"No, there is absolutely no way that would even work," Lucius stated, sliding into his seat. Ted rolled his eyes.
"Yes, it'll work! Look at it this way, Lucius, we pretend to date, Narcissa realizes how great of a boyfriend you'd be and falls in love with you. Then when we break up, you ask her out on the 'rebound', she'll say yes and the rest will be history."
"No one is going to believe I am dating you."
"Is it because I'm a muggle-born?" Ted asked, tapping his quill against the desk.
"And I'm not gay," Lucius added, rolling his grey eyes.
"Are you sure? You've spent a lot of time staring at the seeker on the Ravenclaw team, Davies?" Ted commented. Lucius' cheeks flushed brightly. He quickly hid them behind his long blond hair.
"That's purely about Quidditch," he muttered. Ted only shook his head. It wasn't his place to try and force Lucius to confront his own feelings.
"Right, so my plan?"
"It's insane. There's no way it will work and if my father hears about it...about me dating you..."
"Good thing we'll break up and you'll end up with the perfect little pure-blood ice princess, isn't it? You can even tell you father how she 'fixed' your interest in boys. Although, nothing there to fix really, it's not broken to like blokes, mind you."
"I don't."
"So then it's a deal?" Ted asked, putting out his hand. Lucius sighed and shook it. What did he really have to lose anyway? If this worked, Narcissa would be his and his father wouldn't be none the wiser.
"How do we do this? I mean, I've never dated anyone before."
"Me either? Um, I think we're supposed to hold hands, and eat together and I'll carry your books?"
"I am beyond capable of carrying my own books, I will carry yours," Lucius dictated. Ted laughed.
"Fine, they're heavy anyway," he commented as they watched Profess Flitwick walk into the classroom. As the class started, Lucius and Ted fell silent. Ted couldn't help but notice the way Lucius kept sneaking glances at him when he thought he wasn't looking. A small part of Ted wondered if it was just Lucius playing his part, pretending to like Ted. Another part of him, a part deep in his own heart, hoped Lucius was staring to realize he might just have feelings for him, the same feelings Ted had for Lucius.
"Class dismissed," Professor Flitwick announced. Ted and Lucius slid from their seats, their hands finding each other. Slowly their fingers intertwined.
"She's looking at us," Lucius whispered. Ted knew he was talking about Narcissa Black. He didn't know what Lucius saw in her. She was cold, calculating, not the type of girl Ted would like if he were interested in girls.
"Let her look, that's the plan, remember?" Ted asked, as Lucius picked up Ted's stack of books, adding them to his own.
"What's your next class again?"
"Transfiguration, you'll walk me there?"
"Of course, I have your books," Lucius stated, walking from the room with Ted. He could feel the rest of the school staring at them. He was carrying all their books in one hand, the other was holding Ted's.
"Here we are," he said as they reached the classroom. Ted gave him a smile before taking his books from the stack.
"See you at lunch?" Ted asked.
"Yes, maybe we could, um, eat somewhere other than the Great Hall?" Lucius suggested, knowing how everyone would talk if they were to sit together. They were in different houses, for Merlin's sake, they weren't supposed to mingle.
"Sure, there's a nice grassy spot by the lake, we could have a picnic?" Ted suggested. Lucius merely nodded at the suggestion. Someone might still see them, but at least the whole school wouldn't be watching.
"I'll arrange things," he said, thinking about how the house elves would fall over themselves to make him and Ted a picnic lunch. He had to admit he liked the idea of a picnic with Ted. He hadn't been to many himself, his parents thinking sitting upon the ground and eating were undignified. Lucius smiled. Nothing about this was what his parents would have wanted, or done. He wondered what his father would say when he found out about Ted.
"This is beautiful, Lucius. How did you manage to arrange everything in such a short time?" Ted asked. They were sitting on a red and white plaid blanket with a basket of food between them. The elves had outdone themselves in packing fried chicken, rolls, bottles of cold pumpkin juice and some danishes for dessert.
"I have my ways," Lucius stated, smirking.
"I don't doubt it," Ted said, taking a drink from his juice. "I was thinking, to really make this seem real, maybe we should go to Hogsmeade together this weekend?"
"Not a bad idea. I know Narcissa and her sisters are going. We could grab drinks together."
"We could," Ted agreed. Lucius turned his attention back to eating, while Ted thought about what might happen in Hogsmeade. The idea of going with Lucius, even if they were only pretending, brought a smile to his face.
"I might even buy you something, that's what couples do right, buy each other things?" Lucius asked after a moment.
