Chapter 51: Telling his parents
When Billy and Juliet walked inside the house they immediately noticed it was just his parents, so Billy asked. "Where is Aunt Stephanie and Uncle Nick?"
Sara replied to her son, still looking very worried. "They went home, and your brother went with them. We know that something happened with that phone call and they wanted us to have privacy to go over it."
He nodded in understanding before asking again after clearing his throat. "Did you call grandma back?"
"We did, but while she reassured us that the family is really ok, she did hint that this was your news to share."
He could see the pleading in her eyes, not only wanting to know what made him act the way he did, but to protect him if she could, that's how she's always been to him. Obviously, both of his parents have been that way, but there was just something extra powerful about a mother's love.
Thinking that almost made him tear up again, for multiple reasons, but they were stopped at least for the moment because he knew things were about to get seriously emotional.
After one more nod, he looked down at his phone, seeing his son as his heart raced, then after he felt Juliet's hand slip into his for support/comfort, he lifted his head up, took a breath and walked up to his parents slowly, almost feeling like he was walking to the principle's office, a feeling he's actually had a few times growing up, and really did happen once. But after that one look at his parent's disapproving faces, he never did anything that led to the principles office again, at least in the negative way. In fact, he tried to never disappoint them again, never wanting to see that look or have that feeling ever again, he just hopes that what he's about to tell them wasn't the biggest disappointment to them of all time.
Once he stopped in front of his parents, both of them could see so many emotions in his eyes, and it was killing them that they couldn't do anything about it, especially not knowing what was going on in the first place, so Sara stood up and cupped her son's cheek. "Oh baby, what's wrong? Please tell us."
The wall he tried to build up the last few minutes was starting to crack as he handed her the phone with an emotional tone. "It's best that I show you first."
Grissom stood up as Sara took the phone, then one look at the little boy in the photo, Sara knew, it was those eyes that caught her attention first. She would know those eyes anywhere, those were both of her son's eyes, her husband's eyes, causing her to gasp as she sat back down in shock.
Billy watched his mother's reaction before looking at his father, completely breaking down now. "I'm so sorry dad, I didn't know, honestly. I would have been there...I would..."
Grissom cuts his son off while wrapping his arms around him, whispering in comfort. "Hey, it's ok son, I know, I know you would have."
While Grissom was comforting his son, Sara asked the question while still viewing the pictures, seeing something else familiar about him. "Vanessa?"
He nodded while speaking softly. "Yes, and you should know her and her brother was murdered this morning."
Another gasp from her, but this time she stood up and cupped her son's cheek after Grissom released him. "Oh baby."
He nodded again before clearing his throat. "I have to go to LA as soon as possible."
Sara nodded in agreement even mentioning. "And we would like to go with you. Of course one of us will have to stay and meet you in a few days, but..."
Billy cuts her off. "I can't ask you guys to do that, what about your..."
Grissom cuts him this time, knowing the feeling between him and his wife was the same. "That doesn't matter right now, you is what matters."
Billy accepted the offer, but he honestly couldn't decide which parent he wanted the most to go with him, and they seemed to understand, so Sara spoke with a reassuring smile. "It's ok, we'll pick you up once we figure out the flight plan." He was about to speak, but she continued. "The only thing you have to worry about is packing a bag, we'll do the rest, I'm sure your head is all over the place right now."
"Thanks mom, and I'm sorry, I..."
She cuts him off one more time while bringing her oldest in her arms, feeling his tension wash away, at least for the moment. "You have nothing to apologize for, you did nothing wrong, you're a good man, and we all know for a fact had you known you had a son out there you would have been there with him in a heartbeat. Life just has a way of throwing curveballs when you least expect it."
He sniffled while he smirked. "Like it did for you two when it came to me?"
She chuckled lightly as they pulled back, then she cupped his cheek again and spoke with emotion. "The best curveball of my life, never forget that. Never forget how much I love you, no matter what."
"I love you too, mom."
After wiping his tears off his cheek, Sara removed her hand and he turned to his father so they could share a heartwarming hug as Grissom whispered. "I love you, son."
"Love you too, dad."
Once the hugging was done, Sara handed Billy's phone back to him, and while they were getting their jackets, Sara asked. "How do you want to tell your siblings? Stephanie and Nick?"
