Shhhhh I know I got my math wrong with Dean. He was born in 1979 which means January 24, 2000 he would be 21. Sam will turn 17 May 2 and Kate will turn 10 April 3. Just pretend that I didn't mess any of that up. The boys' birthdays are cannon.
############
Kate did the mental math and figured they had reached the official year mark. Her dad wouldn't tell her the exact day but she knew she was not quite a year old when he made the deal. She stomped through the crunchy snow on her way back to Hannah's house. School was out for Winter break, which gave her extra time to think. She felt bitter with each milestone.
Hannah was excited about New Year's day because it was the beginning of the next century. "2000, Kate! We are one step closer to flying cars."
Kate didn't care about flying cars.
"Oh and we turn 10 too!" Hannah added.
Kate didn't care about that either. 10 was a horrible number to Kate.
Hannah tried her best to cheer her friend up but Kate was mopey and didn't talk much. She wouldn't even tell her why she was so upset. There was so much to be excited about. Even when Kate had been at their house for Christmas, she wasn't her normal self.
Kate laid down on Hannah's bed and watched the fairy lights twinkle above the bed. Her own room had one light, a book shelf and her bed. She had a few trinkets and John's note that she kept forgetting to tear down. Part of her was bitter that other kids got happy, healthy homes with parents who didn't make demon deals.
Hannah laid down beside her friend. "I'm not going to stop asking until you tell me what is wrong."
Kate finally gave in and gave her the "kid friendly" version of what the next year held.
Hannah frowned. "There has to be a way to stop it."
"My dad and the others have tried to find a way but I don't think anyone has ever gotten out of a deal." Kate said weakly.
Over the next two days, Kate told Hannah about her visions and all the things she could do.
Hannah was amazed that her friend was so cool. "So you dream and sometimes the dreams come true?"
Kate shrugged. "I guess so, or the dream means something."
They were sitting in the tree house sipping apple cider. "Let's call the number."
Kate looked at Hannah like she had three heads. "Are you crazy?"
"It could possibly save your dad, right? You wouldn't have so many dreams about the house if it didn't mean anything." Hannah answered calmly.
"Some of the others already checked the house out and didn't find anything."
"Did they go in the house?" Hannah pushed.
"No, I don't think so." Kate answered carefully.
"We can call just to check it out. Maybe it is nothing but you wont know if you don't try."
"Hannah, my dad will kill me." Kate whined.
Hannah grinned. "He wont find out. I'll use my mom's phone so he will never know."
Kate groaned but had to admit that Hannah had a point.
Hannah returned with Mandy's cellphone. "Tell me the number."
Kate had the number memorized from the many nights that she spent reading the paper over and over. "I don't know about this. If anything goes wrong or anyone finds out, I'm serious, I will be dead."
"You aren't calling. I am and no one said that wasn't okay." Hannah countered.
Kate chewed on her fingers but gave Hannah the number. "What are you going to say? You can't just say hi and tell her that her house has been part of some kid's visions."
Hannah rolled her eyes. "Just leave that to me."
Kate pulled her knees to her chest and rested her head. This was a monumentally horrible idea.
The phone rang once before a woman answered. She introduced herself as Hellen.
Hannah dodge Kate's hand as she tried to grab the phone. "Hi, Ms. Hellen. My name is Hannah. I was digging through some books and stuff and saw this number and I am bored and just figured I'd see who it belonged to."
Kate couldn't hear exactly what she was saying but Hellen's voice was calm and amused.
Hannah stuck her tongue out at Kate and chatted with Hellen. After a few minutes Hannah turned her back to Kate. "On the paper it says 'Hellen will be able to help' it sounded cool so I just had to call and ask what it was about."
Kate shoved Hannah with her foot. That is not what the paper said. She should never have let Hannah call. Her dad was going to kill her and then Bobby would, and Dean would and John would. They'd revive her and kill her again. She didn't hear anything Hellen or Hannah said.
Hannah hung up the phone with a big grin on her face. "That was easy."
Kate wanted to cry. "We shouldn't have done that."
Hannah giggled. "She was really nice."
Kate put her head back down. "That doesn't mean that was safe or she is a good person... or even a person."
"Kate, everything is fine. She said she wasn't sure what she could help with but I was free to call back if I figured it out, of course after I talk to my mom." Hannah was confident.
Kate rolled her eyes. "Don't you think a normal adult would get mad and say it was a prank call and tell you to stop?"
Hannah thought about it. "Nah, I handled it well and my story was good."
Kate was less confident and just knew the adults would find out.
