Skylor couldn't stop smiling as she finished washing her hair and brushing her teeth. She hadn't gotten much sleep but this time instead of nightmares keeping her awake it was ideas for her new restaurant and for the future. She just couldn't wait for everything to get sorted out. It would take a few months to set it up, and Kai would have probably given birth by the time she opened up her restaurant. She was a little worried about all the things she needed to open a restaurant.
At first, she was shocked by how much stuff she needed.
She needed to choose a restaurant concept and brand, create a menu, write a business plan, choose a location and lease a commercial space, obtain the right restaurant permits and licenses, design the layout and space, find an equipment and food supplier, hire the right staff, advertise the restaurant, and host a soft opening. Luckily, Skylor had plenty of time to set up everything. After she made herself a cup of coffee, she noticed Kai slumped on the couch.
He looked ready to fell asleep and had dark, heavy bags under his eyes.
"I heard you up in the night, you look like shit." She mentioned as she sat next to him. "Are you okay?"
"I didn't sleep well." He muttered, trying to hold in a yawn.
"Why not?" She asked and Kai thought for a moment, not sure what to say.
"I'm probably just being stupid, but I've just got this app on my phone and it sent a notification saying that I should feel the baby moving by now." He replied, placing a hand on his baby bump, hoping the baby would kick it, but she didn't.
"Well, you have, you told us."
"I'm scared Sky." He whimpered as tears filled his terrified eyes. "I feel sick and I can't eat."
"No wonder she's not moving probably got no energy." She smiled, trying to lift Kai's spirits. "Why don't I make you some toast?"
"What if something's wrong?" He muttered, his mind racing with all the possibilities that could happen.
"It won't be," Skylor reassured, but Kai didn't look convinced. "But why don't we go and get you checked out just in case?" She offered but he shook his head.
"No, I can't." He replied. "I've been before and it was just pregnancy cramps, they're gonna think I'm a hypochondriac or something."
"Who cares what some stuck-up nurses think? It's better to be safe than sorry." She frowned but when Kai didn't respond, she got up and grabbed her purse for the cab. "We're going, no arguments." She stated and Kai saw no point in fighting with her about this.
"You don't have to come with me."
"I am not letting you do this on your own." She informed him firmly and Kai smiled weakly.
"Thank you."...
"Why're they keeping us waiting?" Kai growled impatiently as he and Skylor sat in a crowded waiting room in the maternity ward. On the drive over to the hospital Skylor had called ahead to let them know Kai was coming, but now that they were here they had to wait until the midwife had an opening since they were clearly having a busy day. Kai wasn't happy about this. He was anxiously tapping his foot as he rubbed his belly as his eyes scanned the different patients and hospital staff walking in and out of the waiting room.
"They're just busy, won't be long now," Skylor reassured as she rubbed his shoulder.
"This could be an emergency!" He snarled, his fear growing more and more by the second.
"They asked you if you were in pain or bleeding and you're not, your just scared." She said, but Kai's eyes suddenly widened at a disturbing thought.
"I think I've done this." He muttered in horror and Skylor arched an eyebrow in confusion. "I've been worrying about what happens when she's born, if she's gonna look like Morro, or if I see her and feel nothing, that I might not love her."
"Kai, you alright do, I can tell."
"I still thought it though; it just kept going round in my head." He whimpered as he wrapped his arms protectively around his belly. "What if she knows? What is she can tell? Maybe that's why this had happened!" He exclaimed as his vision blurred with tears.
"Nothing's happened."
"I shouldn't have even thought it! I'm her mother, and if can't love her who can?!" He cried, starting to hyperventilate and Skylor was starting to worry something bad could happen if Kai continued to panic like this.
"Just relax, getting stressed out's not gonna help anybody." She tried to help him relax, but she wasn't sure if it was working. Everything froze when Kai sat up suddenly in his chair and gasped loudly as his hands flew to his stomach. Skylor was about to run off to find a doctor when Kai gripped her hand tightly and looked at her with wide eyes.
"What's wrong, Kai? Are you in pain?!" She demanded in worry. Kai shook his head and gasped for a second time before turning to her.
"She moved!" He whispered as he looked down in wonder at his stomach.
"Really?! Oh my God!"
"My baby's moving!" He squealed in joy as he looked down at his bump, at his baby. "I suppose you think this is funny little madam?" He giggled lightly like a child staring at their Christmas presents before grabbing his bag and standing up. "Well, we can go now."
"Um, I think you should still get checked out." She frowned, still concerned for Kai's health.
"But we don't need to."
"You're here now." She argued and Kai sighed in defeat.
"Okay, but you don't have to wait with me."
"I really don't mind."
"But it might be a while and I've just realized that I'm starving!" He smiled as he sat back down, but she didn't look convinced. "I'll go grab something and I'll see you later." He added and Skylor sighed as she stood up.
"Are you sure?" She asked and Kai nodded. "Okay, just ring if you need anything." She said before leaving Kai alone in the maternity ward's waiting room...
Kai sighed happily as he walked out of the maternity ward to grab something from a vending machine before he went home. The midwife had been very understanding when he told her his problem and fears about the baby not moving. When he asked if it was normal to not feel movement at twenty weeks she promised that this was very normal. Feeling a baby move typically didn't happen until eighteen to twenty-two weeks for first-time moms.
For people who had been pregnant at least once before fetal movement could be felt as early as fourteen to fifteen weeks.
Fetal movement prior to twenty-five to twenty-six weeks, however, could be inconsistent. If he hadn't felt the baby move by twenty-four weeks, he was told to call the midwife. They would check the baby's heartbeat and movements. After almost half an hour of searching, Kai was about to give in and go home when he saw a familiar face approaching him. It was the grey, braided-haired lady from before. He was starting to think she was living at the hospital.
When she saw him, she smiled and walked over to the brunette.
"Hello again, I didn't think I would see you again." She beamed kindly, which Kai returned.
"Yeah, um, listen, I'm sorry about last week, I was a little stressed." He apologized, feeling bad about before, but she waved it off.
"It's alright, I was a little stressed too; I was visiting my friend and she's going through a bad time at the moment." She sighed sadly before her eyes scanned over his plump form, her old eyes gleaming with concern and clear motherly love. "If you don't mind me asking, why are you back here so soon?" She asked, remembering that Kai was here last week and knew from past experiences that scans were not a week apart.
"It's complicated." He replied, growing uncomfortable.
"Well, you don't have to explain anything." She assured him. She thought about something for a moment before pulling out a pen and paper and started writing something down. "Listen, dear, you can tell me to mind my own business but I couldn't help but notice that you've been coming here on your own and I was just wondering if you would like someone to talk to; one mother to another?" She offered as she held up the piece of paper for him to take.
He did and saw that it had her first name and phone number on it.
At first, he wanted to reject the offer, but then he considered it. He knew his boyfriends, sister, and best friend had his best interests at heart, but they didn't know what he was going through. He didn't even know what was happening with his body anymore. He was scared every flutter and shift meant something was wrong and if he didn't feel anything then he was scared that his baby was dead inside him. But he knew that he couldn't keep rushing to the hospital over the slightest thing.
It was just like the boy who cried wolf.
He was worried that if he kept coming in with these false alarms, then if he did come in with a serious problem they might just brush it off. It would be nice to speak to someone who knew what he was going through, even if it wasn't from a medical point of view. Someone who had gone through pregnancy and childbirth. He smiled as he looked back at the woman and put the phone number in his pocket.
"I'd like that very much." He said and eventually, Misako and he said their goodbyes...
