Dean paced in front of the kitchen window. He was torn in different directions and doubting himself. He could have been more discrete with finding out what was up, but if Kate had flown under the radar, and summoned a demon... he didn't want to think about that. He was frustrated with her but she had pissed off John Winchester himself. Brian looked equally as pissed but he didn't have experience with him. He saw them walk around the side of the house and assumed they were going somewhere to cool off. The truck engine's rumble confirmed his thoughts. With John and Brian gone, Dean could breathe.
Kate watched Dean pace. She hadn't meant for all of this to happen. She wanted to be angry at him for exposing her but she knew, deep down, that he was right. "Dean."
"Don't" He said, turning his back to her.
"Dean, please." She whimpered.
Dean spun around and put his hands on the table, leveling her with a look that cut through her heart.
She wanted to fix everything. She wanted him to not be mad at her. She could deal with her dad or Bobby being mad at her but Dean was her friend. He was like a brother. "Please let me explain."
Dean didn't respond to her, he just kept glaring at her.
She reached across the table to grab his hand and shrieked when she realized he was frozen.
Sam ran down the stairs when he heard her scream.
She ran and hugged Sam. "I don't know what happened. Dean is frozen."
Sam walked over and snapped his fingers in front of Dean's face. It was as if time stood still. "What happened before he got like this?"
Kate sniffled. "I wanted to explain and he looked at me like that and froze. Did I do this?"
Sam called Bobby's name but didn't get an answer. He left the kitchen and found Bobby in the basement. "Kate, get in here."
Kate ran down the stairs and felt her heart drop when she saw that he was also frozen.
Sam saw the panic on Kate's face and pushed his own panic down. "Kate, breathe. I think this is a vision."
Kate dove into his arms and cried. "I'm scared."
He wrapped her in a tight hug and let her cry. If it was a vision, he had to figure out how to snap her out of it. "You have to wake up."
Kate closed her eyes and willed herself to wake up. She opened them and the world around them was still frozen.
Sam walked out the front door as storm clouds gathered over head. The rain pelting his skin let him know that it was only Dean and Bobby that had frozen in time. Nature was still moving in full force.
Kate ran to Sam and grabbed his hand. Thunder boomed over their heads, shaking the ground. They turned to go back inside but the house was no longer there.
Sam's panic was starting to bubble over. He squeezed Kate's hand tighter. "Do not let go of my hand, no matter what happens." He wracked his brain, trying to remember anything that would be useful. He had researched psychics and psychic abilities. "The only way out is through."
"What does that mean?" Kate wailed.
The world around them had started to fade away, except for a path that led into the woods. Sam checked his side to makes sure his knife was there. He set his mind and started walking toward the woods.
Kate pulled back. "No! I don't want to go in there."
"I think we have to, kiddo. I'm here. You aren't alone and I have protection." He said, holding his knife up for her to see.
She dropped her hand to her own belt loop and sighed in relief when she felt that her knife was there as well.
They walked into the woods and watched as the path disappeared behind them.
Sam had an uneasy feeling but had to stay calm for Kate.
They walked farther into the woods until they came to an embankment below a black top road. Sam helped Kate up onto the road and they continued to walk. "If this is in your head, can you control it?"
Kate focused on changing the surroundings. Nothing moved. "I don't think so. Sam, I'm scared."
They talked as they walked. If Sam could get her to let her guard down, he might be able to wake her up. "Maybe this is because you are scared of dealing with your dad?"
She was scared of what her dad would do but not in the same way that she was scared of the woods. Kate gave Sam a wry smile. "I'm more scared of yours."
Sam grimaced. "He has that effect." He was hopeful that his dad would just let Brian handle everything.
"Sam, look." Kate said, pointing to an open grassy area. It was the first change in scenery since they left the woods.
In the middle of the grassy field was a swing set. "This is the park." Sam said.
Kate looked around. She turned around slowly and saw the yellow house standing alone to the side of the park.
Sam groaned. He didn't like where the vision was heading.
