Chapter Forty-Two
"What a great day," I sighed happily as Edward and I drove home.
He chuckled, "Glad to be back?"
"Absolutely. I was going crazy just sitting at home! Hopefully, the business will pick up again. It was a little slow today."
"Don't worry, it will," He said.
"So, how did that meeting go today?"
"Eh, it was okay." He shrugged.
We were almost to the house when I felt the overwhelming urge to vomit. I grabbed Edwards arm and screamed at him to pull over.
He barely got the car over before I was leaning out of the car door and throwing up onto the street. Edward rubbed my back as I finished.
"Ugh," I said, wiping my mouth with the napkin he gave me.
"You okay?" He asked.
I nodded, "Yeah, I think so."
"Are you feeling sick?"
"Strangely no," I said, "I feel fine. I guess I just ate something that didn't agree with me."
"Probably the mix of the banana shake, and the chili cheese fries. And my tuna salad." He chuckled.
"Probably," I said as I rubbed my stomach to soothe it.
"Do you still want takeout?" He asked.
"Yeah, I'm hungry," I said, "I really don't feel sick, I'm just really hungry now."
"Huh," he said, "Maybe you're getting sick? You might want to go to the doctor tomorrow."
"No, I don't have time. I just opened the bakery and I want to get back to steady work."
He nodded, "Well, we have a family doctor who can come to the house and see you. Or you can go to his office anytime you want."
"Of course your family has a private doctor," I laughed, "I really feel fine."
"Alright, but if you get sick again, then please set up an appointment with him. The last thing we want is you getting deathly ill."
I laughed, "I'm not going to become deathly ill. I think I just ate something that didn't agree with me."
"Mm hmm," He said, "Where do you want to eat?"
"I am craving pizza."
He laughed, "Pepperoni pizza it is."
"You can get pepperoni pizza. I want sausage, onions, peppers, and pineapples."
He made a gagging noise, "Oh my god, what? You have never ordered a pizza like that. What in the world is going on with you?"
I snorted, "Nothing! Maybe it's stress or something. But that's what I want."
We stopped by our favorite pizza shop and got our pizzas. I ended up getting four slices, which is two more slices than I normally eat. Edward's convinced I have a tapeworm, because after eating the pizza, I ate nearly the entire chocolate cake I had baked the other day.
I woke up the next morning at about five and ran to the bathroom. Everything I had eaten was now in the toilet. I regretted eating so much the previous night, I felt like I couldn't catch my breath as I threw up.
Edward walked into the bathroom and kneeled down to rub my back. I groaned as my stomach twisted uncomfortably.
"Are you okay?" Edward asked, his voice thick with sleep.
"Mm," I said, my eyes closed as the room spun slightly.
"How about I call the doctor? He can come over and give you a little checkup?"
"It's five in the morning," I said, reaching for a wet rag, "I can call him later. Set up an appointment."
"Okay," He said, "Do you want some Pepto?"
I nodded and leaned against the tub, "Yeah. I think I'm going to take a bath though. No point in going back to bed."
"I'm up now, too," He said, "How about I join you."
I gave him a look, "I am not in the mood for sex."
"Not for sex. I'm going to have to shower sometime this morning. Might as well get it out of the way."
After we took a bath, I made some plain toast to keep my tummy settled. It was the strangest thing, even though I felt a little queasy, I was dying for a bacon cheeseburger and a chocolate shake. I knew at this point that something was wrong with me, so I called the doctor and scheduled an appointment for later today after I closed the bakery.
"I'm thinking about adding cake bites to my menu," I said as we drove to Bloor street, "I need to bring more customers in. Shutting down the bakery for so long really kind of screwed me."
"No, it'll be alright. Just give it a couple weeks, business will pick back up again," Edward said, "And cake bites sound delicious. You could make like a bunch of different flavors, sell an assortment of four for like five dollars or something."
I nodded, "It's not a bad idea. I also need to think of a February special. I'm thinking of a spin off chocolate strawberries. Something creative, that screams romance."
"Speaking of Valentine's day," he said, "I was thinking about doing something really special. It'll be our first, but I just really want to do something special."
"What are you thinking?"
