Starting school was always hard. Especially when you joined in the middle of it.
Yuyuko was nervous. It was the first day of school. The first day of a new school too. She had to transfer schools this year due to bullying problems in her last school. Hopefully this school would be better.
But, now she knew no one here. What did she do? It was hard for her to approach people and talk to them. She was afraid to get close to people. Every time she did, she always ended up getting hurt. Why would this time be any different?
Maybe if she just... didn't mention she was trans...
But, she only told people that when she felt she could trust them. Was she really that bad at judging people? Everyone she's told always reacted negatively. She didn't understand why. She doubted she ever really would.
She had just arrived at the school. She nervously looked around. Should she try and start up a conversation? Was that a bad idea? She didn't even know who to try and talk to. Most people were already in conversations with their friends. She didn't want to intrude on anyone.
Maybe it was best to just be a loner? It would definitely save her the trouble of a lot of things.
Yuyuko made her way inside. A lot of students were at their lockers already, putting things away. Yuyuko wasn't sure where her locker was. She nervously glanced at the paper in her hands. It had all the information she would need to get through the day. That included her locker number and combination. Now, just to find it.
It was hard. She had no idea where to look. None of the numbers were close to hers. Where was her locker? Should she ask for help?
That was when Yuyuko spotted someone that made her feel different. The girl seemed very anxious. Maybe she was the best bet? Yuyuko doubted she would do much. She looked to scared to try anything.
So, that was where she went. It wasn't long before she stood before the girl.
"Hi. Um... I'm Yuyuko. I'm new and I was wondering if you could help me find my locker?" Yuyuko said.
"U-um... h-hi..." The girl stammered, "I... I guess... I can try..."
"This is the number."
"O-oh. Um... I'll... I'll show you."
"Thank you. Uh, what's your name?"
"R-Rui..."
"It's nice to meet you, Rui."
Yuyuko found herself often going to Rui for help adjusting to the school. It wasn't long before Rui became more comfortable around her. They even started hanging out a bit at school.
Maybe having a friend wouldn't be so bad? That was what Yuyuko was thinking now. She liked Rui. Rui was nice. She seemed very sweet. Yuyuko hoped that this time, she had someone who would actually accept her. Of course, it was far too early in their relationship to say that.
"Rui? Do you want to hang out after school?"
"Um... where?"
"They finished building the new fountain in the park. I want to see what it looks like."
"S-sure. I'll join you."
Yuyuko smiled, "Great. We can go there as we walk home from school then."
Months had gone by in the blink of an eye. Yuyuko found herself having grown even closer to Rui. They were hardly apart from each other. And Yuyuko felt it was finally time to tell Rui. She just hoped she wasn't making another mistake. Rui seemed so nice. She should be accepting.
But, Yuyuko had been wrong before. What if she was wrong again? No. She had to think positively. She could let herself drown in negativity again. This time would be different. This time it would go well.
"Rui? Can we talk?"
"Hmm? Sure."
They were hanging out at Yuyuko's house currently. Yuyuko didn't want to lose the opportunity she had to talk. It was now or never.
"I... need to tell you something..."
"What is it, Yukko?"
"Well... um... I um... I'm trans..."
"Hmm? So, are you not a girl or...?"
"I... I'm a trans girl."
"O-oh. Sorry!"
"I-it's okay... I should've been more specific." Yuyuko let out a dry laugh, "After how many times I've done this, that's the first I've had a misunderstanding."
"S-sorry, Yukko." Rui seemed embarrassed by what she had said.
"Don't be. It lightened things up, actually." Yuyuko smiled at her, "I'm glad that you accept me, though. And that you would've even if I wasn't a girl."
"Of course. You're my best friend, Yukko! I can't abandon you!"
"I wish everyone was like you, Rui..." Yuyuko frowned and looked down.
"Yukko?"
"You're... you're the first friend to stay with me after being told..."
"What? You... aren't serious." Rui was staring at her with wide eyes, unable to process what she had just been told.
"I am. Every time I've told my friends... they've left me."
Rui hugged her tightly, "Then I'll make sure to be the best friend I can be for you. To make up for all those horrible people."
Yuyuko cracked a smile, "Thank you, Rui..."
