Chapter 48: The Blue Preliminaries

Shortly afterwards...

"The WGO has officially gotten word about the BLUE." Erina started the Elite Ten meeting. "According to the announcement, three representatives from Tōtsuki Academy may enter. What we need to figure out is who those three are going to be."

"All right, I'm gonna do it." Souma declared. "It's the competition that my dad was supposed to be in and I'm the First Seat."

"Hush your mouth!" Erina fumed. "Since the three who'll fill the spots were not appointed by the WGO, we will let the whole school compete for them, as we should."

"Are you planning on competing in the BLUE?" Alice asked.

"I've been invited outside of those three spots." Erina replied. "I'm already competing."

"No fair!" Souma and Alice protested.

"I can't blame you for finding that unfair." Erina admitted. "But I must compete in the BLUE no matter what."

"So, if I complete in the BLUE, I'll be able to compete against you, Nakiri." Souma grinned.

"I'm the one who's gonna compete in the BLUE." Kurokiba retorted.

"It doesn't look like they'll be picking from the top-ranking Elite Ten." Hayama pointed out.

"If it was determined by dirty money, Eizan'd be no competition." Kuga teased.

"And if we were going by the shrimpiest, you'd reign supreme, Kuga." Eizan fired back.

"I guess we'll have to figure out a way we're all satisfied with." Isshiki chuckled.

"We have to prepare for the Autumn Elections, too." Nene reminded. "So we don't have much time."

"So, who are we going to pick and how?" Takumi steered the problem back.

"Of course, Erina-sama has already figured this out." Hisako replied. "I will be participating as well."

"All will be settled the day after tomorrow, in what I call the BLUE Preliminaries." Erina made the decision.

Two days later...

"Now!" Urara declared excitedly. "The BLUE Preliminaries have began. This is a cooking competition for the three spots to complete in the BLUE, the world-renowned competition where every chef wants to be in. It doesn't matter if you get into the top three by sheer luck, you still get to go."

"The judges will be people of all ages." Sasaki continued. "Each one will be scoring each dish up to ten points. The three chefs with he highest scores will get to compete in the BLUE."

"The head judge is the Head Chef of Tōtsuki Resort." Urara introduced Dojima. "Dojima Gin."

"As usual, I won't be pulling any punches in my judging." Dojima assured.

"I'm glad to hear it, Chef Dojima." Erina noted. "You may use any ingredients you'd like." she addressed the gathered chefs. "The theme is soup. All participants must finish their dish within the allotted time. I wish you all the best of luck. And now, begin cooking."

"All the participating students are coming up with elaborate plans as they prepare their dishes." Sasaki spoke.

"And I'm done!" Yoshino was the first to present her dish. "Red Riding Hood-Style Gibier Soup."

How exhilarating. Inui squealed, taking a sip.

It's good, but spicy. Mizuhara admitted.

"I used the unami of several game meats added some cayenne peppers." Yoshino explained. "I got inspiration from Rindō-senpai and Megishima-senpai's dishes at the Team Shokugeki."

"My dish is Koji Tou Soup." Sakaki presented her soup next. "I went for a yosenabe that allows you to enjoy a wide variety of of tofu."

I'm going to melt! Both Berta and Cilla gushed after tasting.

"What's this?" Orie was shocked after tasting Marui's dish. "It's supposed to be tom yum kung..."

"But it tastes like borscht." Natsume was instantly overwhelmed.

"And I smell shark fin." Ōizumi noticed.

"I've combined the world's top three soups into one." Marui declared. "I call it the Marui Special."

"This is also three colors." Kikuchi beamed as the tri-colored soup in front of her.

"Three Kinds of Smoked Soy Milk." Ibusaki named his dish. "I used three main ingredients and three different kinds of wood chips for this soup."

"You'll find rice at the bottom of the soup." Mito presented her dish. "Which would make this a don."

"A medicinal soup with spirulina nad šaltibarščia." Hisako presented her dish.

"Spirulina is a kind of algae commonly known as a health food." Mizuhara noted.

'Šaltibarščia is a very colorful Lithuanian soup made from beets." Inui added.

"This is a rather playful dish." Kikuchi gaped at the test tubes of soup before her.

"Black tapioca and natural pigments." Alice giggled. "I present to you cold soups enriched with unami."

"A playful appearance and a variety of flavor." Tsunozaki blinked.

"Red King Crab Innards and Sea Urchin Soup with Salmon Roe." Kurokiba presented his dish.

"Red King crab, salmon roe and horse-dung sea urchin." Cilla squealed. "Three of the best things in the sea have been made into soup, Berta."

"The island in the middle gradually melts into the sea of flavor, making it even more fragrant." Berta nodded

"Urchin, unami, creamy!" the twins squealed after taking a lick.

"Is this sobagaki?" Ōizumi blinked.

"This looks rather standard." Kita noted.

"I carefully selected the finest ingredients and came up with the best combination." Nene explained.

"Hayama Akira's dish..." Orie was instantly overwhelmed by the overpowering scent from Hayama's pot.

"I smell curry." Natsume's nose immediately picked up the distinct aroma. "We get to relive the Autumn Elections Preliminaries."

"Relive?" Hayama scoffed. "I hope that not all you're expecting from me. Because I made something completely new. I've made Five Kinds of Curry Soup." he presented his pie dish with five different curries in it.

