The group of now five went to recuperate at the Proving Grounds. One of the many shortcuts Edgemaster showed Xan before he left. (It was through these portals that Xan landed in China and met Baba) They took a brief rest so Baba could tend the still fresh scar on Xan's face.
"Ahh! Ahh, damn it, Baba! That hurts! What is that?"
"It's rubbing alcohol, Spectre. I have to disinfect the wound before I can treat it. Now stop moving!"
"It's hard to do that when it hurts so damn much!"
"You want me to hold him down, Baba-chan?"
"No, Taki. I can do it myself. Now relax, Spectre. I'm almost finished."
"Fine. Just get it over with, Baba."
"Will do!"
While Baba tended to Xan's wounds, Kin was sparring with Edgemaster after requesting to do so. Despite the fights being one-sided, Kin learned a lot about how he fought, Taki watching through the window in the room where the trio was.
"Why does that thief fight so rough and rugged? I thought they were supposed to be smooth and sly."
"Kin is more slippery and cunning. He fights with the illusion of being undisciplined to throw his opponents off. It's just the fact that Edgemaster is his opponent that views him as being unskilled. That's what he made me feel like when he trained me. I bet Katti felt the same too."
There was merit in Xan's words as Edgemaster has been a warrior for practically his entire life. Few beings rival him in that regard. It made sense for Edgemaster to run Kin down like he's doing now.
"Besides, what does it matter to you, Taki? You've never inquired about the way I fight."
Once again, Xan's words held the truth. Why is this Thief and former Spy catching her undivided attention? It couldn't be because of what he did to her former clansmen. She was done with the Fu-Ma Clan, and they could burn in hell for all she cared. So, what was it? Taki couldn't figure it out, despite all her wisdom.
"I don't know, Dragon. It's on the tip of my tongue, but I can't identify it."
"Well, I doubt that it will decay your fighting ability, so don't let it worry you."
"Alright, Xan. You're good to go."
"Thanks, Baba. You're the best."
"I know, Spectre."
"If you say so. After Kin gets a couple of more matches in with Edgemaster, we'll head out."
"Say, Spectre. Where's Amy?"
"No clue. After we arrived here, Katti took her went off somewhere. I hope they aren't lost. I'd hate to leave Amy behind."
Kin was finished sparring and was getting ready to rendezvous with the others when Edgemaster stopped him. "Despite being self-taught you, have wonderful instincts. They serve you well!"
"Thank you very much, Edgemaster. I appreciate the opportunity to spar with you!"
"Where did you learn how to move like that?"
"Living in the hoods of Dalkia. Back home, my family was dirt poor, and my parents couldn't find work. So I took up thievery to help put food on the table. I taught myself how to use a dagger if I got cornered and move if I got caught. I combined the two into what you just bore witness to."
"And what of your dagger? It looks well crafted, but a bone dagger will last for so long."
"The 'Gold Mine' is a personal creation. I made it after I killed a bear with one of my bombs. I sold the pelt, ate the meat, and made the dagger from its spine. It's pretty sturdy, but I can see where you're coming from. I can already see cracks on it."
"If you don't mind, I know of some folk who could craft you a new dagger, provided you have the money. But that doesn't seem to be the case with you."
"Where is the shop?"
"Shanghai. I'll tell Xan to make a small detour for you. The shop owners will be happy to see him after a year and a half."
After telling Xan and regrouping together, they arrived at the Weapons shop shortly after. The group entered, Hualin becoming wide-eyed after seeing Xan.
"Xan-san! You're alive!"
"Yeah, Hualin. It's not like I died or anything."
"Uhh, Cepheus!"
"Hualin, what is it?"
"Xan is alive! He's right here!"
Cepheus poked his head out, and upon seeing Xan, ran and gave him a hug. "Xan, my boy! I thought you were killed at Ostrheinsburg!"
"No, I almost did if it weren't for Edgemaster. My old sword, however, didn't make it."
"What!? How? Qing Long was sturdier than Po Shan!"
"Soul Calibur, that's what. Elysium came out and split it in two. So now I use these."
Xan pulled out a Spadroon that Hualin took and analyzed. "It's already starting to break. Despite my best efforts, it's not as durable as Qing Long was."
"You think I don't know that? Qing Long was a smithing miracle. Who knows how long it'll take for it to be replicated? But I'll make do. Now give it back."
Xan reached for the weapon, but Hualin pulled it away from him, shaking her head in the process. "Nuh-uh. This is my chance to once again show you my smithing chops. I'll make you two new swords that'll put these Spadroons to shame. Count on it."
"But that's not why we're here. Kin here needs a new dagger because it's about to break."
"Oh? Let me see your current Dagger, Kin."
Kin showed her The Gold Mine, and the group could've sworn they saw a little sparkle in her eyes.
"Oh my... the craftsmanship is incredible! Who made this?"
"I did, from the spine of a Grizzly Bear. It's definitely my best work, but it's starting to show wear and cracks. Can you make me a new dagger?"
"Of course! I'm going to be busy these next few days, and these two projects will do just that. As for the price..."
Xan and Kin immediately pulled out their coin purses, but Hualin halted them. "No money."
The two gave each other a brief look before Xan sighed. "I don't like where this is going."
"I want... a date with the both of you. After this conflict is over, of course."
The room had scattered reactions to what they just heard. Xan looked annoyed while Kin was dumbfounded. Amy showed her confusion as Raphael never told her what a 'date' was. Baba tried her hardest to conceal her laughter but failed miserably.
Taki's expression was unreadable, but deep down, she was seething. How dare this woman who just met this man ask him out! But there goes her undivided attention on Kin again. Why did this bother her? This was starting to slowly eat at her, and if she doesn't figure it out, it will eventually drive her insane.
"I'd rather pay you, Hualin." Xan, fortunately, broke the awkward silence. "You only want to date me because of my status."
"So what? I can rub it in Lynette and Valeria's faces that I went on a date with the Black Dragon of Osaka. We've always dreamed about this since meeting you in person a year and a half ago. Now I get to do it and craft your new weapons! It's a dream come true!"