Billy sighed, knowing it should had been his responsibility, but he couldn't do it, so he asked if one or both of them could, which there was no hesitation in either of them, then after one more rounds of hugs, Billy and Juliet walked out of the house.
Once the font door closed, Sara placed her hand on the door, letting her full emotions come out, not only for the loss of her son's first love, whom, for the record, she always liked, but the new family member they just received, which of course it wasn't just any family member, it was a grandson, they just became known grandparents.
Grissom placed a hand on his wife's shoulder and asked with emotion. "Honey?"
She sniffled as she turned to him before smiling the best smile she could under the circumstances. "We have a grandson, which makes you a grandpa."
He nodded, actually feeling the joy of that word, before he smiled his best smile. "Yes we do, yes I am, and that would make you a grandma."
"Any other time I might cringe at being called that, but I don't want to, I want to welcome it with open arms."
Grissom brings her in his arms, saying the same thing.
After a moment, Grissom started to pull back as he spoke again. "Ok, we better get you packed."
"Griss..."
He cuts her off with a smile. "It was going to be you all along. He may have not verbalized it, but in his heart I know. If he had to really choose, he wants his mother with him."
Feeling a little sadden about that, she started to apologize. "Griss, I'm sor..."
But her cuts her off with a reassuring look. "There is nothing to apologize for, you of all people know there is just something about a mother's bond with their sons. I've learned to accept that. Heck, you learned to accept it with me and my mom." He paused then he shook his head with a smile. "Mom, wow, she's a great grandma now."
While they were heading upstairs, Sara asked. "How do you think she'll take the news?"
Grissom no hesitation. "Oh, I have no doubt she'll love it."
While Grissom's mom did have a health scare a few years ago, she's still alive and well, while patiently waiting for those great grandkids to start coming.
Sara chuckled with a nod. "You're probably right."
As they were packing her bag, they planned out what was going to happen in the next few days, then as they were finishing, there was a short pause before Sara sighed and shook her head. "I just can't stop thinking on why she never told us. I thought we had more trust between us."
Grissom sighed. "I don't know honey, and unfortunately we'll never know the answer to that."
"Yeah."
He then cupped her cheek as he finished. "But the important thing now is that we do know, and that little boy is going to have more family than he'll know what to do with."
Sara started to chuckle with a nod before doing another little sigh. "Yeah, he went from losing the only two family members he's ever known to having multiple cousins with various ages, aunts, uncles, great grandmas."
Grissom then finished. "A dad, and grandparents."
She nodded with a smile as their foreheads touched, still trying to wrap their heads around the fact that their oldest son is a father, and that they were now grandparents.
Once they pulled back, Sara checked everything over to make sure she did pack everything she needed before calling the airport while Grissom was calling their daughter to ask if she could come home, well next door to the Stokes house.
When both phone calls ended, they headed back downstairs, he grabbed the vehicle keys and they walked outside, locking the door, then Sara placed her bag in the trunk of the vehicle before they walked next door.
About 20 minutes later, after Faith arrived, Sara and Grissom shocked them with the news, but they sounded supportive.
Later that night
After dropping off Sara, Billy and Juliet at the airport, Grissom headed back home to spend some time with Faith and Even before they called it a night and went to their separate rooms, and as much as Grissom tried, he couldn't get to sleep, not only because Sara wasn't next to him but his mind wouldn't turn off long enough for him to settle down and fall asleep, so he sighed as he moved the blankets from himself and got out of bed, then after grabbing his robe and putting it on over his sweatpants and t-shirt, he quietly went down the hall and walked down the stairs, noticing immediately that the kitchen light was on once he reached downstairs.
When he walked into the room, he saw his daughter sitting at the kitchen counter, her hands cupping a coffee mug while it was on the counter.
He lets his presence be known a moment later. "Can't sleep, sweetheart?"
She looked at her father and shook her head before smirking a little, a pure 'Sara' look, causing his heart to skip a beat. "And it seems like you're in the same boat." He nodded with a smile as he walked towards the fridge to get a water bottle.
A moment passed before Faith continued to speak. "I just can't stop thinking that had he known from the beginning, he would have been 20 years old." She took a breath and shook her head. "I can't imagine being pregnant/parent that young." She then looked at her father shyly. "No offense to you and mom."
