Chapter 47: Final Exams
Some time later...
"It's summer!" Mito cheered, the second year's first final exams were held on the beach.
"It's the beach!" Yoshino beamed.
"We're enjoying our youth!" the Polar Star Dormitory residents chorused.
"All right, gather round." Erina spoke into the loudspeaker. "We will now being our first term finals. For the finals, the second-years have been divided up between the ocean mountain and river courses. All of you will be taking your exams on the ocean course. I will be overseeing all three courses, so I've asked the instructors to audit each course. Instructor Suzuki, if you will."
"Suzuki?" Souma echoed.
"He's the new teacher who started at our school this spring." Mito explained.
"Hello, everyone." Nakiri Asahi took over. "I'm Instructor Suzuki. I usually teach first-years, so this is my first time meeting all of you. Nice to meet you."
"I hear he's super popular with the first-years." Yoshino supplied. "They say he's a great cook and his lessons are easy to understand."
"Now, the thing we're going to have you kids on the ocean course do is run the restaurants at these beach clubhouses." Asahi stated. "We're rented the restaurants along this beach. Starting today, for three days, you'll split up into groups of ten and run some restaurants."
"Restaurants?" Sakaki echoed. "But what about getting ingredients and prep time?"
"That's also included within those three days." Asahi answered. "If you spend too much time on that, you'll have less time to interact with your customers, do be careful. If you are unable to accomplish this, you will fail. In order to pass this exam by 7.00pm the day after tomorrow, you must earn a profit of three million yen."
"Silence!" Erina cut off all protests. "We're been allowed to use these spaces, of course we can't let their profits slide. We will bring shame upon Tōtsuki if we don't return a profit to them.""
"Yeah, but, Erina-cchi..." Yoshino whined.
"Come on now." Souma chided. "We've just gonna have to do this. Let's go ahead and give them that three million."
"It doesn't matter if we're on the beach." Hayama stated. "We can figure out the prep."
"Dealing with all the customers might be rough." Megumi pointed out.
"That won't be an issue." Kurokiba declared. "No matter how many customers, I'll cut them down."
"If we hit our quota, can we play on the beach?" Alice wondered.
"I'm sure glad we have the Elite Ten with us." Sakaki was relieved.
"This might be easy for the Elite Ten, but..." Yoshino complained.
"We've taken that into consideration, too." Erina assured. "The Elite Ten will be their own team of six."
"We get four less people than the other teams?" Megumi blinked.
"And the beach house you'll be using is that one." Erina pointed to the decrepit cottage in the corner.
"It's freaking deserted." Souma deathpanned.
At the Polar Star Dormitory stall...
"I need grilled squid!"
"I need two franks!"
"Coming right up." Mito was roped in as waitress.
"Ryōko, I need five curries, stat!" Yoshino barked out.
"But I just put those up." Sakaki blinked.
"That was for Table #3." Yoshino reminded. "This is for Table #7."
"Our plan to start operations early to draw in more of a crowd is working." Marui grinned at the grill.
"We're only serving the classics." Ibusaki agreed. "But we can be confident in our flavor."
"I wonder how Yukihira and the other members of the Elite Ten are doing." Mito pondered.
In the rundown cottage...
"We'll need to fix up this shop if we're going to get any customers." Megumi pointed out.
"Forget today and tomorrow." Hayama had an entire plan laid out. "We'll have to make our profit on the last day.
"We should split up into an ingredient-gathering team and a clean-up team." Takumi suggested.
"Coming through with this crappy wood!" Kurokiba was hurling out the rotten planks.
"Working hard?" Asahi mocked the panting Souma who had just pulled out a broken plank from the front walls. "One ramune, please." he pulled out of 100 yen coin.
"We're not open yet." Souma stated.
"Do your best out there." Asahi walked off.
The next day...
"We're still pretty busy." it was Sakaki's turn as waitress. "But not as busy as yesterday."
"Looks like we lost some customers to some shops that kicked into high gear today." Marui noted. "And some of the shops have pretty unique menus."
