Soren Ventra, 15, D3M:

Anybody with half a brain could tell that a storm is moving in. Pola dismissed me when I proclaimed that we were all going to die. She said that if we got a few long branches we could prop up our tarps in a tent shape, drag our supplies under them with us, and stay warm through the night with the aid of our sleeping bags and blanket. Of course it's not that simple. It's pitch black, and since Pola thinks she's the president or something and can boss me around, she didn't let me make a fire so she could see better. Instead, she and Zea are busy driving sticks into the frozen ground while I sit on a helpfully positioned rock and contemplate the weather.

Today was awful and overcast, and what little I can see of the sky is now muddled with deep gray clouds. Thunder rumbles across the snowy landscape, and with them, rain begins to fall. There's no way Pola will be able to set up her makeshift tent, and I'm eager to see her fail and finally realize she's not as smart as she thinks she is. An icy deluge lashes across her face, but somehow, some way, she gets the tarps firmly in place. One thing that I hate about Pola is that she's never wrong, and her constant planning gets on my nerves.

I don't know if I can stand another day with these horrible, conceited allies in this equally horrible, desolate arena. The only reason I'm even running with them is for food and protection. Still, I think I deserve a bit more than just that. They're obviously in this alliance for their own gain, just the same as I have, but I can't be the second one to betray my teammates.

I hate both of them with a fervor. They clearly think I have no useful skills to contribute, but they're wrong. I can win these Hunger Games easily if I cared to do so. However, the Capitol is so despicable that I want to do something to spite them first. Suddenly, there's a shout from Pola, and I'm hopeful that maybe a mutt got her.

No dice, she's near the supplies, waving something around. It pops open into an umbrella. What's she thinking? An umbrella won't be of any use out here, it'll get shredded in an instant! She sticks it up anyway, though, and it holds steady, just like everything she constructs. I don't even register her presence before she has me by the collar and is dragging me under the shelter. "Come on, we've blocked out the storm. You can get in the tent if you'd like."

I shove her, hard. "I don't want any part in your damn invention!" I snap. She sighs.

"What do you want me to tell you, Soren? Why can't you just accept that sometimes I know what I'm doing?"

"I hate you!" I declare. "You're awful and I hate you more than I've ever hated anyone ever before! I'd rather stay out here than spend the night within ten feet of your scrawny, no-friends-having, pathetically short self!" The insult seems to land alright but it clearly hasn't because Pola is laughing now, a strange and uncalled for sound that I wasn't expecting at all.

"Soren. Soren, Soren Soren. What am I going to do with you?" It's clearly a rhetorical question, and she seems to have the answer ready for me. "If you want to be cold and wet instead of cozy and dry, that's alright by me. If you want to sleep outside on the hard ground, that's your choice, but Zea and I will be snoozing safely out of the storm in our sleeping bags. If you want to act like a brat and cast aside all the things I set up that can benefit you, okay, you can. Just remember that the sponsors might not feel your oh-so-righteous anger about the lack of accommodations." I glare at her as she prepares to go to bed, but she brought something to my attention. My sponsors, who already gave me so many things today, can just send me my own sleeping bag, as well as a tent and blankets and everything.

"Hey, listen up, sponsor people. Give me a sleeping bag and tent right now!" I demand. "And some bedding and a nice coat would also be nice. Also, I'm in dire need of a hot meal." Even though I wait for a few minutes, no sponsor gifts make themselves known. There's a distinct lack of parachutes in the sky. Defeated, I slink back to the tent, pointedly ignore Zea, and yank Pola's sleeping bag right out from under her. She just climbs in with Zea, and I abhor the way that they're a united front. United against me. I told Pola the truth, I hate her the most out of any person I've ever met.

With the possible exception of Genevieve Fitzgerald. I hate her most of all.

