As Long As There Are Stars In the Sky
They lay on the plush sofa, Lily's back pressed against James' front, his arm wrapped around her waist. Through the window, James could see the stars bright in the sky, the moon only a slither of light.
It was a clear night, and beautiful for it, and all of James' carefully laid plans were cast aside. He'd spent hours planning the perfect night, roping Sirius, Remus and Peter into his plans to put on a performance for her. A candlelit dinner, rose petals on the bed, a bath drawn, tuxedo robes for him and a pretty dress for her.
But none of that mattered, he realised, because she just… she just needed to know that he'd be hers for as long as there were stars in the sky.
And he just needed to know that she wanted to be his.
"Lils?"
"Hmm?"
"Marry me?"
She stilled in his arms for a moment and then turned to look at him. "Say that again? I'm not sure if I'm dreaming."
"You're not dreaming, Lils. I had all these plans with food and rose petals and champagne and… I just realised I don't need any of that. We don't need any of that, because we're more than romantic gestures. I can't imagine a single second of the rest of my life that I won't want you in my arms. So… will you marry me?"
She stared at him for a long moment and then she grinned giddily. "Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!"
He returned her smile, cupping her cheek to lead her into a kiss and then pulled his wand from his pocket.
"Accio ring!"
A second, two, then three passed before the small black box flew into his hand. He opened it and presented it to her, the diamond catching the light.
"Oh, James, it's beautiful."
"Can't hold a candle to you, Lils," he replied, as he pulled the ring from the box and slipped it onto her finger.
"I love you," she murmured. "So much, James."
"I love you too."
