Chapter 46: The Path of Mind

Asulmagus took wing over the open ocean, the sun pleasantly warming his scales. Eventually, the shore came in to sight, and he was home. He was soon met by his fellow kaiju, eager to hear what he'd been up to.

"Welcome back Asulmagus," said Godzilla, "From the rumors we've been hearing, it sounds like you had an interesting year.

"You know, the usual," said Asulmagus, "learning magic, getting taught by a werewolf, was threatened by soul-sucking wraiths, aided in the capture of a murderer".

"Explain," said Godzilla.

Asulmagus told of his meeting with Remus Lupin, and his encounter with the Dementors, and learning of his connection to this year's DADA professor, and how by chance they uncovered Pettegrew and had him taken into custody.

"Those wraiths," said Mothra coldly, "they are an abomination, and all the world would be better if they were destroyed".

"Wow, they must be really bad if Mothra despises them so," said Rodan.

"You must understand," explained Mothra, "these are more than just wraiths, worse than simple malevolent spirits: They are shadow demons. They do not belong in this realm. If it would not put our place in the world at risk, I would suggest we travel to this 'Azkaban' and raze that place down to the foundation stones immediately. For now, we must wait. The time of reckoning will come. Do these Wizards not possess any sense?"

"Unfortunately, common sense is something they sorely lack, for the most part," said Asulmagus.

"Anything else happen?" asked Godzilla.

"I also found another trustworthy human," said Asulmagus, "One Sirius Black, who is my sworn godfather".

"And what make you so sure he can be trusted?" said Angurius, "why didn't you know about him before?"

"I know he can be trusted be he's my sworn godfather: his oath is supported by magic. If he were to break it by actively and knowingly trying to harm me, the magic will punish or even kill him," said Asulmagus, "as for why'd I'd not met him before, he was thrown into prison without a trial for 12 years for a crime he didn't commit. Oh, by the way, he wanted to extend his thanks to all of you for being there for me".

"More and more I'm regretting the necessity of you going among these mages, the more I learn, the lower my opinion fall, barring those who actually have sense," said Mothra, "what of your battle with Gigan?"

Asulmagus glanced around at his family here, seeing a mix of interest and concern in their eyes.

"It said something about being sent to 'recover' me," said Asulmagus, "It insisted I either come along quietly or it would neutralize me to procure a sample".

"Welcome to the 'aliens want your DNA club'," said Rodan, "they probably wanted to try and clone you or something".

"A couple of other things happened during the battle," said Asulmagus, "The Headmaster of Hogwarts has fully revealed himself to be an enemy of our kind. I've known he was trouble but he attempted some sort of mind control spell on Gigan… I think he damaged its programming instead, making it go berserk. When I went to use my Nova Breath, I found I could empower it with my magic".

"This magic used against Gigan to effect its mind, it is troubling," said Mothra, "speak to me later, Asulmagus, we shall need to train you to properly resist these types of assault".

The kaiju went about their day, and that evening Asulmagus made his way to Mothra's den. The mystical air that always surrounded her was far stronger than usual.

"Right on time," said Mothra, "Sit, young one".

Asulmagus did as she requested, and waited for what Mothra would require of him.

"Now then," said Mothra "I have asked you here to teach you to shield your mind from intrusion and control. To do so, you must be prepared to master your own mind, be able to look at the events of your past with an objective eye and accept them fully. For this, you must look within, walk the roads of memory to know them so no foe may do the same. It may be difficult, painful at times, but fear not: I will be there beside you, to guide you so you will not become lost within yourself. Are you ready?"

"Yes," said Asulmagus.

"Then let us begin," said Mothra.

She began to vibrate her wings, producing a frequency that made him feel drowsy. A moment later, he was out. Mothra settled nearby, and the training began.

Asulmagus' Mindscape

Asulmagus blinked and slowly stood. As he did, he noticed the world seemed indistinct, the edges blending together. As he continued to try and work out where he was, he noticed he was different, it was like he was in a hybrid of his human and kaiju self, a humanoid bipedal dragon covered in the same blue scales.

"Hello again, Asulmagus," said a new voice.

He turned, and saw what could only be Mothra, her form similarly changed to a humanoid moth, complete with insectoid face.

"Why are we in these forms?" asked Asulmagus.

"It is the form you mind has decided upon for us to walk these paths," Mothra, "shall we?"

A path appeared before them, and they began to venture down it. They came to an island, a worn, almost ephemeral, door upon it.

"An old memory," explained Mothra, "half-remembered. Shall we take a look?"

Asulmagus opened the door, and they stepped through.