"I'm thinking of an overnight trip," I opened my mouth to protest but he stopped me, "I know you can't shut down the bakery again for a while. But I was thinking we could go to the Poconos? It's only an hour and a half away. We could get a nice hotel room, have dinner. Leave Saturday morning. You could have Riley or Maggie work that day since it's just pickups."
I nodded, "That actually sounds nice. I would be down for a little mini trip."
He smiled, "Great, because I already went ahead and booked a room at the Carrington Manor. It's beautiful. I'll show you pictures when we get home. They have their own restaurant that's a farm to table style. It's got a spa too."
"That sounds nice," I smiled, "I would really enjoy it. I'll talk to Riley and Maggie and see if they could run the shop that Saturday."
"I've never been to the Poconos. I've always wanted to go." He said.
"Really? You haven't been?"
"Nope. Why do you seem so surprised?"
"I don't know, it feels like you and your family have been everywhere."
He chuckled, "No we haven't been everywhere. We've certainly been to a lot of places, but not everywhere."
"Well, it'll be nice to explore a new place neither of us has seen."
He dropped me off at the bakery. Riley was standing there finishing his cigarette when I opened.
"Hey Riley," I said, "So, do you remember when you were telling me about those marketing strategies?"
"Yeah," He said.
"I was thinking of doing something that'll bring in more customers. Closing down the bakery for so long really screwed me up. I want it to be busy again, like it was when I first opened."
"You should make an official website for the bakery. The Facebook page and the little page on the Bloor Street blog are good, but if you had an official website where you could let people schedule appointments and showcase the items you have, that would help a lot. Maybe an online ordering app? Where customers could order desserts online and swing by to pick it up. That's really popular."
I nodded, "I'll talk to Edward about that. It's not a bad idea."
The day proceeded on like normal. It was a little busier today, which I was thankful for.
Edward's POV
I was walking back to my office building when I noticed a black SUV sitting out front. I paused for a moment, then recognized that it was Emmett's car. I sighed in relief and continued into the small building.
"Hey Edward," Emmett said, "Slacking off I see?"
I snorted humorlessly, "Yeah right. I'm busier than ever."
"Is there a private place we can talk?" He asked.
"Sure, my office it right up here."
I shut and locked the door, telling the receptionist not to bother me with any calls for a little while.
"So, what's up?" I asked once we sat.
"We found Aro." Emmett said.
"Great. Where is he? I want to have a little chat with him." I said, clenching my fist. I was about one hundred percent sure he was behind this.
"Well, that little chat is not happening," Emmett said, "They found his body in the Hudson."
"What?" I asked; I was completely shocked, "He's dead."
"Yeah, they just pulled his body from the river earlier today. I already reached out to our contacts in the NYPD, they should be getting back to me soon."
I nodded, "Holy shit. I can't even believe this."
"Yeah. I know," He said, "So, this rules out Aro."
"I can't even think of that right now," I said, "Does dad know? They've been friends for such a long time."
"He heard. Him and Esme are heading down tonight. Carlisle wanted to make sure Sulpicia, and the kids were okay. And to help her plan the funeral."
"So who's going to be taking over? Alec's only twelve, he can't run the family."
"The funeral is this Saturday. I guess we'll find out then." He said.
"Shit," I reached over and called the receptionist. I had Lauren order a large arrangement of condolence flowers and a card for Sulpicia to be sent directly to her. I would order another arrangement for the funeral.
I groaned as I ran my hand through my hair, "Fuck. I thought Aro was definitely behind all of this. Now I'm at a total loss."
"You don't think James is working alone?"
"No I don't." I said, "He's smart, but he doesn't have the connections like we do. Whoever he sent to break into Bella's apartment, knew the codes. Aro wouldn't have just given him the codes. He was an ally. He would've said something or stopped it."
Emmett nodded, "True. Well, we'll figure it out." He said as he stood.
"Call me once you hear back from the cops. I want to know what happened and I want any leads they've found."
"Of course," He said as he walked out.
I leaned back in my chair and stared out the window. I didn't know what the fuck I was going to do now.
And this rules out Aro. It's unfortunate though. And before anyone thinks Edward is stupid for ruling him out, he is really dead and he was not behind any of this. Aro was the Cullen's ally. I hope you all liked it. Tell me what your theories are now! I love hearing them! Have a great week, I'll post again on Wednesday!