But Grissom understood, and really he was happy she had no plans on becoming a young mother, because while he'll never regret their choice on being parents that young, it was a lot of work juggling so many 'balls' in the air while trying set them up for the future.
He wanted his kids to experience life before they settled down with kids, so he shook his head with a smile. "No offense taken sweetheart, and I'm kind of happy about that, not that I don't think you could do it, but..."
Faith cuts him off with a smile. "I know dad, but trust me, it will be awhile before you have to think about being a grandparent again, at least when it comes to me."
Grissom nodded with another smile. "Ok." After another pause, he asked casually. "So, I've been meaning to ask, I can't help but notice we haven't seen Adrian in awhile."
While Faith has had a couple of dates since she was allowed to go on them through the years, Adrian came into her life at age 15, so for the past two years they watched their only daughter fall in love for the first time, as they were figuratively holding their breaths, hoping she didn't end up with a broken heart, or at least a major one.
She took a sip of her drink before sighing. "That's because we broke-up at the end of the school year."
Grissom almost spit out his water before looking at her with worry/concern. "I'm sorry sweetheart, are you ok?"
She started to nod with a small smile. "You know what, I am. I mean yes, it sucks and it hurts a little. He was my first serious boyfriend, so we shared a lot of firsts together and I'll cherish my time with him." When Grissom gave her an eyebrow raise, she shook her head and chuckled. "I promise not that far, dad." When she saw his relief, she couldn't help but chuckle a little more before she continued after another sigh. "But we both realized that our feelings for one another were changing, and instead of pretending like they weren't and making things worse for us, we decided to end it. Not all love stories have to end in a drama storm."
Grissom nodded in agreement. "That's a very mature way of dealing with it, I'm proud of you. I just want to make sure you're really ok."
"I really am. Besides, I graduate next spring and it's a new beginning I'm looking forward to."
And while she had gotten an early acceptance letter to Harvard, she choose to spend her senior year of high school with her friends, but knowing she was already accepted took away a lot of stress, so she was just looking forward to enjoying her last year of high school.
This time Grissom sighed as he spoke softly. "Yeah, don't remind me."
Faith gets up from her spot in the chair, walked around the counter and wrapped her arms around her father with a smile. "I'm sorry for growing up, daddy."
He chuckled as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and kissed her temple. "I'm not sweetheart, it's been a pleasure watching you grow into this amazing young woman. It just felt like time flew by a little too fast for my liking."
She just nodded before whispering softly. "Just know, no matter how old I get, I'll always love you."
"And I will always love you, butterfly."
He kissed her temple one more time before they hugged one another, then as they were pulling back, she spoke after an unexpected yawn. "I'm going to head to bed."
"Ok, I'll see you in the morning."
"Yeah, goodnight."
"Goodnight."
After they released one another, she grabbed her coffee mug and headed out of the room.
Grissom stayed in the kitchen for a few more minutes before he too headed back to the bedroom, hoping he could finally fall asleep.
Because of delays, it made getting to LA a lot later than was planned, so the three of them knew that meeting the little boy was going to have to be delayed until the morning, and when they got off the plane and into the airport, they see Maria and Betty waiting for them.
When they were near, Maria cupped Billy's cheek and asked softly. "Are you ok, sweetheart?"
Billy took a breath before nodding. "Yeah, but still in a little shock."
"No surprise there."
He then started to have tears in his eyes. "Thank you for..."
She cuts her off with a smile. "There is no need for that, he's family, and there isn't anything I wouldn't do for family."
They get into a hug while Betty finishes her greeting with Sara and Juliet.
After Maria greeted Sara and Juliet, while Betty brought her oldest grandson in her arms for a hug, they left the airport so she could drive them to Betty's house.
Once they got there, and out of the vehicle, Maria noticed Billy was looking next door. "You sure you don't want to meet him now?"
As much as he did, he didn't want to meet him when he was half-asleep or tired, so Billy shook his head. "No, it's best we wait until the morning."
Maria nodded in understanding. "Ok, and not to make either of you feel overwhelmed, it's just going to be us for breakfast tomorrow. Plus, only a few of us knows, I tried to keep a lid on it the best I could, until you had a chance to meet him and tell them yourself."