"Such fragrant curry!" Orie squealed. "And there are five kinds."

"And the bowl is made like a pie." Natsume noted. "The aroma's getting stronger."

"The spices baked into the bowl are slowly melting into the curries." Orie gasped.

"The more you eat, the more pleasure you'll feel from the aroma." Hayama declared.

"This is Aldini-style Cold Taglierini." Isami stepped forward.

"Can you really call this a soup?" Mizuhara wondered.

"It just looks like a Italian ribbon pasta that's been frozen." Inui remarked.

"I'm very proud of this dish." Isami assured. "Bono appetito."

"Looks like Isami stole your signature line, Takumi." Souma teased.

"It's not like it's an actual signature line." said blond retorted.

It all turned into liquid in my mouth! Inui squealed after biting a slice of the frozen pasta.

This is an exhilarating jalapeno soup. Mizuhara recognized the pepper.

"This is Aldini-style Cheese Fondue Minestrone." Takumi presented his dish. "Bono appetito."

"And there's the signature line." Souma chirped.

"It is not!" Takumi rebuked.

"The magnificent red of tomatoes, Italy's pride and joy." Kita was taken aback. "And several types of cheese scattered in an orthodox minestrone."

"What's in the little tomato bowl in the middle?" Cilla wondered.

"That's a cheese fondue-style soup." Takumi explained.

"Cheese fondue?" Cilla blinked. "So you're telling us to dip the cheese in the cheese?"

"Guess it's finally time for my dish." Souma grinned. "Yukihira-Style Golden Egg Lunch Set!"

"Golden eggs?" Inui blinked.

"At first glance, that is what it looks like," Mizuhara nodded. "But the theme is soup."

"Hm, I'm also done with my dish." Megumi spoke up.

"This is another dish that doesn't look like soup." Kikuchi looked at the bowl of seafood balls in her bowl.

"And how utterly plain and lame could you get?" Tsunozaki winced.

"Hey, Megumi." Souma suggested. "Since we're both here, why don't we do that thing?"

"You mean... that thing?" Megumi stammered.

"Dig in!" the pair chorused in unison.

"Yukihira Souma's dish looks golden." Orie noted.

"It must be wrapped up in meat broth gelatin so it won't fall apart." Natsume concluded. This is the flavor of a rich Hamburg steak. She gushed, as the flavor bomb exploded in her mouth.

I got melty yakiniku in mine. Orie squealed.

Mine is dense omelet rice that's been liquefied. Cilla moaned.

I got warm fried salmon soup in mine, Cilla. Berta groaned.

"And now, this concludes all the tasting and judging." Erina ended the BLUE Preliminaries.

"We will now announce the results!" Dojima declared. "First up, in third place, Yukihira Souma, 957 points."

"Darn, I'm third?" Souma cursed. "I just barely made it."

"In second place, Takumi Aldini." Dojima continued. "958 points."

Damn it, I lost to Takumi." Souma whined. "Let's face off again in the BLUE."

"I'll just crush you again, Yukihira." Takumi bragged.

"And the remaining spot, first place," Dojima continued. "With 959 points, Tadokoro Megumi."

"These three are the chefs who will be going to the BLUE." Urara and Sasaki chorused.

"But all the judges' reactions to my dish was..." Megumi stammered. "Less than favorable..."

"That was before we got to taste it, Tadokoro Megumi." Inui explained.

"Seafood meatballs." Mizuhara stated. "To think that in each and every one of those was miso soup created with multiple kinds of miso."

"Each one was like opening a jack-in-the-bx." Inui added. "It felt like we were traveling across Japan as kusudama were popping open with flavor."

"And each miso soup had other local ingredients mixed in." Kikuchi gushed.

"Everyone would feel some nostalgia from at least one of the flavors." Tsunozaki pointed out. "You definitely don't play fair."

"Thank you very much." Megumi blushed. "I got some inspiration from the dish Isshiki-senpai made at the Team Shokugeki. So, it's just a physical representation of all the fun memories I've shared with everyone here."

"Now, let me just say that those who placed fourth and below also came very close." Dojima voiced. "Well done, everyone."

Just then, a lone but continuous vibrate rippled from Souma's pocket. "It's Mako-chan." Souma looked at the caller ID on his phone screen. "Excuse me for a moment. Mako-chan, what's up?" he took the call.

"Souma, it's terrible!" Makoto's frantic voice sounded from her end.

"Mako-chan, calm down!" Souma tried to pacify his cousin. "What's wrong?"

"Uncle Jōichirō..." Makoto started. "He just lost a cooking competition! Not only that, he lost his knife, too!"

"Oyaji..." Souma breathed in disbelief. "Lost...? Mako-chan, what do you mean by that? Who was oyaji up against?"

"Give me a second." Makoto requested. "I'm sending you the website article right now."

A little while later...

"You keeping up, Isami?" Takumi asked, the Aldini twins had booked a spare kitchen on campus.

"I'm still perfectly fine, nii-chan." Isami assured.

"Good." Takumi nodded. "You'll help me prepare for the BLUE right until it starts up, then. Both our girlfriends are doing their own thing."

"You're just mad that Ami went off the radar and hasn't contacted you yet." Isami teased.

"And you know where Makoto is these days?" Takumi fired back.

"She went back to Yukihira Diner." Isami supplied. "She told me as much, seeing that she was brought up by Chef Saiba."
