain to the bridge.
"Indeed, captain. We are here. As ordered." Loudspeaker agreed. And with that, the two men from earlier untied Luffy. The rubber man growled, but there wasn't much he could do about it since Ace apparently had left standing orders that if Luffy slept in too much, the crew was to use any means necessary to wake the captain up and make him do his job. His missed his actual ship and crew more and more.
"Alright, alright!" Luffy protested, straightening his shirt. "Let's go ashore!"
The crew disembarked quickly and efficiently. Luffy wanted to stretch and run ahead, but Loudspeaker and the other bridge officers were apparently prepared for their captain's usual antics and quickly grabbed him before he could take off.
"Captain! Please! This island is dangerous. Who knows what ruffians might be scurrying about? Not to mention the toxic gas incident which caused this island to be cordoned off in the first place? Think of the men, Captain! They look to you as an example…" Loudspeaker started droning on and on. It reminded him a bit of Zoro, if Zoro's lectures were long-winded and boring rather than stern and to the point. Luffy's brain soon shut out the Lieutenant Commander's words as they continued their walk up to the main door of the lab.
"How are we gonna get inside?" One of the men asked.
"Surely we're going to sneak in and take them by surprise…"
"I'm sure the captain will have some plan up his sleeve…"
"HEY, TRA-GUY! YOU IN THERE?!" Luffy shouted, banging on the large metal door with his fist.
"That wasn't quiet at all!" his crew screamed.
Then, to everyone but Luffy's surprise, the door cracked open.
"So, tell me, what brings you to my vacation ho-?" the captain of the Heart Pirates began before he was quickly interrupted by the small Marine standing before him.
"Tra-guy!" Luffy cried out with a laugh, jumping up and wrapping the other pirate captain in a hug. The normally intimidating Trafalgar Law stood there dumbly, his face a look of complete shock, as he looked over at the other Marines standing behind Luffy, as though one of them could explain what their crazy captain was doing. The Marines, in turn, stood there with their mouths hanging open, unsure themselves what was going on.
"What the absolute hell are you doing?!" Law finally screamed, trying to pull Luffy off him. The rubber man unfortunately proved tenacious and hard to remove. "Let go or I swear I'll rearrange your fucking-! Wait. You ate the Gum Gum Fruit."
Luffy nodded. "Yep. That's right."
Trafalgar Law frowned at the Marine captain, then grabbed his head and twisted it around. "A straw hat…You're Fire Fist-ya's little brother!"
"Yep! Ace is my big brother!" Luffy helpfully confirmed, his head still twisted around.
Law's frown deepened as he let go of Luffy's head and watched it snap back into place. "Does Fire Fist-ya know that you're here, Straw Hat-ya?"
Luffy looked away from Law's penetrating gaze, suspiciously pushing his index fingers together and pursing his lips. The motion made his words come out with a strange lisp, "Yews. Ob couwse he does."
"He's lying!" his crew unhelpfully provided.
"So obviously!"
"Captain's such a bad liar!"
Law continued to look at Luffy for a few moments more and then glanced past him to the rest of the waiting Marines. "I will discuss this with your captain alone and no one else!"
With that the captain of the Heart Pirates roughly grabbed Luffy and pulled him inside then quickly shut the door behind him. The door slammed with a huge thud that echoed across the dark chamber Luffy found himself in. Outside he could hear the muffled cries of his subordinates as they protested the sudden kidnapping of their captain.
"Let's go, Straw Hat-ya," Law stated, pointing further down the darkened chamber with his sword. "You have some explaining to do."
Straw Hat Luffy, as this world's Trafalgar Law was quick to learn, was not good at explaining things. What he was good at, Law discovered, was asking a millions questions, being an absolute idiot, and finding new and inventive ways to increase Law's blood pressure.
"Straw Hat-ya! For the last time, what are you doing here?!"
"I already told you. I was looking for you."
"Why? Do you have a message from Fire Fist?"
"No. Why? Do you know Ace?"
Law took a deep breath. His expression looked very similar to the expression Luffy usually saw on the other pirate's face before he was going to explode at the rubber man for something.
"If Fire Fist-ya didn't send you, I shouldn't be telling you anything. You'll ruin the entire operation, Straw Hat-ya." Law finally said.
"Operation? You mean your plan to take down Mingo-?" Luffy was interrupted by Law's hand slamming over his mouth.
"Are you crazy?!" Law whispered harshly, glancing around as though he expected ears to start appearing from the walls. "You can't say that shit out loud!"
"Whad shid?" Luffy asked, his voice still muffled. Law glanced around once more before removing his hand.
"Look, Straw hat-ya. I don't know how you know so much about this operation, especially if Fire Fist-ya didn't mention anything to you. But the only people who should are members of S.W.O.R.D., got it?" Law said quietly. "If Caesar gets a hint of it, it'll ruin the entire plan."
"S.W.O.R.D.?" Luffy asked. Law paused, considering for a moment, before continuing.
"Yes. A secret organization within the Navy. Sengoku started it up. Aokiji continued it. Your brothers are both members. Fire Fist is the one who talked me into joining it, actually." Law explained. "And now you seem to have somehow stumbled into it."
"Wait. You're a Marine, Tra-guy?" Luffy asked. Law's eye twitched.
"Of course not. I would never join up with the World Government. It just so happens that S.W.O.R.D.'s and mine's goals currently align at the moment. Once this operation is over, I'm finished."
