The smell of disinfectant and medicine wafted in Emily's nose as she sat patiently in the waiting room, biting her lip and staring blankly ahead. Her thoughts whirled in the back of her mind, but it all seemed distant and warped as she sat in silence. She pushed all thought and emotion away, to keep her from crying and to remain strong.
"Emily Crane?" Called a nurse as she walked in, glancing around the room.
Emily snapped her head up, gathering her purse and phone and standing up.
"Are you ready?" the nurse asked. Emily's thoughts whirled again, but quickly they were pushed away, her heart telling her that her decision was right. She couldn't just let her friend, her family, continue to suffer. She finally had to let her go. Slowly, Emily nodded.
"Come with me, dear." Said the nurse, turning and strolling down a hallway. Emily followed, gazing at the naturesque paintings that hung on the walls. Finally, they stopped at the end of the corridor, in front of a simple door. The nurse reached out and opened it and the two of them walked in. Emily glanced around the familiar room, her eyes landing on Scarlet, lying in the bed, tube in her mouth and wires in her arms. Immediately, Emily's eyes watered.
'She already looks like she's dead.' Emily thought to herself.
"Look's like we're all ready then, I take it?" asked a voice from the door. Emily spun towards it, spying the doctor.
Emily nodded, "Yes," she whispered, "It's… it's not right to let her continue like this. I can't bear to watch it anymore."
The doctor nodded, reaching out and grabbing the clipboard from the nurse, "Just going over the formalities here. Are you her only family? Her sister…?"
She shook her head, "No, I'm her friend, but we're basically family. We pretty much grew up together. Then we were roommates in college, her mother passed away a little while after highschool and I cut contact with my adoptive parents around the same time, so it's been just us since. We were about to move in together, before all of this."
The doctor flipped through the pages, "Court records state that she already has a will, and that everything is going to you and her affairs are your responsibility, and that you are requesting we begin withdrawing nutritional support and ventilation today?"
"Yes, I am. When her mother died she hadn't written a will, so not everything went to Scarlet, some things had to be liquidated by the state. So she made sure she had her own will ready, just in case if… well, if something were to have happened to her."
He nodded, handing the clipboard back to the nurse, "Of course. Shall we begin?" he asked, walking over to the machine that was keeping Scarlet alive.
Emily stepped forwards, "Wait." The doctor paused, turning to look at her in confusion. Emily stuttered, "I-I just," carefully she reached into her purse, pulling out a small rectangular device, "She really loved music, and I would just like five more minutes alone with her, just to play one of her favorite songs. She should listen to one more song before she leaves."
The doctor smiled and nodded, heading back towards the door with the nurse, "Of course. That sounds like a wonderful idea. We'll be back in five minutes."
Emily sighed as they left, walking over to a chair and sat down in it. She pulled out a portable speaker and a cord and attached them to the red MP3 player, then turned them both on. The company logo lit up underneath the cracked screen, ready to be used for the last time. Emily navigated through it, finding the perfect song, and pressed play, letting the tears finally fall as the violins and cellos began to ring through the speaker.

I panted as I rushed through the catacombs, down stairwells and dodging boobytraps. I could hear Erik's voice echoing through the tunnels as I made my way, cold air flying through my hair and my dress billowing around my legs.
Finally I had reached the entrance to his home and shoved the mirror aside, striding into the room, heart pounding. Immediately I spied Erik, who was gazing down at the ring in his fingers, looking at it with eyebrows furrowed.
"Erik!" I called to him. He spun around at the sound of my voice, gazing at me with eyes wide. He blinked, shaking his head as he looked me up and down.
"Scarlet?" he whispered, "You...You're alright? But-But the chandelier!" he strode over to me, grasping me in a tight hug, "The officer- he shot the rope and I knew the chandelier would fall, and you were-" he pulled away, looking worriedly into my face as he brushed a strand of hair from my eyes, "I thought I'd lost you."
I smiled, shaking my head, "I'm fine, Erik. I got away before it crashed."
"Oh, Scarlet, if I had known that you were going to be right there, I never would have… I-"
"It's ok, Erik, I…" I trailed off, looking around us, "W-Where is Christine?" I asked.
