The phone call came sooner than Ianto had expected and really… he was ready. He rushed to the hospital with his heart in his mouth, heading to check on the newborn baby, those working there knowing the lovely man who spent time in the NICU so they didn't think twice as he entered to look at the little baby in the incubator.
"Sweet little skinned rabbit" someone said "she's so tiny."
"Oh god" Ianto breathed looking at Walter all over again "she's perfect."
"Oh Doctor… this is one of yours!" one of them gasped, finally seeing the name on the little card.
"Yes. This is Walter's little girl" he gushed "My granddaughter… by blood. She is a replica of him."
"Oh my… how lovely!"
"Not that the other grandchildren are not as special…" Ianto felt the need to explain "Each and every single one of them a special little jewel but… this one… may be my last. Well… until the great grandchildren I guess."
"Oh my goodness… look at you. Hard to imagine you old enough to be a grandfather ever" one of the nurses giggled, then squeaked as Jack spoke from behind them.
"And his arse is still to taut I could bounce a penny on it!"
"JACK!"
"Well, It's true… that tai chi or whatever it is ... goodness… you are as lithe and sexy as the first time we… danced" Jack waggled his eyebrows.
"Danced?"
"Little ears are everywhere Tiger" Jack waved his hands around as everyone laughed.
"Well… I don't know about a Jewel" Ianto sighed, looking back down at her little face.
"What we are discussing too" Walter said as he entered with Curtis "Curty and I are stuck on two. Honey and Jemima."
"Oh. I like them both" Ianto sighed.
"Jemima. Not a bit… racial? I mean… wasn't Jemima a black slave girl?" Jack said softly "Or do I remember wrong?"
"It is Jewish for Dove actually" Ianto said, staring at Jack like he was insane "There is a doll on one of the kid's shows that is a black one but honey … it's a name, not a slur. Are you thinking about Aunt Jemima? The pancake mix?"
Jack looked horrified as he remembered the pancake mix he loved as a child and the black woman on the cover…. Shit. He had racially profiled the name, hadn't he. "Oh. Well… Jemima. Jemima… I … hmmm. "
"Harriet" Curtis suddenly blurted "For Harriet Tubman who helped free slaves through the Underground Railroad. A strong woman, a proud and fearless one… she will need a strong name and some moxie!"
"Oh I like that. We've not got a Harry!" Jack said with glee.
"Oh Cariad!" Ianto sighed "Don't call her that! Curt how is your sister doing? I have a wee basket here for her."
And that is how Harry came to the family.