"You mean getting revenge on Mingo, right, Tra-guy?"
Law ignored the question. "What's with the overly-friendly nickname, Straw Hat-ya? We've never met before. Why were you looking for me?"
"So, you don't remember, Law?" Luffy asked. Though he knew he already had his answer. This wasn't the Law from his world.
"Remember what?"
"We're allies. Friends."
"Pft. Haven't you been listening? I've never met you before today-"
"Your full name is Trafalgar D. Water Law."
Luffy had never seen Law look so surprised. The normally calm and nonchalant Surgeon of Death was pale and his normally steady hands were shaking.
"How do you know that?" Law asked, his voice a rough whisper.
"You told it to me. We met, but in another world."
"Another world…? That's crazy! You're not making any sense!"
"It's the truth!" Luffy shouted back. "You…me…Ace…we were all pirates! Ace was killed by Akainu! He nearly killed me too! You saved me, Law! You…!"
"Shut up!" Law cut Luffy off. "Fire Fist? A pirate?! He hates pirates! You know that. And you know why!"
"Yeah, yeah. So his dad was Gold Roger? Who cares?" Luffy countered.
"The World Government! That's who!" Law let out his breath in an explosive huff. "I've heard enough. You need to get out of here before you blow my cover."
"Law…you didn't answer my question," Luffy dogged on. "Are you still trying to get revenge on Doflamingo?"
Law gave Luffy a cold, harsh stare. "It's none of your concern."
"Law, let me help you. In the other world, we defeated Mingo together. You won't have a chance by-"
"Get out!" Law stood, pointing towards the door.
"Law! Please, I can help you! Just-!"
"Out, Straw hat-ya!" Law glared at Luffy from under the brim of his hat. "Or I'll tell Garp that you were here."
"Grandpa!" Luffy felt the blood leave his face. Law nodded.
"That's right. And when Fire Fist gets word that you were here…"
Luffy gulped.
Law turned and began walking towards the door. "I'll at least escort you out. I can extend you that courtesy."
"Tra-guy…" Something in Luffy's voice must have sounded so pathetic, Law actually stopped and turned around. Luffy forced himself to continue, despite the tears threatening to clog his throat at his helplessness at being unable to help another friend. "If you go against Mingo alone…don't do it. He'll kill you. A-at least ask Ace or Sabo for help. Please."
Law sighed. "He talks about you a lot, you know."
"Who?"
"Fire Fist-ya. You're always his 'troublesome little brother.' But…" Law got an unusually fond smile on his face, "…he always goes on about how reliable you are too."
"Ace…" Luffy could feel the tears gathering in his eyes.
"Tell you what, Straw Hat-ya. I'll take what you said under advisement. But in return…" Law's harsh stare returned, "…you never mention my real name ever again. Not even to Fire Fist-ya. You got that?"
Luffy nodded. Law turned around and led him out of the lab back into the frozen wasteland of Punk Hazard.
Following another lengthy nap, Luffy found himself back in his ship's galley, a large assortment of food spread out on the table before him. Loudspeaker was consulting him about something.
"We're back in the East Blue, Captain," Loudspeaker reported. Once again some thought nagged in the back of Luffy's mind, but once again the rubber man couldn't quite place it. Something wasn't quite right. Once again, Luffy decided to turn back to his snack as soon as possible.
"Thanks for getting us back so fast, Loudspeaker," Luffy said proudly. The Lieutenant Commander didn't even bother to correct his name.
"Well, Captain, I'll leave you to your…snack," Loudspeaker said, staring at the assortment of food before saluting and walking out of the mess hall. Luffy grinned, picking up his cutlery and digging in. He'd been eating for only a few minutes before he noticed a familiar green specter floating above him.
"Luffy-san!" the spirit cried in joy.
"Oh! Hi, Brook!" Luffy replied happily, taking another bite. Suddenly, the captain's eyes widened and practically bulged out of his face as he nearly choked on his food. "BROOK?!"
Continue 'Ambience Chapter 31 Luffy-Brook' from here. Understandably, Luffy's thoughts about not worrying about finding Law wouldn't occur, since in this alternate, he did find Law.
Author's notes: The background characters commenting on what the main characters are doing (usually in shock or surprise) has always been one of my favorite One Piece gags. I've used the hell out of it with Luffy's Marine crew in this chapter.
-Law got an unusually happy story out of this. I figured the Marines are a slightly better organization if Sabo, Ace, and Luffy are part of it (or maybe it's better because they're part of it?) Either way, I figured no Marineford means that Akainu has slightly less political clout in the Marines, S.W.O.R.D. becomes a bigger and better organization than in the real world, and Ace is helping run it.
-There's a fan theory that Law may be a part of S.W.O.R.D. Personally, I doubt it, since Law hates the World Government so much, and Sengoku and he seemed like they first met at Dressrosa. However, I figured I'd play with the idea in this chapter. Maybe a S.W.O.R.D. organization run by Ace is able to talk Law into using it as a way for revenge against Doflamingo since becoming a Warlord is out of the question.
-By the way, the thing that was nagging Luffy's mind? The fact that they ended up in Punk Hazard after Luffy slept for just one night. And then ended up back in East Blue after a nap. Both trips should take days and require some kind of trip over or under the Red Line. Luffy's starting to notice way time passes within the dream world, even if subconsciously. He'll figure it out for good after he talks to Brook.
