Chapter 48: A Life changing vacation?
Four years later
May 21, 2014
While their kids, 12 year old Faith, who will be 13 tomorrow, and 9, almost 10 year old, Even was asleep in their beds, Sara joined her husband in their Jacuzzi tub for a bubble bath, and after placing her back against his bare chest, he handed her glass of wine.
She took it from him and sipped it before she sighed in content as her head laid against his shoulder. "Thank you for this."
He turned his head to kiss her temple before whispering. "It's been a rough couple of days, we both could use this."
They just solved one of the most difficult cases in their careers, which was saying a lot, considering how many they've had since they became official CSIs.
She nodded in agreement, and after taking another sip, she spoke again. "And I am so thankful for the day off tomorrow. But you know what I could really use? A real vacation, a few days...No, a week out of town, with no phones, relaxing and spending time with my family."
As much as she loved, and was dedicated to her job, nothing beats spending time with her family. But admittedly, outside of a few special occasions, like visiting Billy when he was in Paris, and a few other times visiting family for births/weddings, they don't do many vacations, let alone trips outside of the state.
Grissom took a moment before he replied, feeling the same way. "Then why don't we do it."
"What?!"
He nodded with a smile. "Yeah, why don't we do more than just talk about it, let's get out of here for a week."
She paused for a second before smiling. "Ok, do you have a place in mind, Dr. Grissom?"
He started to smile as the idea came to him. "I do have a very special place in mind."
"Oh?"
He moved his lips to her ear and whispered it, causing her to smile a little wider with a blush, then she cleared her throat and asked. "And when are we planning on doing this?"
"I'm thinking around the 4th of July, so it would give us time to plan and you time to prepare the team."
"Ok, I'm all in."
He just nodded with a smile, happy his wife was on board, and also hoping their plan will come true, knowing that if there was another big case they would have to stay.
They stayed in the bath for about another 15 minutes, and while there was some more talk back and forth, it was mostly comfortable silence between one another, just enjoying each other's company when there wasn't much going on around them.
When they finally got out of the tub, they wrapped towels around their bodies before finishing up their nightly routine, then she took his hand and walked them in the room, but instead of walking them towards the dresser, she started walking them towards the bed, and after they stopped, she released his hand and cupped his cheek.
With the way she was looking at him, he knew what she wanted next, but because the day, well really, the last few weeks had been draining in every way imaginable he wanted to make sure, which was nothing new on his part, so with loving eyes, he asks softly. "You sure?"
She nodded while she spoke with emotion. "I just want my husband tonight."
Seeing the full truth and love in her eyes, he nodded. "Ok."
They both moved towards one another and started kissing, the passion between them growing more intense each second that passed as they moved closer to the bed. Eventually, she laid down so her back was against the mattress, and he wasn't that far behind being above her before kissing her again, wiping away every thought but their love as their night progressed.
When the next morning rolled around, and they woke up next to one another, they couldn't stop smiling while still having that loving feeling between one another, but knowing it was their daughter's birthday, and there was a traditional breakfast they usually do, they both agreed to a rain check and got up from the bed before changing into decent clothing and headed downstairs.
It didn't take them very long to smell a delicious sent in the air, so they quickened their pace through the living room, and just as they suspected while stepping in the doorway of the kitchen, they see their oldest at the stove.
A moment later, Billy, now aged 22, turned around and smiled at his parents. "Hey you guys, I hope you don't mind me cooking Faith breakfast this morning."
After spending 2 years and 6 months in Paris, which during that time he had a few family visits, he even came home for a few himself, he officially came back home, started working in the restaurant as just one of the cooks and lived with his parents for about 5 months before he moved in with a few friends of his until about a month ago.
Now, he lives alone and close to the restaurant, where he worked himself up to head chef.
They didn't disagree with his suggestion and kept looking at him like they were afraid they'll blink and he'll disappear, causing him to chuckle and shake his head. "Please stop looking at me like I'm going to disappear."
Sara and Grissom started walking towards the counter while Sara sighed. "Sorry honey, but it feels like it's been awhile since we've seen you."
Not only has the lab been slammed the last few weeks, but so has the restaurant, especially since he became the head chef.
Billy nodded with a sigh of his own. "I know, and I'm sorry about that, but it seems like the restaurant has been busier than ever before."
Grissom smirked, but with pride in his eyes. "I wonder why."
