Chapter 46: Saying Goodbye on their own terms

Billy took a lesser known route to the restaurant, and as they got closer, he looked over at her and smiled. "Now, will you please close your eyes?"

No doubt she was curious on what her boyfriend had up his sleeve, but after that first cooking experience, she promised herself she would never question him again, if she didn't feel anything was wrong, so she did it without a word.

Not long after, he stopped the vehicle, got out, rushed to the passenger side, opened the door and helped her out before walking towards the entrance of the restaurant. He unlocked the door, walked them inside and told her to open her eyes, and when she did, she gasped at the sight, a table that was dubbed theirs after their first date here, was set up with candles, then a moment later, a chef came out with two plates and Billy spoke with a smile. "Trust me, I cooked it, Rico only kept it warm for me."

They chuckled, and after the food was placed, Billy thanked him before telling him he'll lock up, so the other man nodded with a smile, told them to enjoy before walking back to the kitchen so he could get his things and leave.

Billy held out his arm and asked. "May I escort you to your seat, Ms. Reid?"

Vanessa nodded with a smile as she slipped her arm through his. "You may, Mr. Grissom."

Billy walked them towards the table, and helps her to her seat, then he walks to his side, sits down, pours them two non-alcoholic drinks before they enjoyed their meal, and as they were taking their last bites, Vanessa places her fork down with a satisfied sigh. "Wow, just amazing."

He chuckled after swallowing his last sip of drink. "You say that every time."

"And I can't help it, your cooking skills, especially at your age is through the roof."

Billy smiled shyly as he shook his head, speaking softly. "Vanessa."

She chuckled with a nod. "It's the truth and I'm sticking to it." She then took a breath and finished, knowing their evening, their relationship statues was about to shift. "You're going to be an excellent chef one day."

Billy took a breath before he spoke. "Yeah, about that, we..."

She cuts him off with a small smile. "I know what you decided, I knew what the decision would be the moment you were offered the opportunity."

He reaches for her hand and continued softly. "But, it doesn't have to mean the end of..."

She slipped her hand out of his before she got up and walked towards the window so she could look out in the street. "And we both know it eventually will. Our paths are going into different directions, I know I'm not the only one who feels it."

Billy stood up before he walked over to her and slipped his arms around her waist, and she closed her eyes at the feel of him while he spoke softly, brokenly. "I know that, but you want to know the funny thing is? I still love you, and I know a part of me always will."

She turned in his arms and cupped his cheek as she whispered with tears in her eyes. "Me too. You were my first love and I'll look back at our time and think of it with nothing but fondness."

He took her hand from his cheek with a smile and sparkle in his eyes "And I will too."

There was a slight pause before she cupped his cheek with her other hand. "In fact, I want to remember one more moment between us."

Before Billy could speak, she had slipped both hands from his hand and cheek respectively before moving her fingers to a few buttons on his dress shirt, causing him to take a breath before he placed his hands on top of hers to stop her. "Vanessa..."

She cuts him off with passion in her eyes. "Some people use this moment for multiple reasons, and I want to use ours as a goodbye."

He was lost for words for a moment before he cupped her cheek and whispered. "Are you sure, because I don't want to do anything that would..."

She cuts him off with a smile. "I'll be fine, I know what I want, and like I said, I know what this is, it's just one night, a goodbye on our terms. Billy, I want you to be my first."

The way he was looking at her and all those feelings rushing through his body, he couldn't deny that he wanted the same thing, he's actually wanted it for awhile now, but she wasn't ready so he respected that.

He closed his eyes and placed his forehead against hers and whispered. "And I want you to be mine." Then in another breath, he finished. "Your brother's going to kill me."

She chuckled as she pulled back. "My brother doesn't have to know." She then spoke softly again as she cupped his cheek again. "Nobody does, this is between you and me."

She was going for a kiss, but Billy felt that once they kissed now, there was no going back and she deserved better, so he pulled back and shook his head, which got her worried that he was backing out, then he smiled as he cupped her cheek. "You deserve better than some back room in a restaurant, besides, my Aunt would kill me if she somehow found out what we did in her office."

Vanessa giggled with a nod. "Yeah, you're probably right."

They walked back to the table, took care of the dishes and cleaned the table off, then walked to and out of the door.

He locked up and looked at her, which she gave him a smile while holding out her hand, which he took it and walked them towards the passenger side of the vehicle so he could open the door for her, but before she got in, they shared a soft kiss on the lips then he kissed her forehead before helping her in, and once the door shut, he headed for the driver's side, both feeling the anticipation every moment that passed them by.

Next Morning

The Grissom family was sitting at the kitchen table eating pancakes and eggs, at least everybody but Billy, he had seemed to take a few bites but then more or less was picking at his food, which Sara noticed, including feeling a sadness vibe that he was trying to hide, so she was about to ask if he was ok when he sighed and placed his fork down on his plate. "Thanks for breakfast dad, but I'm just not feeling up to it right now, can I be excused?"

While feeling a little concerned about his son, who never passed up eating anything he has ever made, Grissom nodded before Billy stood up, walked towards the sliding back door and walked out on the deck.

When Grissom looked at Sara, she was already standing up while excusing her from the table before following their son's path, causing him to smile slightly, of course she would be one step ahead of him when it came to their children.

