Chapter 43.
Remember.
(Scott POV)
I was in my ready room.
"Captain's Log Stardate 50203.1, We're 3 days away from Enara Prime, Home of the passengers we picked up from a colony in the Fima system. Our high warp Capability has greatly reduced the time it normally takes them to make the journey home, In return, The Enarans, have shared their energy conservation technology with us, and perhaps more importantly, their friendship, End log," I said.
As I left my ready room and was heading for bed when I ran into Chakotay in the Turbolift.
"Turning in for the night," Chakotay said.
"Yeah, 3 days already and nothing so though I might as well as headed for bed," I said.
"I know that," Chakotay said.
"Just keep an eye on our guests," I said.
"Something wrong," Chakotay said.
"I don't know, I still thinking that they have been holding out on some information about them," I said.
"Another feeling again," Chakotay said.
"Yeah," I said.
"Let's just hope it is wrong for once," Chakotay said.
"That would be something Kathryn would have said," I said.
"She would of been proud of you," Chakotay said.
"I know, But it's not the same," I said.
"What you mean about that?" Chakotay said.
"I've lost a few things in my life, Some I may never get back, But there are some, I can't forget, I don't want to forget them," I said. As the Turbolift stopped. and the doors opened. "See you in morning, Chakotay," Heading out.
"Night," Chakotay said. As I got to my Quarters and checked in on Chloe and Clara, They was asleep together, fast asleep. As I went into mine room and saw the photo's I had next to it. It was my Pack. My Friends, Family, Allison. I missed them. But then I got changed and into Bed for the night.
XXX
It was already to next day near night, Clara and Chloe were staying at home tonight while I go to it, But I felt like staying with them.
But I was there anyway, Listening to one of the Enarans Playing something.
"That was brilliant piece of music," I said.
"You should thank Jora Mirell, She composed it," He said.
"I still think you're rushing the harmonics in the seconds movement," Jora said.
"I always liked music, but wasn't really a fan of actually playing it," I said.
"I'll be glad to help you if you like," He said.
"Perhaps another time, I'm kinda of tired, Excuse me," I said. Starting to head out to my quarters.
Then I got to my Quarters as Clara and Chloe was in their bed. Together.
As I just sat down and went onto my PS for a bit, Playing Red Dead Redemption 2 again, And got up the the Seconds Chapter. Horseshoe Overlook, Before I turned it off then went to bed.
The Next Morning I was already up and dressed as were Clara and Chloe, As we were having break fast when.
"Chakotay to McCall," Chakotay said.
"Go ahead, Chakotay," I said.
"Captain, can I see you in my office," Chakotay said.
"On my way, McCall out," I said. "Sorry Kids, Dad has to go to work," As I headed out and down to Chakotay Office where he told me about B'Elanna having these Dreams for the pass few days that the Enarans have been aboard too.
"And B'Elanna has said that these Dreams she's been having at so and totally real," I said.
"Yes, Which I think is more than just," Chakotay said.
"Agreed. We know the Enarans are Telepathic, Any other crew member's giving these dreams," I said.
"None," Chakotay said.
"Well, until there is, There is no reason for us to worry about yet," I said.
"I agree," Chakotay said.
"Good," I said.
"Kes to the Captain," Kes said.
"Go ahead, Kes," I said.
"Captain, I found B'Elanna outside of Engineering but she was unconscious," Kes said.
"On our way," I said.
As Chakotay and I got to sickbay as the Doctor was going to wake B'Elanna up which she did Gasping.
"Good to see you're awake Lt," Doc said.
"What happened?" B'Elanna said.
"I found you unconscious in the corridor near Engineering," Kes said.
"I was dreaming again," B'Elanna said.
"Not according to your cortical theta wave readings," Doc said. "The pattern clearly indicated that you were experiencing Memories, Specifically implanted memories,"
"Implanted?" B'Elanna said. "By the Enarans?"
"There's strong evidence of Telepathic activity in your frontal lobe," Doc said.
"My Experience with the Enarans telepathy seems to be very different from yours, Jor Brel Was standing near me when I received his memories, Were there any Enarans near you when you had your dreams?" I said.
"No I was alone every time," B'Elanna said.
"You've also been asleep or unconscious every time, The shared memories feel like Vivid dreams to you," I said.
"In the Lt's Case, The memories seem to have been placed in her unconscious, They're only emerging when her conscious mind is inactive," Doc said.
"Why did she pass out?" Kes said.
"A friend of min, Lydia, It happened to her once, But it was more like Nightmares for her," I said.
"The Synaptic patterns of the implanted memories are not quite compatible with her neural pathways, there's been some minor cortical damage which I've corrected," Doc said.
"Can you prevent further damage," I said.
