It took Tony Stark only two months after the utter decimation of Hydra to be fed up with inaction. He had already been ranting and irritating everyone when at one of the Weekend meetups, Nela wished to see France one day. His face immediately lighted up, and before Pepper could stop him, he announced that they were all going on a vacation as it was what everyone needed. Pepper and FRIDAY tried to argue against it, but none of their arguments stood firm in the face of a force that was Tony Stark. When it became clear who he meant by everyone, more people joined in the argument, but he swept past all of them one way or another. He even managed to make Mordo grumble, which was nothing less than an achievement. While JARVIS enquired(more like informed) the people like the Barton, the Parkers, the Howlett's, Natasha's siblings, the rogue SHIELD agents, and Colonel Rhodes, Tony went to inform the rescued Winter soldiers himself.
It had taken only a week for Betty, Bruce, Tony, and May to find all of the modifications HYDRA had done to the three soldiers. One of their findings had been a chip implanted in the hippocampus parts of their brain, which had made May Parker curse like a sailor to whoever had done it. It took another few days and camouflaged inquiries from the specialist around the world that they had been able to ascertain the chips' function. Somehow, HYDRA had managed to invent technology that could suppress only a specific part of memories. The discovery had surprised all of them as it was considered impossible to do so. After a brief discussion with FRIDAY and Natasha, they had decided to see if the chips could be used to suppress the programming HYDRA had made in all three soldiers. With FRIDAY and JARVIS working along with them, they had been able to find a way to do so.
All three soldiers, who had been woken up and restrained in the specifically designed cells, had agreed to be operated on once the procedure was explained to them. James Barnes had delayed a little longer, wanting to talk to Tony alone. The man in question had finally visited the assassin for the first time that evening. After a tense exchange in which Tony had accepted that he knew about his parent's murder and still wanted to help him, Barnes had agreed to the surgery. The entire procedure had last a whole night, but it had been a success. It had an adverse effect initially, as when the memories the chips had been suppressing came back, all three of the soldiers tried to suicide. Fortunately, they were under observation and were quickly stopped. There were a few more tries, resulting in everyone scrambling for a solution, which came in the form of Ben Parker's advice. After talking to his security chief for an hour, Tony had marched down towards the cells and asked them if they really wanted to die. Once all three of them affirmed, he had agreed to help them to do so, but not before they agreed to do two things for him in return. He had refused to tell them what he wanted them to do and made no guarantees whatsoever, standing firm and waiting. Barnes had been the first to cave, citing his reason for killing his parents, and the rest two had followed soon. The first thing that Tony had demanded was recollecting as much information as possible about their victims and writing it down so that their loved ones could be given closure one day. Once all three had agreed, he had played the video his other self had recorded inside the portal in the first New York invasion. A promise to fight along him was what he demanded, and should they survive it, he would help them end their life if they still want it. A chance to do some good, an opportunity to pay back and deal with the guilt which they would have. The three winter soldiers enquired a lot more before finally agreeing to his demands. That night, another round of surgery took place. With their consent, FRIDAY inserted a small number of nanites in their body, which could help her track and also disable them if necessary. Since then, the three soldiers had been staying in the guest apartments outside the mansion, dedicating their time to training and learning more about the new world.
So, when Tony burst through into their shared room, all three of them had tensed until they saw his smiling face. Once again, Stark had to face arguments and refusal, but he overrode all of them. He promised to take all steps to ensure everyone would remain safe and that none of them would lapse. Natasha joined them soon enough, offering them a SHIELD-issued Photostatic veil that would make them unrecognizable. Tony had nearly crowed when the three finally agreed before ordering them to pack up and join everyone in the mansion by the evening.
As the entire group arrived at a private airport that evening, they were greeted by Tony's personal Boeing 757 waiting for them. Once the plane took off, James Rhodes grabbed Tony before dragging him to the area where the winter soldiers were sitting.
"There is something I wanted to discuss with all of you."
Tony stopped trying to escape before turning to look at his best friend.
"What's the matter, Rhodey?"
The Colonel took a deep breath before bringing out three sheets of paper.
"Being Tony's liaison to the military, I have much more authorization as an Airforce officer than I should have. I used that to look up the old written military records about you three and found a few files."
He passed one of the sheets as others stared at him.
"We already know about Seargent Barnes's life before he was lost in the mission before he fell off that train. Since he was still a part of the army and no body was found despite a thorough search, he is listed as missing in action, not killed in action in the records. I believe that was the work of General Philips. There was not much information for the other two that FRIDAY could find."
He passed on the sheet to Barnes before turning to look at Meyer.
"Before you joined SHIELD, you were part of the U.S. Navy Seal team. It seems instead of leaving the Navy, you earned a deputation to SHIELD for a period of five years, in the fourth year of which SHIELD informed the Navy that you had gone missing. Since SHIELD never cleared the circumstances of your dissapernece, you are also marked as missing in action. Your sister, Madeline, still enquires about any updates every month."
"Sh...she is still alive?"
The Colonel looked at the document before answering.
"She should be 63 years old, according to the information you provided at your joining, and that's not too old, Lieutenant."