"Yeah yeah, Hualin. I still want the Spadroon back, or we'll find someone else to craft our weapons."
"Fine, here. The weapons will be ready in two days. Come back then, and they'll be ready."
"That's what we wanted to hear. Alright, we'll get out of your hair. See you in two days."
"Two days. Right!"
The group of five left the shop as Valeria and Hualin went to resupply their shops, respectively.
"Xan's a fascinating man. I can see a bright future for him."
"Really? Am I in it?"
"Hualin..."
"I'm serious! This is my chance to impress him! I need to redeem myself after what happened with Po Shan!"
"No, Hualin. You will be working on Kin's Dagger."
"Wha...? What do you mean, Cepheus?"
"I will make Xan's new swords. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Xan has reinvigorated my will to smith again! Well, this time anyway."
"But, I always wanted to craft weapons for Xan, Cepheus! Let me make his weapons!"
"No, Hualin. My decision is final. Now, be a dear and get these metals for the weapons we will be crafting."
There was no arguing with Cepheus after his mind was made up. Hualin (sadly) complied and went to get the materials.
Meanwhile, the group separated as Kin and Taki went into the town to find a place to stay while Kin and Xan's weapons were being made. Xan, Baba, and Amy were walking towards a graveyard. Baba wanted to know what they were doing there.
"We're visiting a gravestone. Since we're in China, I want to make a couple of stops, the weapons shop not being one of them. Okay, here we are."
The Gravestone read: Kalina Valentine Xiaolon. Priestess, Warrior, Friend. She will be dearly missed.
Baba gasped after reading it. Xan clasped his hands together and swiftly prayed. The two quickly joined him as they all made their peace with a friend who was taken too soon.
"Zasalamel will pay for this. But not after we deal with the Swords."
"Right. We're with you all the way, Big Brother."
"Amy is correct. We're all friends here. Nothing is going to stop us. Not Elysium, not Inferno, and not that prick Zasalamel."
"Excuse me, but did you just say Zasalamel? What do you know of him?"
The group turned to see a woman, who was none other than Ivy!
Xan motioned for Amy to hide behind him. "Ivy Valentine! What are you doing in China?"
"I came to visit the grave of my younger sibling. It seems you're doing the same, Mister Dragon."
"How do you know of me?"
"Answer my question first, Dragon Boy. Or face the fury of my sword!"
"Fine, as I refuse to spill blood of any kind on Kalina's grave."
That caused Ivy's expression to soften.
"I'm afraid I don't know as much as I would like. All I know is that Zasalamel is responsible for Kalina's death. The reason he did it was he needed Soul Calibur to awaken itself. He cut Kalina and her husband down, who at the time wielded Soul Calibur, broke down, and allowed Soul Calibur to possess him. Shun's whereabouts are unknown, however."
Ivy looked unfazed by what she just heard, but at least the light on her sister's death had been shed. "As of my knowledge of your identity. Kalina wrote me often as she told you, we were rather close. She told me of you when you met her and your reputation. She said that you were kindred spirits in a way, and how because of you, she would visit her General's grave after freeing herself from Soul Edge. But you dress nothing like she described."
"That was also because of my run-in with Soul Calibur. I almost died during the encounter. Some nice folk patched me up before giving me new clothes and weapons."
"I see. It would seem that your crusade against the Cursed Blade is far from finished. The look in your eye shows determination and content. Yet, it shows aggression and contempt. In her letters, she always stated that I'd get along well with you. With what you're doing, it seems Kalina was correct in that regard. If you don't mind, may I pay my respects?"
"Go ahead, Ivy."
"Cheers."
The trio cleared the way as Ivy walked up and placed a bouquet of flowers on Kalina's grave. She then recognized Baba. "Well, if it isn't Barbara! What are you doing outside Lakeside?"
"I retired from being a Gladiator a year and a half ago. I'm now a scholar. Oh, and I go by Baba now, Isabella."
"You two know each other?"
"Oh, yes. I was Barbara's top better. Whenever she appeared in Lakeside, I always placed max bets on her wins. Thanks to her, I'm now even richer than I was when I inherited the Valentine fortune."
"And it was thanks to Isabella that I got 50% commission on my winnings."
"Oh, Barbara. Just call me Ivy, darling. We then met after her 25th consecutive victory. She became one of the few people I can call a friend. Really though, Barbara darling? A scholar?"
"Yes, Ivy. Don't worry, I still can fight like I was still in Lakeside."
"Good, but why are you traveling with Little Dragon Boy here?"
"I plan on writing a book on the dangers of the Soul Swords. Coincidentally, Xan here is planning on confronting them both. So, I wish to see them with my own eyes in all of their corruption."
Ivy then glanced at Amy. "And you, little miss. What are you doing with them? I thought you were staying with Raphael."
Amy remained silent.
"Raphael left her after she refused to consume a friend of ours. I then purified her, and now she travels with us."
Ivy then scanned Amy and realized that Xan was telling the truth. "How did you purify her?"
"I wish to keep that information to myself. You never know who's listening."
"Fair enough. I came to Kalina's gravestone, and I met a friend of hers and mine. What a lucky day, indeed. I appreciate the information, scarce as it is. If you ever happen to find yourself in England, look me up. I'll do whatever I can to help you rid the world of that damned sword. Ta-ta, Dragon Boy."
Ivy then left, a woman of her word. She could be a great help if the group found themselves in England for whatever reason. After paying their respects to Kalina's grave, the trio left the graveyard. Then, a figure wearing Enchanted Robes and a Bamboo Shade walked to Kalina's grave and placed a diamond choker on her grave.
"Soon, my love. We will be reunited at last. But I must rid the world of the malfested. It is Master Elysium's wish."
In Shanghai, Kin and Taki looked for an inn for the group to rest for the next two days. Or Kin mostly as Taki was hidden from the public eye, keeping watch in the shadows. This had been going for roughly an hour, and Kin's long patience was growing thin.
