Chapter 52: Meeting his son

While the family did get a little sleep, it wasn't very much, they were just too excited to meet the newest member of the family, or in Billy's case, he was excited and nervous at the same time, almost to the point of throwing up his breakfast, but luckily he didn't.

When it reached around 10'clock in the morning, Sara received a call from Maria, in which she gave them the go-ahead to come over when they, he, was ready.

After thanking her and hanging up the phone, she looked at her son across the dinning room table and asked. "Are you ready?"

He looked at Juliet first, and she gave him a smile as she squeezed his hand. "Whenever you're ready, babe. I'm right here with you."

He nodded at her then took a breath before nodding at his mother. "Yeah, I'm ready."

Sara nodded in return before they all stood up, and even though Mrs. Grissom was anxious to meet her first great-grandson, she decided to stay back and let father and son have this moment and she'll join in later.

Once the group of three arrived at the front door, there was a moments pause so Billy could take another moment, knowing in the next his life was about to change forever, not that it hadn't with the phone call, but this is were things become more real, there was no turning back now, not that he would ever do that.

He let out the deep breath before knocking on the door.

A second later, Maria opened it with a smile before moving to the side to let them in the house.

They walked in for a few steps and stopped, seeing the living room empty but the start of a puzzle was on the coffee table, causing Billy to smile, then his heart started to race when he heard Jacob's voice from the kitchen as he walked into the living room, holding the little boy's hand.

"Now B.J. there is someone very special who wants to meet you, and believe me, you have nothing to be afraid of he's one of the best men you'll ever know."

By the time Jacob had stopped in front of Billy, Billy was already kneeling down in almost shock.

Those pictures did not do his son justice, he was even more beautiful in person, and if there had been even an ounce of doubt before, even with the positive test that confirmed he was in fact a Grissom, there was none left whatsoever, he was looking at his son.

The moment seemed to drag on as they both were straying at one another in silence, almost with an awe look, then Billy finally spoke after clearing his throat. "Hi B.J., I know you probably have so many emotions and thoughts running through your head right now, and I don't mean to cause you any more confusion, but I want to be honest right from the start so there are no secrets between us." Billy took a second before he continued. "I'm your father, B.J. and I was never told you existed. But that doesn't matter now, the only thing that matters is that I am here for you, from this moment on you'll never have to wonder if you have a father out there who loves you."

Another moment passed them by before B.J. took his hand out of Jacob's and ran towards the hall to the bedrooms, which he was staying in the room that once belonged to Tyreek then Jacob Jr.

While no one knew what to make of what he just did, they reminded themselves what that little boy went through and wanted to give him a moment to himself before one of them went after him, but they had nothing to worry about because as fast as he had left the room he made it back in just as fast before he handed Billy a wallet sized picture.

Billy took it from his son with curiosity, then the air almost going out of him the moment he saw that it was his and Vanessa's senior prom picture, and when he turned it around it read Vanessa's handwriting 'Mommy & Daddy, senior prom, 2010', he then looked at his son in shock. "So, you knew who I was the moment you saw me?"

While the little boy didn't speak, he did do the most classic 'Grissom' action ever, that known smirk before he smiled while walking towards the coffee table, where the puzzle was at, causing everybody to chuckle.

As Billy stood up, he couldn't stop looking at him, then he turned to look at his mother, and she gave him a nod and smile. "You can introduce us later, go bond with him."

He nodded with a smile of his own before looking at Juliet and holding out his hand, and with the reassuring look on his face, she took it as they headed towards the couch while Sara, Maria, and Jacob headed for the kitchen, and after they walked into the room, Sara finally greeted Jacob with a hug and kiss on his cheek. "It's nice to see you again, dad. And thank you for..."

Jacob cuts her off with a smile. "No need to thank me, sweetheart, I was just doing my job."

"Which in turn brought my grandson home to his family."

As they pulled back, Jacob smirked a little. "And I bet that was weird for you to say."

She chuckled with a nod. "Very much so, but I'm embracing it to the fullest."

As Jacob nodded with a smile, they both heard Maria say something. "It finally makes sense now."

Both of them looked at Maria before Sara asked. "What does?"

