References:

Me and Rug have so many quotes and references and inside jokes, collected both from real life and from an onslaught of different fandoms over the years that now it seems as though half of our vocabulary is made up of them! XD Therefore, inevitably, many of them have worked their way into the story, both willingly and unwillingly. .

Here's your guide to what they were ..

Chapter 1 – "3:16"

Reference to John 3:16 .. I think. Also possibly a really vague reference to the 6:14 thing in Evan Almighty .. XD

Chapter 1 – "Such a small thing"

Reference to Boromir's "such a little thing".

Chapter 1 – "he probably would've killed everyone around him and then himself"

.. come on, y'all know what that was referencing. X'D

Chapter 4 – "a world of swirling calculations"

If you didn't read that to the tune of Pure Imagination .. I am ashamed.

Chapter 8 – "More rain is coming. Those flood shields won't be able to hold all of it back."

Argh, I cannot read this without hearing in my head: "Those floodgates won't hold forever, you know! We're dooooooooommmmed. Ohoh, you think you can back away from the truth?!" (Flushed Away) Hah!

Chapter 9 – ""Take out the trash, Josh. Oh yes, thanks Mom, I love the trash!"

Has the exact same essence as "Close the windows, Spencer, refill the liquid nitrogen, Spencer-" (Eureka) XD

Chapter 10 – "the sound of silence"

only the souuunnddd .. of silence ..

Chapter 10 – "They'd been each other's constant companions for almost 20 years"

"I have the utmost respect for your nerves. They've been my constant companions these twenty years." (Mr. Bennett – Pride and Prejudice)

Chapter 10 – "If he really wanted me that much, how could I refuse?"

Ehh .. this was indubitably Princess and the Pauper .. Preminger. Baha, no one say a word.

Chapter 10 – "Deathkiller"

What Dagur wanted to call Toothless in Defenders of Berk. Gotta get in those HTTYD references.

Chapter 10 – ""Ink" was at least as stupid a name as "Red"."

There was a riding school we went to once as kids (by "riding school", I mean a set of open-air iron stalls with a tin roof .. fancy, it was not), and one of the horses that lives there was a little black furry thing called Ink. He was cool. Apparently he was pretty naughty and hard to control. I always remembered him. I did not though, for the record, think his name was stupid. XD It was cool. Hence I used it. Hence its presence here.

(oh look, a reference inside a reference. That last line was from Santa Clause 2 .. for the life of me, I don't know why we quote those movies so much ..)

Chapter 12 – "Someone unfamiliar."

"Something unfamiliar .. something .. dangerous .." (Puss in Boots .. about Humpty. .)

Chapter 12 – "Your time .. starts .. now!"

Family Feud. XD

Chapter 12 – "He was about to ruin this man before the night was out."

*squints* I feel like this was a veiled reference to "I'm about to end this man's whole career" ..

Chapter 13 – "Come on, MAKE up your MIND, genius!"

"Make up your mind, Sydney, be .. a scientist, or a mommy .. you can't be both!" (Miss Parker – The Pretender)

Chapter 13 – "Will I? Hm? A clue .. no."

"A clue .. no." A favourite catchphrase of the Sheriff of Nottingham (Robin Hood BBC). A very favourite show!

Chapter 14 – "He found himself face to face with their friend the guard."

"Our friends .. the robots." Astro Boy 2009. Often quoted. Good times.

Chapter 15 – "You Can Take the Man Out of the Jungle .." (Title)

Reference to "You can take the boy out of the jungle .. but you can't take the jungle out of the boy." (The Jungle Book II – a favourite movie from when we were little, and one that still extracts strange and wonderful feelings of nostalgia upon re-acquaintance ..)

Chapter 15 – "Hey, kiddo."

Almost completely irrelevant, but I always hear Carter's "Hey, kiddo" in Richard Maxwell's voice (Adventures in Odyssey). Such a cool guy. Anyway.

Chapter 15 – "He was a time bomb."

"We're a time bomb." – Bruce Banner, The Avengers.

Chapter 16 – "Tea?"

A reference to my usual habit of falling back on tea to fill the void when nothing else seems appropriate at the time.

Chapter 16 – "It'll be safe there."

NOT at all a reference to Angelo's line in The Pretender: "Going home .. be safe there", but nevertheless .. hnn ..

Chapter 17 – "Deborah! Long time no see!"

Ha! Margery. Also known as Rosemary off When Calls the Heart. At least, that's what my mind tells me every time I think of her. Just can't shake the impression from my head. My brain merges the two characters into one ..

Chapter 17 – "But can I come and stay with you sometimes?"

"Only if you get to bed and go to sleep like the other kids!" .. pssht. Santa Clause 2. Not an intentional reference, but as per usual, Santa Clause slips in wherever it finds an opening. That .. sounded a lot creepier than intended.

