Hey! This is the last one. Once again I just want to thank you all for your kindness and reading what I wrote. It really helped me through some difficult times. Once again, thank you all! 3
Coulson gives Daisy a pep talk about the team going their separate way after s7, Daisy is unsure about herself
Daisy sat on the cold, concrete floor of her bunk in the Lighthouse, staring at the half-packed suitcase. She had always been one who appeared to welcome change, but deep down it terrified her. As a child she never knew what a new foster home would bring, and as soon as she would allow herself to get comfortable, her life would bring about another change. New schools were the worst, everything and everyone was foreign to her, and she had to face it alone. As a teen she learned to expect change, but that didn't make the experience any better. Having to move cities or switch jobs still caused butterflies in her stomach, regardless of the emotion on her face. She often hid her emotions so she wouldn't appear weak, but this was one change where she couldn't just mask her emotions. It felt like there was a weight sitting on her chest and it terrified the hell out of her.
Shield had gone through several changes- deaths, new team members, and new buildings- but nothing like this. Through nearly every change since joining Shield, her family had been by her side, but now the team was going their separate ways. Daisy's family was moving on with their lives, and Daisy wasn't ready.
She placed a shaky hand over her mouth to muffle the sound of her sobs. Mack had reassured her that things would be okay, but she didn't see how. She wouldn't be fighting side-by-side with May anymore, she wouldn't get to pester Fitz-Simmons in the lab anymore, and she would never go on a mission with Phil Coulson again. Sure, she was relieved that he had decided to stick around for a while, but it wasn't the same. At the thought of Coulson, she burst into another round of sobs. Daisy had lost her father once before and she couldn't bear to lose him again. She was too consumed in her thoughts that she didn't register that Coulson had entered her room and sat next to her on the dust floor.
"Oh Daisy." He sighed and the girl jumped a little before falling into a hug, much like she did when she found out the OG Coulson was dying. She held tight to her father-figure, the only person she felt comfortable sobbing in front of.
"Shh, it's alright Dais." He comforted and continued to whisper reassurances as she let out her emotions on his shoulder.
"I h-hate this." She choked out and drew in a shaky breath. "Shield is… it's my family. This team is everything I have! How am I supposed to move on?"
"Daisy," Coulson removed himself from the hug and wiped the tears from her face with the pad of his thumb, "what is it that you are afraid of?"
Daisy squeezed her eyes shut and willed herself to calm down enough to speak. After taking a few calming breaths like May had taught her, Daisy worked up the courage to answer Coulson's question.
"Everything's changing. Everyone's gonna have their own lives! I'll be in space, Fitz-Simmons in Scotland, May's a teacher, and you're gonna be God knows where! We'll text each other every day, and then it will slow down to a couple times a week, then a few times a month, then all of a sudden it's been years! What if…" She blinked back the tears in her eyes and met Coulson's gaze. "What if we move on from being a family and lose what we have? I'll be alone again."
"You're right. We'll all be on our separate ways, on our own adventures, but if there's one thing I know for sure, it's that we will never forget. We won't talk as often, but Daisy, that isn't what makes a family."
He placed a gentle hand on her shoulder and she leaned into the touch. Daisy had always been very tactile, so she needed as much comfort as she could get right now.
"A family is a group of people who love and support each other, no matter the amount of distance between them. Daisy, the experiences we've shared will forever be a part of us, nothing could ever change that. The love we have for each other doesn't just end because we don't see each other everyday. After everything we've been through, this family will not let a little distance come between us."
"You think so? I just… I can't lose you again." Daisy looked up through her damp eyelashes. Her eyes were full of fear, but there was also a spark of hope.
"Daisy, I know it. We aren't going to abandon you. If you need us for anything, big or small, you call or send a text, okay? I know May and I will be eager to help."
Daisy fought back tears once again, but this time a smile crept onto her face. For over a year she had lived without Coulson's classic "dad" speeches, and she didn't know how she survived. He always knew exactly what to say to ease her worries.
"Thanks, A.C. I don't know why I'm so freaked out over it." She breathed a laugh through her nose. She felt like a child running to her father for help, she felt ridiculous.
"It's completely normal, this is a big change." Daisy flinched at the word "change", but thankfully Coulson didn't say anything. Instead, he pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
"It'll be an adjustment, but it'll be okay. It helps that you'll call and keep in touch, right?"
"Of course, A.C. I'm sure Daniel and I will have plenty of crazy space stories to share."
"Hmmm hopefully nothing too crazy. We've had enough of that in all our lifetimes." The two shared a laugh before falling into a beat of comfortable silence.
"I know I've said this to you before…" Coulson said, pulling his girl into a hug once again, "but Daisy, I am so proud of the woman you've become. You never cease to amaze me, and I am just so damn proud."
"I love you."
"I love you too, Angel Eyes." Coulson closed his eyes and relished in the feeling of happiness that washed over him.
"What do you say we go join the rest of our growing family for dinner? I'm sure Alya will love hearing stories from her favorite Aunt Daisy." He said helping Daisy up.
"Oh, don't pretend you're not the favorite, Papa Phil." Daisy teased right back.
As she sat at the large dinner table telling Alya the PG versions of past missions, Daisy couldn't help but feel a little overwhelmed with the feeling of love. She thought back to the years where she was living alone in a van, and now she had a real family. No matter what she would never be alone, even if she was halfway across the universe. This may be the end of a chapter, but not to their family.