When Sara stepped out on the deck, she saw her son sitting in one of the deck chairs and she started to ask. "Honey..."

Billy cuts her off. "If this is about me being late on my curfew last night, I'm sorry, I..."

Sara cuts him off with a little smirk. "Baby, you are 18 years old and are going to another country soon, I think you're beyond getting in trouble for missing a curfew." He started to chuckle a little with a nod before Sara finished. "Besides, you weren't that late." She then sighed as she saw her son go back to the sad state he was before. "But something is wrong, something happened last night, and while I know it's none of my business, considering you are 18, but..."

Billy cuts her off, knowing where she was going with this. "The 'mother' in you is worried and wants to make sure her 'baby' is ok."

Sara smiled. "I couldn't say it better myself."

There was a moment of silence before Billy sighed and shook his head lightly. "Well you're going to eventually find out anyways when she stops coming over." Before Sara could speak, Billy continued. "Vanessa and I broke up."

Sara lightly gasped as she sat down in the chair next to his as she softly started to speak. "Oh, Honey..."

Before she could continue, he cuts her off. "I mean it was mutual, there was no fight. In fact we..." He stops himself from going there, but Sara saw the look in his eyes before he shook his head and looked down, finishing, or at least tried to. "But it still..."

Sara cuts him off this time. "Hurts?" Billy nodded before Sara places her hand on her son's arm. "She was your first love, and regardless on how it ends, it's bound to sting when it's over."

Not trying to be rude, but he did want to state a fact. "No offense mom, but you married your first, only love, so how do you know the feeling?"

And Sara didn't take it as one, so she nodded while continued. "But that didn't mean we never felt heartache at any point in our relationship. Of course I know it probably isn't the same depth you're feeling, nor am I going to pretend that it is, but that doesn't mean I don't know a little on what you're going through." Billy just nodded as he stood up from his chair and walked to the deck railing, and after a pause, Sara asked cautiously. "Are you sure it's over?"

Billy nodded again, his emotions slipping as he replied softly. "It felt like a goodbye." Memories from last night came flooding into his mind, and he closed his eyes and shook his head, still feeling even more emotional, so he let slip what else happened last night. "I really loved her, mom, and what happened between us last night wasn't some teenage hormonal..."

Sara cuts her son off as she stood up. "I know you did, and I believe you."

He finally looked into his mother's eyes as he finished with a few sniffles. "She wanted our last time to be a goodbye." When he saw the question in his mother's eyes, he nodded before looking down shyly. "And yes, it was both of our first times as well."

She chuckled lightly at how embarrassing he looked when admitting all of what he did, before she spoke softly. "I'm not going to pretend that I'm an expert in that situation, because we all know there has ever only been one man for me."

Billy cringed as he shook his head. "Mom, please. I may be 18, but I don't think I'll ever be ready to..."

Sara cuts him off with a smirk in her eyes, but serious tone. "But as long as it was consensual, you two were well aware of what you were getting yourselves into and that you were safe, I feel you did nothing wrong."

"Yes to everything you just said." Sara had to admit she felt relief, not that she felt she wouldn't have, then he spoke again after a sigh while he wiped the remaining tears off his cheek. "Thank you mom for not judging me."

Sara shook her head as she cupped her son's cheek. "There is nothing to judge." She then smirked. "What, did you think that I thought you were going to marry the first love of your life?"

He couldn't help but chuckle in return. "Well, it did happen more than once in this family, so maybe a part of me thought that."

Sara chuckled with a nod. "Ok, you got me there." Then she gets a little more serious. "We just want you to be happy, and to have a love like..."

"You and dad?"

"Not that we wanted to put pressure on you like that."

"I know mom, but that's the type of love I do want, and while I'll always cherish what Vanessa and I shared, there has to be a reason why we didn't feel we could make it work anymore."

Sara nodded with a sympathy smile. "That's a positive way of looking at it."

He sighed again and shrugged. "What else can I do? Be miserable for the rest of my life? That doesn't sound to appealing to me."

"Not for any of us. If you need to grieve, do that, there is no shame in it, and when you feel you're ready to move on, then I hope you find what you're looking for."

Billy nodded with a smile before bringing her in his arms. "I love you, mom."

Sara sighed in content as she held her oldest 'baby'. "And I love you, so much."

After they pulled back, Billy mentioned he'll eat later before walking back inside, and while Sara was still standing at the deck railing a few minutes later, she feels those familiar arms wrap around her waist as he whispered. "Everything ok?"

She sighed as she placed her hands on top of his. "His first heartbreak."

He sighed too. "I figured it was something like that. You think he's going to be ok?"

"It might take him a little time, which is understandable, but I have faith in the end he'll be ok. I just wish that..."

He cuts her off softly. "That we could have stopped that heartbreak before it began."

"I know how unrealistic that is, and it's a risk you take when you're in love, but..."

Once again he cuts her off. "We are his parents and we don't want to see our 'babies' hurt in anyway."

She turns around in his arms with a smile and love in her eyes. "Still one mind I see."

He just smiled before asking. "So, what am I thinking now?"

She wrapped her arms around his neck and whispered. "That you love me, and our family very much."

He smiled a little wider as they moved forwards, confirming her statement with a kiss.