"Ahh. Why is it so hard to find a place to stay? Ugh, I knew I should've brushed up on my Chinese before coming into town."
He felt a sudden feeling in his pocket and instinctively grabbed whoever tried to silently rob him. "You're going to have to try harder if you want to rob me, Miser."
Kin turned to see Miser, a former associate. "Damn, I was silent too. Your skills are just as sharp as they were a year and a half ago."
"What do you want?"
"Oh, come on, Kin! Is that how you treat your partner in crime?"
"Former partner in crime. I'm not a part of the Phantom Force anymore. I refuse to work as a petty thief and gave up that profession a year and a half ago."
"But you were the only thief who could rival me besides Greed."
"One, I'm a better thief than you. Two, Greed was always prioritized killing over stealing. Stop bothering me, Miser. That part of my life is done."
"Oh, really? From what I've heard, you're currently working as a spy in Grandall, are you not?"
"I was but left a month ago. I travel with some friends now."
"You? Having friends outside the Force? Hahahaha, now that's a hoot. You converse with the poor and homeless?" Miser snickered at her sly insults.
Kin hushed her. "No, Miser. I converse with a Barbarian, a Ninja, a renounced duelist, and a teen. Sounds odd, but we click like a successfully picked door."
"But no one could share the bond we had, Kin. Remember? Your Dagger and my Katana? There was nothing we couldn't steal, no one to stand in our way! And you just gave up that life and left."
"What can I say? I'm a complicated man. Now leave me be. I'm trying to find a place to stay."
"There's an inn down the street that can hold up to seven people in a room. Try your luck there. I'll be seeing you around, Number 7," MIser giggled before turning to leave, but not before Kin stole her coin purse. He juggled it briefly.
"80,000 Gold. Come on, Miser. You're trailing behind your average..."
Taki appeared once Kin made his way into the inn. "Who was that?"
"Oh, you saw that? Ugh... that was Miser. I was once in a Thief Organization called the Phantom Force. Miser and I were partners... and lovers."
Taki briefly went wide-eyed but reverted. They were... lovers? Miser looked like a man! She hid her eyes with a horrifying aura. Taki could never see them being a couple. Things must've really gone south to cause Kin to leave.
"Why did she call you Number 7?"
"There were 10 members of the Force. Each number held some significance to the member. I was 7 because I was really lucky. Perhaps I'll tell you in detail later?"
He couldn't see it, but Taki had a slight smile hidden behind her mask. "I'd like that Th- Kin."
Kin blushed a little. 'Did she just call me by name?' He shook the thought away. "What say we get a room and find Spectre and the others?"
"Right, after you."
After purchasing a couple of rooms (With Miser's gold, no less), the duo went to find Xan, Baba, and Amy, who just walked into town.
"Just the people we were looking for," Kin remarked. "We found a place down the street and paid for two nights."
"Great, let's go and get situated. We did a lot of traveling. Less than I'd like, but it's getting late, and we need rest."
After finding their room, the group settled in - all except Kin and Xan. Despite the somewhat kind advances Taki pulled on him, Kin felt uneasy after his encounter with Miser. What about Xan, you say? Well, he's attempting to be aware of his surroundings. (a little too much so)
Eventually, Xan decided to go walk around (with Baba's approval and after being practically ordered to bring his weapons with him) the city to view the nighttime landscape. Kin decided to do the same (albeit after Xan left) to help clear his head. Shanghai's once lively streets looked ominous when being contrasted against the moonlight. Kin brought the 'Gold Mine' and his bombs in case- no when something goes wrong. Xan studied his surroundings as he walked around, making sure he was ready for conflict should it arise.
As soon as he left the inn, Xan held suspicions that he was being followed. Coming to the conclusion that words won't be enough, he went to a place where one would disturb the battle... Shun and Kalina's former home.
Xan stopped moving, the footsteps clear for his ears to detect. They grew faster and louder. Swiftly, Xan turned to block the strike of a woman! She held an umbrella that hid a blade on its bottom. She wore a beautiful kimono with red hearts all over her outfit. Her hair was done up similar to that of a Geisha, but they were customary to Japan! What was she doing in China, and why was she attacking Xan with such hatred and malice? He pushed her back and released his other sword from its scabbard before putting his mask on.
"Who are you?"
"My name is of no importance to you, swordsman. But you may know something that I wish to have. What do you know of a man named Heishiro Mitsurugi?"
Heishiro Mitsurugi? Xan remembered that name. A year and a half ago, Seong Mi-Na mistook him for a Heishiro Mitsurugi. He apparently killed a lot of Korean men and soldiers.
"Little besides him being an enemy of the Korean army. Rumors speculated that he was a samurai who wished for a worthy opponent. Still, that lifestyle makes sure that the one walking down that path makes plenty of enemies. Don't tell me that you think that I'm Mitsurugi?"
"And if I do?"
"Then I'd say you have the wrong swordsman. The path I walk prevents me from telling you my actual name, but know that I am not Mitsurugi. Besides, I don't know your name, so why should I give you mine?"
"You lie. You are the Black Dragon of Osaka, are you not? The Black Dragon's true name is Heishiro Mitsurugi! It has to be you! You killed my master, and he must be avenged!"
This is the second time this has happened!
At this point, Xan was convinced that Mitsurugi used his namesake to hide from people like this woman. Xan readied himself but decided this was a waste of time and opted to defeat her quickly.
Or so he thought.
This swordswoman had an aura of celerity, and strokes followed suit. Xan could barely get any offense in and was immediately put on the defensive, which eventually waned. He had to think fast to best his opponent or be killed before completing what he set out to do!
The one thought that pierced Xan's mind (besides the opponent's beauty) was how aggressive she was. He could perhaps use that to his advantage. Continuing to parry her assault until she over-committed to an act, Xan sacrificed his right Spadroon to cause her to rebound her last strike. He slashed vigorously at his opponent. The woman was practically blinded by the celerity of Xan's strokes.