Billy shyly shook his head, and as he started to concentrate on his cooking, Sara and Grissom looked at one another, having one of their famous silent conversations, then after a raised eyebrow from Grissom, she nodded with a smile, so Grissom looked at their son again and asked. "Hey bud, do you have any plans for the 4th of July weekend?"
Billy looked at his father again and shook his head. "I haven't really had time to plan anything that far ahead, why?"
"Your mother and I are planning a vacation."
He understandably looked surprised. "Really?"
They chuckled before Sara replied with a had nod. "Yes, it was your father's idea."
That shocked him even more, causing them to chuckle again before Grissom continued after clearing his throat. "Anyway, we would like you to join us if you can, it's a family trip after all."
He paused for a second before he nodded with a smile. "Ok, I'll see if I can get the time off."
After they nodded, they finished getting their cup of coffee before they headed towards the table, where the paper was sitting, so they sat down and started doing the crossword puzzle as Billy continued on with cooking breakfast.
Eventually Faith and Even woke up, and they wished Faith a happy birthday as her older brother severed her breakfast, and since it was her birthday, it was her day to decide what she wanted to do, which was mostly spent with the family, but later that night she got to have a few friends over for a sleepover, so to say the birthday girl had a good day was an understatement.
2 Months later
July 1, 2014
Miami Florida
After arriving at the airport, the Grissom family got off the plane and headed for baggage claim, and just as they were picking up the last of their luggage, they hear a familiar man's voice. "Sara?"
The couple turns to the voice and smiled before Sara spoke to the family in surprise. "Scott? Kelly? And wow kids, what are you guys doing here?"
They all chuckled at how surprised she was before Scott smirked as the two old friends shared a hug. "If you stop being so shocked we could tell you."
They all chuckled again as Sara lightly hits his arm while they pull back, and while Kelly was greeting Sara, and Scott was greeting Grissom, he spoke again. "Thomas decided to stay in Florida for the 4th of July and we thought we would use that as an excuse to take time off work and finally go on a vacation in what seems like forever."
Thomas Holland, who was six months younger than Billy, was Scott and Kelly's oldest son, and wanting a different scenery, he left Boston to go to college in Florida, where he studied business.
Sara and Grissom nodded in understanding before Sara spoke. "That's right. How is he? It's been awhile."
Scott nodded with a smile before he looked next to Grissom and shook his head. "It sure has, and no way this is Billy."
Billy nodded with a smile. "Yes, Uncle Scott it's me, and you say that every time you see me."
They all chuckled once again as Scott and Billy shared a handshake. "I can't help it man. It's been what? Since your graduation party that I've seen you last?"
Billy nodded as they released hands. "That sounds about right."
Then Scott looked at the two younger 'kids', whom he hadn't seen in about two years, before looking at Sara. "It's been too dang long, Sara."
Sara looked at the three Holland 'kids', 18 year old Josh, who will be starting his Senior year of High school in the fall, 15 year old Bryce, who will be a Sophomore, and the only daughter, 12 year old Whitney will be in the 7th grade, then looked at Scott with a nod in agreement. "It certainly has."
They got their bags, and as they started walking towards the car rental area, Scott spoke again. "And we don't want to feel like we are intruding on your vacation, but if you're ok with it, how about..."
Sara cuts him off with a smile. "Spend some time on the beach then dinner later, sounds good."
Scott chuckled with a nod. "You're good."
Grissom smiled as he placed his hand on the small of her back. "That she is."
Anybody could have taken that in many different ways, which they did as there was another round of chuckling while Sara shook her head, trying not to feel embarrassed about her husband's comment
Once they checked into their hotel rooms (Sara and Grissom getting that special room), they all headed towards the beach, which once they got there, they were greeted by the Caine family that consisted of Calleigh, Horatio and their three kids, the oldest being a year older than Faith.
About fifteen minutes later everybody hears 'Mom, dad', so they turn around towards the voice and Scott and Kelly smile bright as they see their oldest walking up towards them, which they noticed he was walking up to them while holding hands with a girl, who had blond hair, a slightly above average build and about Sara's height, and they never seen her before. There was also another girl walking next to the blond one, and this one had brown hair, also slightly above average build and Sara's height.
Scott and Kelly share a look while the Holland siblings rushed to greet their older brother.
After the Holland family greeted one another, Thomas, although surprised to see them, greeted his aunt and uncle with smiles and handshakes, then looks at Billy. "Hey man, I see your back from Paris. How was it?"
Billy smiled with a nod. "Indescribable in the best possible way, but I am happy to be back home."