"I guess just making the classics came back to haunt us." Ibusaki admitted. "We need to think of something."
"I wonder what the other shops are doing." Yoshino mused.
"Guess we can check out the other places during our break." Mito guessed. "That place seems to be getting a lot of customers." she stepped out during her break. "A limited edition menu for 4000 yen? What the hell are they selling?"
"Hey, Nikumi." Souma called out, bringing back a pile of cookery. "The sun's gonna be brutal today, so make sure you get some rest in the shade."
"More importantly, how's the Elite Ten doing?" Mito asked.
"You wanna come take a look?" Souma offered.
In the rundown cottage...
"Damn it, Nakiri!" Hayama barked. "I was charging the battery for the electric drill and you unplugged it."
"Pipe down!" Alice retorted, her vacuum cleaner was shut down. "I needed the electricity too! There are only so many generators here."
"You're in the way, damn it!" Kurokiba roared at Takumi. "Quit lazing around, Aldini!"
"Quit making a fuss in such a small space." Takumi fired back. "You're making it hotter! Can't you work more quietly?"
"Talk about a bloodbath..." Mito muttered. "Like it couldn't get any worse."
"They're definitely at their wits' end." Souma chuckled.
"This isn't a laughing matter!" Mito roared. "You're already off in some corner of the beach. And the shop next to you is stealing all of you customers."
"Wow, business is definitely booming there." Souma gawked.
"Too bad for you, First Seat." Dakekanba Ken burst out in mocking laughter. "Sorry for stealing all the customers around here."
"I know him." Alice piped in. "These few months, you've been after Yukihira's First Seat. You keep doing Shokugeki over and over, but haven't won a single one yet. I don't know your name, though."
"Dakekanba!" Dakekanba barked. "I'm Dakekanba Ken! Tomorrow, you won't be able to look down on me any longer. If the Elite Ten members fail, the chances of other students entering the Elite Ten will go up. Obviously, that includes me. Anyway, keep on struggling."
"We already have a plan laid out." Hayama scoffed. "All that's left is to carry it out."
"Er..." Megumi stammered. "We forgot to order disposable chopsticks and cups and such..."
"Forgot to order them?" Hayama echoed.
"Who was in charge of that?" Takumi asked.
"It was the miss's job." Kurokiba replied.
"Wasn't me." Alice refuted.
"Which mean..." Souma trailed.
"Are they going to be all right?" Mito muttered as the worn-down beach-house descended into chaos.
That night...
"You sound tired." Ami spoke over the phone.
"Thanks, I think." Takumi muttered.
"How's your exams coming?" Ami asked.
"Relatively well, I'd like to say." Takumi responded. "We'll be very busy tomorrow."
"Good luck then." Ami replied.
"Luck?" Takumi mocked. "We don't need luck."
The next day...
"It's finally the last day." Mito noted.
"Let's do this!" Yoshino cheered. "Actually, where are Marui and Ibusaki?"
"Apparently, they thought of something and went to get tools for it." Sakaki answered. "They should be back any minute now."
In the renovated cottage...
"That takes care of the renovations." Alice remarked.
"All the prep-work is done for the food, too." Hayama nodded. "Let's open up shop."
On cue, Megumi opened the shop doors.
"You initial stations are as we discussed." Hayama reminded. "First, we're going to have you veterans raise hell in the kitchen."
"This looks like a fun kitchen." Souma grinned, he, Takumi and Kurokiba were sent out. "Let's do this."
On the beach...
"The last day of the final exams." Erina announced over the loudspeaker. "Make sure you achieve your three million yen goal."
"All the people that were lined up in front disappeared." one of Dakekanba's teammates noticed their stall-front was empty.
"It's not just our line." Dakekanba stepped out. "All the people disappeared from the beach?"
"This must mean..." Mito realized and hurried over to the Elite Ten's beach-house as a mouthwatering aroma whiffed from the renovated stall-front. Yukihira and the others are cooking live? And their menu is... yakisoba?
