Chapter Forty Two:

Blake's return to the beach with Entoma and her pets initially gave Luna and Karna quite the spook, but the insectoid girl and the Reincarnation got along quite well… once they actually started to get to know each other over lunch.

Something that the Demi-Dragon Goddess took note of was that Entoma tried to be as far away from the ocean as possible but still being close enough to be able to actually have fun with not only Karna but also her pet-Rachnoids. Based on the fact that Blake found Entoma on an island was primarily a desert with an underground network of volcanic caves and the behavior of the Rachnoids, Entoma's father had most likely fused her with a Rakna Kadaki, a massive spider-like creature who typically inhabited either volcanic areas or deserts. While Blake wasn't entirely sure, she suspected that the color and unusually high strength of Entoma's golden silk was a beneficial side effect of a previous experiment the insectoid, or rather arachnid, girl had been subjected to before her alchemical fusion with the Rakna Kadaki. The reason why the Rachnoids listed to Entoma was most likely because the Rakna Kadaki she was fused with was the Rachnoids' mother, as Rachnoids were in fact the juvenile state of Rakna Kadakis.

Something that clearly evidenced the predatory nature of the creature that Entoma had been alchemically fused with, something that technically classified the girl as a Chimera, a rather broad term used for any kind of creature that was made through Alchemy, was a very clear preference for meat when it came to food. Something that was shown by two of the Rachnoids entering and returning from the jungle on the island with a freshly caught bird, which Entoma barbecued before ripping it apart, feeding her pets/minions and eating it herself, lacking quite a bit in the department of table manners. Though considering that she has been living in a desert where food for a predator was scarce as best for about three months, it was quite understandable. It didn't stop either Luna or Karna from feeling rather disgusted and possibly sorry for Entoma by the sight. The others had a more normal lunch, mainly consisting of hamburgers.

The afternoon activities revealed that Entoma had a particularly high Affinity for Alchemy and Entomancy, affinities she inherited from both of her parents. Alchemy came from her father and the Entomancy came from her mom, who's name was Arachne, (no relation to the figure of the same name from the Greek Mythos other than having the same name). And when Entoma asked Blake about the actual figure, the Demi-Dragon Goddess somewhat eased the Chimera's worry by stating that the actual Arachne was dead.

When Luna asked Blake how she knew that, something that earned the curiosity of both Karna and Entoma as well, Blake simply told them (rather bluntly) that one of her mom's… friendlier colleagues had told her Arachne's tale as a bedtime story when Blake was a young girl. Apparently the spider-woman of the Greek Mythos had not only met, but also fallen in love with and eventually married another legendary figure of the Greek Mythos, Medusa. A detail that said colleague left out, but revealed when Blake was old enough to understand it, was that Arachne was sadly killed by a man who… forced himself on her before killing her, which caused the spider-woman's wife to go on a rampage for revenge out of grief. While the Gorgon did get her revenge for her dead wife, the feeling of emptiness that came afterwards drove her over the edge, leading her to take her own life by overpowering her cursed eyes and turning herself to stone, leaving the mortal realm behind to join her wife in the afterlife.

With the mood pretty much at rock bottom, Karna eventually got fed up and asked Entoma if the Chimera wanted to help her build a new miniature village out of sand on the beach, as she built the previous one too close to the water, which caused the destruction of the old miniature sand village (when the Reincarnation wasn't looking, funnily enough). That managed to (metaphorically speaking) kick everyone out of the accidental depression, lightening up the general mood. Entoma in particular enjoyed the invitation.

By the time Blake suggested that the little family and Entoma pack things up, take a swing by the hot springs within the caves inside the mountains surrounding the volcano at the center of the island and finally set up camp for the night, it was nearing evening. Karna enthusiastically informed everyone that it had been the second best day in her life, but complained slightly that she couldn't bring some sort of souvenir back home. Something that prompted Entoma to strike a bargain with the little family, giving, or rather making, Karna a souvenir and giving the little family a demonstration of Alchemy in exchange for the little family taking her and her Rachnoids with them when they would leave Blake's domain. A bargain that the Demi-Dragon Goddess deemed acceptable.

"The deal is sealed, little weaver." Stated Blake as she shook hands with Entoma as Luna and Karna showed up by the entrance to the cave, carrying a pair of conjured metal buckets containing some sand from the beach and a broad assortment of pebbles in various colors.

"We got the materials. Need anything else, Entoma?" Asked Karna as she and Luna put down the buckets.

"A piece of chalk. The color doesn't really matter." Stated Entoma.

"Understood. Catch!" Exclaimed Luna as she conjured a piece of red chalk and tossed it towards Entoma, but the Chimera wasn't the one to catch it. One of the Rachnoids did so.

"Thank you, Elise." As Entoma took the piece of chalk from her pet/minion, who was apparently female based on the name, the Rachnoid let out a clicking noise that could easily be interpreted as a noise of gratitude for receiving praise from a mother.

"So, how does this Alche-thing work?" Asked Karna curiously as Entoma started drawing (to Karna at least) weird symbols within a rather large circle with the piece of chalk.

"It's Alchemy. As contracting as it sounds, I think a rather simple way to describe it is as a kind of magical science involving the understanding, deconstruction and reconstruction of matter using magic to power the process. Hmm, this one goes here and that one goes there." Answered Entoma without even looking towards the Reincarnation, while occasionally muttering her thoughts regarding what she was doing out loud.

"Uhm? Could you repeat that in a way that even someone who doesn't speak nerd understand?"

"You break stuff apart and put it back together in a different shape." Deadpanned Entoma with a roll of her (closest to normal) eyes. "Add this symbol here, and done! Pour the materials in the center of the circle, stand back and enjoy the show."

Following the instructions that the Chimera had given them, Luna and Karna emptied the buckets at the center of the circle and stepped out of the space that the circle occupied, Entoma nodded to herself and kneeled down at the edge of the circle, pressing her hands against the ground on inside the circle, activating it. As the circle lit up, arcs of energy, which looked rather similar to electricity, jumped all over the space within the Alchemical formula and the center of it all shined extra brightly. And when the light finally faded, the circle was gone and the center of the circle was no longer occupied by a pile of sand and pebbles anymore. In its stead was a small, but definitely well made, statue of a rather cute salamander-like creature, which Blake identified as a kind of Leviathan that usually lived in the desert she called a Nibelsnarf.

"Aww. Kind of cute, isn't it? Thank you!" Exclaimed Karna excitedly as she inspected the statue, before suddenly giving Entoma a hug. Something that made the Chimera go rather stiff and send the older girls a questioning look, to which they only shrugged.
