Zephyr sat on a picnic blanket side by side with Rose. They had just enjoyed a romantic meal together, and now we're just sitting down and enjoying each other's company.
"Zephyr, can I ask you a question?" He looked over to his mistress. Something seemed to be upsetting Rose greatly.
"Anything dear." Despite his permission, she seemed to have a hard time getting her question out.
"Do you... Do you think that this is the kind of life our child should have?"
"Being raised as the hair of a mighty interdimensional empire of darkness, ya sounds pretty good. Considering the other options out there. Do you not think so?"
"No, I don't. Being raised around bloodthirsty minions, perverted succubi, dark magic beyond the understanding of ordinary folk. I can see where you're coming from, but please tell me you can see what I'm talking about." Zephyr posed, thinking hard about what Rose was suggesting.
"And what do you want us to do about it? My kingdom is still going to need and hair, and if I crown someone else overlord, they might see the little one as a threat to their rule and try to have us killed."
"I don't know what to do, I just... Want what's best for our child. Just promise me you're going to think about it at the very least."
"I will Rose, that I-"
"Sorry to disturb you, dark one. But the Ruborian Desert is bristling with evil energy. I believe that this might be that final act the creature from the Golden Hills abyss was talking about!" Zephyr groaned at Gnarl's interruption, only just holding back from cursing him out.
"Gather the troops into Ruboria. If what the girls say about whatever that thing was is true, then we need to get at it with full force." He then stood up, helping Rose to her feet as well. She gave him a disapproving glare.
"We are going to continue this conversation when you get back!"
"Don't you worry, love. We will."
...
Zephyr looked upon his gathered army with pride. Black dragon knights, all wearing fire armor made with one of the molds found in the Golden Hills abyss and armed with life-stealing swards made with the other. Demons armed with axes of confusion and armored in minion empowered Infernium armor to supplement his ground forces, along with the dwarven zombies. In the skies above him, succubi and other flying demons made up the air force, led by the succubi honor guard, aside from Jill. She was ordered to remain with Rose. Zephyr thought about inviting the elves along for this conquest, but he found them to be unnecessary. And then there was his personal horde of fifty minions, all armed and armored in fully upgraded Infernium, all snarling and ready for blood. He needed to use the abyss stones he gathered previously to open the abyss. But, once it was open, more power emanated behind it than the other four combined.
"My warriors! Today, we march into the lair of a mighty foe! One that may or may not be the end of us! But this rat bastard has, on four other occasions, attempted to invade my dark domain, so we answer its challenge with blood! Or whatever the hell it's gonna bleed when we're done with it!"
"For the overlord!" His army cheered in unison as they charged in behind him. What they found on the other side was truly something to behold. Wraiths as far as the eyes could see, gunners, ax-men, reapers, and more of the standard swards-men than he could even count. Words fail to describe the carnage that took place in that abyss. Black knights slashed down skeletal warriors that burst into flames whenever they struck them, reapers dueling with demon warriors that towered over lesser men. She-demons and winged horrors getting gunned down as they dived into the ranks of the marksmen, the ones who make it wreaking havoc among the enemy ranks. And leading the dark host against the army of the condemned, the overlord himself, his minions at his side, bringing death and despair like a great storm. After what felt like an eternity of chaos and death, the wraiths stopped coming. Zephyr and his host were victorious! He would have soaked in the glory as he stood atop a mountain of dead, but then Gnarl had to start babbling.
"You mad it, sire! Good, good! It's so tiresome to have to scrap up your overlord when he's splattered all over an evil abyss."
"And just like that, the moment is ruined. Thank you, Gnarl. Ok, everyone, secure this location, and take a quick breather before we charge forward!" The army did as they were ordered. Black priests healed and resurrected those they could, and the members of the invasion force were able to set up a perimeter. After about half an hour, the army moved out. Wraith resistance was just as fierce going forward as it was when they first arrived. Until at last, they came across an obstacle that they couldn't just bash through.
"Oh dear, it's a labyrinth! If you see any rosy cheeked maidens whining about goblin kings or if anything starts singing... KILL THEM!"
"That is... Very specific... Ok, moving on." Zephyr entered the maze, soon found that he needed to light people on fire to clear obstacles, something he was more than comfortable doing. The labyrinth itself was not actually very complicated. Soon Zephyr found himself at the last barrier in his way, a wall that was made out of abyssal stone and a familiar face.
