Hello! Hope everyone is doing alright! I'm thinking that I'll write a few more chapters then be done with this story. Thank you all so much for your kind words, prompts, and follows. It has really helped me during these crazy times! :) Anyway, on with the story!
Daisy asks Coulson if he ever regret letting her stay on the team, set in s 5 when everyone thinks she is the destroyer of worlds.
The Zephyr creaked and moaned as May steered the ship through space toward the Lighthouse, or what was left of it anyway. May was delighted to have some form of familiarity once again; it had been too long since she'd flown the Zephyr. Fitz-Simmons were taking the time to discuss their engagement and enjoy one another's company after being separated for so long, and Deke was using his spare time to wander around the plane, enjoying his time spent in somewhere that wasn't the lighthouse, which left Daisy and Phil to sit and chat while they nursed their battle wounds.
Although the Zephyr was familiar, it didn't feel like home to Coulson. He was missing two vital members of his team, Mack and Yoyo, and he knew they were all still in danger. Everyone around him seemed fairly content besides the person sitting next to him. Daisy's eyes were glossed over as she stared at the floor, her brow was furrowed and she was gnawing on her bottom lip. She was unconsciously picking at the skin around her thumb causing it to bleed, a habit Coulson noticed she did whenever she was upset.
"That cut looks pretty bad," he said gesturing to her cheek, "when we get home be sure to have Simmons take a better look at it."
Daisy, in return, said nothing. Not even an eyeroll or sarcastic comment, which caused Phil's worries to deepen.
"If you're worried about turning that evil blue lady into a shish kabob, don't be. She had it coming." He tried to joke, but she just hummed in response still staring at the floor.
"Daisy." He placed a gentle hand over hers to stop her from scratching at her thumb causing her to glance down at their hands and close her eyes. The image of her yelling towards the quinjet moments before she destroyed the world flashed in her mind causing a shiver to run down her spine. She destroyed the world, and it could've all been prevented. Daisy herself didn't regret joining Shield, she found her family there, but she couldn't help but question whether the others felt the same.
"Do you…" She cleared her throat and forced herself to look at her father-figure. "Do you regret it? Keeping me on the team?"
"Do I regret it? What?" Coulson frowned, aghast.
"I mean, a majority of the terrible things that happened, wouldn't have happened if I wasn't there. Trip would be alive, you'd have both hands, there wouldn't have been an entire outbreak of Inhumans, all the people I hurt with Hive, I mean the world wouldn't be literally quaked to pieces right now."
"Daisy," Coulson began sternly, "sure there were some not so good moments, but what about the other life changing ones? You came on this team a complete outsider, but you brought us together."
She raised her eyebrow skeptically. There was no way, in her opinion, that she did more good than bad for this team. Instead of arguing though, she let him continue.
"Simmons was this shy, awkward young scientist who didn't have many friends. She was a stickler for rules and timid until you came into her life. The second you two became friends I noticed a difference in her. She became sure of herself, and willing to be involved in, what was it that she called it? Your shenanigans. She started standing up for herself, and others."
"She could always do that." Daisy pointed out, to which Coulson agreed.
"Yes, but it wasn't until you came around that she started to embrace it. And Fitz? After the accident his confidence was shot. You were patient with him, and after you got your powers, you put your trust in him. Not to mention you held that portal open when he jumped in to save Jemma."
"Yeah, but that damn monolith wouldn't have even been in our possession if-"
"Not true. Whether you were with us or not, Gonzalos would have brought that to Shield." Coulson argued. He knew that his words were most likely going in one ear and out the other, but he needed to say them. He needed to let her know just how vital she was to the team, to their family.
"Daisy, you may not believe me, or see the difference you make, but it's there. You brought out a side in May I hadn't seen since before Bahrain. Not many people can break through the walls she's built around herself, but you did."
He glanced at his significant other in the pilot's seat and let a soft smile wash over his features. It was clear that May could hear every word he was saying, but was pretending not to be listening in, for Daisy's sake.
"I guess." Daisy shrugged. Coulson thought he was nearly done with the conversation, and was about to drive the point home when Daisy countered with a question that caused his breath to catch.
"Your biggest regret was joining Shield. In the framework, you didn't know any of us, you weren't even an agent. So, do you still regret it? Regret forming this team?" Regret finding me?
"I thought I regretted joining Shield." He admitted and paused to collect his thoughts on how to address the obvious unspoken question. She needed to know that he still wanted her after everything. In this moment, Daisy was that lonely, orphaned girl, desperate for a connection and a family.
"You know the Christmas Carol? The Framework was kind of like that, I got to see the boring, miserable life I would've led had I not joined Shield. Then, you and Jemma saved me and I knew what it was to have a family again. Through Shield I was able to be an agent, a teacher, a father of sorts." He smiled and nudged her shoulder which caused her to crack a small smile. "This family we've created is something I didn't know I needed. I knew the moment you stepped onto the Bus that you would be part of our lives, I just didn't realize that you'd be one of the most important people in my life."
He took the opportunity to do his best to convince this girl, the girl he saw as a daughter, that he needed her. Daisy was essential not only to Shield, but to his family. He gently lifted her chin so he could look her in the eyes.
"Daisy, you have saved me in more ways than I can count. You have brought joy and laughter into all of our lives. You're the daughter I never had, and you make me proud, every damn day."
Daisy blinked back tears. She believed him, she really did, but it just proved to her that she needed to do everything she could to protect her family. She had saved her team countless times, but she had also put them in danger, and she couldn't bear the idea of doing that again.
"So, no Daisy. I don't regret it one bit." Coulson said and pulled her into a hug.
Well, you should, Daisy thought as she wrapped her arms around him. She knew what she had to do, she just wouldn't return to her own timeline. She savored the feeling of her father's strong arms around her. Tears fell down her cheeks, not just over the words he said, but over the fact that this could be the last time she felt safe in his arms. She had to stay on this prison of a planet to save the world, to save her family.
