The next day flowed like a river, quick and uncaring, Jaune wouldn't complain about the lack of excitement beyond telling his team his family was coming. Then getting an odd look when he said six of his sisters were also coming. Yeah, he had a big family, no need to look as if Jaune said he could eat and entire Gerbil. Classes were much the same except JPBY needed to catch up with a few things we missed, fighting terrorists didn't completely excuse them from schoolwork. More fast-paced lectures with Oobleck and more boring stories with Port.
That done it was finally time to have a normal day of training just for himself.
It felt nice for Jaune to get back to training, he typed in the combination to his rocket locker and it clicked open. Doing this all to prepare for a fight where he could die was one thing but now it was back to just building up his proficiency with one weapon in particular. It was a nice reprieve and with most of his family was coming tomorrow thing felt like they were simmering down for once. June thought Amber would have asked him an anxious amount of questions about his family. However, she wanted everything to be a surprise for her although Jaune felt like Amber would've got to mostly along with his mother. Especially with him asking Pyrrha out for the dance, that was Amber's idea and she had been weirdly persistent about it for a time. Ruby's kidnapping took everyone's attention.
"Think I should get Pyrrha a gift before the dance?" Jaune asked. "Missed our date and she had a reservation lined up." He knew getting one didn't cost her anything but it must have sucked to go planning this out only to disregard it.
"I think that would be nice, perhaps figure out what she likes before trying to order her anything."
"Yeah, we now need to order things from Vale. That is actually going to be expensive." Something like this already existed but was only used by people who had a lot of money or too lazy to care. It was typically less expensive to just get on the shuttle then go buy the item in Vale.
Jaune seized Rubens Vitae, Amber's staff, and a tool he'd been wanted to use more even since he got it. The large red dust crystal on one end was carefully removed as to not cut his hand on all the sharp edges. He placed the cracked and fading crystal almost half the size of a football and hefted the one Weiss gave him. She really did have a large stockpile and they were digging into it for supplies. The one Weiss gave him had far more smooth edges and looked like an enlarged dust crustal one would find in a stop. Immediately, he found a problem with the staff, pressing the crystal down it was finally forced down and into the top end. The wood was strong but pressure exerting on two sides was the only thing keeping the crystal attached.
"Have you ever had problems with them falling off or the pinching wood agitating the dust?" Jaune asked worriedly.
The newer ones fit on a lot harder than the old ones, they seemed as if they were carved to fit on. Amber was quick to ease his concerns.
"Never had a problem with the second-rate ones but maybe keep an eye on them."
"Alright, she had this for longer than me and it was her primary weapon." If it worked out fine for Amber then it would for Jaune
"What do you think of what we thought of with Ozpin and Ironwood? With my left arm being an opening we could pull you out of?" She never vocalized anything and he was getting worried Amber wasn't interested. "Do you... think we have a chance to get you back inside your old body?"
Amber let out a deep hum as she briefly mulled it over. "We'll see what those two can cook up, as the General said there is a chance they could grab the wrong soul. This could be dangerous..."
"I remember the promise I made." He planned to keep it too, no throwing himself into danger over no chance to help her.
Keywords no chance.
The locker room was both empty and fairly opened, so sound tends to carry easily in here. So a tip tap reached Jaune's ears he turned and saw nothing.
"Was it Neo?" He couldn't stop thinking about Roman's partner being able to constantly watch his activities.
"Hello? Someone there?" He called out to no response. "Do you hear that Amber?"
"Not really sure what you're referring to..." She didn't sound dismissive of him but clearly heard nothing.
There was a brief silence as Jaune peered around before shrugging. It was probably nothing. He fiddled with the wind dust crystal on the other end until it snapped on. He stood and cautiously made his way out of the locker room and to one of the training rooms.
As the staff classified as a ranged weapon it needed to be used in a room with targets and reinforced walls. The standard training room would end up with too many holes and scorch marks if they let anyone fire weapons there. There were plenty like inside the school, Beacon was a massive place and had plenty of room for areas like this. Jaune carefully aimed the staff towards one of the targets, just a simple red and white circles for use. There were no buttons or triggers for the crystals to active, it was all aura-based as dust is an element that can interact with it.
Jaune allowed a part of him to flow out, just enough to make the dust crystal glow red then shine and release the energy into a ball of fire. It wasn't as large as what Cinder we chucking at him before and it kinda disappointed Jaune. The ball of flame soared through the air and missed the target by several feel, scorching the wall with its heat.
"Dang it."
"I didn't make this with accuracy in mind," Amber said. "It's more a close-range weapon, if there was anything far off that's when my powers take the reins. You can use it as a regular flame thrower would, more spread means it will hit something "
The fire could be useful if Jaune lit his mind to it but the much smaller wind dust was here his true interests were. He flipped the staff around and found the larger fire crystal was being a pain in trying to control it. The extra weight from behind making any movements difficult as gravity tried to pull it down.
"The wind dust is supposed to be used while facing down. Flipping it around and trying to aim it like that is unnecessary." Amber said.
