Chapter 43: Awkward
(Narrator POV)
To my guest reader who said Kevin can catch these hands... I love you! The funniest review I've gotten in a while. So whoever you are I'm sorry to disappoint but Kevin lucked out on that part. But there is still so much to enjoy in this chapter.
Olivia the whole night was tucked in Edgar chest just wanting to be held. Morgan came out the bathroom and told Kevin to sleep elsewhere, Dianne and Ulrich didn't know what to do. Chief and La'Mai went to bed confused. All they knew was dinner- if it even happened- would be awkward.
In the morning Edgar was up first, made tea for himself, coffee for Olivia. Got the twins some milk, then placed them in their playpen. When he came back with her coffee she was sitting up watching the tv. "Good morning."
"Morning, baby." He gave her a kiss.
"What time is it?"
"9:40. "
"What time are we going to get the kids? They are probably wondering where we are."
"That's what I was gonna ask you. Do you want to go back?"
"Yeah, I know you were excited to your family. The kids have waited so long to see each other, it wouldn't be fair to you guys. But I don't know if I could stay until Sunday."
"Me either. We'll go back today and leave. Maybe we could leave Noah the whole time, so that he doesn't miss out on time with AJ, Abby, and Sasha. I don't know about D, I think he will want to come home."
"Probably. The babies still sleep?"
"No they are actual awake. They woke up smiling it was so cute. But they are in their playpen." The spent time together, all four of them, for about three hours then took the hour long drive up to his parents house. "Are you ready?"
"As ready as I'm gonna get." Davion saw their car in the driveway and ran to the door.
"You guys just disappeared without me!"
"We came back didn't we?"
"No but seriously. Why did you leave?"
Edgar looked at Olivia and she answered. "I'll tell you when we get back home." Once they all walked in they were greeted by many good mornings. Morgan brought her over a cup of coffee, La'Mai joined and started to chat. None of them bringing up anything that had happened in the past 24 hours. Just a nice sister chat, then Kevin came in from the backyard. Everyone pretty much got quiet all you heard was the tv playing in the backgroud and children playing in the distance. Davion just looked around the room trying to read the room. Kevin didn't say anything he just walked upstairs to their guest bedroom. Everyone just stared back and forth at each other.
Through the day Edgar, Olivia, and Davion spent pretty much all the time out the house before it was time for dinner. They decided to leave the twins with everyone at the house, along with Noah because they all seemed to be good where they were. Davion on the other hand was not comfortable. He felt so awkward top of the awkwardness between the adults. His first time meeting his new grandparents was weird.
Back for dinner everyone gathered around the table including Kevin, you could cut the tension with a knife. Not even the kids said a word getting the vibe from the parents. "Look, Olivia- I'm so-" Kevin started but was cut off by Olivia.
"I don't want your apology. You said what you said and you can't change that."
"Olivia I don't think that's fair."
"Not fair!" She chuckled.
"Yes it's unfair because I am truly sorry. I have no excuse for what I said to you last night."
"Ya damn right, you don't." Edgar put his hand on her thigh, his silent way of telling her to relax and take a deep breath Dianne told the kids to go eat in the backyard, including Davion. As soon a the door slid shut Dianne had something to say.
"You four need to talk this out somewhere, but I will not have my thanksgiving ruined by you." She pointed at Kevin. "What you said was dead wrong. Go fix what ever it is that you need to fix because I will not have this at my dinner table." The four of them walked out of the dining room to the basement, but before the exited the dining room Ulrich said something to Kevin.
"Don't apologize when you don't mean it, it only makes it worse."
In the basement they were sitting on the couch around children's play toys. The first to speak was Morgan. "Listen to me, Kevin and I spoke earlier today, he's not lying when he says he's sorry."
"But there are something that just can't be fixed with a simple I'm sorry." Olivia said aggressively.
"I don't know what you—" he yelled
"Hey, you need to bring it down. I'm not gonna let you sit here and yell at her like she is Sasha." Edgar spoke with some authority.
"I don't know what you expect me to do, Olivia. I've tried to say I'm sorry three times but every time I try, you cop an attitude."