When nothing came from Meyer, Rhodes turned towards Erica Green.
"Seargent Green, same as the Lieutenant, you worked with U.S. armed forces before joining SHIELD. You were a personal liaison to Howard Stark for both the military and SHIELD. You were marked as missing in action after you failed to check in on a mission whose details are retracted. Howard Stark himself financed the search for you, but it was unsuccessful. You were initially marked as killed in action since you disappeared in what was then the Soviet Union, but it was later changed to missing in action at Howard Stark's insistence."
He passed the sheets to all of them before looking at Tony.
"With their missing in action mark, all three of them would be considered as prisoners of war by the armed forces. I would like to inform about them of some of the trusted high ranks officers. I know about the deal you all made with Tony. The armed forces can help you manage everything and protect you in ways Tony would never be able to..."
The Colonel continued to put more and more points forward, which made the three winter soldiers confused about the decision. Tony stopped him in between before looking at them.
"It would be your decision. I know this would not be as secure as if you would have remained hidden, but it would give us an easy way to pull you all into the roster of Avengers eventually."
When all three winter soldiers agreed to think about it, Tony left them to talk to FRIDAY and Pepper about it. The A.I. agreed to inform the military about the soldiers but argued against informing them about the medical procedures or letting them take the Winter soldiers away. He knew there was no way they would be able to convince her if she was not ready for it, and it would fall upon him to inform Rhodey about it. Grumbling, he left the cabin, leaving behind a sleeping daughter and an amused girlfriend who was trying to perform a hostile takeover of A.I.M. Ten hours later, they landed on another private airport owned by S.I. and were driven to the local company headquarters. Pepper had bullied him into checking over all the S.I. facilities in the places they would be visiting. He had tried to talk her out of it, but when FRIDAY had advised to use it for interviewing candidates for a training program overseen by him, he had reluctantly agreed to it. While it was already decided that Harley Keener would be one selected to be his personal intern along with Penny Parker, any other who managed to impress him would be admitted to a long-term guidance program. The children selected for the interview were vetted by both JARVIS and FRIDAY, so he was sure that they would be interesting.
The next twenty-five days were the most relaxing day in a long time for a lot of group members. The photos that KAREN had collected showed a delightful time. There were photos of the ever tense Laura Howlett giggling in water on a beach, Nela, Penny, Morgan, and the Barton children as they tried to build a sandcastle, ladies getting angry at Tony, who was even more fussy shopper than them, the group filling up the entire restaurants, Natasha Romanoff in a snowball fight with her siblings, an irritated Logan getting serenaded by a French man while others laughed behind him, the Stark family meetings with employees at different branches and finally the photo of the whole group in front of the Eiffel Tower. It should have been a security nightmare, but with the rogue SHIELD agents around them every time and FRIDAY keeping an eye on everything, nothing untoward had happened. The day before they were scheduled to leave back for the states, FRIDAY asked to talk to Tony, Natasha, Rhodes, and Bruce alone.
"There were a few more things that happened in my old world that were not included in the video as Boss was not involved in it. One of them was an incident that took place in London on the 2nd of November 2013, and it involved Prince Thor, Doctor Jane Foster, Darcy Lewis, and Dr. Erig Selvig. From what Boss gathered after it was over, a spaceship unlike before had appeared at the center of Greenwich right at the time when an event known as convergence had taken place. According to Prince Thor, as the nine realms travel within Yggradsil orbiting Midgard, every 5000 years, all these worlds align perfectly in an event he called as convergence. During this time, the border between all the world becomes blurred, and points of travel between them open. Dr. Foster had earlier traveled through one of these points earlier, and when she came back, a substance known as Aether was flowing through her body. Prince Thor had taken her to Asgard after a brief scuffle with few policemen and returned on the 2nd of November to fight against the aliens known as Dark Elves that had come out of the ship. Prince Thor's mother had died a few days ago, and he thought that Prince Loki was dead at that time. I was able to confirm that the same thing happened in this world until now."
"Why didn't you inform us earlier, FRIDAY?" Tony Stark asked in a calm manner.
"Because initially, I concluded that there was no point in interfering, Mr. Stark. The substance known as Aether is actually the reality stone in a liquid form. Thor and his companions were able to deal with the invaders without much damage to property and civilians."
"So, why are you telling us now?" Bruce Banner nearly demanded.
"It is about bringing the Avengers more onto the world stage, isn't it?" Ms. Romanoff asked.
"A part of it, Ms. Romanoff. While the world does need to know that the Avengers will step up to fight the unknown, it would also bring light to the fact that the New York invasion was not a one-time thing. The world would have to be informed one day about Thanos and the war he would bring. The involvement of Avengers in tomorrow's event would bring it into everyone's notice more than it happened in my old world. It would help dispel the theory that Earth is not as secured as humanity thinks it to be, maybe make things easier once the news about Thanos comes out."
Soon after all of them agreed to help Thos, it was decided that they would skip the day's plans and leave for Dunkirk immediately, their last scheduled stop. Boss would be using the nanotech armors while Ms. Romanoff and Colonel Rhodes had brought her equipment along. Dr. Banner would be staying near the fight, only transforming it there was a need for Hulk. With that, the four of them dispersed, each concerned about FRIDAY's decisions.
