Chapter Forty-Six

Old and Grey

Wendy yawns softly to herself. She smacks her lips a couple of times wishing she had a glass of water or something to drink. Her fingers still and rest against Mest's hair as she closes her eyes.

"Don't stop," her husband mumbles.

"Hmm Mest," she whispers, scratching his head again.

She's exhausted right now, but also feeling like she's floating on a cloud. Mest hums out in delight and snuggles closer to her, right on the verge of sleep. She's been trying to fall asleep for a while now; she felt completely exhausted after making love to her husband and thought sleep would come easy like it did for him. Something was keeping her up though, so here she was running her fingers through his hair. Maybe she was still horny just a bit. Maybe one more round would completely exhaust her and let her pass out like Mest. She could just roll him around and jump on top of him. She moves her hand towards his shoulders.

"Hmm-Wendy-"

An explosion drowns out the rest of his words. Mest's eyes widen and he rolls out of bed, cursing to himself as he pushes himself up. Wendy kicks her covers off and grabs her clothes off the floor, rushing to put them on.

"Wendy stay inside- Wendy!"

Mest yells out after her as she runs out of the room dressed with her weapons; Mest was still struggling to put on his pants. She runs towards the infirmary and grabs her medical bag before heading towards the deck. The ship lurches as it turns, moving side to side with the enemy ship. Pirates jump on board and cannons fire again. Wendy reaches for her sword and gun, taking a deep breath before charging out.

Focus on protecting herself. Focus on her surroundings. Don't go for obvious strikes, remember her training. Wendy keeps her mind still as she strikes down her enemies. She focuses on disarming them, not killing. Mest is right, she's not a killer, but that doesn't mean she can't fight.

"On your left!"

Wendy ducks down and Erza lunges her sword forward, stabbing through a pirate's chest. She pulls her sword out and tugs Wendy to her side, standing back to back as they hold their swords out.

"Surprised to see you out here," Erza chuckles.

"And miss the action? I wouldn't miss protecting my family for the world." She giggles back.

"Stay alert and don't get hurt or else I'll never hear the end of it from Captain! Ha!" Erza yells running towards her new enemy.

Wendy yells out as she runs to protect another friend. She's taken out of the fight when she sees Bisca go down, clutching her arm. Immediately she runs over and kneels down, Azlack yelling out to her.

"Bisca! Bisca!"

"I have her! Cover us!" She yells, grabbing her arm.

"Ah- Wendy, forget about me."

"Ha, never. I have you, don't worry. I'm going to save you."

She drags her across the deck into the chart room, kicking the doors open and slamming them close behind her. She pushes a desk in front of the door, preventing anyone from getting in easily, before taking off her medical bag and pulling out supplies.

"Don't worry, I have you. Just stay awake and don't worry about anything else."

"Thanks Wendy."

"No worries. You can thank me when you're all better."

As soon as Bisca was all wrapped up Wendy went out again, fighting and dragging more of her friends to safety. By the time the sun came up she was completely exhausted and ready to knock out as soon as her head fell on a pillow. There is a knocking on the door and Wendy glares at it, reaching out her gun and aiming. She kept calm and steadied her hands, making sure to have a clear shot.

"Wendy it's Natsu! Everything's okay now! We've regained our ship! It's safe to come out now!"

Wendy takes a small breath, "how do I know you're not just saying that with a sword pressed up against your neck?!"

"Hahahaha, you're funny Wens." Natsu laughs.

"Wendy, you're safe. Now come out so we can talk about how you ran out of our room straight towards danger!" Mest yells.

"Oh... I still don't believe you- I'm gonna- I'm just going to stay in here until Captain is less mad!"

She hears laughter from the other side of the door and that's when Wendy knows all is well. There wouldn't be laughter if they were still in danger. She walks over and pushes the desks aside, opening up the door and seeing her crew on the other side. She lets out a small sigh of relief and brushes her hair behind her ears.

"How is everyone?" She sighs out.

"Fine. You got all the critical people, go lay down and rest. Captain's order." Mest frowns.

He can see it in her eyes how exhausted she is. Wendy looks behind her; everyone is all wrapped up and safe now. She looks forward to her crew and figures that Mirajane and Elfman can do the rest of it. She nods her head and yawns out lightly.

"That sounds like a good idea. Everyone just needs bed rest and to be fed some herbal tea, just in case any of the wounds were poisoned. One cup should do it. Be careful moving them."

Wendy is patted gently as she walks by. Her eyes can't help but scan the deck looking for any of her injured comrades, but all of them seem to be okay. Her eyes pause for a second when she spots... a group of the pirates being guarded, all of them tied up. She stops walking and stares at them... blinking slowly.

"What-"

"Captain's orders, lock them in the brig and abandon them on some island with food and water." Laxus tells her.

Wendy smiles lightly and looks behind her shoulder; Mest isn't looking at her, helping move the injured out of the room. She's going to have to write him a thank you letter explaining how much she appreciates him sparing them. She has such a sweet husband. Wendy drags her feet, wishing she could go lay in her bed, but heading towards the refresher instead to clean up. Blood on her bed was definitely a no no, especially since they were so far from any islands (and they didn't have any spare blankets). Just a quick wash and she'll be on her way to sleep.

"Is she dead?"

"Juvia thinks that we would all know if she was."

Wendy feels someone poking at her cheek and cracks her eyes open. Her vision is completely blurry, but after a while it gets better. She blinks as she sees her friends hovering around her.

"Wendy? What on Earth are you doing here?" Lucy frowns at her.