"You! I know you! You took her, my little sugarplum! Come here, I'll tear you apart with my teeth!"
"Well, if it isn't our old friend Khan! Looks like his anger had literally blown him to pieces." Zephyr didn't even try to hold back the loud, almost unhinged sounding, laughter that the sight of his former teammate like that inspired.
"Well, well, well, if it isn't Khan, the warrior! After bragging about being able to bash down any wall in his path, ended up one in hell! Like your new job, Gigantor?"
"DON'T CALL ME GIGANTOR! Nobody calls me that! The last person that called me that I made sure didn't come back!"
"Oh, trust me, you really didn't." The look on Khan's face when he took his helmet off was just precious to Zephyr. A wicked smirk rolled up his cheek as he walked closer to the crippled giant.
"What's the matter, Khan? Are you afraid of ghosts?"
"Zephyr... ZEPHYR! I'm going to kill you!" Khan said as he started to wiggle and tried to break free from the wall he was a part of to attack Zephyr.
"Good luck with that Gigantor, bring in the bombs!" A few well-placed explosions later, and Zephyr soon had a clear path for his army to march through, and shortly they occupied the thresh hold of the master of hells very lair.
"It's the temple of the forgotten god, sire! So that's who's been pulling strings around here. Looking back on it, I think the ladies have been saying it was him the whole time!"
"We have, but he was cursed, so every mortal who thinks about him forgets him. We have been over this three or four times now. The curse should be weakening the closer to him you get." Infernia said in a very exasperated tone, and now that Zephyr can remember all the times she told him about it, he couldn't blame her.
"So, how do we get past all this then? We can't kill him if we can't get in, can we?"
"Seems the switches are on a timer. Bloody gods can't have a door knocker and a welcome mat!?"
"Like we don't have enough hands for that? Get at those switches, boy's!" Zephyr's minions rushed and pushed down all the switches, to Gnarl's amusement.
"Now, time to put the hurtin' on that meddling deity!"
"You took the words right out of my mouth, Gnarl! Succubi, knight captains, and greater demons with me! Everyone else, secure this abyss and make it ready for the victory party!" A great cheer rang out from the conquering army as Zephyr and his personal host entered the temple of the forgotten god. When they entered the abyss, the first thing they saw was a minion wearing a jester outfit.
"Oh hey, I didn't know minions went to hell. Making you dress like that is just cruel!"
"You seriously don't remember me!? I am the jester of the dark tower! I sided with Eraburus when he turned on you! Nothing!?"
"Nope, not a thing." Before the jester could say another word, the entire temple began to tremble with the rage of the forgotten one. All exits ceiling up for the final battle.
"Do you know what it is like to be forgotten, sub-creature? Once my name was spoken in whispers, it brought dread to this land. Now that petulant goddess wishes my name lost to the mists of time! No more! I will awaken their nightmares... Their darkest memories. They will remember me, and they will remember what they feared!" The forgotten god screamed in rage as he erupted from the pit in the middle of the room. His monstrous form striking fear into the hearts of all who stood before him. All but one.
"Are you done? Because I can wait if you still have some more crying to do, you little crybaby! Put up your claws and show me what godhood is worth!" And with that brave taunt, the battle began. And it became obvious that Zephyr out of his league. Their weapons did little to nothing against the massive divine beast, but its claws and tusks did a number on both Zephyr's minions and his commando squad, half of whom were already dead ten minutes into the fight.
"Are you trying to amuse me with your squashy little army?"
"Are you trying to impress me with your ugly ass face mask? Seriously is that part of the curse, or bad fashion sense?!" The forgotten one roared in rage and rammed his face at Zephyr, taking down a support beam and getting his back struck with an infernal rock. The way he screamed in pain made it clear that that was the only real way to kill him. Looking at his remaining knights and succubi, they knew what to do.
"So what's going to be your plan if you do get out of the abyss, just go around killing people? You do know the survivors will just think it was a freak gust of wind that did it, right?" One of the knight captains yelled from behind one of the pillars, getting the forgotten god's wrathful attention.
"With each death, they shall remember me!" He then rammed his head at the knight, taking down another support pillar and getting more rocks in the back.
"So what, you think people with just snap out of it if you kill enough of them? Not very smart boss. I think it will take more than that to lift your curse!" Infernia taunted, making her old boss even madder.