"Is my attitude not justifiable? Kevin, I don't think you know the full extent of hurt that you caused by saying what you said. You told Edgar, that I have been sexually assaulted," she emphasized "that at this point I should just start asking for it. Is that or is that not what you said?"
"I didn't mean-"
"Yes or no? Is that or is that not what you said?"
"Yes."
"Then why should I forgive you. Do you know what it feels like to be completely incapacitated, and powerless by a single person?" He shook his head. "Do you know what it feels like to not know if you're gonna be able to see you family ever again! Do you know what it feels like having everything- your freedom, your power, you dignity- taken from you! You don't know how it feels to lose a child, while fighting for everything that you are losing. You don't know how any of that feels! And for you to say that I asked for it-" she laughed to herself and shook her head, "you hit way below the belt, Kevin." Morgan who was still so raw from her experience was tearing up. Edgar had never heard Olivia express her assault in that way it was very eye-opening for him. Kevin, felt immediate guilt after what she explained.
"I'm not apologizing because I know you don't want to hear that, but I want you to know that I heard everything you said and I'm ashamed of me, that I would ever talk to someone they I did to you. It's rude, unforgivable, and in the end it just makes me more of an asshole. I'm not asking for you to forgive me or forget what I said but can we move on from this?"
"We can move on, because I'm not one to hold grudges, but you really let me down Kevin. I never would have thought you'd say something like that. Maybe someone else but you... never." All he could do was nod his head. He got up and offered her a hug.
"I am truly sorry, and I hope you can see that."
"It's alright, let's go eat." She pulled out of his embrace. Walking up the stairs Edgar grabbed Olivia's hand. "What is it?"
"You alright?"
"I'll be okay. People will say things..." she shrugged.
"You don't have to keep repressing how you feel. Nobody is around..."
"I know that what he said was not true but the way he said it made me feel useless. Like it's a regular thing with me." She choked out. "I've become to vulnerable and too reliant on you, my squad, and other peopl-"
"Me? Because you can be reliant with me. With me you are never alone I always have your back."
"I know but... it's not- I'm not who I used to be. I could defend myself." She leaned her head into his chest.
"I can't say this enough.. you are probably the toughest person I know. Because as strong as someone is to endure what you've been through, it takes and even stronger person to make it out. And you did." She nodded against his chest, but a crying baby took Edgar and Olivia out of their moment.
"I'll get him."
A month later...
"Merry Christmas!" The children screamed in every adults room, highly anticipating this day every year. Edgar, went to check on breakfast while Olivia was in the bathroom.
"Merry Christmas, mamma. How long?" He pointed to the food.
"All I have to do is make the eggs and the food should be ready." He nodded and waited for Olivia to come down stairs. Soon enough everyone was finishing their food and it was time open gifts. The last one was a special one from Davion to Edgar and Olivia.
"You have to read it aloud. It's mainly for you two but for everyone as well."
"Shouldn't you read it.."
"I don't want to, but if I must."
It read:
'This Christmas I wanted to gift something special to the most deserving people. Without you, dad, who knows where I'd be right now. You rescued me from myself after I lost my mom. You brought me into your home without a question. I have a family now, Three awesome little brothers and aunts and uncles, I know it's cliche but it's all I've ever wanted. Weekends with pops and grandma are days to remember. And to
Olivia, I can't express how much you mean to me. So express that feeling I had some help from the squad and Aunt La'Mai." He handed her the gift. He let them look at the gift a little bit. Olivia started to cry, Edgar teared up. Davion continued on with his letter. "I didn't come to this decision lightly, I know you have talked to many times about me calling you mom and I wasn't ready. You've been patient and loving. I would love for you to be my mama! Mom and dad... I haven't been able to say that since I was two but now I have a mom, dad, aunts, uncles, cousins, and even more special little brothers." He finished the letter.
"So what do you say... mom, dad?" He held out a pen. Edgar took the pen and signed and Olivia did as well. Then they all embraced in a group hug. "I love you guys!"
When they all finished the hug Davion and Olivia shared a very special hug. "I love you,"mom!"
"I love you, son!"