She laid on the ground with her umbrella reduced to shreds, her sword arm under Xan's feet as her kimono was viciously ripped apart. Xan, who was sad that he had to lose one of his Spadroons, eventually let it go as he was still alive. Luckily for him, he didn't ruin the outfit he wore! Baba will be pleased with that.
Xan put those thoughts aside and focused on the woman who just attacked him. "You calm down, yet?"
"Spare me the mercy. Kill me so that I may be reunited with my master."
"Apparently, your rage has blinded you. I told you before that I am not Mitsurugi, nor did I kill your master. I was in the Himalayas a year and a half ago and haven't killed anyone. You have me mistaken."
"But the man in the Shade told me you were Mitsurugi!"
"Shade?"
"You're of Japanese descent and don't know what a Shade is?"
"Don't jest with me, lady. I know what a Shade is. I have some thinking to do, so while I tend to my thoughts, head inside the house and find something else to wear as I've ruined your Kimono."
"And how do you know that I won't attack you again?"
"Because you tired yourself out when you assaulted me. Besides, I already told you that I'm not the person you're after, so there's no reason for you to hate me still."
Xan sheathed his remaining Spadroon before helping the woman to her feet. After giving a quick up and down, she headed inside to get dressed. Yet Xan still felt a presence, one he knew exactly who it was.
"So, it was you, wasn't it, Shun? Ever since you started working for Elysium, you can't lower yourself to try and kill me personally?"
Shun revealed himself to be hiding behind the tree (haha) that grew in the front yard.
Shun Xiaolon, the Zealot of Soul Calibur
Immediately after becoming Elysium's champion, the duo traveled across the continents, terrorizing the common folk. Those who Elysium deemed unworthy were slain mercilessly by Shun's Staff, Soul Calibur itself. Getting rid of a Monk's robes and the Shade, Shun now sports a Dark Blue Enchanted Robe with boots to match. He now wears a Bamboo Shade. Elysium has all but corrupted his perception of spiritual alignment and now thinks he'll be the sword that purifies the world of the worthy. Simultaneously, he smites the "malfested" in the name of the Utopia of the Blessed that Elysium promised.
What lies in his soul is Betrayal.
"Of course. I am the herald of a new era. Why should I lower myself to fight low life like you?"
"You know, I never thought Elysium was so decrypted to resort to deceit. But Kalina is still dead, so those thoughts were put to rest."
"You shut your mouth about Kalina! She will return and help me create the world Elysium has promised the worthy."
"The worthy? More like the lucky. Elysium is only slaying people she doesn't favor, deems as an obstacle, or both. But to think that she wouldn't do it herself. Smells like fear to me."
"Quiet, imbecile!"
"Oh, you're using big words now. I'm scared!"
"Shut it, Xan! You may have bested the opponent I've selected, but that doesn't mean that this over. Far from it. You and Zasalamel will be nothing than specs of dust cleared from Elysium's path soon enough."
"Whatever. I won't attack you as you don't even have a weapon on you. But know this... You better not allow me to make more progress. If you do, I will be the biggest pain in the ass for Elysium. Also, if I find a way to resurrect Kalina, I'll expose you for the monster you truly are!"
Shun couldn't look angrier, Xan smirking at his enemy's despair. "Noted. Farewell."
He then vanished.
Finally, Xan now knows what Shun's been up to. Elysium is just using him as a crutch. As soon as his usefulness is expelled, he'll be removed. That's precisely what happened to Katti. Letting the thought go, Xan went to get his broken Spadroon, where he let the woman break it. He picked up the weapon in disappointment. The woman who found another kimono inside came back out. Her umbrella, however, was irreplaceable, so she kept it despite being badly damaged.
"Who was that?"
"My business is of no importance to you, swordswoman."
The woman could clearly tell she was being mocked, albeit playfully. She now believed her former opponent wasn't Mitsurugi and wished to know more about the man who bested her so easily.
"Well, color me curious. Your skills with a sword have garnered my attention. How about an exchange of information? I'll tell you of me if you tell me a little bit about yourself."
Xan was not moved by what was just said. He couldn't risk revealing himself to a stranger, or that's what he initially thought until he met Baba. Besides, if she had information on Mitsurugi, it would be helpful because he had a gut feeling they'll run into each other at some point.
"Fine. My name is Xan Shio. I'm from Osaka, Japan, and I was The Black Dragon of Osaka until I retired from dueling. Now, recent events have placed me in the crosshairs of Soul Edge and Soul Calibur."
That was something the woman was not expecting to hear. He's hated by both Soul Swords? This man and the people he traveled with were most likely the dangerous types. From what she had learned about Mitsurugi, who wanted to find Soul Edge and challenge it, there was a chance that these two would meet. She ultimately was pleased with what she learned from Xan.
"You may call me Setsuka. I... don't know where I was born. I was raised in Japan and taught the Shinden Tsushima-ryu Battōjyutsu by my caretaker before he died."
"I assume that Mitsurugi was the one who ended his life?"
Setsuka slowly nodded. "Now, I swear vengeance on Mitsurugi! He killed the only person who cared for me!"
"Shinden Tsushima-ryu Battōjyutsu? Edgemaster told me of a man who fought with that style! Said that he was wise beyond his years. He also talked of a young lady whom he was training. That was you?"
"You met with an Edgemaster?"
"Not met. Trained. And not with an Edgemaster. With Edgemaster as there is only one. But still, small world."
Setsuka nodded in agreement.
"But your master was not the vengeful type of person. He wouldn't want to pass down his style to someone who only lives to kill him! That will go against everything he stood for!"
"And what do you know about that!? He was the only person who cared for me when everyone and everything shunned me! Neglected me! He was the man I cared for! He was the man I... I loved."
"As a man who potentially ruined the lives of 100 people, I have experienced the consequences of tearing a loved one from another."
The conversation was cut short when the two heard metal clashing. Thinking it could be someone in the group, Xan decided to go check. "This can't be good. Goodbye, Setsuka. Remember, vengeance is not the answer."