"Then how did you use the wind dust." Redirecting Cinder's fire attacks was his primary interest here and he'd kinda like it if it wasn't this hugely complex affair.
"It involves twirling it, um... Give me a moment, not sure how to describe this without any visuals." She muttered before falling silent.
This was fine. Jaune wasn't expecting to become an expert with this in one go. Having the chance to begin using it was a nice start here. Jaune stood there for a moment waiting for Amber when a thought entered his mind. There was something he didn't ask, so much was happening then but now he went for it.
"Hey Amber, if you don't mind me asking. What was your mother like?" He got a glimpse of who Rhea was and a bit curious for what more Amber would tell him.
"I don't mind at all, although there is not much I haven't said already." Amber sighed. "Obviously my mother was a paranoid woman. She was still loving, mainly strict about me going off on my own or interacting too much with anybody in general. It was all with for a good reason though."
They were being hunted, Jaune could understand Rhea's defensive moves even if he had his disagreements about them. It was the same with Ozpin, except they needed the headmaster's help to stop Cinder from hurting his team and the city. Still a good man if a bit shady.
"I'm sorry about what happened to you two." Jaune felt like this was something he should have been before, but there was so much going on then.
"Thank you... Sorry about keeping you in the dark for so long." Amber muttered.
"Don't worry about it." Jaune had felt anger towards Amber for keeping so much from him. He understood it though, didn't enjoy or even come close to liking any of i. He was not about to forget the trouble it cause him, but Jaune got why she acted the way she did. "You know we never did get that book you wanted, what was it called?"
"Moonlight, if you can get it now that would be amazing." She said happily.
"Moonlight, alright I'll see what I can find later." That was just one maternal thing Jaune knew she wanted, there was something else she liked. "I figured you enjoy dancing a lot too from how insistent you were about doing so at Junior's club. Not to mention that place Yang took us before." He added.
"I can't feel that much here but it was nice moving like that. It reminded me of when my mother would take out to a town festival and we'd join in." Amber smiled as a wave of nostalgia came over her.
"My mother wanted every kid in the family to learn how to dance. I think she hoped it would help us attract someone and give her grandkids."
"Seriously?" Amber chuckled. "Can't wait to meet all of them tomorrow."
"Yay! You and my mother trying to plot Pyrrha and I's baby shower!" Jaune laughed, these two would enjoy one another too much for his comfort. "You made me ask her to a dance and you two are making such a big deal about it."
"You asked me how to make up for lying to Pyrrha and I did. Plus seeing actual ballroom dancing take place will be a nice change of pace from what I typically got when traveling."
"Maybe one day you'd get to join me in one."
She laughed, it was a sincere and vibrate sound, one that held genuine humor. "You just don't stop do you?"
He shrugged non-apologetic as he snapped the wind crystal into place. "Small chance or not there is a possibility and you'd never know the true outcome without taking it. Heck, that mindset what got me onto Beacon." Granted he did hit many bumps on the way but things worked out in the end.
"I can't wait to see what kind of family made you." Amber said.
Jaune felt glad she was eager to meet them even if he was a bit nervous, he loved his sisters but they didn't always get along. He only hoped things wouldn't get awkward or complicated...
"Actually, with mom here things will get awkwards." He sighed internally knowing what was coming tomorrow.
"So I was thinking I should get Pyrrha one of those hearts with the chocolates in it. Or is that too sappy?"
"I think... Look it cannot hurt to just ask her what she likes." Amber sighed. "Alright, now let us get back to showing you how to use this staff."
"Yes, let's."
"Hello? Someone there?" Jaune called out. "Do you hear that Amber?"
Subtly was never Pyrrha's strong suit, she hid behind one of the blocks of walls positioned in the middle of the locker room. She wanted to come and see if Jaune wanted to train together and instead found him talking more openly than before. He was alone so it made sense here. Pyrrha was telling the truth when she said tried to assure Blake that there was no trouble from this voice and she meant it. Didn't make this any less weird.
Especially when Jaune started talking about Amber telling him to ask Pyrrha to the dance.
"If this voice is a figment of his imagination then that just means a part of him does want to go with me." She rationalized meekly.
They were going to the dance it's not like marriage was going to happen immediately afterward. This Amber was something she had already accepted and was ready to live with if this relationship went anywhere. Blake was concerned and blowing it out of proportions like she once did, this voice was not influencing him.
"Even if it was it's not in a negative way." She thought happily. "He's even planning to get me a gift of his own accord, so Jaune does care about this."
There was no need to get worked up about this... Well, Blake was and Pyrrha had just heard a few things about this Amber and dancing. Would telling the girl be betraying Jaune in a way? She was spying on him but his family was coming tomorrow as the whole team knew. Blake could ask them a lot of questions about Jaune and his condition. She too was intrigued by the idea of meeting them and with the dancing coming up as well it was all happening so fast and
"Perhaps I should get him a gift before the dance as well." Pyrrha knew exactly what to get him.