"We have to check it out." Kate said, walking toward the house.
Sam knew it wasn't a good idea but could see no other option. "Now would be a fantastic time to wake up."
Kate ignored him and let go of his hand.
"Kate, stop." He said, reaching for her hand.
She rang the door bell.
Sam grabbed her hand and pulled her back. "Do not let go of my hand."
The door opened slowly.
"The only way out is through, right?" Kate said.
Sam swore under his breath and followed Kate through the door.
The house was simple but the owner had a way with plants. Vines from various plants covered the walls and flat places.
"We need to go." Sam said, tugging on Kate's hand.
Kate pulled her hand away and walked deeper into the house. "No, this is important."
Sam just knew that things were about to turn south.
Kate motioned for him to stand beside her and silently pointed to a person sitting on a couch. Sam shook his head and put a finger to his mouth. He grabbed her arm so that she couldn't let go.
Kate pulled Sam toward the end of the hallway. She tripped over a rug and Sam caught her. "Devil's trap." Sam whispered.
She pulled the edge of the rug back. It was indeed a trap.
"We need to go, now." Sam said.
Kate didn't want to go. She felt the bracelet on her ankle warming her skin. She had to act quickly. She pulled against Sam's hand and stumbled into a room.
Sam tried to grab her but the door was slammed in his face. He tried to open it but the door was sealed. "Shit, shit, shit." He banged on the door frantically.
Kate could hear him banging on the door. She tried to open it from her side but it wouldn't budge. Movement behind her caused her to turn around. She saw a woman sitting in a chair on the other side of the room.
The woman stood up and walked over to Kate. "You shouldn't be here." She said, putting a hand over Kate's eyes. Images flashed in Kate's mind and then the banging stopped.
"Kate! Are you listening to me?" A loud voice rang through her ears.
Kate opened her eyes again to see Dean in the same place she had left him. "What?" She was trying to get her bearings.
"Did you just tune all of that out?" Dean said, walking around the table.
"I.. no. Dean I'm sorry." She stammered.
Sam sprinted down the stairs, nearly falling on the way down. He slid into the kitchen and wrapped Kate in a smothering hug.
"You were there?" Kate asked Sam.
He kept her in his arms and nodded his head. "Yeah, you scared me to death."
Dean sat on the table and cleared his throat. "Care to share with the class?"
Sam told Dean what had happened in the vision. He described everything in as much detail as he could remember. "You jerked your arm away and you were on the other side of that door and I thought I had lost you for good." He said, looking at Kate.
Kate stiffened. "I'm sorry."
"Oh, so you don't even listen to Sam, now?" Dean said.
"The door shut and there was this woman. She put her hand over my eyes and said I shouldn't have been there." Kate was still processing what was vision and what was real life.
"Damn straight, you shouldn't have been there!" Dean said sternly.
Kate looked at his face and wanted to shrink. "I didn't go on purpose. Ask Sam, I was just as confused about it as he was."
Sam confirmed that she had no control over it and couldn't wake up unless they followed the road. "What happened when she covered your eyes?"
Kate went blank. She had seen images but it was as though she was looking through stained glass. She let her knees give out and sobbed. She explained what happened and prayed they would believe her when she said she didn't know what the images were.
Dean picked her up and let her wrap her arms around his neck. "Deep breaths. I don't think you would lie about it at this point." He had to figure out what he was going to tell Brian. He had no idea how to deal with psychics, let alone a psychic with the maturity of a nine year old. "You said someone was sitting on the couch. Did you get a look at them?"
"Why? It was just a man. I could tell that much but the room wasn't well lit and I couldn't really make out anything else." Sam answered.
Dean thought for a moment. "Visions happen for a reason. Any detail could be important."
Kate swallowed a sob. "The lady didn't act like she wanted to hurt me. She acted concerned."
Dean wasn't sure if that made him feel better or worse.
"Where is Bobby?" Kate asked, feeling the panic resurface.