He bowed before booking it for the town. Setsuka barely had time for a return bow before Xan disappeared.
Setsuka made the quick decision to follow him. 'He's an interesting man. Xan Shio, you've piqued my interest for the time being.'
Xan followed the sounds as they got progressively louder and saw Kin's blue coat. He couldn't see well from his vantage point but could tell that Kin was fighting two people. One had what looked like a spinning wing. He was handling himself pretty well, but Xan still decided to join and help, unsheathing his still intact Spadroon and rushed towards the three.
As Xan got closer, he got a view of the assailant who didn't have a wing. He had grey hair and a beard, wearing a brown vest and baggy pants with matching shoes. He had two kunai, one of which had two prongs. It made no difference to Xan.
For all he knew, they were trying to kill Kin!
He showed no mercy towards both attackers. Quickly deciding on an opponent, Xan went after the old man. He maliciously attacked the man who barely noticed and dodged backward. Kin pushed Miser off to allow for a quick breather.
"Spectre! You were out too?"
"I was thinking about things, but you were being attacked! I think this deserves an explanation."
"These two were my former partners when I was a thief. Miser's the girl who's obsessed with money for the wrong reasons, and Greed's the old man who has a killing problem."
"Only when I can line my pockets."
"We offered you a chance to join the Force again, Kin, and you denied. We then opted to kill you."
"Yes, but we never expected help to show. I thought you said Kin didn't have friends, Miser."
"I thought he didn't!"
"A fatal error on your part."
That was all Xan said before assaulting Greed, a decent fighter. (or so he thought) Xan easily outclassed him multiple times over. Even with only one sword, he overpowered Greed and cornered him.
"What are you?"
"Call me Spectre, but that's all you get, murderer. What should we do with them, Kin?"
"Kill them. The world is better off without them!"
"Get up, Greed. I'll at least give you a fair shot."
Greed saw an opportunity to strike, with Xan clearing the distance. He got and dashed to try to stab Xan in the back. Little did he know, Xan predicted this and quickly turned around and stabbed Greed in the Kidney. Blood poured from his mouth like a waterfall, dropping his kunai as the life started to leave his body. Xan pulled him off his blade and tossed Greed aside as he rushed to help Kin with Miser.
Miser was arguably worse than Greed in combat terms. She preferred leaving those alive due to her developed ego as a thief. She was quickly overpowered by the two, unarmed on her back. But before the duo could finish her off, she created a small fire to escape. After putting the flame out before it grew worse, they used some of the fire to burn Greed's corpse.
Setsuka, who watched and heard the whole thing, was baffled by Xan's swordsmanship. He was aggressive with two swords but articulate, precise, and reserved with one. It was clear that he was better off using one blade rather than two. She even saw a glimmer of red in his eyes, like he was possessed by something corrupt. The duo stood to watch for a few more minutes but eventually relaxed. It was then that Xan asked about the two.
"Miser and Greed are part of a group of thieves called The Phantom Force, and they are the opposite of the Manjitou."
"The Manjitou? The group who stole from the rich and gave to the poor?"
"Yeah. I was a member of this group a year and a half ago. Over time, I grew to despise this line of work and the people around it, so I decided to leave. Most of the group didn't take it too nicely. Greed thought I was going to betray the Force and join the Manjitou. He refused to let me live after I left and apparently convinced Miser to help him. Plus, he must have had consent from the leader to kill a former member. I couldn't believe they found me so quick, but Greed's tracking ability is unparalleled."
"But Miser escaped."
"Don't worry about her. I'll deal with her should she show her face again. Greed was better than her in terms of fighting ability, but he's dead now. It's getting late. We need to get some rest."
"We're not leaving China until the weapons are finished, but now I hope they'll be done faster."
"Why's that?"
Xan revealed the Spadroon that he broke after fighting Setsuka at Kalina's house.
"How'd this happen?"
"I'll tell you on the way back. Come on."
As they walked back to the inn, Xan explained his fight with Setsuka and the misconception of him being Heishiro Mitsurugi.
"I've heard of Mitsurugi, a talented swordsman who wants to fight Soul Edge as no one else seems to be worthy of his time. But if he's using your name when dueling people, then you and he will eventually run into each other."
"Hopefully sooner than later. I want to know why he's been using my moniker."
"After we deal with the problems we have now."
"I don't know. I'm tempted to go back to Japan to find this Mitsurugi person and shame him."
That was something Setsuka didn't want to hear. She would be the person to kill Mitsurugi! He killed her master! But she couldn't stop Xan if he set his mind to it.
"Please don't. Baba will be furious with me, and she'll throw everything to find you. Do you really want to risk confronting an angry Baba?"
Xan could only think of what Baba would do if she was angry. Probably something along the lines of knocking civilians out, maybe throw someone in a stream or upend a small building. That was something Xan never thought of, the mere possibility enough to rattle his spine.
"Maybe it can wait."
"Indeed."
The duo returned to the inn and went to bed.
The following day, the group again split off, Xan finding himself sitting in the inn's lounge planning on getting to Greece and visiting the one Taki and Toyotomi mentioned. In the middle of thinking, a hand rested on his shoulder. Looking up, it was Setsuka, her old kimono sewn back together as she now wore it. Her Paper Umbrella was also fixed as she sat next to him.
"Ah, it's you."
"So... should I call you Spectre or Xan, hmm?"
"Spectre is fine for now. I'm trying to stay hidden, and that means unless we're in a safe spot, you should never call me by my name."
"That's fair. You know, I followed you into town after our fight last night."
Xan raised an eyebrow. "Oh, really? And what did you see?"
Setsuka gave Xan a stern gaze, to which he remained unfazed. "I saw that you were holding back against me, using two weapons instead of one. It was like watching a different person than my opponent last night."
"Did you know we had a spectator when we fought? The person who watched is an enemy of mine, and I didn't want him to see everything I can do. Yes, I held back, but what's in the past stays there. If anything, I hope you learned something from our scuffle last night."
"What are you talking about? My swordplay was perfect. You simply outfought me."