"This inhibitor will control her Theta wave activity, that should suppress the memories," Doc said.
"I won't have any more of the dreams?" B'Elanna said.
"That's the idea," Doc said.
"What's wrong?" Kes said.
"If the dreams stop, I'll never know what happens to these people," B'Elanna said. "I mean this woman, Korenna, I feel what she feels, and right now, she is torn and confused about her loyalties, and I don't know what she is going to do,"
"I don't think satisfying your curiosity is worth risking brain damage, Lt," Doc said.
"I'm giving you the next 2 days off duty, Use them to rest, I'll speak with Brel and find out what's happening to you," I said.
"I'd like to come with you, Captain," B'Elanna said. "I'd rest a lot better if I had some answers,"
"Let's go," I said.
As we got to my ready room and we starting talking with Brel.
"I find it impossible that any of us could be doing this purposely," Brel said.
"You do posses the capability to share your experiences without mutual consent," Tuvok said.
"Yes, But un it just isn't done," Brel said. "I know that we had a misunderstanding before, Captain, but I assure you we have strict ethics,"
"We're not suggesting otherwise, We're only trying to find out how this is happening," I said.
"Well I have heard of instances where members of some alien races have been affected by the slight telepathic field we generate, but nothing as intense as what your Lt has described," Brel said.
"Well, According to our doctor, They're memories," I said.
"That's possible," Brel said. "She may be picking up stray thoughts and memories, from every Enarans on the ship, It must be terribly confusing, Perhaps that's why her mind has organized it into a kind of narrative,"
"Are you saying that I'm making this all up," B'Elanna said.
"No, Some element may very well have come from our actual experiences, I confess I may have crawled into a bedroom window or 2 in my youth," Brel said.
Not the only one I thought.
"You mentioned a citizenship award," Brel said. "There are several past recipients in our group. We may be each contributing some small details to your story,"
"Nothing really happened the way I remember it," B'Elanna said.
"It's highly unlikely," Brel said.
"We appreciate your help Jor Brel," I said.
"I with there was something more that I could do," Brel said. "I truly regret any ill effects that our presence here has caused you,"
"Well, fortunately those effects are under control now, The Doc was able to suppress the memories," I said.
"I'm very glad to hear that," Brel said. Then Left.
"His explanation is plausible," Tuvok said.
"Yeah, but not the only form of which I know, My Friend Lydia, She once had those kind of dreams which got her to do a certain thing at a certain point, B'Elanna," I said.
"I don't know," B'Elanna said. "Those dreams are so real, Maybe he's right,"
"The Enarans haven't shown any hint of subterfuge, any hidden agenda, they've been nothing but straightforward and honest, You're in no immediate danger, They'' be gone in another day, But, all of them could not be doing this. Maybe someone is doing this to show us what their culture was really like, B'Elanna, During day hours you keep that inhibitor on but when you go to be take it off, See what more you can find out. But then get the Doctor to check you out for any more damage, Till then the situation will resolve itself," I said.
"And yet, you fully intend to continue investigating," Tuvok said.
"I wonder how long it has been since I did anything that surprised you," I said.
"I share your concern, Captain," Tuvok said. "we haven't ruled out the possibility that this may be a deliberate act,"
"I want to talk to more of the Enarans see what they have to say," I said.
"I'll talk to Jessen and Mirell, they've been working with me in Engineering," B'Elanna said.
"B'Elanna you have done enough already, Get some rest," I said.
"But," B'Elanna said.
"You need to get away from this, We'll take it from her," I said.
XXX
"Captain's log Stardate 50211.4, We're approaching Enara and preparing to host a farewell party for our guests, they've made every effort to help us understand their telepathic abilities but it's still a mystery why they've affected Lt Torres so strongly, End log," I said.
After a while we were in orbit of Enara and we were down in the mess hall.
"I'd like to indulge in a new custom that I've learned, It's called making a toast," Brel said. "To Captain McCall and His Gracious crew, We are very grateful to you for bringing us home, You will always have friends here,"
Then B'Elanna showed up. And just said "Murderers,"
"Lt," I said trying to get B'Elanna to talk with me outside the mess hall.
"You tired to hide what you did but I know," B'Elanna said. "I saw Everything. The Regressives the Executions, Wiping out an entire population, and then blaming them for it,"
"This is most uncomfortable, Captain," Brel said. "perhaps a more private discussion would be,
"No, That's what you've been doing all along, Hiding the truth, Hoping that it would just die away quietly, Please this has to come out," B'Elanna said.
"I think it's time we all understood what's been happening here," I said.
"My Dreams," B'Elanna said.
"Like my guess, Real Memories," I said.