Sam opened the basement door and ran down the steps. He was relieved to see Bobby working on something.
Bobby looked up when Sam entered the room. "What's the matter, Sam?" He asked.
Sam told Bobby everything that had happened from the time they got back from the hunt to the moment before Sam found him.
Bobby grumbled. "I leave you all alone for five minutes and the damn world falls apart."
Sam ran back up the stairs and waited for Bobby to reach the top.
Kate saw him and hugged him. Seeing him frozen was terrifying but knowing he was unharmed and moving helped her to calm down.
"Where is your dad?" Bobby asked.
Dean cleared his throat. "They left to , uh, cool off."
Bobby looked at his watch and scratched his head. He was caught up, thanks to Sam's report but he couldn't quite make sense of any of it. "I better make a phone call."
Kate renewed her tears. Everything she did just made things worse.
Dean let her sit on his lap and cry on his shoulder. He was frustrated with her but wasn't going to let her spiral. He would have to run interference when John and Brian returned. He looked over at Sam and groaned inwardly. He would have to run interference for Sam too. He didn't think Sam was at fault but John saw things in a much more black and white manner. Vampires were simple. None of this was simple.
##########
John rested an arm on the bar and drummed his fingers on his knee. He wanted to join Brian in his drink but figured Brian needed it more than he did.
"She is going to get herself killed, the first chance she gets." Brian said ruefully.
John couldn't say that the kid didn't have a death wish. "She does have a lot going on."
Brian sat his glass down. "Taking up for her?"
"God, no. I just mean that I don't think she meant to cause trouble." John said.
Brian knew that Kate hadn't maliciously set out to get herself in trouble. It was her misguided sense of justice and lack of care for her own safety that scared him. "No, I think she was trying to help. She just doesn't listen. She has to accept that the deal can't be broken. I just don't know how to get through her head."
John chuckled. "I have an idea or two."
Brian ordered another beer. Kate was bull headed. She would keep pushing if she thought she had a chance of fixing his fate. "Once I am gone, I am afraid she will get herself hurt."
"She wont." John said confidently.
"How could you possibly know that?"
"I have kept my two alive this long. I will make sure she stays alive as well."
Brian took a long sip from his glass. "She worries me more than the damn hellhounds." He winced when he took a deep breath.
"Ribs?" John asked.
"No, the cut." Brian said, lifting the edge of his shirt.
John cringed. "That looks infected. Bobby has some antibiotics you can take and we will clean that out once we get back."
Brian finished his beer. "How am I supposed to deal with her? This is so much worse than just not following orders. She has those abilities. She is worried for me and not thinking straight."
Dean was always simple. Sam was John's complicated child. Sam was also the child who had given him the most gray hairs. He paid the tab and headed back out to his truck.
Brian followed slowly.
John's phone rang and he answered it. Bobby told him what happened after they left. John told him they would be home soon and would figure it out. He looked over at Brian and noted that he didn't look good. He wasn't sure if it was the pain in his gut or the weight of dealing with Kate that had him a few shades lighter than usual. It was one more thing to complicate the evening.
"What did Bobby have to say?" Brian asked.
John relayed the message and turned on the truck. The drive back to Bobby's was silent.
Bobby heard the truck and opened the door. Both John and Brian looked like they had a chance to cool off.
"He needs some antibiotics and clean bandages." John said as they got to the porch.
Bobby also noted Brian's pale color. "Good thing I have both of those." He turned and went to the medicine cabinet.
Kate started shaking when she heard the door open again.
"Your dad needs his stomach looked at." Bobby said, holding up the pill bottle and first aid kit.
Kate scrambled off Dean's lap and ran into the living room. "Dad?"
Brian put his hand on her head and smiled. "I'm fine, bug." He sat down on the couch and leaned back so Bobby could tend to the laceration.
Bobby cleaned the wound and handed John the pills to give to Brian. The laceration was deep and swollen. John had done a good job of mending it but it looked painful.
Kate saw the cut and the way he winced when Bobby touched it. She grabbed his hand. "That doesn't look okay."