"As much as I would like to agree with you, that's not the case. You were too aggressive, and I played to your weakness. Look at where that got you - a destroyed Kimono, Umbrella, and you meeting the cold nighttime dirt. Vengeance has clouded your mind and how you fight. If that continues, you'll never defeat Mitsurugi."
Setsuka looked bewildered! Xan ran her down about her weakness without hesitation.
"Sorry, did I go too far? Training with Edgemaster nonstop for a year and a half can do that to people."
"No... You are correct; vengeance has shrouded my perception and swordsmanship. But vengeance is all I know! And it's something I will not easily cast aside."
Xan started to think until a solid idea popped in his head.
"How about using vengeance as a motivation to train? It will give you a reason to improve your skills. However, after you avenge your master, what will you do after?"
Setsuka didn't have an answer, never thinking of her future after attaining vengeance. "I don't know. Maybe I'll wander. Like you did."
"That may be so. But wandering will only do so much." Xan placed a hand on her leg, not noticing Setsuka jumping slightly from the action. "Then again, your master never wanted you to avenge him in the first place. Perhaps he wanted you to live your life in happiness."
"Don't play nice with me, Swordsman. I also heard of the possibility that you may return to Japan to confront him about falsely using your moniker. We may be acquainted now, but if you decide to pursue him, don't expect to do it by your lonesome."
The two were staring each other down, the tension thick as the blood that flowed in their veins boiled.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means that if you go back to Japan, I will travel with you, whether you like it or not. Besides, I'll have a sparring partner to help with my swordsmanship."
"Well, if that's the case... then I'm definitely not going back to Japan."
Setsuka playfully pushed him away, releasing a small laugh. "You tease. What, you refuse to fight with one sword for the time being?"
"That, and I'm having new weapons made for a friend and I. So I'm stuck in Shanghai for another day while the weapons are being made."
Setsuka shortly after got up and gathered her belongings. "As much as I would love to keep you entertained, I have other things I must do."
That was sarcasm, Xan could tell from her voicings as he playfully shooed her away.
"I'll see you around, Spectre."
Like an enigma, Setsuka was gone with the wind. Xan had a feeling this wouldn't be the last time the two met.
Shortly after Setsuka's leaving, Baba practically burst in, frantically looking for Xan, with Amy following soon after. She calmed herself after finding him.
"Spectre! I heard that a black male with a white outfit was around town!"
"What!? Where is he?"
"I don't know! But Taki is searching the area. If we can corner him, we could have more insight on what the hell he's doing!"
"I wasn't expecting to hear something along those lines. I invite it regardless."
The trio patiently waited in their room until Kin and Taki arrived. "We found him, Dragon."
"Where is he?"
"Currently inside the clock tower out of town. He requested your presence... alone."
"Why does he want me alone?"
"I don't know, Dragon. But I hope you're smart enough to know this is a trap."
"Oh, I know. That's why Baba is coming with, and she's going stand watch outside."
"Good choice, Spectre! I'll split anyone in two if they get in the way!"
"Are you sure about this, Big Brother?"
"Don't worry about it, Amy. Baba and I can handle this."
Xan started to stand, Baba following suit after. "I want you three to watch over the city while we're at the Clock Tower in case anything happens."
"Will do. We'll keep a safe watch over the town. Right, Taki?"
"Right. Best of luck and return to us in one piece, Dragon."
"We will."
After a collective nod, the duo was off. As soon as they were out of town, Baba struck up a conversation to break the silence. "What do you think he'll want of you?"
"No clue. He's probably going to try and kill me. I don't know how strong he is, so I might be marching to my death."
"It troubles me that you can say that so casually. You will make it through this. You promised Taki! She'll find a way to bring you back just so she can berate you for breaking it."
"Yeah, you're right."
"Anything is possible, Spectre. We have faith in you. So you will survive... Right?"
"Right."
"Good. Now get your ass inside."
The duo arrived at the clock tower; Xan was intrigued by these dwellings and how they were made. How could people lift up these giant cogs and gears and place them in the right spots? He constantly pondered these things whenever encountering one. Now, he would possibly have his most challenging battle inside one. He entered and eventually found himself in the tower's center.
Soon enough, he heard mock applause followed by a voice.
"You never cease to amaze me, Xan Shio. I had a hunch you survived your encounter with Elysium. Though you should be dead, you still pursue the swords? I applaud your conviction!"
Zasalmel then showed himself. "But allow me to warn you again. Do not involve yourself with that sword if you wish to live. I shall have to kill you if you continue."
"I refuse. The Swords have too much to answer for! I will have peace on this Earth! And if that means running through you, so be it!"
Silence... besides the sound of footsteps in the distance and the spinning gears.
The tension rose, Xan's hairs standing on end as he felt the most acute movement. He then heard the sound of something flying, turning to see a gear flying straight at him! Xan barely had time to dodge before it could crush him. After standing back up, Zasalamel jumped down, and after a brief staredown, spoke.
"You're better than I expected. Your skills are quite impressive."
Xan's attitude swiftly became snarky in his response. "So? I wonder what will happen next?"
Weapons were brandished, tension at an all-time high. Nothing but the Clocktower sounds in their ears, the battle began.
Xan vs. Zasalamel! Round One! Fight!
Xan readied his remaining Spadroon and got in his fighting stance. Zasalamel lifted his Giant Scythe and pointed at him.
"No second Spadroon?"
"Due to recent events, the other broke."
Xan didn't wait for a response. He rushed towards Zasalamel and struck downwards. Zasalamel easily dodged while attempting to ground Xan by slamming his Scythe on the cog they were fighting on. Xan escaped by jumping backward, then ran forward and started attacking with precision, barely grazing Zasalamel's cheek. Zasalamel then used the Scythe's sharp end to stab Xan in the stomach. Xan luckily retreated before he dug in deeper.
From where they stood, it seemed like a stand-still.