She looked at Sara before explaining what she observed from him yesterday. "When I brought him here yesterday, he kept looking at the photos hanging on the walls, particularly those that had Billy in them. It almost looked like he wanted to say something, but he never did."

Sara sighed as the three of them took a seat at the round table. "I can only imagine what he thought/felt when he saw his father's picture in a complete strangers house." They both nodded before Sara asked. "Has he talked at all?"

Both of them smiled with a nod before Jacob spoke. "A little. He's just trying to take in everything after the blow he received in his life."

Sara nodded in agreement/understanding, knowing that feeling to a T. "It did take me a bit to start warming up to my surroundings when I first got here."

Maria couldn't help but smirk. "Definitely warmed up to certain surroundings, or should I say person, a little quicker than others."

Sara shyly smiled as the Maria and Jacob chuckled, then Jacob spoke again. "I should also inform you that he knows sign language, at least the basics."

Sara admittedly looked shocked. "Really?" After a nod, Sara sighed and shook her head. "Then that just puzzles me even more, she wanted her son to know what his father looked like, she named him after Billy, and she obviously cared enough to teach him sign language, knowing it's practically a second language in his father's life. But yet, she never told him, told us."

Maria sighed after a short nod. "I'm not trying to defend what she didn't do, but maybe she was scared." Before Sara could speak, Maria continued. "That you would look at her and think she wouldn't be a fit mother."

Sara shook her head. "I would have never thought that, and if she thought that we would have tried to take him away from her then..." Sara sighed again before speaking softly. "She didn't know us at all, which is a shame. We would have done everything we could to help her, we would have found a way to make this work."

Maria moved her hand to touch Sara's with a loving look. "I know, sweetheart, but sometimes when you're pregnant, especially when you're younger..."

Sara cuts her off, knowing that feeling. "You get into protective mode at any cost, no matter what." She sighed one more time. "I know that, I just wish..."

She trailed off, and Maria nodded in understanding, then she asked. "So, what's going to happen next with Vanessa and her brother?"

Sara removed her hand from Maria's and tucked her hair behind her ear as she replied. "Well, I have to get in touch with the coroner's office so I can make arrangements to send their bodies back to Chicago, both of their parents are buried there."

Maria shook her head with sigh. "It was really only those two left in that family? I mean they did a search and couldn't find any members on B.J.'s mother's side."

"Yeah, that family wasn't that big."

After she told them the story about Vanessa and her brother losing their parents in a vehicle accident, they changed the subject so Sara could know how her parents were doing, and as the conversation became just between Maria and Sara, Jacob left the room only to come back in a minute later and handed her a business card as he spoke when there was a break in his wife's and daughter's conversation. "Here is a CSI you should get in touch with, Frank Miller."

Sara took the card with a smirk. "Look at you having all the connections here." After there was a chuckle, Sara spoke in a more sincere tone. "Thank you, dad."

"You're welcome, sweetheart."

(Around lunch time in Los Angeles)

While Sara was standing on the deck, close to the railing, she was watching her son and grandson, which still got her heart skipping at that new thought, running around the yard chasing one another, and hearing them laugh caused her to close her eyes, then she heard her husband's voice on her phone.

"Honey, you still there?"

She was on the phone with her husband and got distracted by that beautiful sound before she cleared her throat and opened them back up as she spoke. "Yeah, sorry about that, I just got lost in a beautiful sound, our babies laughing."

Grissom took a breath before speaking softly. "That must be nice to hear, so everything is going ok, under the circumstances?"

Sara nodded, even though he couldn't see her. "Yeah, I mean he's still on the quiet side when it comes to talking, but with the interactions I'm seeing, I can tell he's warming up to us."

"That's nice to hear too, and our son, how is he?"

Sara smiled as she saw Billy wrap his arms around his son before he started tickling the little boy, causing them both to laugh before B.J. squirmed out his arms again, causing Billy to playfully chase his son again.

"The only way to describe it, is he's a natural. You know how he was with Faith and Even? Well times that to about 10, and you probably still won't even come close to the happiness he has on his face. He's already in love with him. I'm in love too."

With more emotion since their phone call started, Grissom responded. "How can you not be, he's part Sidle."