Knowing most of the family lived in the Los Angeles/Santa Monica area, that couldn't have been easy to do, especially how big the family has gotten through the years.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome, sweetheart."
Before they parted ways, Billy shook his head with a smile. "I uh, I can't believe I haven't asked this yet, but what's his name?"
They all chuckled, realizing they didn't know the little boy's name either, before Maria smiled. "B.J., short for Billy Jr."
A lump went to Billy's throat as he whispered. "She named him..."
He trailed off while Maria smiled with a nod. "Yeah. I'm guessing she still cared for you very much."
Feeling a little hurt now, he shook his head. "If she did, why didn't she tell me?"
"I don't know, sweetheart, I wish I had that answer for you."
After hugs goodnight, Betty, Juliet, Sara and Billy walked inside Mrs. Grissom's house while Maria drove next door.
Once the sleeping arraignments were established, where Sara got Grissom's childhood bedroom while Billy and Juliet were in the living room, Betty and Sara went to their respective rooms, and after a bit longer, once Billy noticed Juliet was asleep, he got up and headed for the kitchen to get something to drink before walking out on the deck.
However, Juliet didn't sleep very long, so she got up and went in search for him, finding him outside, sitting in a chair that was facing the yard, looking at the swing set he played on a lot when he was a child.
"Hey, you ok?"
He turned his body around and gave her a smile. "Yeah, I just can't seem to fall asleep. But I thought you were."
She shyly smiled as she walked over to him. "I was until my body realized yours wasn't next to me."
He chuckled a little. "So, you're saying I ruined your sleep for the rest of your life? If I'm not next to you."
She then smirked in return. "Yep, pretty much."
When the moment passed, she was asking with her eyes if he wanted her with him, but there was also an understanding if he needed a little time to himself.
Her secret wish was granted, when he held out his hand as he asked. "Sit with me please."
She smiled with a nod as she took his hand, then after helping her in his lap, he kissed her temple and wrapped his arms around her waist.
It was a comfortable silence between them for several minutes before he spoke softly. "Thank you for being here with me."
"You're welcome, babe. There is nowhere else I want to be than by your side. I love you so much."
She turned her body so she was looking in his eyes as he whispered with emotion. "And I love you."
They kissed, feeling that passion and love between one another, and after they pulled back, he kissed her forehead and they went back to their original positions.
Another 25 minutes passed when she started to get sleepy, so she whispered. "I'm going to try and get some sleep, I can't seem to keep my eyes open."
"Ok, I'll be in there in a few minutes."
"Alright."
She moved to get up, then after they share a sweet peck, she headed for the back door, and right as she stepped in and closed the door, Sara's voice was heard. "Is he ok?"
Juliet turned so she was now facing Sara and nodded her head with a smile. "Yeah, he just couldn't fall asleep."
Sara smirked. "I'm having the same issue."
And it was more than just thoughts rolling around in her brain, she still didn't sleep well when Grissom wasn't next to her.
Juliet wasn't completely sure of what she said next was true for her future mother-in-law, but knowing how much she loved Billy's dad, she couldn't have been that far off.
"Those Grissom men have completely ruined us in terms of sleeping."
Sara chucked with a nod in agreement. "Very much so."
Juliet chuckled too before she cleared her throat and said. "Goodnight Mrs. Griss..."
Sara cuts her off. "Please, when we are out of the lab, it's Sara." Juliet nodded before she started walking towards the living room, but stopped after a few steps when Sara spoke again. "Juliet before you leave the room. In all of this I haven't gotten a chance to thank you."
Juliet turned around and looked at Sara with confusion. "Thank me for what?"
Sara gave her a warm smile. "You know exactly for what, for being here for him."
Juliet replied without hesitation with a determined tone. "I'm not here out of some sort of obligation, if that's what you're thinking, I really do love him."
Sara nodded in agreement. "I know you do, you look at him like my husband still looks at me after all of these years, but finding all of this out still can't be easy on you."
"And I'm not going to pretend it is, but he's my future and whatever life throws at us it isn't going to change what I want with him. It might be altered, but as long as I have him, I'm still getting my dream."
Sara smiled. "And that makes me happy to hear that."
Once they said goodnight, Juliet continued to the living room, and after Sara gets a water bottle, she heads back to the bedroom, wanting to give her son some time to himself, knowing he was still processing what was going on.