"It should heal up just fine as long as the antibiotics work and he doesn't bust it open again." Bobby said.
Kate felt guilt constricting her lungs. He was in pain and stressed and she kept messing up. "I'm so sorry, daddy." She squeaked.
Brian lifted his head and looked at her. "This." He said, pointing to his stomach "Is not your fault."
"I'm sorry for everything. You are stressed and I am stressing you worse and I make everything worse. I am an awful person and I am just sorry." She said through tears.
He squeezed her hand. "Kate, we will talk about that. You are not an awful person. You are a kid who made some bad choices."
That was an understatement, Kate thought.
John sat down and called Sam and Dean into the room.
Brian sat up slowly and moved to a chair.
Dean sat down on the couch and Kate sat down next to him. He placed his arm in front of her and rested his hand on the other side of her leg.
John knew from Dean's body language that he intended to run interference.
Sam sat on the other side of her and put his elbows on his knees.
John pinched the bridge of his nose. He didn't want his boys making things harder than they already were.
Brian shifted in the chair and looked at Kate. "Start from the beginning."
Kate pushed herself back into the couch. The day had been one big nightmare. "From this morning?"
"Since I already know what happened before, start with when they got back from the nest." Brian said.
She told him about what happened when she was washing Sam's hair. She told them about John's scar and her thinking she could read him. "I didn't mean to find the demon stuff." She said, avoiding John's gaze.
"But you meant to read John?" Brian clarified.
She nodded her head but didn't look at him.
"Katelyn look at me." Brian said.
She forced herself to meet his eyes.
"So, your intention was to read him?"
She dropped her eyes. "I didn't know if I could."
"But you meant to try?" Brian said a bit more firmly.
"Yes, sir."
"That is one." Brian said.
The conversation progressed and so did her list of infractions. She felt sick to her stomach.
They got to the vision of the house.
"Wait. Samuel, you let her go in that house?" John said, sitting forward in his chair.
Sam blanched. "We couldn't find a way to get out of the vision. We tried."
Kate curled into a ball and hid her face. She had let go of Sam and caused them to be separated.
"We got split up and a door got slammed between us." Sam confessed.
"How?" John asked firmly.
Sam looked at Dean and then said. "I don't know. One second she was beside me and the next, she was on the other side of the door."
Dean kept his features neutral. Not telling John about Kate letting go of his hand was a gamble but Dean would have done the same for Sam.
"She saw a woman in the room and the woman touched her eyes and said she shouldn't be there." Dean said, for Kate.
"She touched your eyes?" Brian asked.
"I saw some flashes and then came to at the table. I don't know what the flashes were. I swear." She said quietly.
"You said you didn't now what Sam saw either but that was a lie." Brian said, raising his voice slightly.
Dean shifted himself ever so slightly in front of Kate. "She is telling the truth. I saw her when she snapped out of it. She said the images were blurry and she didn't know what they meant."
John shot him a glare.
"Is there anything else I need to know?" Brian asked, soaking in all of the new information.
Kate shook her head. They had summarized it all quite well.
The room was achingly quiet for a long time.
Brian finally cleared his throat. "Kate, you need to go upstairs and get ready for bed."
She started sniffling again but couldn't force her body to move.
"I can go with her. If she panics she could have another vision." Sam offered.
Brian took the offer and let Sam lead Kate out of the room.
Once they were upstairs, John bore his eyes into the side of Dean's face. "You wouldn't happen to know how they got separated, would you?"
"No sir." Dean answered.
John knew they were covering for each other but let it go. Dean was backing Sam up. The small detail would not mean much in the face of the mountain of infractions Kate had wracked up. They had wordlessly agreed to cover what ever it was. He trusted Dean to be forthcoming if the detail stood a chance of changing things. He wanted his boys to be a team and have each others' backs. "Alright, Dean."