Zasalamel was the one approached this time. He performed a somersault with his Scythe in hand, becoming a pseudo rotating blade. Xan instinctively blocked above him and parried the blow, but the force caused him to fall. He got back up in time for another block as Zasalamel immediately attacked him as soon as he got up. Zasalamel was slowly starting to overpower him, so he pushed him off.
"You're putting up a better fight than I expected, Xan Shio!"
"Is this a game to you? You're holding back, aren't you!?"
"Quite the perceptive question. So, what if I am?"
"You're toying with me. What do you want!?"
"I want to feed you information. But before doing so, I wanted to test your resolve."
"You killed my ally to awaken Soul Calibur, plunging the world further into the shitter. And now you wish to help me? What are you trying to pull? What do you wish to gain from having both swords running amok slaughtering the innocent?"
"I wish... For death."
Xan gave Zasalamel a screwy look. "You're clearly joking, right?"
"I don't jest swordsman. If you allow it, I'll share my story with you."
Xan sheathed the now nearly broken Spadroon and motioned for Zasalamel to continue.
"I come from a tribe who focused on keeping Soul Calibur sealed, as we knew of the potential it could spread. We were quite adept in the arcane arts. I was one of the most talented Mages in their tribe. In my life, I even found the secret to immortality and used the spell on myself. But using spells like those weren't allowed in the tribe, so I was expelled."
Xan remained silent.
"I didn't care at the time. I would outlive them all anyway. But after dying and being resurrected constantly, I couldn't take it anymore! I kept trying to kill myself in many different ways. Eventually, I realized that only the Soul Swords can give me true death. So I brought Nightmare back from the dead and have awakened Soul Calibur. In the end, I will absorb the presence of them both, and it will finally give me a true death!"
Xan, unfazed by the story, was grateful for being told everything. "So, why spare me?"
"Despite our end goals being different, we both need the Swords around. You just need them in a weakened state. The path to our end road couldn't be anymore similar. Your motivation is noble, and if our goals didn't intersect, I'd even help you. If you want both swords to be sealed off, then you must weaken and then send them to the Lost Cathedral."
"Where is this Lost Cathedral?"
"You'll know when it's time to go there."
This had to be a ruse. The Lost Cathedral? He has never even heard of the place before!
"How did you know that I was even in China anyway?"
"Unless you were with the Old Man, I've been tracking you. If I couldn't find you, then you had to be with Edgemaster. It was rather simple. I just followed wherever there was trouble. You attract problems like Soul Edge attracts warriors."
"You've been following me since I left the Proving Grounds? Did you send the Lizardmen at the Villa?"
"That was Inferno. He is lazy, so much that he sends his cronies to retrieve souls for him."
"Why are you even helping me?"
"If you and your group were to fail, my plans would become much more difficult. And whether you believe it or not, I could say the same if I were to perish."
"I thought you said you were immortal?"
"I am. But it takes a while for me to actually resurrect into someone else. After you receive your new weapons, I suggest you speed down to Greece. A servant of Inferno will most likely make trouble for your new ally."
"Will do. If you're even telling the truth."
"I am. It's risky to be helping you as it puts my plan at risk. But, if you didn't help, you'll still be helping me by staying out of my way. Best of luck, Xan Shio."
And like that, Zasalamel vanished. It was a lot of information to take in and think about.
Taki then surfaced soon after Zasalamel's leaving. "You think he's telling the truth?"
"I don't know, Taki. I think we should keep what he said in mind and keep moving to Greece. We have to get there as fast as possible. If what he said is true, then expect trouble when we get to Greece."
"Noted, Dragon. And good job on keeping up with Zasalamel. He was no pushover, I bet."
"He wasn't. He was holding back, and I was still barely keeping up."
"You'll improve with time. Come, let us head back into town."
The trio went back into town, which wasn't attacked, and headed to sleep.
The next day, the group headed to the Weapon Shop to pick up Xan's and Kin's weapons. Hualin greeted the group as usual. What they weren't expecting was Cepheus to be standing next to her.
"Good morning, everyone!"
"Cepheus! What are you doing down here?"
"I'm here to give you your weapons, of course. I'm the one who made your swords after all."
"Huh? I thought you retired from being a blacksmith?"
"Being trained by Edgemaster has its perks."
"I was trained by Edgemaster too."
"Sorry, Kin. You should've said something."
"Ahhhhh, shit!'
"Hualin! Give Kin his new Dagger."
"Right! Here you go! The Blue Rose!"
Hualin held out a black Butterfly Knife with Blue Rose designs on the outside. Kin took and unsheathed it, showing off his knife work as he did so.
"Alright! Thank you, Hualin!"
"You're welcome, Kin. The least I can do."
"Now for your weapons, Xan."
Cepheus kneeled down to reveal two rather long katanas in each hand, one of them touching the floor!
"What are these? I've never seen Katanas this long before!"
"Ahh, yes. The one touching the floor is a Nodachi. The other is an O-Katana. There's a 2-centimeter difference between the two. I also have one more sword to give you. Wait here while I get it."
He handed the Katanas to Xan and left for a short time until he returned with a unique-looking sword. "And this completes the weapons I have made for you."
"What's this?"
"It's a Shamshir. Its blade is curved, made to land attacks on slippery targets."
"Thank you, Cepheus. You've outdone yourself with these. Now, how will I carry these?"
"Oh! Use this harness I made specifically for those."
"Thanks again, Cepheus. And you too, Hualin."
"Think nothing of it, boys. If you ever want those blades refined, don't hesitate to come back. Hualin and I will do it free of charge!"
"We definitely will, huh Spectre?"
"Indeed. We'll be seeing you later, Cepheus."
After they left the Weapon Shop, the group booked it for the nearest portal to the Proving Grounds. They said a quick hello to Edgemaster and Katti before taking the portal to Greece.
"Taki, you know where her house is?"
"Yes, Dragon. It's on top of that little hill over there. Follow me."
Taki guided the group to the Swordswoman's house, but she had a feeling something was wrong. She quickened the pace, the group following suit. When they finally arrived at her house, a little boy came out and ran up to Taki in a panic.
