Jane glanced at her reflection in the mirror with a smirk. Maura had already left for work and she was due to be at the airport in an hour. Easy task if the traffic wasn't too dense, which it usually wasn't at this time of day.

What had her made a face was the fact that her birthday was coming up in a few days and that she assumed to receive a surprise party like every year. If there was something she hated, it was if someone made a fuss about her. Especially her birthday.

Members of the extended Rizzoli family would be invited and turn the already unnerving event into a much more annoying one by bothering her with questions about marriage and kids. Now of course, they all knew about Jane's relationship with Maura. It would raise some eyebrows among the catholic siblings, and she was scared that one of them would send her to some sort of exorcism while others would push her towards marriage. Even more so now, after she had a girlfriend.

She abruptly turned on her heals as if to shake the dark thoughts and shed them in the place she had been standing to walk off to grab the car keys and her luggage. A gentle smile spread over her face when she noticed the piece of paper next to the bowl where Maura and she kept the keys.

When she unfolded the paper, she saw a short message, written in the neat and accurate handwriting of Maura's.

Wish you a good flight baby. Can't wait for you get home and tell me of your new adventures in foreign places. Love you xx M

Despite feeling a tad stupid, Jane lifted the paper to her nose to faintly smell the perfume Maura used on workdays. It made her smile even more and she quickly shuffled the paper into the inner pocket of her uniform jacket before quickly fetching the keys and leaving.

R&I

The office at the airport was humming with pilots of outbound flights. Jane still smiled as she waved at some known faces. Peter was waiting for her with a cup of steaming coffee. He too was in a good mood after his kids had decided that school wasn't so bad after all and that they wold go back on a daily basis without their parents having to force them.

Jane chuckled softly when he told her about new quirks and surprises. He was doubtlessly a good father, and the kids were lucky to have such parents like theirs she silently thought, when recalling the upcoming surprise party.

The pilot quickly brushed the thoughts away and focused on the flight preparations. There would be perfect weather for the take-off but somewhere during the flight the weather would turn nasty. Landing would most likely take place in shear winds and she was already seeing herself test reading Maura's book over her stay, because she had been to Vienna several times before and she saw no need to drag herself out of the comfy hotel room during thunderstorm and blizzards.

The book was on the verge of getting finished and she felt proud that Maura trusted her skills enough to let her beta read it. Moreover, she was more than curious to read the stories she had done research for.

Korsak had called her that the husband had indeed killed his wife and that thanks to her they had been able to nail the perpetrator. Maura was more than glad to add the newest development to the case to her book.

Love you too baby xx J she typed while waiting for the bus that would bring the crew to the terminal and was happy when Maura immediately wrote back. Jane rolled her eyes, and chuckled.

Bring me cake xx M

She loved Maura for contenting herself with small things. And she cherished Jane little souvenirs from around the world. Jane loved to bring her little gifts – most of the time something to eat or to drink, but sometimes also books or other stuff.

The way Maura expressed her wishes let Jane know how much Maura felt comfortable with her and how she had lost her social anxiety when it came to Jane. This made her feel proud as well.

The bus arrived and she sighed, putting her phone back into her pocket. She would reply later. Maybe a teasing reply she smiled and boarded the bus with the others.

"Hey." The smile transpired through the voice which came over the line. She heard some noises in the background assuming that Maura was still at work. "Hey." She smiled. "What's going on over there?" she asked, and Maura huffed.

The pilot heard a door being closed and the clack clack as Maura moved back to her desk. "It's been a circus all day." Maura whispered as if someone could hear her over the noise which Jane could still here thousand miles away over the phone.

She chuckled and waited for Maura to elaborate. "Two bodies have been found during renovation in a concrete wall. And they had to cut out a bigger part of the concrete because of the given surrounding and their placements. Now they are trying to move the block into the morgue, but it doesn't really fit through the door. Now they try to hone the block to a size which enables us to bring it into the lab." Jane could literally see Maura's flustered face in front of her inner eyes.

"And here I was thinking that I had an exciting job." Jane said in sympathy, holding back her laughter because she sensed that Maura didn't find the situation funny at all. She was sitting in her office, while people were kind of hammering away on a concrete block in front of her office, filling the hallway of the clean lab with dust. And all of it in the middle of the night.

"You have no idea!" Maura muttered under her breath. "I swear, this job!" she added.

"I'll bring you two cakes?" Jane offered and was relieved when hearing a soft chuckle on the other end. "Oh, I'm so frustrated. I definitely need a sugar rush to overcome this." Now Maura had to laugh herself.

They went on to talk a while about the flight and how cold it was in Austria. Then the door to the office got ripped open and Jane heard Frankie's voice in the background. Through the muffled noises she detected that they had been successful and needed Maura to check on something.

"Go." The pilot said with a smile and they ended the call.