At the renovated cottage...
"We have takeout too!" Alice called. "The Elite Ten's Family Restaurant Special Yakisoba. You can't resist!"
"I need two packs!"
"I need five packs!"
"Do you have seats for a party of four?"
The orders started flooding in.
"Right this way." Megumi was completely in her element.
"Yakisoba?" Dakekanba was shocked. "How could they attract so many with such a boring dish?" what a fragrant aroma... he was caught in the aromatic wave.
It has a hint of tangy spice, but it's still super rich. Mito was immersed in the overwhelming aroma. 'm being drawn in.
That's no ordinary yakisoba. Dakekanba realized. What the hell's going on with it?
We cut the squid into bite-sized pieces and sauteed them I olive oil and squid ink. Kurokiba grinned. Once the flavors have fully melded together, we flambe them with some white wine.
Then we add some cabbage and onions for sweetness, and tomatoes for some tang. Takumi fried up the vegetables.
We boiled down a bunch of shrimp heads and shells. Alice giggled.
And our final secret ingredient... Souma held up a food syringe. We infused the shrimp's richness and unami from the olive oil. That's Hayama's special red olive oil. And then, we take that sucker and inject it right into the soft-boiled egg yolk.
"I see." Dakekanba gaped, the renewed aroma erupted from the broken-through egg yolks. "Because that soft-boiled egg is bursting everywhere, the aroma is being unleashed all over the beach, winning the crowd over. The chain reaction lured them all in."
"Mito, you came." Alice chirped. "Here's a serving on the house." she offered a box to Mito.
"Sorry, neighbor." Hayama told Dakekanba. "Looks like we stole your line, too."
"This is your doing, isn't it, Hayama Akira?" Dakekanba glared. "To think you were able to lure in that many people with just the aroma. So you got some customers, so what? You need three million yen. There's no way you can handle all the orders you'd need to reach that amount. No human beings could possibly manage that..."
"Do they really look like they can't handle it?" Hayama pointed to their diner trio at full throttle. "Here, it's on the house, since we took your customers." he offered Dakekanba a box.
I don't want to admit it, but I can't resist. Dakekanba swallowed. This flavor isn't just millionaire-class deliciousness! It's billion-class!
No, it's trillion class! Mito was instantly overpowered by the deliciousness.
"'Glad you like it', or something?" Hayama smirked.
"Hayama, the hell are you slacking off for?" Souma shouted. "All right, let's pick up the pace."
That evening...
"The final exams are now over." Erina signaled the end of the exams. "The Elite Ten team has passed." the payroll receipt of the Elite Ten stall showed an overall 3,532,700 yen profit.
"This is child's play when you have all of us together." Alice bragged.
"Though we were all fighting through most of it." Souma chuckled.
"We passed, too!" Yoshino waved.
"Bur the Elite Ten of our generation is seriously amazing." Mito was awed.
"Thought the most impressive one is Tadokoro Megumi." Hayama pointed out.
"She basically handled all of the customers on her own." Takumi added.
"It's even a little creepy." Alice beamed.
"Yeah." Kurokiba agreed.
"So, what're you guys doing over summer vacation?" Souma asked his team.
"I'm going to be at Shiomi Lab as usual." Hayama answered.
"I'll probably take a trip somewhere in Japan with Isami." Takumi supplied.
"Why don't we take a trip around Japan and enjoy some local dishes?" Alice told Kurokiba.
"I'm probably going to head home a bit." Megumi stated.
"I see." Souma nodded. "Maybe I'll head back to Yukihira for the first time in ages, too."
"I hate to rain on your parade, but you might not have the chance for that." Dojima cut in.
"Chef Dojima?" Erina blinked. "What brings you here?"
"I happened to be nearby for some work." Dojima answered. "But there is something that I wanted to tell you immediately. The BLUE; a contest where young chefs complete for world-class fame. It hadn't been held for a while, but the spots and details for this year's tournament have been released."