Erik smiled slightly, grabbing my hands, "She's getting ready. Soon it'll just be the three of us, Christine, you and I. If you want to come with us, that is."
I stared at him, searching his face. His eyes were full of hope, but the rest of his face screamed in worry and fear, eyebrows furrowed and his breath shaking, yet his timid smile did not falter. He held onto my hands, gripping them tightly in his, and it broke my heart to rip myself away from him.
I shook my head, feeling tears well up in my eyes, "You know perfectly well that Christine does not want this, Erik."
His smile finally fell, "Please don't say that, Scarlet," He said, deadpan, "You know how hard I've worked for this moment, I've come too far-"
"Erik, you have to let her go-"
He stood up straight, "Stop it-"
"Please Erik-" but the both of us were cut off when the sound of bare feet on stone reached our ears, the two of us spinning towards Christine as she stomped into the room, glaring daggers at Erik.
"Have you gorged yourself at last in your lust for blood!?" she yelled at him. Erik blinked at her, taking in her beauty as she stood before us, yet I couldn't help but notice how he shrunk slightly at the way she yelled at him.
She rushed to us, curling brown hair flying, "Am I now to be prey to your lust for flesh?"
Erik eyed her, "That fate which condemns me to wallow in blood," he walked towards her, reaching out timidly to touch her face, "Has also denied me the joys of the flesh." Christine pulled away and Erik's hand fell, his face falling at how she recoiled from him.
"This face, the infection," he continued, gesturing to himself, "Which poisons our love."
Christine turned back to him, looking at him in confusion. Then she looked towards me and pursed her lips, looking at me in disappointment. I shook my head and bit my lip, wanting to tell Christine that I did not want this for her, and to tell Erik that he was not what he thought he was. To rush to him and yell at him that he wasn't a monster at that he was being ridiculous and stupid. But instead I stood there, helplessly. Now knowing that no matter what I did, I would never change a thing. Nothing had changed. Everything happened the way it was supposed to, no matter how hard I tried. Someone still died in Il Muto. The Chandelier still fell. The Opera Populair was still lit aflame. And Erik will never stop seeing himself as the monster. But still, I would not give up without a fight. Not until the very end.
"Strange Sight," I whispered, looking to him, "You stand in the light. You want to be right, and my heart is beating wildly."
"This face," he continued, paying me no mind, walking away from her and towards the wax figure of Christine, "Which earned," he reached out and carefully removed the veil from it's head, "A mother's fear and loathing," he gazing at it, lip quivering as he smoothed the tulle, turning back to Christine, "A mask, my first unfeeling scrap of clothing."
I walked closer to them, "Strange, how I was scared but delighted, afraid but excited too."
He reached out to her, slamming the veil on her head and whirled her around, "Pity comes too late! Turn around and face your fate! An eternity of this!" he shouted, voice warbling, "Before your eyes." He reached out, taking her hand in his and placed the ring in it, then closed her hand around it.
"You had a cold heart, you were reckless and distant, but I was persistent. I will understand you."
Christine stared at him for a second, the silence ringing around us. Slowly she removed the veil, dropping it to the side as she walked past him, "This haunted face," she called as she reached a covered mirror, pulling the velvet aside, "Holds no horror for me now." she looked back at him, shaking her head, "It's in your soul that the true distortion lies."
"Strange, how I was drawn to the danger. I reach out my hands to you."
The sounds of splashing caught Erik's and my attention, the two of us whirling to the closed gate as Raoul rushed up to it, soaking wet and gazing at Christine in worry and panic.
"Wait, I think, my dears, we have a guest!" Erik called, gesturing to Raoul.
"Raoul!" Christine called, rushing over to the edge of the shore.
Erik strolled over, "Sir, this is indeed, an unparalleled delight! I had rather hoped that you would come! And now, my wish comes true! You have truly made my night!" Erik grinned, reaching out and snaking his arm around Christine, pulling her to his side. She gasped, struggling in his grip.
"Let me go!" she whimpered.
I rushed forwards, "Erik, please!"