Dean fought the urge to relax his shoulders. He knew that John had probably seen right through him but he wasn't going to throw Kate and Sam under a bus. He kept his mouth shut as Brian and John talked. He butted in twice to clarify things from his point of view. They couldn't expect her to make rational decisions when they had no experience with visions themselves.
John dismissed him from the room.
Dean left reluctantly but made a bee line for Kate and Sam. He was slightly worried about Sam's hide as well. Sam had done the best he could, aside from dodging the questions about the summoning vision. Dean's anger and frustration had melted away and he was just worried.
Bobby opened the door to their room and sat a stack of pillows and blankets on Dean's bed.
"What is going on?" Dean asked.
Bobby grimaced. "John is going to take the couch tonight. You three can sleep up here."
Dean wasn't sure what that meant for Kate.
Sam patted Kate's back through the blanket she had wrapped herself in. "I can tell them most of it was my fault. You are still a kid and I should have stopped you."
"Sam." Dean interjected. He had done that for Sam more than once and got why Sam wanted to. "I don't think that is going to help this time."
Kate sat up and hugged Sam. "It wasn't your fault though."
Sam was ready to sacrifice himself in order to get some of the attention off of her.
Dean stopped him before he walked out the door. "Sam, I get it. I wish I could throw myself in the way too. It isn't going to work this time. You will just piss dad off and make it worse."
Sam sat back down and hung his head.
Brian cracked the door and knocked on the door facing.
Kate held her breath and hid behind Sam.
Brian sat down on the edge of the bed. "I'm not dealing with you tonight. I think I need more time to think about all of this and I want you to get some sleep."
Kate relaxed and wrapped her arms around his neck. "I am sorry."
"We will talk about it tomorrow. I love you. Go to bed." He said. He hugged her back and held his stomach as he stood up. He was in too much pain to do much of anything.
Kate started crying again when he left. "He hates me."
"He doesn't hate you. He needs more time to chill out and you saw that cut. He just needs some rest." Dean said. He threw the extra blankets on the floor and motioned to her to lay down.
Sam sat back on his bed and opened a book of Greek mythology.
Kate rested her head on her pillow and listened to the soothing rhythm of his voice. She listened to the story Icarus. She knew that there was a lesson somewhere in the story but flying into the sun sounded like a good idea to her. She started thinking about what type of wings she would have if she could fly.
Sam stopped reading and shut the book after she fell asleep. He pulled her blanket over her and put Millie in front of her face. He carefully got off of his bed and sat down on Dean's.
Dean read the look on Sam's face and snickered.
"What?" Sam whispered.
"When you did something and got yourself in really deep shit, I would fret over how I was going to get you out of it. You'd fall asleep and I'd stare at you and plan how I was going to get between you and dad." Dean said lightly.
Sam raised a brow. "I didn't know that."
"It didn't always work but I have talked him out of using his belt a time or two." Dean bit his tongue, knowing that he had made John mad at him at times so he would forget about Sam. "Listen, Sam. You can't this time."
Sam sighed. "She is a kid."
"I know. Just think about how badly she could get hurt, or worse. She needs to know that some things are off limits." He put his hand on Sam's back.
"This sucks." Sam said.
Dean nodded his head. "Yes it does. If it comes down to it and someone needs to step in the way, I will do it."
Sam scoffed.
"I have years of experience and know how to deal with dads. You don't want to piss dad off." Dean said. He wanted Sam to stay out of the line of fire.
Sam shifted his feet to the floor when Dean nudged him. "Dean?"
"Yeah?" Dean mumbled as he walked toward the door.
"Thanks."
Dean looked at the back of Sam's head as he got back into his own be. "No problem." It really was no problem. He wouldn't think twice about throwing himself in front of a moving train for his brother. He looked at the lump of blankets on the floor and closed his eyes. 'and I'm off to talk down a damn freight train.' He thought.
The stairs creaked and John looked into the hallway. He knew who was coming down the stairs without asking. He knew Dean would find him to smooth him over.
Dean stepped into the hall and locked eyes with the freight train himself. 'Well, here goes nothing.'
