Drabble prompt #23 Just Once

"Come on Jean. It will be fun!" Lucien peels off his singlet and socks before he heads towards the water. "It's certainly warm enough."

Jean laughs, watching him clumsily wade towards the deep swimming hole. "Be careful the rocks may be sharp."

"You really need to come in. It's wonderful."

"I'm not so sure." She watches him closely as he starts examining areas farther along the stream. "Lucien what are you doing?"

"Just looking for something."

Jean lets out a huff, wiping the beads of sweat from her brow. It really is too hot to be standing in the sun. She yells annoyingly to him across the water. "Lucien, Is this for a case?"

He bobs in the cool water, looking guiltily towards his wife standing on the bank, hands on her hips. The elaborate picnic she made at her feet. "I just figured while we were here. I'm just going up around the bend. Be back in a tick."

The heat of the day barely compares to the heat of her anger. "Just once I'd like to go on a picnic that doesn't revolve around murder!" She kicks off her shoes with fury.

Lucien is rounding the bend returning to his waiting wife when he hears a splash. He is pleasantly surprised to see Jean swimming towards him. Hoping that it is a sign that she isn't too angry with him, he flashes her his brightest smile. "Glad you decided to join me."

"Mmm, it does feel wonderful. I haven't swam here in years."

Lucien wraps his arm around her waist pulling Jean closer. His eyes open wide in shock as his wife's limbs surround him, her bare body pressing closer. "You're naked!"

"Naturally. You didn't think I'd ruin my clothes did you? Only a city boy would go skinny dipping with their trunks on." She says wickedly as she pulls on the waistband of the garment he is still wearing.

The spark goes off in his eyes, a look she knows very well. "That's it! Jean you are bloody marvel."

"Hmm. You keep saying. Now are we going to finish our picnic or are you racing off to catch a killer?" She speaks low in his ear, hands snaking around his shoulders.

"I think just for once the killer can wait."