Wendy blinks again, "what on Earth am I doing in my own bed?"

Juvia snorts while Levy looks at her sadly. Lucy shakes her head and sighs out.

"Look around you Wendy."

"Look around? What are you-... oh."

She's not in bed, she's in the refresher sitting in the brass tub with lukewarm water in it. What on Earth was she doing here? The last thing she remembers is washing off and getting in to soak her muscles a little bit... and then black. Did she fall asleep?

"Oh man, is Mest having a panic attack?"

"I don't think he's noticed you missing yet; he was looking over the damage with Erza last time I saw him."

"Juvia thought he was escorting the pirates to the brig with Laxus and Freed?"

"I heard he was taking the treasure from the pirate's ship," Levy adds in.

"So I'm not hearing him look for me, which is wonderful. I need to get up and ah-choo!" Wendy sneezes out loudly, "no! This is what I wanted to prevent! I don't want to get sick, not now. So stupid Wendy, falling asleep in the tub. Has anyone seen my clothes?" Wendy asks getting out.

"You mean those blood stained ones?" Lucy asks, pointing to the pile of her discarded belongings.

"Yes... those... ugh."

"Here Wendy, you can borrow Juvia's clothes." Juvia says, wrapping a towel around her.

"Thanks Juvia, thank you so much. I'll return them, I forgot to grab some on my way here."

"Don't worry, just hurry up and bulk up. If you get sick we all know how Captain Mest is going to react."

The girls all sigh and nod their heads in unison. Wendy loves her husband, she truly does, but sometimes... he can overreact way too much. She dries herself off with Juvia's towel and dresses herself before heading out of the refresher. She can see sunshine from the windows; last time she remembered the sun was just rising up. Hopefully she can make it back to the room before Mest even gets there and can pretend that she was sleeping all of this time-

"WENDY?! HAS ANYONE SEEN MY WIFE?!"

His yells echo down the halls making her flinch. Close, so close. If only she had woken up a couple of minutes sooner she could have gotten away with her plan. Wendy sighs to herself as she turns the corner. Mest wasn't looking where he was going and ran right into her, causing her to fall down with him nearly tumbling over her. He catches his footing and spies his tiny wife lying on the floor clutching her head.

"Wendy! I'm so sorry! Are you okay?! I'm sorry love, I'm so so so sorry! I didn't see you- I didn't even notice- here."

Mest panics lightly as he grabs her hands and pulls her upright, brushing off the dirt and dust from her clothes. He places a finger on her chin and turns her head side to side, examining for injuries.

"Ah- I'm okay Mest, oh- I'm okay." She says, flinching as he moves her head.

He sighs out in relief, "good... so where were you Wendy? You weren't in bed when I finally got back in the room."

"I was in the refresher cleaning up."

"Oh... for that long?"

"I... had a lot of blood on me. Just wanted to make sure it was all gone, hehehe," Wendy lies.

He believes her, "well I'm glad you're all clean... whose clothes are you wearing?"

"Juvia's. I forgot to bring clothes."

"You look nice in blue, we should go shopping on the next island we arrive at."

"Sounds goo- achoo!" She sneezes.

"Bless you. Are you alright? Did you catch a cold-ah! You're freezing Wendy! How are you not shivering right now?!" Mest hisses when he places his hand on her forehead.

"Mest I'm fine! I just want to lay down in bed! Enough with the twenty que-ah-ah! Ahchoo!" Wendy sneezes again.

Mest stares her down... hard... without blinking... "did you-... fall asleep in the open?"

She stares back.

"Without any covers?"

She blinks once.

"And catch a cold?"

Her face is emotionless, "... it was the tub."

Mest looks at her and sighs. Without warning he leans down and picks her up, carrying her back to their room.

"I was close. I'll have Mira make some soup for you, and some tea, and some medicine. You're not allowed out of bed until we beat this."

"Ugh, you sound like me Mest. I think I just need to warm up and I'll be good."

"Doting husband, let me be." Is all Mest tells her as they enter the room.

He places her on the bed and begins to wrap her around with blankets, layers and layers of blankets, tucking her in until she is all snug. He looks down at her and places a hand on her chest.

"You scared me running off like that."

"I'm not defenseless anymore Mest."

"I know, I know... I still get scared though. Nice work defending yourself and the others. Thanks for taking care of yourself first."

"Thank you Mest for sparing those people. I know how hard it must have been on you."

"You made me soft."

"Hehehe, I like you soft and squishy."

Mest chuckles and smiles at her lovingly, "Wendy... I know you're no longer that small innocent princess I first met. I know you can take care of yourself, trust me I do, but I need you to know that if anything happened to you... I would go insane. You're at the top of my priority. It's you, then our crew, and then me."

Wendy furrows her eyebrows a little and touches his cheek, "how long have I been at the top of your priority list?"

"Since the moment I decided to take you into my crew."

"You should value your life more Mest."

"I do. Underneath me is the billions of other people on this planet. I've put myself above all those people."

"You know what I mean Mest. I feel the same way you do. If anything happened to you then... I would go insane as well. So I promise to take better care of myself if you do the same."

"I'm always careful, it's you that needs to be."

Wendy snorts and rolls her eyes again, "shut up."

Mest chuckles, "I'll make that promise to you. I promise we'll grow old and grey together."

"Hmm, I like that a lot. Okay, I promise, old and grey."

Wendy snuggles up against Mest and sighs happily. She hopes to dream about a house on a hill, a family, an old couple holding hands watching their children, and most definitely two cats resting by their side.