"Aunt Taki! It's bad! A bad person took Mommy and Pyrrha!"
"Aunt Taki?"
"I'm friends with his Mother. Patroklos, where did this person take your Mother?"
Sniffling, Patroklos regulated his breath slightly spoke again. "She took them both to the shrine! Please, you have to save them both! Please, Aunt Taki!"
"Dragon. We're going to the Eurydice Shrine. Everyone, watch the house while we're gone. Come on, Dragon. Let's go."
"Right. Lead the way."
The two ran for the shrine as fast as they could. Taki struck a conversation with Xan on the way. "It turns out that Zasalamel was correct, Dragon."
"I noticed. You think that means what he said about the swords is also true?"
"At this point, it would be wise to believe in that too. The wound Zasalamel gave after you fought yesterday has healed, has it?"
"It has. What, you want me to do most of the fighting?"
"My apologies, Dragon. But Sophitia and Pyrrha's safety is my top priority at the moment. I have the utmost confidence that you can deal with the assailant."
"Then go on ahead and see if you can snatch them from her before I get there. I'll be with you shortly."
Taki nodded and vanished. Xan went to unsheathe his swords but realized that dual-wielding with two long swords wouldn't work. He decided to use the O-Katana for this fight. It came out effortlessly as he briefly scanned it. The blade shined like a beacon, sleek but had weight. He was awestruck by how Cepheus did this good a job. After his arrival, Xan set his sights on the shrine and noticed Taki had Sophitia and Pyrrha in her care.
"Taki-san!"
"Dragon! You made it right on time. There is the perpetrator behind Sophitia's kidnapping. Kill her. We can't have her escaping."
"Right. Wait here."
He walked towards his opponent, a girl who had green hair with a matching outfit. She held a Ring Blade that hung around her soldier. Upon seeing Xan, her eyes widened.
"Ohhhh! You look strong! Very strong!"
"Yeah, and?"
"You have a nice body! Can I see it for a second? I wonder if Soul Edge would like it?"
"Like hell, he'll have my body, girl."
"You don't have a choice in the matter."
Tira rushed at Xan with a playful yet deadly aura. He held his ground and effortlessly blocked her stroke, and pushed her off. She advanced again with renowned aggression. Xan stopped each attack until he swiftly dodged her final maneuver, ending up behind her. He slashed at her back, but Tira jumped behind him and tried to hit him from behind. Xan blocked the attack without looking and retaliated by giving her a stiff kick in the stomach, briefly knocking her down. When Tira got up, she started to giggle uncontrollably!
"What's so funny?"
"Your anger. It's glaring at me, and I can't help but be attracted to it! Play with me some more! Please, Master!"
'This girl has problems,' Xan thought in his head. 'Her fighting style is extremely unconventional! I guess it has to do with her acrobatics. Alright, I'll attack her legs. She can't jump around if she can't move.'
With a plan of attack, Xan was the one who approached. Feigning an attack at her chest, Tira blocked her chest just like Xan predicted. He used the momentum to land a vicious hit on her left leg. He attacked, slashed, and landed another vicious slash on her right leg on the way back up. He continued this until he stood back up completely. A handful of wounds on the assailant's leg resulted from the attack, resulting in her inability to move with much agility. Desperate, Tira attempted to attack again but was thwarted when Xan viciously kicked one of her leg wounds. She fell on her stomach as Xan stabbed her in the back, thrusting the O-Katana deep into her spine. Before he could do more damage to her vertebrae, the injured Sophitia spoke up.
"Spare her."
"What?"
"Are you sure, Sophitia?"
"Yes. Please spare Tira."
"Dragon... Let her go."
"You sure, Taki-san?"
"Don't make me repeat myself."
Xan released the O-Katana from her spine. Before making his way to Taki, Sophitia, and little Pyrrha, he gave the assailant a stiff kick in the jaw, blood spewing out of her mouth. He sheathed his O-Katana and walked over to the girls. Sophitia was now sitting by herself, holding an incapacitated Pyrrha. She looked sickly, her breathing slightly syncopated and unrhythmic.
Xan kneeled down. "What's wrong with her?"
"Tira said that Pyrrha has a fragment of Soul Edge inside her. If the blade were to be destroyed, she would die."
Even children were getting afflicted with diseases of Inferno's creations.
Xan shook his head before grabbing Sophitia's hand, looking her in the eyes. "I think I may be able to cure your daughter."
Sophitia and Taki both stared with wide eyes as Xan pulled out the Dvapara Yuga from his coat pocket. Its blue glow shined violently.
"Can you recall how large the fragment was?"
"It was as big as her finger."
"Okay. I'll use the stone to cure Pyrrha's affliction. Then I will give you a piece to make a necklace for her to protect her from the sword's influence."
Sophitia nodded as Xan held the stone against Pyrrha's chest. The glow became near blinding as the Holy Stone went to work. Soon enough, her breathing slowed but regulated, implying she was simply sleeping. The stone stopped glowing, meaning the curing was finished. Xan breathed a sigh of relief. Taki gave Xan a reassuring nod, Sophitia shedding a tear at the selfless act. She stood up with Pyrrha still in her arms.
"May I have the name of my daughter's savior?"
Taki gave him another reassuring nod. "Go ahead, Dragon."
Xan bowed and removed his mask so Sophitia could see his face. "You may call me Xan; Xan Shio."
Sophitia walked up and kissed him on the cheek.
"Xan Shio... I thank you for saving my daughter. You may call me Sophitia Alexandra."
"Yes, Mrs. Alexandra."
Sophitia giggled at the formality. "Oh, dear. I am Mrs. Alexandra, am I? But for you, Sophitia will do just fine."
Xan nodded in agreement. "Let's back home. Patroklos and Rothion must be worried. Follow me."
Sophitia started to leave, but before Taki and Xan left they looked at where Tira was. She was gone.
"Oh, that can't be good."
"We'll deal with her later, Dragon. For now, let's follow Sophitia."
Xan nodded and headed for Sophitia's house with Taki in tow.