Sara and Grissom was elated to hear that, and Thomas just nodded, then greeted Faith and Even before he finally introduced his girlfriend, Holly, who also had blue eyes, to the families, and her 19 year old half sister sister, Juliet, which as Juliet's brown eyes and Billy's blue eyes connected, he couldn't help but feel something shift that he hadn't felt in a very long time.
Not that he has been single all this time, but no matter how much he tried, his other relationships never really had that special ingredient that made him feel this is who he 'belonged' to.
Billy mentally shook his head a moment later before he greeted the women as Thomas was introduced to the Caine family.
About 25 minutes later Juliet had moved away from the group, sat down and started drawing, and as much as Billy tried, he couldn't keep his eyes off of her, he tried moving his eyes away and looked at something else a few times so it wasn't obvious, but considering most of the people he was around were CSIs, he shouldn't have been surprised that someone did notice.
"Are you going to stand there all day and just look at her, go talk to her already."
Billy jumped at the sudden voice before he looked next to him to see his father with that smirk on his face, causing Billy to clear his throat and shake his head. "I don't know what..."
Grissom chuckled and shook his head. "You know exactly what I am talking about, son." Billy was going to deny it again, but Grissom continued as he placed his hand on his son's shoulder. "There are moments in life you shouldn't pass up, they could change everything, your future even."
He cleared his throat and asked. "And you think this is one of those moments?"
Grissom sighed as he removed his hand from his son. "I guess you're the only one that can determine that, but if any part of you is already feeling you'll regret missing it, then I wouldn't hesitate."
Billy nodded. "Right." He then cleared his throat again before asking. "Ok, but what do I say?"
Grissom chuckled again. "How about 'Hi', that's usually a good start."
Billy chuckled with a nod, saying 'right' again before he stated walking towards Juliet, and as he got near her, Grissom shook his head again with a smile and spoke softly as he watched his oldest. "It's almost like that boy hasn't dated before."
He then hear Sara's voice. "Everything flies out the window when it feels like a life changer." Grissom turned his head to look at Sara, and she smiled knowingly as she cupped his cheek. "You feel tongue-tied, your thoughts and feelings are all over the place, you fee like you're floating..."
Grissom cuts her off with love in his eyes. "And you have these butterflies in your stomach that don't seem to ever go away."
With love in her eyes, she whispers. "After all this time?"
He takes her hand and kisses it before whispering in return. "Always."
They smile at one another before he slipped his fingers through hers, and as they started walking along the shore, she asked. "So, what do you think?"
He sighed. "I just want our son to find a woman who makes him as happy as you make me."
Sara smiled as they stopped and she watched her son now sitting down next to Juliet. "Well, it seems like a promising start."
Grissom nodded with a smile before they continued on their walk, mostly in silence.
After the three families had their dinner together, Thomas excused himself, said goodbye to his family, but before he walked away, he smiled at Billy. "Hey Billy, you want to come? Holly told me that Juliet was asking about you."
Billy looked surprised with his heart racing as he asked. "Really?"
Which he tried to be as calm as possible as he asked that, but the older 'kids', and grown-ups could hear it in his tone just how excited he was, so the parents gave each other known looks as Thomas nodded with another smile. "Yeah, so what do you think?"
Billy looked at his parents next, and while he was 22 and beyond his parents permission to do anything, they were on a family vacation and he didn't want to feel like he was being disrespectful to them and their plans, but he had nothing to worry about because Sara spoke with a smile. "It's ok honey, you're on vacation too, go have fun."
Billy nodded as he stood up while Grissom add. "Just be responsible and safe."
Scott also told his son that as Billy said bye to the families before the two young men left the restaurant.
There was a moment of silence, thinking about how fast their young men are going up, before a few more conversations happened, then they decided to call it a night and they all left the restaurant.
When they made it back to the hotel the Grissom family, which the 'kids' had joined rooms, put on lounge clothes and all cuddled together in the bed in Sara and Grissom's room to watch a few movies together, just enjoying a family moment, despite them missing a big piece of it.
After Thomas parked the vehicle in front of the rented beach house, which there were a lot of cars and music was heard coming from the house, he smiled as he pulled the key out of the ignition. "Alright, it looks like the party has already started."
Billy cleared his throat and nodded. "Yeah, it sure does."
The tone in Billy's voice and the reaction while he was still looking at the house, caused Thomas to ask. "Please tell me this isn't your first non-parental party?"
Billy shook his head instantly. "Of course I've been to parties, but I would be lying if I said they were an every evening experience for me."
