Chapter 49: Noir
"Saiba Asahi?" Takumi echoed, after Megumi informed the Aldini twins about what happened between Souma and Asahi.
"That's Suzuki-sensei's real name?" Isami blinked.
"I don't really get it, either." Megumi admitted. "But that's what he said."
"So what's going on here?" Takumi mused. "Is he saying he's somehow affiliated with Yukihira's father, Chef Saiba? Could he be a secret love child?" a sudden thought came to him.
"You shouldn't say things like that without solid proof, nii-chan." Isami sighed.
"I guess you're right." Takumi agreed. "My apologies."
"So, where's Yukihira?" Isami asked.
"He went back home for the day." Megumi answered. "He said he'll meet up with Kino-san to check up on the diner."
Meanwhile, in the Yukihira Diner...
"Guess we'll open up things from here." Souma nodded as he and Makoto opened up the diner's gates.
"We're home." the two cousins opened up the room's window and took a look at the family photo on the wardrobe.
"What the hell is Dad up to, anyway?" Souma wondered outloud.
"How would I know?" Makoto shrugged.
"It's not like he's ever going to answer, but..." Souma looked down at his still dialing phone.
"EH!" Makoto exclaimed suddenly, seeing Jōichirō outside the diner.
"I guess you two are home, Souma, Makoto." Jōichirō grinned.
"Why are you here, Uncle?" Makoto asked.
"I just had some work nearby." Jōichirō replied. "So, I heard from Gin." he told his son. "But you're gonna participate in the BLUE? Don't wuss out and bail like I did."
"The hell I will!" Souma snapped, Makoto sweatdropping as the redhead headbutted the older chef in the stomach.
In the family room...
"I see." Jōichirō noted after Souma related what had occurred between him and Asahi. "So, Asahi managed to make his way into Tōtsuki. And then you lost."
"And he mentioned that he beat you, too." Souma supplied.
"He wasn't lying." Jōichirō admitted. "It looks like something I did ended up causing you trouble again."
"Something you did?" Makoto blinked. "What do you mean, Uncle?"
"That guy..." Jōichirō started." Saiba Asahi... one day. I was asked to help out at an American friend's charity." he explained, after informing the two cousins about his relation to Asahi. "I went to an orphanage to make some food for the kids there. That's where I met him. He kept saying how good my food was and whenever I visited the place later, he would help me out in the kitchen. For some reason, I couldn't let myself abandon the kid. He also reminded me of my juniors at the Polar Star Dormitory that I'd left behind. So I ended up looking after him. I took him everywhere and taught him good judgment as well as how to cook. He had a knack for it. Eventually, he got serious about becoming a chef and started working at one of the eateries in town. That's also around the time that he said he wanted to take the Saiba name. I thought , 'Sure, why not'? He was a great student. But then I told the kid goodbye."
"But why?" Souma blinked.
"I made up my mind." Jōichirō answered. "I had a place to go home to, so I couldn't keep wandering around. I was going to run Yukihira like I was supposed to."
"Auntie Tamako..." Makoto breathed in realization.
"So because of that, I hadn't seen him in a while." Jōichirō added. "But then, he showed up before me out of the blue, in New York and he challenged me to a cooking contest for my knife. You know," he slapped his hand on Souma's back. "It's probably a good thing that you lost to him. I mean, if you won, it's make me look weaker."
"Stop being so happy about your son's loss, you shitty dad!" Souma snapped, sending another headbutt onto Jōichirō's stomach.
"I'm sure he wanted to get revenge on me for abandoning him." Jōichirō surmised. "That's probably why he challenged you, too. Sorry about that, Souma. You ended up in this mess because of me again..."
"The hell are you talking about, Dad?" Souma barked.
"We get that he's your student, Uncle." Makoto sighed. "But seriously, getting revenge on you for leaving him? Is he a kid? Did he really expect you to just straight up abandon you family for him?"
"Moreover, he challenged me and I was the one who lost." Souma insisted. "So, this has nothing to do with you anymore. This has to do with me. I'm definitely going to win next time. I know, let's have a cooking contest, right here, right now. You can spare that much time, can you?"
"Sure..." Jōichirō nodded.
"Then, I'll go get the kitchen ready." Makoto stood up, already guessing where this was heading.
"Our kids are something else." Jōichirō smiled at the family photo on the cardboard. "They're just like you, Tamako."
Meanwhile...
Ami, using her capacity as the secondary heiress of the Hakuizumi Clan, gathered the rest of the BLUE Preliminaries participants to an official meeting. "Everyone," she addressed the gathered Tōtsuki students. "Have anyone of you heard of Noir?"
"I've heard of them before." Nene spoke up. "I believe they're also called Chefs of the Night."
"That's right." Ami nodded. "They're a group of chefs that only show up in places no reputable chef would go, for example, secret dinners for VIPs or parties thrown by underworld figures and make a fortune. All of them are made up of social outcasts and depraved chefs who have no qualms of breaking the law. And their top tier chefs have also been invited to the BLUE. Now that their main power is diverted to the BLUE, that leaves the remaining Noir just vulnerable enough for us to strike a finishing blow. That is why, I humbly request all of you to help me in ending Noir."
"In other words, we're using a pincer assault." Eizan surmised. "Very smart, Kaya no Hime."
"In that case, we'll split into two teams." Isshiki laid down the plans. "One group will cover the BLUE, while the other will take down the remaining Noir. I'll also contact the alumni for additional manpower."
Two days later...
"Mako-chan, how's Yukihira?" Isami asked, the Aldini twins and Megumi were invited out by the brunette.
"Uncle Jōichirō's 'training' him for the BLUE." Makoto sighed. "By having cook-off after cook-off. I swear those two..." she shook her head. "Anyway, let's get back to the matter at hand; about Saiba Asahi. And that's what uncle Jōichirō have to say." she related what Jōichirō had told her and Souma.
"Mako-chan, what did you mean by 'at that time'?" Isami inquired.
"Ah..." Makoto recalled. "Souma and I were about twelve at time... and Auntie Tamako... died."
"Died?" Megumi gaped.
"An undiagnosed heart ailment." Makoto supplied. "Or that was what Uncle Jōichirō could gather from the autopsy."
"So, Saiba Asahi wants revenge against Chef Saiba for... what? Leaving him behind to take care of his blood family?" Takumi exclaimed incredulously.
"Stupid reason, right?" Makoto sipped her green apple soda. "I have photos." she chirped. "You guys wanna see? This is Uncle Jōichirō." she pointed to the family photo in her phone galley. "This is Auntie Tamako. This is Souma. And this is me."
"Souma's so cute." Megumi gushed.
"That headband..." Takumi pointed to white headband around Tamako's neck.
"Yup, it's the same one Souma has around his wrist." Makoto nodded. "Do you guys want to hear the story about how Souma got that scar on his left eyebrow?"