Raoul reached through the gate, reaching for Christine, "Free her!" he cried, "Do what you want, only free her! Have you no pity?"
Erik grinned, turning to Christine, "Your lover makes a passionate plea."
"Please Raoul, it's useless." Christine sang, shaking her head at him.
I reached out to Erik, "Please Erik, stop this." He turned away from all of us, shaking his head and rubbing his temple.
"I love her! Does that mean nothing? I love her! So some compassion!"
Erik whirled at him, mouth open and ready to fire his retort. But he stopped, blinking, eyebrows furrowed and stared off into the distance.
I stepped forwards, words coming to me and I couldn't hold them back, "You were a strange sight, some new kind of wonder-"
"Christine, Christine, let me see her!" Raoul called to him.
"With good hidden under, I'm sure that it's true!"
"Be my guest!" Erik responded to Raoul, walking to the lever that controlled the gate and pulling it, "Sir."
"Strange how your dark didn't phase me, no I won't give up on you."
The gate creaked as it rose from the water, Raoul gazing around as he walked into the cavern, Erik strolling into the water to meet him.
"Monsieur, I bid you welcome." he sang, smirking and holding his arms aloft, "Did you think that I would harm her? Why would I make her pay for the sins which are yours!"
Raoul glanced away from him for just a second, and that was all it took. With a whirl the lasso was over his head and wrapped around Raoul's neck. Christine gasped and I watched in horror as Erik shoved Raoul against the grate with a thud.
"Order your fine horses now!" he shouted, tying his chest and arms, "Raise up your hand to the level of your eyes! Nothing can save you now except perhaps Christine!" He pulled away from Raoul, walking back to the shore and stopped in front of her, "Start a new life with me!"
I shook my head, "If you're caught in the shadows and turned around-"
"Buy his freedom with your love!"
"Lost in the darkness, you will be found!"
Erik pointed back at Raoul, "Refuse me and you send your lover to his death!"
"If you hear my voice, follow the sound!"
"This is the choice!"
"Cause I'm here to guide you home!"
"This is the point of no return!"
Our voices echoed around the cavern, Christine stuck in the middle of it all. She stared at Erik in horror, and I felt my heart shatter at the sight of it.
"The tears I might have shed at your dark fate grow cold and turn to tears of hate!" she screamed, hot and angry tears falling down her face. Erik shook his head, turning away from us and towards the rope that kept hold of Raoul's fate.
"Christine forgive me, please forgive me," he whimpered, "Did it all for you and all for nothing!"
"Farewell my fallen idol and false friend!"
"Do you long to be left all alone?" I called to Erik, hoping that he would listen to me.
"We had such hope and now those hopes are shattered!" Christine sang.
"Too late for turning back! Too late for prayers and useless pity!"
"Say you love him," Raoul cried, "And my life is over!"
"All hope and cries for help!" Erik mocked.
"Set apart with a heart made of stone?"
"No point in fighting!"
"For either way you chose he has to win!" cried Raoul.
"For either way you chose you can not win!" Erik dueted, the both of them looking over at her.
"So do you end your days with me? Or do you send him to his grave?" he shouted, yanking on the noose.
Raoul quickly recovered, turning to look at Erik, "Why make her lie to you to save me?" Erik growled, yanking on it again.
"Angel of music." Christine pleaded.
I trembled, "There's a light that you shine!" I exclaimed.
"Past the point of no return."
"For pity's sake, Christine, say no!" Raoul shouted.
"Who deserves this?" she pleaded.
"There's a love!"
"The final threshold!"
"Don't throw your life away for my sake!" Raoul shook, his voice trembling as fat tears fell down his face.
"Why do you curse mercy?"
"I see it in your eyes!"
"His life is now the prize which you must earn!"
"I fought so hard to free you."
"All the dark, let it go!"
"You've passed the point of no return."
"You're not alone!"
"You deceived me!" Christine screamed, and all of us fell quiet. I turned to look at her, shocked by the hurt that fell from her lips. Erik's eyes were wide as he stared at her, his grip on the rope slipping for a second, "I gave you my mind blindly." Christine whispered. I stared at Erik, and for a second his gaze drifted over to me.