Chapter 18 – "The Best of Enemies are the Loyalest Adversaries"

I was SO tempted to call this chapter "Falling Down on the Job", for slightly sadistic reasons that become obvious later on in the chapter, but I refrained. I resisted. It just seemed too mean! This chapter name, though wordy, seemed appropriate anyway, given the past history between Taylor and the Kap and Skye and Carter.

Chapter 19 – "Are you getting sentimental on me, Simon?"

Simon. Not sure if it was an intentional call-back to Johnny English 2, but .. it ended up being an unintentional one. I can't read "Simon" without hearing it in his high-pitched, croaky, lozenge-induced falsetto voice. Haaa .. I cri.

Chapter 19 – "Kensinge."

A mixture of the names of Tuffnut'sChicken and Singetail, two of our (mine and Ruggie's) best online buddies. Her first name is Heather, after yet another of our good friends! ("Kensinge" is pronounced Ken-zing)

Chapter 20 – "The bleeding was caused by a tear in the minor blood vessels connected to the wall of her abdomen."

Man, this internal bleeding stuff was hard. The medical field is nowhere near my area of expertise. Thankfully, I had a fair bit of help on the subject, especially from one buddy in particular.
BabyNightFury – Freya – THANK YOU.

Chapter 21 – "the muesli story"

Hehe. Internal reference to the scene in After the Occupation where Lucas was spending the night in the Infirmary and Elisabeth was looking after him in much the same way she looked after Skye in this book.

Chapter 21 – "Need some help, Paul?"

Baha. A reference to Paul Kirby off Jurassic Park 3. A reference to the whole movie really, but especially the Kirbys. For some inane reason, we were quoting them A LOT around the time I wrote this. Hehehe. X'D Funny.

Chapter 21 – "Knight's got a short fuse and a long memory."

Charlie. Knight. A reference to Charlie (the White Knight) off Syfy's Alice (2009). Also known as Taggart off Eureka. That man's voice and is forever etched into our memories. Along with his .. colloquialisms ..

Chapter 21 – "Noted."

Another Eureka reference – this time from Sheriff Carter. A very, very short line, and yet a very quotable one.

Chapter 21 – "You've thrown your lot in with them."

".. You're not a Viking. You're not my son." How To Train Your Dragon. Evidently I go through stages of wanting to reference every fandom that enters my head. This chapter was apparently it.

Chapter 23 – "Skye said the other one was white."

"Ohh, it's white. You never told me it was white." Ah, dear old Mr. Masrani. ;-; May he never be forgotten.

Chapter 23 – ".. but realising mid-thought that the answer was in the question."

"The answer .. is in the question! How are we going to do this, my dad thinks you're a toymaker in .. Ca-na-da .."

We really .. hnn, really .. quote Santa Clause too much. This one in particular was from Santa Clause 3.

Chapter 23 – "Nothing happened in the markets without everyone hearing about it."

"Nothing happens on this island without me hearing aboot et." Stoick the Vast (How To Train Your Dragon).

Chapter 23 – "But trust me, you couldn't hate me anymore than I hate myself."

.. such a stupid Vine to inject itself into such a serious moment. *laughs through the pain* "Just remember .. nobody can hate you more than you already hate yourseheellfff .."

Chapter 23 – ""Smile, Elisabeth .. the worst is yet to come."

A not-so-subtle reference to a particular song, which is tied to a particular favourite Primeval fanvid, not of our own making, but definitely of our own liking.

Chapter 24 – "And the Rain, Rain, Rain Came Down, Down, Down" (title)

At last, a reference of substance, a reference of culture .. a call-back to the Winnie-the-Pooh CDs of our youth.

Chapter 24 – "Mira looked as though she was about to spill someone's blood on the wooden floorboards."

Honestly, not a clue as to whether this was intentional or not, but it calls to mind a distant- yeh, there is is, I can hear it now .. first faint, but ever increasing in volume .. "You see his blood, it drained into the boards and we had to change 'em .." We all got a chicken-duck-woman thing waiting for us. Only a matter of time.

Sub-Reference: Those music notes ^ - the MHA: Vigilantes manga. I can't reference a song or even say something "in a sing-song voice" without thinking of Number 6's ever-present music notes.

Chapter 24 – "Can I go now?"

"Girls, girls, you're both pretty. Can I go home now?" Roxanne Ritchi, Megamind. Looking back on the References from After the Occupation .. evidently I haven't changed much in 2 years.

Chapter 24 – "you know, with this whole .. bridesmaids thing .."

She's the Man. XD

"I was just thinking maybe she could show me the ropes on this whole debutante thing .."

"OOOH, SO EXCITING"

Chapter 24 – "Herd the Pulmonoscorpius in that direction and let them be. Just stay out of the water."