"Yes, they do that," he agreed, realizing Lucius Malfoy had no idea how to date someone. Ted knew a lot of pure-blood families, especially the older ones had arranged marriages. He wondered if Lucius was in a contract, but didn't dare ask.
"Good, oh, look, the squid's sunning itself."
Their conversation died as they watched the squid for a bit before finishing their meal and heading back to the castle for afternoon classes.
Ted was waiting for Lucius at the gate on Saturday. Lucius had spent forever getting ready it seemed, but it was worth the wait. He was wearing deep emerald green robe with his Slytherin tie and a white button down shirt. Ted couldn't help but think he looked incredibly beautiful. For a moment, Ted felt he was dressed almost inadequately in his slacks and a pale cornflower colored shirt. Lucius paused, looking at him.
"That shirt looks good on you," he finally said. Ted smiled, his face lighting up at the compliment.
"You look amazing," he replied. Lucius smirked and slid Ted's hand into his own. Ted wondered if Lucius could feel his heart pounding.
"Where should we go first?"
"We could get coffees?' Ted suggested. It was a cool morning, not cold, but cool enough a hot coffee or chocolate would taste amazing.
"That sounds good," Lucius agreed, pulling Ted inside the shop with him. Ted ordered a coffee with cream and sugar while Lucius got himself a hot chocolate with whipped cream on top. Ted watched him take a drink, whipped cream getting on his nose.
"You've got a bit of...right there," he said, pointing it out. Lucius tried to get it with a napkin, but missed.
"It's still, here, let me get it," he finally said, leaning over and kissing the whipped cream from Lucius' nose. Lucius' cheeks reddened.
"That was, you have really soft lips," he commented.
"Thank you," Ted said. "No one's ever said that before," he added, blushing brightly.
"It's true. How's your coffee?"
"It's fine. Narcissa's watching us."
"Good, what's she doing now?"
"Talking to her sisters."
"Oh, okay. Why don't we head to the bookstore? I need to pick up the latest of Potions Monthly. My owl hasn't arrived with it," Lucius stated. Ted only nodded, following him. He'd kissed Lucius nose! What the bloody hell had led him to doing that? At least Lucius hadn't told him off for it, and said he had soft lips. He wondered if this trip would end up with them kissing. The idea of actually kissing Lucius... he'd never even expected Lucius to agree to this idea. Now, now he wondered just how far they could go before Lucius broke things off for Narcissa.
"I'm rubbish at potions," Ted muttered.
"I could help you," Lucius offered. "Slughorn'd be fine with me using the lab after classes if you're interested," he said.
"I'd like that," Ted answered, smiling at the idea of spending more time with Lucius.
They wondered through the bookshop for about half an hour, ending with Lucius buying his magazine and buying Ted a set of stationary with hippogryphs on it. Ted loved the fact the stationary came with a a silver tipped quill.
"This is beautiful, thank you, Lucius."
"Now you'll think of me every time you do your homework," Lucius said with a smile. Ted felt his heart fluttering in his chest. He couldn't help but notice Lucius was staring at him.
"Is there something on my face?"
"No, but we could go get some ice cream and fix that," he offered. The chill of the morning had lifted and with the sun peeking out, the day was warming up nicely.
"Perfect," Ted agreed, putting the stationary set in his back and sliding his hand into Lucius'. The ice cream parlor was crowded, it took Ted and Lucius a moment to find a seat. Once seated, they ate their cones in silence, exchanging glances when they thought the other one wasn't looking. Ted managed to hit himself in the face with the ice cream cone. Lucius laughed.
"You've got something, right there," he said, pointing to Ted's nose. Ted wiped his face, missing the ice cream entirely.
"Close, but here," Lucius said, leaning across the table and licking the ice cream from Ted's nose and lips. Slowly their lips pressed against each other, their tongues exploring each other's mouths. They broke apart slowly, lingering on each other. Lucius could see the three Black sisters sitting there staring at them. Ted followed his eyes.
"Oh, hi," he said, flashing the three of them a smile. They glared at him before leaving.
"Sorry," Ted whispered, looking over at Lucius. He had a feeling Narcissa wouldn't even care if they broke up, not with the expression that had been on her face.
"For what? Her? Forget her, Ted. I was an idiot about her, you've shown me her true colors. Now, I think I liked your ice cream better than the flavor I picked, might I have another taste?" he asked, leaning back across the table and pulling Ted into another kiss. Ted returned it, almost unable to believe just how perfectly his plan had worked after all.
