Cammie POV
We arrived at our safehouse on the outskirts of London. It was an abandoned warehouse in a quiet industrial estate. Somewhere inconspicuous and easy to hide.
Liz had set up in the corner. Monitors & cables everywhere - a trip hazard waiting to happen...and with Liz, it happens a lot.
Grant directed Walter to a makeshift interrogation room in one of the old offices. We handcuffed him to the chair. He looked around panicked, his eyes wide with fear.
'We're not going to hurt you' I said, trying to reassure him.
'Speak for yourself' Grant muttered. I glared at him quickly.
'What do you want with me?' Walter asked
'Have you been in contact with the others?' I asked
'No' He shook his head 'We never…' He took a deep breath, he looked up at me, staring straight into my soul 'You got close...too close. Once we realised you were alive and that Catherine was after us, we did what any sane person would do.'
'You hid' I finished for him. He gave a single nod.
'What was I close to?' I asked. He tilted his head, narrowing his eyes slightly.
'You don't remember?' His pitch raised slightly, amused. He chuckled slightly. 'Wow. I never truly believed the rumours about Dr Steve...it seems I underestimated him'
'Like you underestimated me' I quipped leaning closer 'Where are the others?'
'I don't know where they are'
'I don't quite believe that' I said 'In the library, you said you weren't part of the Circle, yet you admitted you wanted, and probably still want, me dead. You know where they are, don't you?'
'I don't know where they are'
I sighed. Time to change tactics.
'Look, we can do this all day, but that guy over there' I pointed to Grant 'Me and him aren't friends'
'We have a mutual understanding' Grant added, flipping his small knife in his hand.
'And the only reason why you aren't lying in a pool of your own blood is because I'm sat here stopping him. If you don't tell us everything you know, we'll either put you back on the street, an easy target for Catherine; or you deal with him'
Walter gulped slightly.
'Good spy-bad spy routine? Such a cliche'
I tilted my head, studying him.
'You're acting like this because you feel safe. Acting up, trying to control the room because you know that we need you alive. That's where you're wrong. We were able to find you with no information, just a name and intuition. So if you don't want to give us information, I'll drop you off right outside Interpol or MI6. I know a few people who would be very glad to see you'
I stood up, heading towards the door. I paused, looking back at Grant.
'Do what you want, just make sure you clean up after'
Grant nodded, clicking his knuckles. Walter's face dropped.
'Wait, wait, wait!' Walter shouted. 'I'll tell you everything'
…
I was standing on the edge of a clearing. The wind had picked up causing my hair to wrap around my face. I shivered, not from the chill in the air, but from fear.
Something wasn't right.
'Cameron?' I turn around at the voice, seeing my dad standing in front of me.
'Dad?' He had a few cuts on his face, a gash on his head. 'Dad what's going on?' I asked. He gave me a small smile.
'It's okay, Kiddo. Everything's going to be okay'
There was a sudden weight in my right hand. I glanced down to see a gun in my hand.
'Dad…' My voice croaked as I looked back up at him. There were tears in his eyes. He gave me a single nod.
'It's okay, Kiddo. It's not your fault. I won't feel anything.'
'Dad…'
'I'll be okay. You'll be okay. I love you'
'Dad-'
Suddenly there was a gunshot. A pool of blood grew from his chest as he fell to the ground.
'NO!' I screamed shooting up in bed, a sweat film over my body. I could feel my heartbeat ringing in my ears. I took a few deep breaths to calm down. I don't know if that's what happened, if my brain was giving me a memory or plaguing me with delusion. Sometimes I couldn't even trust my mind.
In this part of the warehouse, we were using as our bedrooms, camping beds or just lying on the floor.
I knew sleep would avade me now. I got up, heading through to our meeting area, where one wall is covered with information, paper clippings and surveillance photos. Some of Zach.
As I approached, I saw Grant sitting there, nursing a whiskey.
I backed up, not wanting to disturb when the floorboards creaked underneath me. Grant glanced up.
'Sorry' I began 'I didn't realised you were here'
'It's fine' He gestured to the space on the sofa next to him. I sat down 'Couldn't sleep?' He began to pour me a drink.
'Nightmare' I said. Grant eyed me suspiciously as he handed the glass to me.
'You have a few of those, don't you?'
'More than I'd like to admit' I muttered, taking a sip.
We sat in silence for a while, studying the wall. Our last trace of Zach was from a week ago placing him in mainland Europe. But he could be anywhere. He could have been at the university earlier…
'I'm sorry' I began 'for not trusting you guys earlier. We wouldn't be this far along if it wasn't for you and Jonas'
'Wow' Grant nodded 'It's only taken you three months to apologise' He glances at me, giving me a small smile 'I feel special'
I find myself smiling too. We both take another sip, turning back to the wall.
'What do you think will happen when we find him?' I asked
'I don't know. It depends if his mom's messed with his head or not' He took another drink. 'Can I ask you something?'
'Sure'
'That bracelet' He points to my wrist 'It has a tracker, doesn't it?'
'Had a tracker' I fiddled with the bracelet 'It was only ever a prototype. The battery was defective. It stopped working a few months ago. Besides, if Zach had it...it would be useless now'
'So why do you still wear it?' He asked. I hesitated for a moment, which Grant picked up on.
'You love him, don't you?'
'Grant-'
We were interrupted by Liz's computer alerting us to something. Both of us headed over to see the update.
'Holy Shit' Grant exclaimed
'What?' I asked, coming closer to the screen.
'It's a police report. The heir to the Delauhunt name was found dead after a mysterious boating accident in the French Riviera.'
'Shit' I began to pace 'Catherine's getting closer to the others, we're running out of time'
'That's not all' Grant continued to scroll further down the report. 'The police have published some cctv footage. Seems to be from an alleyway moments after the explosion'
I glanced over his shoulder, studying a short clip. It was dark, hard to make out to figure's features. But to us, there was no denying who it was. The build, the way they checked their surroundings all the way to how they walked. We knew who it was.
'Oh my God...it's Zach'
Author's note: Hello everyone! I have some good & bad news! The good news is that I've been offered a dream job which will launch my career, I'm super excited but the bad news is that I may not be as active with posting as I have been. I'm going to be working all different hours & days each week so cannot guarantee when I'll upload. I'm not abandoning this story, but it may take a little longer. I don't know when I'll see you again, but I will see you all soon. Take care xxx
gymnast1150: Yep. Zach and Cammie have been apart for three months. I feel as though Zach is doing everything in his power to piss Catherine off & seeing that Cammie is getting closer is making everything that more interesting. Has he become a full member? Is he responsible for this latest attack? Winter Soldier Zach is a vibe. I am absolutely in love with Bucky Barnes & Sebastian Stan as a result. I think Grant & Cammie are beginning to develop a friendship. I loved their little moments in this chapter - Grant can see right through her, it's quite sweet. YES! I wanted it to be a parallel between Bex & Zach! Zammie reunion pending in the next chapter! xxx
Guest: Thank you so much! Not Zammie in this, but in the next one for sure! xxx
GallagherGirlzRule: I have a sort of idea as to where I want the story to go, but I don't know exactly if it will end that way. So it's a maybe for now. Thank you so much for your support xxx
Smiles180: Zach wore the bracelet to keep close to Cammie and it seems that Cammie has been doing the same thing. I knew the bracelet would be too easy to trace each other but I had to include it! It's more symbolic for them both xxx
esraxmish: Nick will be coming back at some point! I love his friendship with Cammie xxx
Guest: Next chapter is here! Sorry it's so late! Zammie reunion soon xxx