Yeesh. A reference to a heinous night I spent on ARK (the video game), constantly being killed in water and on land by seemingly never-ending hordes of Scorpies .. would've taken two Spinos instead in a heartbeat ..

Chapter 25 – "The recreation area was through a rough archway to the left, and the kitchen was to the right."

The layout of the Barracks was actually based entirely on the Barracks in mine and Rug's Minecraft Terra Nova. We built a big wooden building on the opposite side of the Command Centre to the houses, inside the colony, set it all up with a kitchen and dorms and lounge so it was all nice and ready to be lived in. Hehe. But seriously, the security team have gotta live somewhere, Minecraft references aside.

Chapter 25 – "Come on, Reills."

To be fair, I didn't need a reason to add that in apart from the fact that Silas is an endearing annoying guy, but I can't help but hear it in MacGyver's voice – the new MacGyver, that is. The questionable Lucas Till version.

"Come on, Riles." "Riles" = What he calls Riley Davis, the tech support.

Chapter 25 – "Are there any spare doors we can use if we run out of boats?"

An incredibly vague reference to Titanic that probably should have been far more obvious if I didn't want to confuse the life out of the readers. But I thought it was funny.

Chapter 25 – "No fight was worth this."

Hahaa, another Eureka reference. Nathan Stark to Carl Carlson when the latter intentionally stabbed himself in the hand .. long story. "Carl, no job is worth this .."

Chapter 25 – "We've defeated the final boss, right?"

My Hero Academia. A reference to Shigaraki's frequent gaming metaphors.

Chapter 26 – "Then .. Aaron and Maureen .."

Aaron and Maureen. Also known as Maureen Robinson off Lost in Space (2018) and A-A-Ron.

Also, the name "Vaughn" was off the show Alias, as well as being the name of a really nice kid I had the pleasure of meeting, and so I stole his name. The ultimate form of flattery. Thanks, Vaughn. XD

Chapter 26 – "Aaron, Maureen, Paul, Edna .. Watkins, Hodge, Seth .."

"Little Moe with the gimpy leg .. Cheeks, Boney Bob, Cliff! I could go on forever, baby-"

(Home Alone 2)

Chapter 26 – "Malcolm held up a finger. ".. no." "

That Bugs Bunny "NO" meme. X'D

Chapter 27 – "Esteban might have been a little soft at times for a Phoenix soldier."

The name "Esteban" came from a variety of places. First and foremost, it was the name of the villain in a computer game we were more or less raised on – Horsez. Such a classic game.

Secondly, it was the name of the father of Alfred Molina, the man who not only played Doc Ock on Toby Maguire's Spider-Man 2 (hehe .. another classic ..), but also voiced Viggo Grimborn on Dragons: Race to the Edge, a favourite series. Now, how on earth I came to learn this, I do not remember .. but for some reason, it stuck. XD

Chapter 27 – "Yeah, I made it back. No thanks to you."

This entire interaction both quotes and carries the essence of Scamp talking to his father in the streets in Lady and the Tramp 2 .. to me, at least. Not sure why. It's weird. But if you've managed to read this far down without spontaneously giving the whole endeavour up, you're probably likely to be a soul that's inclined to be generous in terms of the wispy connections of an overactive imagination, and for that, I thank you. Never change, you.

Chapter 27 – "Are we to be invaded by every little girl in the colony before the day's out?!"

"Are we to be invaded by every Bennett in the country?!" – Pride and Prejudice

Bahaha, are you serious, I referenced that exact line again? X'D Check the After the Occupation References page. You'll find it there as well. Evidently it wasn't an obvious enough reference, however, because I felt the need to include it again. There are some things that seemingly never leave your brain .. they just make loops and resurface periodically .. like comets ..

Chapter 27 – "Miss Alice is looking for you."

Ahh, Miss Alice (from the 1994 Christy series). Goodness knows, if Miss Alice is looking for you, you best git on your pony and hurdy-gurdy outta town quick-like, cause there ain't no escapin' that woman's all-seein' eye .. o.o

Chapter 28 – "Elisabeth, Boylan?!"

Haa .. Step Up 3. I am so sorry.
"Camille, Kristen?!"

Chapter 28 – "A little bit of Sandra in the sun, a little bit of Mary all night long-"

That song .. that heinous song ..

Chapter 28 – "Not much has changed, actually .."

Gobber. How To Train Your Dragon.

Chapter 29 – "every single one of them"

A common enough phrase, to be sure, but I can't read it without hearing it in Anakin's voice. "And I slaughtered them .. every single one of them." Specifically, in schmoyoho's Sand parody video .. for better or for worse.

Chapter 30 – "You have more sense than most of these military robots."

"You sound like some military robot, Frank!" .. Yours, Mine & Ours (2005). Yet another thing I can't believe managed to work its way in here.