Thomas nodded, then he handed the other man the keys to his vehicle and said with understanding. "Hey, I get it, not a partier, so if this makes you uncomfortable, then you can leave, no harm no foul, and I'll get my vehicle from you tomorrow." Then he gave him a little smirk. "But, what will I tell Juliet if you don't walk in that house with me?"
Not even a second later after he said that, Billy moves his body so he could open the vehicle door, causing Thomas to chuckle as he moved to get out of the vehicle as well.
When they walked into the two story house, the music sounding louder inside, so Thomas spoke loudly, telling him where the bathroom and kitchen was, and after making sure he was good, Thomas walked away and started greeting his friends and girlfriend.
Billy took a breath, and while a part of him just wanted to turn around and walk out of the house, a larger part of him knew if he stayed he'll get to see Juliet again, and that's what was running through his head as he went in search for her.
She wasn't in the living room, or the kitchen, so he stepped out on the back deck, and even though he didn't see her out there either, he walked closer to the railing and just stood there looking out in the ocean.
A few minutes later two women, one with blond hair and another with black came up to him and started to flirt with him, and while he wasn't an expert at these certain social situations, he definitely had his father's charm so he couldn't help but smile and talk to them, then about 10 minutes later, he sees Juliet walking out on the back deck, their eyes connected for a moment before Juliet turned and walked back inside, causing his heart to race as he quickly excused himself from the two women he was talking to before rushing towards the door and into the house, then after seeing her taking a few steps upstairs, he weaved his way through the groups of people, speaking loudly. "Wait, Juliet!"
He finally catches up to her about halfway up the stairs and took her arm lightly, causing her to stop, then she turns to him before he gave her a smile and spoke loud enough for her to hear him. "I've been looking for you."
Still having a strange feeling from watching him talking to those girls, she couldn't help but have a sharp tone. "Yeah, I can see that." Before he could speak, she shook her head and continued. "Listen, I don't want to ruin your night, we are good, you saw me, now go have fun with whomever you want."
She started to walk up the stairs again and he continued, feeling confused on how she was acting. "Wait, I thought that...Thomas said that..."
That seemed to get her attention, so she turned back around and asked. "Thomas said what?"
Now Billy started to get a shy look on his face, which caused Juliet's wall that she had built up for so long crack a little. "Well, he said that you asked about me."
She then looked a little shocked. "He did what?"
"Yeah, he told me that Holly told him that you were asking about me, like you were expecting me to be here tonight." As Juliet stood there still in shock, that he was here to see her and that Thomas would do that, then Billy shook his head after clearing his throat. "Which I can clearly see now you didn't ask for me, I guess it's my turn to say have a good evening."
He started to turn around, and Juliet caught his arm before asking. "So, you really came here tonight to see me?"
Before he could speak, they were interrupted, which caused her hand to come off his arm, when two young adults walked between them as they were going upstairs, and she sighed before asking. "You want to go back outside?"
He immediately nodded before they headed back down the stairs and headed out on the deck again, where they walked towards the railing, looked out on the beach before he turned his head and spoke softly, his heart racing. "To answer your question, yes, the only reason I came here tonight, which I didn't even think there was going to be a party, was because I wanted to see you again."
Her demeanor softened immediately as she shyly smiled before looking over at him. "I wanted to see you again too, I just wasn't sure if you..." She trialed off and looked away, causing his heart to skip a beat or two, then before he could speak again, she cleared her throat and changed the subject. "So, is it true you went to Paris for two and a half years?"
Earlier that day they mostly talked about art and her interests, so she didn't really know much about him, but she was definitely curious.
Billy nodded with a smile. "Yeah, and it was probably the best time of my life that didn't involve my family."
"I can imagine, I mean it is Paris after all."
"You've been there?"
She sighed and shook her head. "No, but it is a dream of mine to go there one day."
"And if that dream ever becomes a reality, I would like to recommend a few restaurants."
After he was done, she smiled with an awe look on her face. "You seem to know your foods."
He chuckled, which only made her heart race before he replied. "Well, if I didn't then I wouldn't be doing my job correctly." Before she could ask, he finished. "I'm a chef, well to be exact, head chef."
She did believe him, but then she said her next words, almost challenging him, without even thinking. "A head chef huh? I might have to put your skills to the test one day then."
After a brief shy look between them, the next conversation started to flow, then the next, and next, and before they knew it, they were sitting out on the beach and the night sky had turned to light, amazed that they spent the whole night/morning talking and still felt there was more to talk/learn about one another.