The yellow house vision came back that night. Kate backed away when she saw the house. She knew calling the house was wrong and going into the house wouldn't help her case. She turned away from the house and tried to walk away.
The door opened and a woman stepped out on the porch. "Don't just stand there, come inside."
Kate spun around. That had never happened before. She knew she should absolutely not go inside. Even in normal people circumstances, going into a stranger's house was dumb. Kate reasoned that she would be in trouble for the phone call anyway so she might as well make it worth it.
"My name is Hellen. I know who you are." She said warmly.
Kate didn't like the sound of that but followed her in the house against her better judgment.
Hellen motioned for Kate to sit down on the floral sofa in the sitting room.
Kate sat down rigidly. She was very aware that the man with the yellow eyes had sat down in that exact spot. Remembering the connection with Hellen and the man made her anxious. She ruefully thought that if Hellen killed her, she wouldn't have to face her dad when he found out.
"I am sure you are confused." Hellen said.
Kate nodded her head. Confused and scared.
Hellen sat down on the other side of the sofa and sipped something from a tea cup. "I was wondering when you would show up again."
Kate flinched.
"This is what you would call a vision, but I have sensed you before." Hellen added.
Kate just looked at her.
Hellen sighed. "We have a lot to talk about don't we?"
Kate woke up the next morning. She had no idea how long she had been out. Her head ached and her mind raced. Hellen was very nice to her. She was soft spoken and answered questions. Kate didn't feel like she was a threat the way that she did when she had seen the man with the yellow eyes. Hellen hinted that she knew a thing or two about that but didn't answer those questions. She would need to remind Hannah how important the secret was. She barely escaped repercussions for telling her about monsters in the first place. She couldn't afford to write anything down about the vision. She would just have to remember the details. She was anxious and just knew someone would find out but for the first time in a long time she had hope.

"Dean, blade!" John yelled.
Dean army crawled across the floor and slid the blade to John with expert precision.
John grabbed it and drove the knife into the heart of the woman attacking him.
"I thought there was just one!" Sam said breathlessly.
John rolled the woman off of him. "I guess they hunt in pairs."
Dean rubbed his head were she had hit him with a two by four. "What did you say that thing was?"
"A vetala." John answered.
"Damn shame." Dean said. "She was hot."
John shook his head and chuckled. "You would be thinking about that, wouldn't you?"
Sam was tired but walked away with nothing more than a bruised knee. It took him a little while to get over the accident. He still didn't enjoy going after ghosts.
John clapped Sam on the back and pulled him in for a side hug. He worried when Sam started going on hunts again. John wouldn't tell him but he had saved the truly dangerous hunts for himself and a few other seasoned hunters.
Dean was delighted to spend more time behind baby's wheel. He wasn't the homebody that Sam was.
Sam grew tired of the travel pretty quickly. He wanted to focus on school so his GPA didn't falter. He had unannounced plans to go to college and wanted to put more effort into his final years of high school. He worked on homework while Dean drove, so the uptick in miles weren't horrible.
John found that he liked having both boys by his side. He and Sam still wore at each other's nerves but It was manageable.
Bobby was good ol' dependable Bobby. He stuck around the salvage yard, scrounging up bits of information for different hunters. He had taken a few hunts outside of town but enjoyed his down time. He hadn't seen Kate or Brian since the last time they visited so he decided he ought to pay them a visit. He had gotten attached to the kids and when the house was too silent, he found himself missing them.
##########
Kate was ecstatic to see Bobby again. She found his scowls and grumpiness endearing after a while. He was very much like a grandfather, although he would blanch at that. On paper he was Uncle Bobby and she was happy with that. "Bobby!" She screeched when he knocked on the door.
Bobby blushed. "Hey there." He said as he let her hug him. He had to admit that her greetings were a bit more enthusiastic than Sam or Dean's.
"Dad will be back in a little while. He went to town to get some stuff." She said, twirling around in circles.
Bobby raised a brow. "You sure answered that door fast for someone who was left home alone."
Kate grinned. "You aren't a demon or a shapeshifter so I think I'm safe."
"And how do you know that?"
"You walked right through the devils trap and" She pointed to the ring she wore on her hand. "I tested you."
Bobby smiled at that. She was by far the sneakiest out of all of them. Sam and Dean could be covert but Kate probably would make a good pickpocket.
"Sit. I'll get you some coffee." Kate said as she whirled around to grab a mug from the cabinet.
Bobby listened as Kate chatted happily. He did wonder how one person could say so much at one time.
Brian returned with groceries and Bobby helped him put them away.
