Relieved she had eased Mei-Ling's distress, Kagome watched as the young servant girl wiped her tears. But the moment those tears vanished, that hopeful vigor once again returned, and Mei-Ling once again settled Kagome down on the stool in front of the vanity.

From there, she talked Kagome's ear off about all kinds of interesting things, most of which were inquiries revolving around Kagome and where she had come from. But was it wise to open up so suddenly to this person? Could Kagome fully trust these surroundings?

No offense to Mei-Ling, but I can't reveal too much. The last thing I want to do is garner suspicion, and there's no telling what Sesshomaru is thinking.

"My lady, where did you come from? What territory? What is your village like? I'm a bit confused about your relationship with his highness, but if you've only just met, I can't understand why he's brought you here… Unless…"

Kagome sweat dropped. "Maybe it's best not to think too deeply into—"

"Oh! I understand! Now it makes sense!"

"It… does?"

"Of course! What other reason could it be? His highness saved you from that situation you spoke of earlier. Although you lied in that moment of fear, he did not punish you for those actions. Instead, he brought you back and handed me off to serve you, my lady. It's obvious that he favors you."

Again, Kagome sweat dropped. Unlikely. Somehow, she couldn't imagine Sesshomaru favoring anyone, let alone a human. Then again, there was Rin, but the little girl was no longer in this picture. At least she didn't think so. "Wouldn't it make sense that he'd treat me as a guest?" Did he seriously go around telling everyone we're engaged? Is he really that dense?

Mei-Ling mused. "But… wait a minute, my lady. I heard specifically from Lord Jaken that you are indeed his fiancée. And Lord Jaken is not one to tolerate anything but the truth. Perhaps I am right then. His Highness does indeed favor you. It must have been love at first sight!"

Kagome almost choked on her saliva. "Then… he really took it literally… Just my luck…"

Mei-Ling giggled. "Yes! I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. It was also love at first sight for his majesty! You're very lucky, my lady!"