The next day, Jane Foster was trying to sync her equipment to distract Malekith when suddenly a familiar voice came from her handheld transmitter.
"That's a nice bit of equipment you got there, Dr. Foster. Would you mind a little help?"
By the time she finally identified the voice, its owner landed beside her in the Iron man suit along with Natasha Romanoff.
"Dr. Stark... I.."
"Finally, someone uses the right title. J, mark this occasion on the calendar."
"Already done, Sir." Came a smooth reply from her transmitter.
"Nat is going to help you, Doctor, while I go save your boyfriend. Here, this communicator will connect you to the S.I. team in the neighborhood. Ask them if you need anything."
With that his faceplate came down, and he blasted off, leaving her with a confused Erik and amused Black Widow.
"What do you need me to do, Doctor?"
While his lady love was trying not to get flustered in front of the infamous Black Widow, Thor Odinson was being bounced around like a ball by Malekith. He was waiting for a perfect shot to use Mjolnir when another wave of Aether threw him against a pillar. As he was bounced back, he saw several red spikes heading towards him. Thor raised his hands on instinct, but nothing hit him. Opening his eyes, he saw the familiar vision of the man of Iron standing in front of him with a near-transparent shield raised. He had no idea how such a thing had stopped a powerful substance like Aether in mid-attack.
"What's up, Pointbreak. You are having a party here and didn't bother to invite any of us."
Thor stood up, wiping the blood off his lips.
"No, Stark..."
Before he could say anything else, another wave of Aether hit them. Stark's shield was unable to hold it back this time, and both of them were tossed away.
"What does this monkey face wants, Thor?"
The god of thunder stood up again, swiping some spikes away.
"He wants to spread the Darkness in all realms by using Aether during the convergence."
Stark was silent for a few seconds before speaking again.
"How long does this convergence lasts?"
"Minutes, Stark."
"It seems then we have to distract him only for a few minutes. Sugarbear, you are up."
Thor was confused for a few seconds about what Stark was talking about when he saw something diving for Malekith. A suit similar to the one of Stark passed over Malekith, and the entire area exploded. He watched in amazement as Malekith was thrown away while other dark elves started falling down from a hail of bullets that were coming from the other suit. Stark's voice made him focus again as he lifted Mjolnir.
"Come on, Point Break, let's kick his ass.
A smile came on his face as he followed Stark in the swirling red storm. As Thor and Ironman were trying to reach Malekith, Colonel Rhodes broke off and went after the other elves that were attacking the civilians. He was also coordinating the military aircraft that was inbound to attack the alien ship and the armed forces that were trying to evacuate people and set up a perimeter. Looping around a large building, his eyes caught a giant monster emerging out of nowhere on the streets, but it was not its ugliness that made him shiver, but rather the sight of a couple standing in front of it. While he was too far away to do anything about it, one member of Avengers was not.
"Bruce, We need Hulk in front of the royal building immediately."
Fortunately, Banner was paying attention to everything that was happening.
"I see them. Evacuate everyone else and tell the other not to shoot at me."
The Colonel didn't get a chance to reply as with a following a loud roar; Hulk jumped right in front of the couple and punched the monster back. Leaving the green behemoth to deal with it, he directed a few soldiers to extract the couple to a safe area. He was still trying to contain the elves while keeping an eye on the growing red storm when his comms crackled with Natasha's voice.
"Rhodes, I need to get close to Malekith. Can you take me there?"
"I can, but you might not survive in there, Romanoff."
FRIDAY's voice broke in before Natasha could reply.
"The nanite reserve in your suit would be able to form a basic armor for her, Colonel. There is an arrangement to carry her in your suit."
Seeing no other option, he agreed and landed next to Romanoff. FRIDAY took over the control from EDITH while he observed a dark mass moving from his suit towards Natasha and engulfed around her like a protective metal covering. Without any prompt, he lifted up, carrying her along while she was holding what looked like three large prongs.
"What is that?"
"Something that should stop him," came Romanoff's screaming reply. Having no idea what she meant, he rose high above the storm and then dropped down right at the center of it. To his amazement, Romanoff jumped off while he was still high in the air, throwing one of the prongs first and then landing with the other two in her hands. All three of them had struck true, piercing Malekith and pinning him to the place. He swooped down and picked Romanoff up, just in time to avoid two beams that struck Malekith, throwing the alien back into its ship. He heard Romanoff say something, and then a second later, the ship and alien vanished from the sight.
Once Malekith was dispatched, Mordo appeared next to Tony and started waving his hands as they had planned. The Aether, as FRIDAY had called it, started convulsing and forming into a ball. Less than three minutes after his arrival, Mordo left the area, the reality stone trailing behind him in a locked magical construct. Thor enquired about it heatedly but agreed to wait for an explanation after Tony and Romanoff's insistence.
Hey all. I am shiting the timeline quite a bit to afjust things as I had planned them for. The age of Penny and Laura wold also be adjusted as Peter got his powers at age of 14, so I am going to change that part too.