"Yes from Jora Mirell, When she, When all of them were younger, there was a group of people they called Regressives, they just wanted to lead a different kind of life, but they don't exist any more, do they, You exterminated them," B'Elanna said.
"These accusations are completely untrue," Brel said.
"Funny, But I seen this before, Someone passing along memories to someone else, showing them what happened, I know, because it happened to me once, This guy wanted revenge on the person who burnt his entire family but 3 dead," I said. "I could feel the rage, the Angry, and it was all form him,"
"You spent your whole life covering it up, and then you realized that someone was passing the memories on to me," B'Elanna said. "So you, you used me to figure out who it was, and then you killed her, but you know you were too late, Because Korenna gave me the last of her memories before she died,"
"Korenna Mirell is dead?" Brel said.
"And you have evidence that she was murdered," Chakotay said.
"No, They made it look like it was natural causes," B'Elanna said.
"You should know, Lt, that I spoke with Jora Mirell Yesterday, I asked her specifically about the memories you experienced, she claimed not to know anything about them," Tuvok said.
"Because she scared," I said.
"No She was afraid for her life," B'Elanna said.
"No you're lying, The Enarans would never do anything like what you're saying it's unthinkable," She said.
"It is the truth," B'Elanna said. "I know that you don't want to believe it, in fact, they're counting on that, they always have,"
"I know B'Elanna and I trust her, It can't hurt to listen," Harry said.
"Nobody thinks you're lying Lt," Brel said. "The poor woman has been ill for a long time, Her memories may be distorted or perhaps your perception of them was coloured by element from your culture,"
"No," B'Elanna said.
"Hang on, Are you trying to say that the member of my crew who I can tell is telling the truth here is lying, No, Because I could tell from what she have seen since that day it happened to me, Memories even as old as those from someone who hates having to remember a day like that, They can't forget it or Distorted it," I said.
"I know that it's easier for you to believe that I'm crazy or hallucinating, but this woman shared her life, Her whole identity with me, I was with her every step of the way as she convinced herself that what she did betraying the man she loved, playing her part in the massacre, that it was all somehow for the good of Enaran society, She showed me everything, No apologies, no request for forgiveness, just the truth, At least she had the conscience to stand up and realize what she'd done wrong, Which is more than I can say for you," B'Elanna said.
"I think it is best that we now prepare for our departure Captain," Brel said. "If you don't mind I'd like to go to your sickbay to attend Jora Mirell,"
"I'm going to talk to the Doctor, I want to see you in my ready room in 1 hour," I said.
Then I left.
XXX
"I know that I could have found a better way to handle the situation than just charging into the mess hall like that, I was just too angry to think straight, Not the first time that's happened, I know, But if you had seen what I saw," B'Elanna said.
"I might have done the exactly same thing," I said.
"You believe me," B'Elanna said.
"I don't lie when I said saw things like that before, I could feel the Rage, Angry everything he was feeling, when he saw that happened," I said.
"Then we've got to do something about it," B'Elanna said.
"We have to make this public,"
"You just tried that today, They didn't want to listen," I said.
"Then we have to find proof, Let me go down to the planet, there must be some evidence left of what really happened?" B'Elanna said. "Maybe there are other people like Korenna who might be willing to tell the truth,"
"Whatever the Enarans have done, It's not our place to bring them to justice, If they've chosen to conceal part of their history, from their own descendants, that's their decision, whether we approve of it or not," I said.
"It's not just a matter of history," B'Elanna said. "This could happen again if no one know it happened before,"
"We simply have no right to get involved," I said.
"Jora Mirell was murdered on board this ship, which gives us a reason to investigate, Maybe if we can expose the reason why she was killed, the Enarans will start to ask questions," B'Elanna said.
"I've gotten a full report from the Doc, he specifically looked for evidence to support your accusations, he didn't find any," I said.
"They could have used their telepathy somehow, in some way that the doctor couldn't detect," B'Elanna said.
"We have nothing to base for a murder investigation, I released her body to the Enarans," I said.
"So that's it, We just go on our merry way and nobody ever has to take any kind of responsibility?" B'Elanna said.
"We'll leaving orbit as soon as the Enarans are off the ship, B'Elanna? I believe the Enaran Engineers are collecting the last of their equipment right now, If there is anything more you'd like to say to them, Any of them. The best you done is tried to put it out into the air, Maybe one day they will start looking for the answer themselves, Thats all we can do, Maybe try to convince one of them to see the memories Korenna give you," I said.
"Thank you Captain," B'Elanna said. Leaving.
After a while the Enarans had finally beamed down as we left to resume our course for home.
I only hope the Enarans don't make the same mistake twice.
That's all for this chapter.
More to follow.
Stay tuned and safe.
Love Y'all
PEACE!