"Erik." I whispered, stepping forwards, "Please."
For a second he was silent as he stared at me. But then he glared, turning back to Christine, his hands balled into fists.
"You try my patience," he growled, "Now, make your choice."
I sighed, tears falling as I stepped aside, knowing what was coming next and not wanting a single part of it while Christine looked over at Raoul. She smiled at him, her eyes telling him that everything will be alright while he stared at her in fear and worry. She gulped, and turned back to the Phantom.
"Pitiful creature of darkness." she started, slowly wading into the water and making her way to him, her choice finally made, "What kind of life have you known?" I could not help but look up at them, gripping the edge of a curtain that hung by me as the space between them grew shorter and shorter with each step.
"God gave me courage to show you," Christine slipped the ring on her finger as she reached him, her hands then reaching up and slowly grasping his face and pulling him close, "You are not alone!"
My heart shattered as their lips made contact, Christine grasping onto him tightly as I watched in horror. Erik's hands shook as they hovered over her, his eyes closed. Tears fell down my face as I watched, wanting to turn away, yet I could not bring myself to do so.
Christine pulled away, looking up at him with wonder in her eyes as she searched his, then leaned in once more for the second kiss.
Erik almost fell into the water as he stumbled away, shaking his head slowly, eyes as wide as saucers. I stared at them, confused at his sudden and out of character movement.
"Oh." he gasped as he stared at Christine, panting. Her eyebrows furrowed as she searched his face in bewilderment, glancing from him to Raoul nervously. Erik's breaths were shaky and ragged as he stared at her. Then Erik's gaze turned to me.
I held my breath as our eyes met, and it seemed like everything else melted away. His gaze never left mine as he began to splash his way past Christine, practically running up the shore and onto the rock. My heart hammered in my chest, and I was sure that he could hear it as the space between us closed and I could feel the warmth radiating off of him. His eyes welled up with tears, a hint of a smile on his face. Gently he reached out to me, cupping my face in his hands.
"It's you." he whispered to me, "It's always been you, and I've just been too blind to see it, to see you. My Scarlet Rose."
My lip trembled, "And you, my masked Phantom." A tear fell as I grasped his shirt, holding on as tight as I could as our lips met, his green eyes fluttering and my body shaking as I pressed myself against him. I could feel the stubble on his chin and strands of his blond hair tickled my face. Our mouths seemed to melt together as we kissed, neither of us taking a single breath. His hand moved to the back of my neck, slowly reaching up into my hair and making me shiver. It seemed to last for a lifetime, and yet, it didn't last long enough.
When we pulled away I was shocked to see tears falling down his face as he began to cry. He shook his head, grasping one of my hands tightly to him as he shook.
"I was a fool!" he choked, "A fool, Scarlet!"
I reached up with my free hand, fingers grazing his cheek, "Hey, hey, it's alright-"
"You were right. This whole time you were right, and I was too much of a fool to listen."
"Hey, stop that." I said, "Everything is going to be alright. I'm here, Erik."
His breathing slowed and he nodded, then pulled away to face Christine and Raoul.
"Take her, forget us, forget all of this," he called to them. Immediately Christine rushed to Raoul, shoving the noose away from him and untying his arms, "Leave us alone, forget all you've seen. Go now, don't let them find you!" Echoes of the crowd that was heading our way began to echo around us, drawing louder and louder as they neared. Christine and Raoul grasped onto each other as he was freed, "Take the boat, swear to us never to tell. Of the secrets you know, of this angel in hell."
Erik grasped my hand in his and began to lead me to the back room, while Christine and Raoul stared up at us in confusion. Erik spun to them, "Go now!" he shouted, "Go now and leave us!"
The two of us stumbled into the room, and I watched him as he walked around the swan bed, grabbing random items and shoving them into a bag. Clothes, important papers, and food were all tossed in without a care as he readied us for the journey out of the catacombs and away from the burning Opera Populair. Looking to the side, I spotted the little monkey playing the cymbals sitting on a small stool. I smiled at it and gingerly picked it up. It seemed to whirl to life, the masquerade song tinkling as the monkey clashed it's cymbals.