Bobby noticed Brian's demeaner and made a note to talk to him. He had every right to be depressed and hopeless but he also had Kate to think of.
Kate had invited Hannah over and was bouncing off the walls waiting for her to arrive.
"Seems like she has taking a liking to whoever Hannah is." Bobby commented.
Brian groaned. "Thelma to her Louise."
Bobby smiled at that. "I thought that was Sam."
Brian shook his head. "Just wait until she gets here."
Hannah arrived and then they had two kids bouncing off the walls.
Bobby thought Kate talked a lot but was amazed that Hannah could surpass her abilities.
The girls went outside with an order to stay within the safe zone.
Brian and Bobby could see them running around from their seat at the table.
"Her mama is okay with her being over here, around all this?" Bobby said, flicking his hand toward the visible warding and weapons.
Brian sighed. "Kate filled her in."
Bobby sat back. "She did, did she?"
Brian told him the story of how Hannah came to know about the supernatural.
"That girl." Bobby said, leaning back to watch Kate standing on the tire swing.
Brian simply nodded his head and took a bite out his sandwich.
Kate sat down on the ground to catch her breath. She snuck a glance at the cabin to make sure they were still in view of the window but at an angle where they didn't look suspicious.
Hannah sat down as well and opened her back pack. She pulled a notebook and colorful pencils from the bag.
Kate situated the supplies so that, if her dad looked at them, it looked like they were drawing. "Did you bring it?"
Hannah nodded and placed a slip of paper under the notebook.
Kate scribbled with one hand while she read the page. "Are you sure this is right?"
Hannah nodded again. "I wrote it down exactly how I saw it."
Kate chewed her lip.
Hannah had used her brother's computer to research a few things. They had to be discrete so that Mandy didn't think to look at what Hannah had been reading.
Kate felt guilty. She knew she shouldn't be sneaking around but if there was any possible way to save her dad, she was going to attempt it. Dean jokingly called her a witch. When she talked John down on her birthday, Dean had even made the comment that she could talk a hellhound out of collecting a soul. She knew that he was exaggerating but she might just be able to trick a hellhound. She had spent several nights talking to Hellen and had months to gather the things she needed. She just needed to manage to keep it under wraps. If anyone found out, she didn't even want to think of the amount of trouble she would be in. Hannah was an important ally.
Brian watched the girls from the window. They were sitting across from each other on the ground. Seeing Kate with another kid always made him happy.
"How is she doing with everything?" Bobby asked.
"I think she is doing well. I know she is upset and antsy as time goes on but I think Hannah is a nice distraction." Brian answered.
"And how are you doing?"
Brian looked at the older hunter. "Some days are worse than others. I can't say I'm excited."
Bobby nodded his head. "Would you consider heading back my way before it is time? Maybe after school ends."
Brian thought about it. "She has her friend here and I have my job."
"You shouldn't work yourself to the bone. She wont need a nest egg, Brian. I told you I would make sure she has all she needs." Bobby said.
Brian ran his hand over his face. "Going back just feels like giving in. We will, eventually but it feels like hospice."
Bobby grimaced. Hospice is exactly what it was.

Sam started having visions again. Maybe vision isn't a good word. He was having feelings but not emotions. They were the feelings you get when something bad was about to happen. The first time it happened, he had grabbed Dean's arm and pulled him back just as a boulder fell in front of them. Hunters had good instincts so he chocked it up to that. It happened another time when he ducked and narrowly missed a snapped cable flying over his head. He had seen such reflexes from Dean and John but somehow this was different. He had called Kate and she swore she had nothing to do with it. The feelings had only helped him so he didn't dwell on it.
Dean fully intended on going to a bar on his birthday. It wasn't like he hadn't drank before then but drinking hit different when it was legal. He was responsible 99.9% of the time so he felt he owed it to himself to have some fun.
John was out on a hunt and wasn't due back for a few days.
Dean knew not to drink and drive but planned on being sober by the time he got behind baby's wheel. John was known to drown his worries in a bottle but wouldn't stand for driving drunk. Dean also didn't want to put baby in danger.
Sam offered to go with Dean and wait in the car.
Dean laughed at him and told him to stay at the motel.
Sam watched as he drove away and took the alone time to work on college applications. A few hours later Sam was hit by one of those gut feelings. It was so strong that he broke out in a cold sweat. He shoved his gun in the back of his pants and headed toward the bar that Dean was going to. It was only a mile or two away and Sam could make it there in good time.