'They saw a busy human home, with a woman his fiery hair, a man with messy black hair, a second black haired man filled with mirth, a man with tired, kind eyes, all entertaining an infant. The laughing man suddenly turned into a large black dog, and played gently with the baby.'

They were on the island again. The door was closed.

"What did you see within?" asked Mothra.

"My birth family and their friends," said Asulmagus, "it must have been before they went into hiding, as they were together. Pettegrew, the one who would betray them was not present".

"Good," said Mothra, "let's move on".

They continued down the path, coming to a door with a number 4 on it. The door felt like ominous, and he knew why. Mothra picked up on it too.

"A dark memory," said Mothra, "one carrying pain and sorrow. You must master it".

Asulmagus gripped the doorknob, and opened it.

'Aunt Petunia glowered over a young Harry Potter, the child barely able to reach the stovetop even with the footstool. Smoke began to rise from the frying pan and Petunia screamed, and began to chase Harry with the still hot frying pan. She struck him, not caring about the pain she was inflicting on him. He was tossed roughly into the cupboard under the stairs, covered in burn marks.'

"What did you see within?" asked Mothra.

Asulmagus took some calming breaths to cool his core. He needed to accept this. It was the past, and could no longer truly hurt him. They could no longer hurt him.

"I see my human aunt," said Asulmagus, "It was the first day she made me cook food for them. I was too young to be doing such a thing. She hurt me when it went wrong. She cared little for me. Saw me was a burden. She was wrong".

"Good," said Mothra, "I see this remembrance still pains you. You've did well at distancing yourself so far. One more memory for this session, let's go".

The path led them further on, and to another number 4 door. This one shifting and warping with energy, and also stained with more pain than the last.

"Can you guess what this door leads, to, young one?" asked Mothra.

"The night I changed," said Asulmagus, "the night I became… me".

"Correct," said Mothra, "shall we?"

Asulmagus opened the door, and they entered.

'Uncle Vernon was beating Harry Potter, going further than ever before. The lights flickered and dimmed. Harry writhed on the ground screaming as Vernon was blasted back. Wild surges of magic arced around the room like bolts of lightning. The magic from Harry pulsed outwards again, before something shifted. The wild magic forked inwards pouring into Harry's body and enrobing him in a shell of energy as it spiraled towards his core. Something else coursed by, a lost spirit resembling a hatching dragon caught up in the maelstrom and merging with his own. Through the shell of magic, the changes were already beginning to take place, transforming him from a human into what he now was. Suddenly everything exploded in a burst of blue light, and #4 Privet Drive was gone.'

"Do you understand what you saw, young one?" asked Mothra.

"My Uncle harmed me brutally," said Asulmagus, "my magic rebelled, and tried to strike back as a final act to halt the attack. A lost spirit was caught up in this event, and became merged with me. The magic shifted, pouring back into me to begin my transformation and take me away from that place. The excess energy destroyed the house. I am here as I am now because a twist of fate saved me from what would have otherwise resulted in my death"

"Good, you are understanding what is important," said Mothra, "and the fact that the events that made you what you are will likely not reoccur within the lifetime of our world. Let us return to real world now, so you may process what you have learned".

The world shifted, and he felt himself being pulled skywards

Monster Island

Asulmagus woke, and found himself back in Mothra's den. Everything seemed normal now, both of them back to their familiar kaiju forms.

"You may go for tonight," said Mothra, "and good work. We shall continue later".

Asulmagus left Mothra's lair, and strode down the beach. His mind was still working to processing these memories. Without thinking about it, he ended up on the same patch of sand where he'd first arrived on the island. He wasn't sure he could sleep right now, so he simply sat, watching the stars. Heavy footfalls informed him he had company. He glanced over, and saw Godzilla had come to join him.

"Can't sleep?" asked Godzilla.

"Yeah, too much on my mind," said Asulmagus.

"Sounds about right," said Godzilla, "The old Moth's teaching methods are effective, but do tend to have that side effect. We all here have gone through her mental training. Anything you need, we'd be happy to listen. Never forget, Asulmagus, you're one of us, you're family".

Family, that's right. They thought of him as part of their people. No matter what would happen in the days to come, they'd be here for him.

"Thanks, Godzilla," said Asulmagus, "that means a lot".

"Anytime, kid," assured Godzilla, "anytime".

A/N: And there we go! Mothra's appearance within the mindscape was inspire by the Moth Tribe from Hollow Knight. Anyway, next time, Harry pays a visit to Norberta and discovers something has changed that there has been a shift in the winds. see you then!