Chapter 32 – "Peace Sign"

Reference to the best My Hero Academia intro song. Peace Sign. Japanese is hard, but epic.

Chapter 32 – "beads of sweat breaking out on his caramel forehead"

Here's your friendly reminder that Bakugo's (My Hero Academia) nitroglycerin sweat probably smells sweet. You're welcome, I guess.

Chapter 32 – "No attacks tonight. Go to sleep."

Gobber off How To Train Your Dragon .. again. Believe it or not, he's not my favourite character.

Just making up for the lack of HTTYD references in the last book .. he .. hehe .. yeh.

Chapter 32 – "the overnight rain seeming to have brought a new freshness to the world and washed it clean again"

A reference to a verrrryyy vague memory in my head of a quote from the Famous Five 1995 series about the new morning feeling as fresh as though it had just come out clean from the laundry .. the things that stick with you ..

Chapter 32 – "Curran finally broke the silence, pulling his legs up and crossing them like a happy child."

A reference to Terra Nova, believe it or not! Haha, or the behind-the-scenes of it anyway. Inspired by an interview with Rod Hallett in which he did a very similar thing.

Chapter 33 – "Go on, get out of here."

"Go home." Reference to Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Little Creek specifically.

Chapter 34 – "They were getting along just fine. And I was watching them!"

Eep. The Croods. "I .. was watching, I was fine!" .. don't ask me why. I don't want to talk about it.

Chapter 35 – "He's .. He's barely 60."

"He's .. He's 14." Marty Wolf, Big Fat Liar.

Chapter 35 – "Hendrick." Kensinge muttered. "One of our men."

Reference to Henrik van der Hune, a character off Nancy Drew: Secret of the Scarlet Hand, and a character that me and Ruggie had a hilariously annoying time with, I might add. What an annoying guy. X'D

Chapter 37 – "Something was not right here."

Lucas channelling his inner Miss Clavel (Madeline).

Chapter 38 – "Might be cute if it wasn't so pathetic."

Johnny English. Also known as "if it wasn't so pabthleblic".

Chapter 38 – "You turn up, three days before my daughter's wedding-"

Believe it or not, I've actually never seen The Godfather. This is a reference to the reference off Zootopia. X'D

Chapter 39 – "I'm not your son."

"Son." "Don't call me son." Such a generic line, of course, but always reminds me of Washington and Hamilton.

Chapter 40 – "I was under the impression that he brought himself."

"Who sent you?" "I sent myself." – Timeless, Garcia Flynn. (aka, the best character in the whole show)

Chapter 42 – "Your Aunt Mala had an agenda."

Mala. You know the series of code words that turn Bucky Barnes into the Winter Soldier? .. that's what "Mala" is like for me. I'm joking. I'm only half joking. The name of a particularly unlikeable character off Race to the Edge, the mere mention of the word Mala flings a cacophony of images into my brain, one after another. Gif wars, Loki Days, ships which started out as crackships and then somewhere along the line became .. real ones .. "Mala" represents a dubious history of both wonderful and mildly disturbing events .. but what a ride it has been.

Also, I really, really hope "Malaikah" wasn't some sort of subconscious reference to Code Black (Malaya) .. I should know, shouldn't I? If anyone should know, I should. But I disremember. Moving on.

Chapter 42 – "Where's that gangly teenager who used to keep me up at night telling me all about his projects?"

I can't read the word "projects" without hearing "Good luck with your projects!". Man, I watched so many of those Weaver Leathercraft videos when I was sick that one time. There's something so comforting and homey about them .. anyway.

Chapter 42 – "What, is she going to turn into Bridezilla and bake us all into a wedding cake?"

Throwback to that one time Cruella de Vil got baked into a giant cake .. (102 Dalmatians)

Y'know, that's the first movie I ever remember seeing in the cinema! .. another irrelevant reflection for you.

Chapter 43 – "I saw it and thought of you."

Megamind. XD Couldn't end the book without a final Megamind reference.

Chapter 44 – "How can you be sure?"

More accurately, "HoW cAN yoU Be sUrE?!" The little guy (Pat) off the Pretender episode Keys. More iconic than it has the right to be.

Chapter 44 – "autumn had dawned, and .. the gentle rustling of the trees had just begun to take on a faint crunchy note"

This has such Winnie-the-Pooh: Tigger's Honey Hunt vibes, I'm not even joking. That legendary game.

Chapter 44 – "the second-smartest person in Terra Nova"

A callback to the recurring joke on Get Smart ..

Chapter 44 – "- Property of the Guild of Scientists"

I forgot to mention that the Guild of Scientists was a reference to the Guild of Engineers in Mortal Engines. This bit in particular gave me such Mortal Engines vibes. Such a cool world, that .. if a little depressing. ;-;

Until next time .. adios!