Dean was buzzed but kept himself from drinking enough to black out. He played a few rounds of pool and had a nice wad of cash in his pocket. He was having a fantastic time. He ordered another drink and sat down at the bar.
Sam continued at a brisk walk, conserving his energy until the feeling got too strong to ignore.
Dean's head started to get fuzzy. He kept a count of how many drinks he had and didn't think he had enough to cause that amount of fuzziness. He went outside to let the cool air clear his head. He sat down on baby's hood and closed his eyes then he heard an unmistakable click.
"Keep your hands where I can see them." A man's voice said.
Dean felt hands at his side, digging into his pocket. He threw an elbow and tagged the man in the face.
The man yelped and hit Dean with the butt of the gun.
Dean jumped up and realized the man had buddies. He wasn't sure how many there were because he might have been seeing double. He cursed himself and posted up for a fight. He managed to kick the gun from the man's hand and send it flying before catching a fist to the face. Everything got blurry at that point.
One of the men grunted loudly and fell to his knees. His buddies looked around to see what had hit him.
Sam pulled his gun from behind him. "Get up and walk away."
The lead man laughed. "Kid, get your scrawny ass out of here before you shoot yourself with that."
Sam cocked the gun. "Walk. Away."
The three men stood up and took a step toward Sam.
Dean got to his feet and steadied himself.
Sam knew that firing the gun in such close quarters would be less than ideal. He shot Dean a crooked grin. "Alright, let's do this the fair way." He flicked the safety on and put the gun back in his belt loop.
"You dumbass kid." One of the men mumbled.
The fight only lasted a minute or two before the men were subdued and nursing wounds.
Sam drew his weapon again and backed away toward the impala. He bent down and grabbed the gun that Dean had kicked away. He tilted his head for Dean to get in the car. "I'm driving." Was all he said to Dean. He held the gun up and flashed a smile at the men on the ground "Thank you gentlemen for the extra gun. It's been fun." He got in the driver's seat and high tailed it away from the bar.
Dean laid his head back against the seat and held a t shirt to his face. "Thank you gentlmen... it's been fun?" He finally asked.
Sam grinned. "It seemed like something you'd say."
Dean laughed. "I probably would have if I could see straight."
Sam grimaced. "They knocked you around pretty good."
Dean looked in the mirror and groaned. "I think they drugged me.
"Sure it wasn't the alcohol?"
Dean huffed. "I can handle my liquor, Sam. Where did you even come from?"
"I had a gut feeling something was wrong and luckily I did or you'd be in worse shape."
"Nah, I could have handled it." Dean said.
Sam snorted. "Just say thanks, dude."
Back at the motel they got a good view of themselves.
Sam chuckled. "How are we going to explain this to dad?"
Dean thought about it. "Just a bar fight."
Sam shook his head. "Dad rule 201 'never let your guard down.' I think getting smashed and letting three guys jump you qualifies."
Dean ran his face under the faucet. He didn't need that lecture.
Sam sat down on the bed and grabbed a bottle of water. "You hustled some pool and made some dude mad."
Dean raised a brow and motioned toward the bruises Sam sported. "Why were you there?"
Sam smirked. "I was waiting in the car and jumped in to save your ass."
"You didn't save my ass."
"Listen, if I am covering for you, I am going to take the credit." Sam said.
Dean ruffled Sam's hair. "Fine. My little brother saved my ass." He was fully aware that Sam actually did save his ass but he didn't want the kid's head to get too big.
Sam tossed him a bottle of water and pain meds before heading to take a shower. His adrenaline was pumping and he had to admit the fight had been fun in a twisted way. He let the water wash away the sweat and blood from his face. He faired much better than any of the other guys and that gave him a sense of pride. He wasn't some scrawny kid.

Kate sat on the edge of her bed and bounced her legs. She could not sleep. Hannah was peacefully resting beside her but she couldn't shut her mind off. She chewed her fingers and looked at Hannah's backpack. She gave up and pulled the paper back out of the notebook. She needed to talk to Hellen.
Sam was just about to dose off when he was hit by a wall of worry. He looked over at Dean who was breathing evenly. He closed his eyes and tried to slow his heart down. He sat still for a few minutes trying to make sense of what he felt. He laid is head back on his pillow and threw his arms over his eyes. He looked at the clock. It was after mid night. He rolled out of bed and grabbed his phone. 'God, kid. What have you gotten yourself into now?' he thought as he dialed Kate's number.
Kate saw her phone light up and saw that it was Sam calling. He knew. She froze for a moment and decided to ignore the call. She wasn't going to do anything. She was safe. She just had questions.