"My name will be whispered... My name will be screamed!" The forgotten got then did the exact same thing again. Zephyr genuinely could not believe a god could be that stupid, but he did think it would explain why he lived in such a silly world.
"Man with a temper like that, it's hard to believe that the mother goddess didn't curse you a long time ago!"
"YOU TRY LIVING WITH A GODDESS!" The dumb bastard then took out the last pillar Zephyr was standing next to. Bringing another massive rock down, stabbing him in the back, and pinning him in murdering range of Zephyr.
"No... No! They must... Remember."
"You hear that? That would be the winds of change, and I don't hear your name being carried on the breeze, buddy. It looks like the misses gets her wish!" Zephyr then shoved his hands into the mouth of the forgotten god's mouth, using all of his most potent spells to rost, zap, and liquefy the so-called god from the inside out. Zephyr turned his back on the now-empty golden armor, but was stopped in his tracks when the forgotten one started talking to him, despite being very dead.
"Your death... Was supposed to free me! You want the Infernal Abyss? Take it! May it be your eternal prison!" With the forgotten god's last breath, all of the abyss began to tremble and fall apart around them.
"Well, fuck. Everyone, evacuate the abyss! Gnarl, can you do anything with the tower heart to keep this place from crumbling?!"
"Hello? Hello, sire? Are you there... I'm getting some kind of interference. If you can hear me, master, get to the abyss gate!"
"FUCK MY LIFE!" Zephyr screamed as he ran as fast as he could. The entire abyss around him seemed to be crumbling in the absence of the forgotten god. What once was a well-organized army of proud warriors was now a back of fleeing screaming cowards. Zephyr would have been ashamed of his people, if he was not just as scared as they were, just as desperate to get out in time. He could see the abyss gate, but any hope of escape was absent, as the jester stood on the portal. The little shit fliped Zephyr off before disappearing. The moment he did, the gate crumbled to ash. The dest settled as the world around him stopped shacking, and Zephyr was left to look upon the remains of the gate in horror. A tapping on his shoulder from Impella alerted Zephyr to the truly massive force of wraiths just standing behind them. The skeletal army could wipe them out easily, but then the unexpected happened, they bowed. They were hissing in their infernal tongue a strange chant.
"Impella... What are they saying?"
"They are chanting... The old god is dead. Hail the new one... Hail the Infernal Lord..."
...
Gnarl was sitting alone on the hillside, looking out into the sunset, babbling to himself mostly.
"I have seen evil masters come and go. Explosioded. Disintegrated. Immolated... Even one time devoured by a giant weasel! But I admit, I had a soft spot for this last one. Ah, he may still find a way to escape the Infernal Abyss, but... We may have to find a new master. But then, Rose might have the solution to that problem gestating inside of-" Just then, Jill flew in. A crazed and panicked look on her face, as she franticly looked around.
"Have you seen Rose anywhere!?"
"Not since I told her about the master's fate, don't tell me you've-" Jill then picked up Gnarl by his moldy and dusty robes and brought his face uncomfortably close to hers.
"Rose has run away! She's taken enough gold to buy three castles and just fucking vanished!"
Calm down, you hysterical whe-" Jill then threw Gnarl to the ground, her left eye twitching as she loomed over him.
"Don't you tell me to calm down, you fossilized piece of shit! Zephyr entrusted me with looking after his lover and unborn child, and I failed! Gather as many knights as you can, I will summon all the demons under my command, and we will hunt that cunt down!"
"As much as I am proud of your dedication to your duty, there are some problems with that plane. One, ever since Zephyr was lost to the abyss, every priest with an ounce of ambition has declared themselves his one true prophet. And the entire dark domain has been in civil war for the past three days. Two, the minion tribes are already scattering to find a new master, I can keep the browns in line, but the rest are getting ready to fuck off as we speak."
"Then gather up all the browns and help me look for Zephyr's heir! The sooner we get Rose and her kid back, the sooner we can get you little rats a new master!" Gnarl grumbled and got up off of the ground, only dusting himself off as much as was necessary.
"Fine, fine. We do need the wenches little spawn if where to keep things on track. We might be able to get the more fanatical members of the cult to follow us as well."
"Good. Call it a crusade if you have to. Just get us as much help as you can." Jill then flew off as fast as she could. In contrast, Gnarl took his sweet time getting his side of the preparations ready. As good as it would be to get Zephyr's hair as their new master, the minion master was not that picky.