Sara smiled warmly. "And part Grissom." There was a short pause before Sara spoke again softly. "I can't wait until you get here, I miss you and the kids."

"We miss you too, honey, and we should be there around noon tomorrow."

"Alright, and thank you for helping out in the lab."

"No problem, but honestly they picked up the slack pretty well, I don't think they needed me all that much."

There was no doubt that Grissom loved his time as a CSI, not that he obviously liked the people dying part, but he loved finding justice for the victims, working out the scenes like he was putting a puzzle together.

Eventually though, it did ware on him a lot and his attention turned to more of a teaching role in the lab until he got offered an actually teaching job at Chicago University. He'll still do seminars every once in awhile during school breaks and help out in the lab when it's needed the most, especially when there was bugs involved, but his new passion was being in the classroom, and Sara couldn't be happier for him.

Softly, she replied. "Now don't think that extends to me, because I still need you."

He smiled. "And I'm not going anywhere, honey."

They talked a little more, mostly she asked how Faith and Even were doing, before they started to end their phone call.

"I'll talk to you later tonight, honey."

"Ok, love you."

"Love you too, bye."

"Bye, babe."

After she heard a click on his end, she officially ended the call with a sigh.

It didn't matter how many times they were apart, or how long it lasted, she still couldn't fully get use to being away from him.

The rest of the day progressed pretty nicely, especially in terms of B.J.'s demeanor around the small group, mostly when it came to his interactions with his father. It was starting to look like they hadn't missed a day of each other's lives, and everybody was so happy about it. They knew their own relationships with the boy will eventually grow more in time, but the most important one was between father and son, so it was nice seeing that progression grow from this morning.

Later that evening

After dinner came and went, Sara was in the kitchen doing the dishes, which she volunteered, and as she was finishing up, Billy walked into the room and cleared his throat. "Mom."

Sara sets the towel down on the counter and turned to her son with a smile. "Yes, baby?"

He walked further in the room before continuing softly. "I want to see Vanessa."

Sara took a sharp breath after hearing that, knowing how hard that would be for him, in many was.

It was hard for her to even think about it, and she sees dead bodies all the time, so she asked in concern. "Are you sure?"

Feeling confident while also understanding his mother's worry, he nodded. "I know it won't be easy, but I need that closure."

Sara walked up to her son and cupped his cheek before also nodding in understanding. "Ok, we'll go as soon as your father gets here tomorrow afternoon."

He nodded with a small smile before he wraps his mother in his arms. "Thank you mom, not only for that, but for taking care of..."

He trailed off, but she got what he was trying to say as she ran a hand up and down his back. "No problem, anything that will help you through this. I know it's been years since you two were together, but I can only imagine how hard this is for you, and while I know it's only a little comfort to say this, I truly mean it, I'm sorry for your loss."

He sniffled with a nod. "A part of me is always going to love her, I can't deny that, so you're right, it is a small comfort, but one that is definitely accepted. I love you mom."

"I love you too, baby."

They pulled back a moment later and she cupped his cheek with tears in her eyes. "And I'm so proud of the man you've become, watching you and your son is an amazing sight."

He nodded with tears in his eyes. "And it feels amazing. I was always told that loving a child is a feeling like no other, and they're right, I already love him so much."

"I know you do, and so do I."

Their mother/son moment was interrupted a second later when they heard B.J.'s voice. "Daddy, can we watch that movie now?"

Sara removed her hand before both their heads turned to look at the little boy who was now standing in the kitchen doorway, Billy's heart skipping a beat at being called 'daddy' for the first time from his son, then he nodded before speaking with emotion. "Yes, I'll be there in a second, buddy."

He nodded with a smile before looking at Sara. "You coming too, grandma?"

Now it was Sara's turn for her heart to skip a beat at being called 'grandma' for the first time from her grandson as she nodded with a smile. "Yes, sweetheart."

B.J. nodded with a wider smile before he rushed back into the living room.

When it was just the two of them again, Billy looked at his mother with a sparkle in his eyes. "So, how does it feel, grandma?"

Sara chuckled. "Still feels strange to hear, but I wouldn't have it any other way, daddy."

It was his time to chuckle a little before she slipped her arm through his as they head towards the doorway.
