Dear Mum,

A bit shorter letter than you're probably expecting, but I have something to ask of you. You know by now that Christopher Beazley has enlisted, and he wants photos of Jean and the boys; I know what you're thinking - "How can I help with that? I don't have a camera!"

I know someone who does. You wanted to meet Alice, and you're getting your wish. She's free the week of the 7th, so may I ask a favor of you to show her to the Beazley farm and show her around Ballarat? It's a lot, and short notice, I know, but there's no one else I'd trust her to than you.

And… in more happy news, Alice is my girlfriend. We decided to date during my leave, and though war doesn't make for a regular, nice relationship, we didn't want to leave things to chance. Go easy on her, please. I still don't know a lot about her past, she's getting the courage to tell me, but from some inferences on her part, it doesn't sound good. I don't know what to tell you what to expect, but… just go easy with her.

Let me know if you're alright with this whole thing, and I can tell Alice where and when to go.

Love,

Matty

Dear Matty,

I'll do one better than just show her to the Beazley farm and around Ballarat; she can stay here so long as you don't mind her staying in your old room, Vera's room is currently being used as storage.

I look forward to getting to know her and tell her to call me with details on when she's coming into town, that way I know when to expect her. I'm so glad you decided to take that jump and date her, Matty, she makes you happy from what you've told me.

I'll take good care of her.

Love,

Mum

My Alice,

Mum has given her blessing for you to stay at the house, she wants you to call with details on when you'll arrive; she'll help you to the Beazley farm and show you around Ballarat. I've included the number down below for you.

Jean does know you're coming, I got Christopher to write her, so she's expecting you. I hope she doesn't come on too strong, she can if she wants to sometimes, and I like to think you'd get along.

And Mum also looks forward to meeting you; apparently, you'll be staying in my old room at the house.

Thank you for doing this, I know it was a lot to ask, but I appreciate it and I know the Beazleys will too, sweetheart.

Yours,

Matthew XX