"Erik," I panted, breathless, "What made you change your mind?" I asked him, placing the music box back down onto it's seat.
He looked up at me, "What?"
"What made you give up Christine?"
He tossed the bag over his shoulder and stood in front of me, smiling and caressing my face, "It was you," he replied, "When Christine kissed me, the only person I could think of was you. You, the snarky, fun, beautiful, accident prone musician. I think I fell in love with you a long time ago. I was just too stubborn to realize it. And there I was, trying to win over the girl who I no longer loved, and who would never love me back. I was kissing her, and not you. And that's when I realized I was making the biggest mistake of my life."
I smiled, my nose scrunching as I leaned up to kiss him again, "I knew I'd get to you. One way or another." he smiled back, our lips meeting once more.
When we pulled away, I was surprised to see Christine standing with us, staring at him with an emotion that I couldn't pinpoint. Erik bit his lip, then turned to her.
"Christine," he sang softly, "I'm sorry. I was being stupid... and irrational. I wasn't thinking about you or how you felt, and I am truly sorry. I beg for your forgiveness, Christine."
She tilted her head, biting her lip as she stared up at him in deep thought. My gaze darted between the two as I held my breath, my hands twiddling at my side. Then slowly she nodded, holding out her arm.
"I forgive you… Erik." she said, then opened her hand. Inside it sat the ring, gleaming and sparkling in all of its glory. He stared at it for a second, seemed to be at a loss for words as it sat innocently in her hand. Then he reached out and closed her hand around it.
"Keep it," he told her, patting her hand, "You two deserve each other, and you deserve the ring that signifies that."
Christine grinning as she slipped it on her ring finger, "Thank you." her gaze landed onto me, "Scarlet," she said, eyes twinkling as she grasped me into a hug, "I guess this is goodbye, isn't it?" she asked me.
I nodded and sniffled, "Yes, I believe that would be correct," I pulled away, holding onto her shoulders, "But I'm sure it won't be for good. I'm sure we'll see each other again some day."
Christine nodded, "I hope so." and with that she was out the door. We followed her, watching from the top of the stairs as Raoul helped her into the boat.
"Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime…" they sang to each other. I turned to Erik, smiling as I wrapped my arms around his neck.
"Are you ready?" he asked me, "To leave this place?"
"Say the word and I will follow you…"
I shrugged, "This has been my home for so long. This place will always be in my heart, and I know it's going to hurt to go, to leave everyone I know behind," I smiled, "But with you, I know that everything will be fine."
His eyes gleamed as he wrapped his hands around me, "I feel the exact same way," he whispered, our lips meeting once more.
"Share each day with me, each night, each morning…"
We pulled away from each other, "You alone can make my song take flight!" we sang, holding hands as we rushed down the stairs and towards the fake mirrors, "It starts now, the music of the night!"
Erik picked up an empty candelabra, pushing me away a little as he swung at the mirror, glass shattering all over the floor at our feet. Dropping the candelabra he turned back to me, holding out his hand with a kind smile. I grinned and took it, his hand flooding mine with warmth as he led me into the hidden cavern, the curtain dropping behind us and covering our escape.
Stone crunched underneath our feet as we walked, the tunnel leading straight to a hidden opening a couple of blocks away from the Opera House. The trip was silent as we trekked along, holding each other's hand as we continued in the dark, the voices from behind us fading away into nothing. / But as we walked, I noticed that soft music had slowly begun, hearing cellos and violins begin to play.
I turned back to look behind me as the sound of string instruments grew louder, a soft tinkling of a piano ringing around us, "Do you hear that?" I whispered.
Erik shook his head, turning back to me, "You mean the angry mob that's coming after me? Yes I can hear them. We have to keep moving."
"Fare thee well…"
Now that was different and not at all a mob, but instead a single person, singing as if they were right next to me. I yanked my hand from Erik's grip, turning to gaze back down the cavern, "I swear I just heard something." I said, my eyes darting through the darkness.
Erik turned to me nervously, "Scarlet-"
"My own true love…"
"There! Listen!" I whispered and Erik went quiet. I knew that voice, I was sure that I had heard it before. It sounded familiar, her words feeling close to my heart, yet I could not pinpoint how I knew it.
"Farewell for a while…"
Erik walked up next to me, gazing into the darkness, "Wait, I hear it too." he said in a hushed tone, glaring straight ahead.
"I'm going away…"
"W-Where is it coming from?" I whispered, turning to look at him.
All of a sudden, it felt like my heart was being squeezed through my chest and as if someone had just stolen the air from my lungs. I gasped, wheezing as I clutched my chest and grabbed onto Erik with my other arm, feeling my legs collapse under me as I tried to hold onto him.
"But I'll be back…"
"Scarlet!" I heard him shout. He dropped to the stone floor, holding onto me as my mouth gaped open and closed, trying desperately to suck in air. My ears were ringing so furiously I could barely hear him. But the voice that was singing still rang loud and clear.
"Though I go ten thousand miles…" Her voice reverberated throughout me, through my blood and my bones. I could barely see Erik, my vision warping as he brushed my hair from my face.
"What's going on?!" he shouted, shaking me, "Scarlet?! Breathe, Scarlet!"
"Ten thousand miles…"
I could feel myself growing numb, the panic inside me calming slightly. Stars danced in my vision, my world beginning to turn black.
"My own true love…"
I stared up at him and I couldn't help but smile.
"Ten thousand miles or more…"
I slowly reached up with a trembling hand, holding his scarred and deformed face in my hand as I stared into his eyes.
"The rocks may melt…"
"S-Scarlet?" he sobbed, holding the hand that caressed his cheek with his own, tears falling from his eyes.
"And the seas may burn…"
The world around me grew darker and darker, my hand slipping and falling to my side, lungs burning and heart pounding as my world swirled into black, Erik's voice growing distant, and then growing silent.
"If I should not return…"
My eyes snapped open, bright white light blinding me as I shot up from where I lay.
"Oh don't you see…" the voice continued.
There was screaming to the right of me, but I could barely focus on it as I choked and sputtered. There was something stuck in my throat and my arms were covered in wires and tubes as I reached up, attempting to yank it out. Tears streamed down my face as I gagged, coughing as I slowly pulled it out.
"That lonesome dove..."
"Ma'am!" Someone shouted at me, but it sounded far away and distant as I threw the tube to the side.
"Sitting on an Ivy tree…"
"Erik!" I tried to scream, looking around me. My voice was hoarse and scratchy, as if I was just speaking for the first time. Everything was blurry as I looked around for him, but I could barely see, it was so bright, and there were so many different people.
"She's weeping for her own true love…"
"Erik! Where's Erik?!" I moved to get up off of the bed, but someone pushed me back.
"Ma'am, you need to calm down!"
"What's going on!?" someone else shouted, "What's happening to her!?"
"You need to leave! Someone get her out of here! Now!"
"As I shall weep for mine…"
I cried out, pushing against the person who held me back, "Get away from me!" I tried to shout as I fought against them, "I need to find him! Erik!" I sobbed, my gaze darting around for any sign of him.
"Oh come ye back..."
"Someone sedate her! Quick!"
"My own true love…"
I screamed, thrashing, "No! Leave me alone! ERIK!"
"And stay a while with me…"
"But sir!-"
"Do it now!"
"If I had a friend all on this earth…"
Immediately there was a rush of people as I was pinned down. I screamed and kicked, trying to do anything to get away and find Erik waiting for me in the catacombs behind the broken mirror.
"You've been a friend to me…"
"Hurry!" someone shouted as I yelled and cried, attempting to throw them all off me. There was a sudden pin prick at my thigh and I cried out at the feeling of it, my eyes wide as I stared at the ceiling. I was puzzled at the sight of it. There was no brass chandelier or candles that hung above me, instead there was a simple, glass electric light that sat there against the white paint.
My eyebrows furrowed, 'But electricity doesn't exist yet…' I thought. I could feel my heart beat slow as the weight on top of me lifted, my limbs going numb and my vision quickly growing dark once more, the music still ringing around me as I drifted off to a dreamless sleep.
Don't kill me XD