I used to think that she was my best friend. She stood beside me when nobody else ever did, even bargained with the Peacekeepers so I wouldn't get whipped the time I was pissed at a shopkeeper and got caught stealing money from behind the counter. It was clearly all a ruse though, because then she laid a trap for me and got me sent to juvie. She got me sent to the worst place in the world and she never looked back. It was a kick in the teeth when she visited me in the Justice Building. Confident stride, smooth bronze skin, dimples, and the prettiest brown hair. She wore her shortest dress, because she's a tease as well as a bitch, and she felt like taunting me one last time. I loathe Genevieve Fitzgerald more than anyone else, even Pola, because Genevieve Fitzgerald wasn't always my enemy.

Some might even say I loved her.

Soya Orlando, 14, D11F:

I might be weaponless, numb with cold, and so thirsty that my tongue is beginning to dry out in my mouth, but I have six reasons to be grateful. Their names are Thys, Ryan, Amiee, Harry, Trey, and Sorrel.

The field is three-quarters of its original size, and it's about to shrink a little more. The Careers are having a spat with one another and two of them are injured, so it's unlikely they'll be on alert for outlier girls to hunt down tonight. That's what makes it an opportune time to raid their camp. I am not in District Eleven, disguising myself as the daughter of a wealthy landowner to steal valuable jewelry. I am not stealing another tribute's token in the Training Center. If I am caught, I am as good as dead.

I will not be caught. I have looped my legs through a cargo net, and I spy from my concealed position. The girl from Two, Eliza, is on night watch. She sits silently, fiddling with a shuriken, on the top of the pedestal. I watch as a parachute floats down next to her, making a noiseless entrance. From it she withdraws a long strip of something, and I see a twinkle of metal. I remember that she trained with throwing knives, and I instantly put the pieces together. She'll be even more lethal with those in her hands, but she slides the bandolier into her jacket instead of slinging it across her shoulder. I feel around in my own jacket and discover a large hidden pocket. Eliza is hiding her new weapons from her allies so she can surprise them.

I track her movements only vaguely. My attention is focused on the bounty she's guarding. It's all piled up on her left side, just a little behind her. I acquired a small backpack at the Cornucopia, and I unzip it as quietly as I can, propping it up against the edge of the Cornucopia. The thunderstorm is noisy, and it'll help cover any sounds I might make. I creep forward and feast my eyes on all of the glorious things that will soon be in my possession. First up are the three full bottles of water. I slip them into my enormous jacket pocket. Then comes a sack of apples, two loaves of bread that I tuck under my arm, and a tube of crackers. I head back to arrange them in my backpack. Now it's time for the really difficult task. A lot of the food is in crinkly packaging, so I have to leave it. Eliza is less than six inches in front of me, and I can't risk her noticing me.

Instead I go for the weapons. They're the closest thing to Eliza, and I have to gingerly lift up her hair, since it's laying on top of them. I spot a bullwhip so I take it first, then pick up a machete. The only warning that I get is the creaking of her joints when she stands up. I instantly flatten against the ground behind the pile, but no, she's walking away from me. She disappears into the Cornucopia, and I take my chance to snag a few sachets of food. One makes a loud crackle as my hand presses down on it, and Eliza shoots up, emerging from the Cornucopia poised to attack, a shuriken in her hand.

I can't afford to freeze, so I take a chance and sprint for my pack, shoving in my new supplies and zipping it shut as I run. The pounding of my footfalls on the metal seems to rouse some of the other Careers, and Eliza's district partner stumbles out bleary-eyed with a dagger in hand. I throw one hand on the edge of the cargo net and slide down, sustaining a painful rope burn, and tumble to the ground. Still holding my pack, I run for the hills. A couple of knives come at me, probably thrown by the One boy, and although they'd make a fine addition to my arsenal, I'm too vulnerable to the other Careers to take them. A third knife smacks into the back of my arm, and I almost drop the backpack, but I can't give it up now, so I run until I can no longer hear their shouting.

Nobody comes after me. They will in the morning, though, and as the storm rages above me, I'm at least sort of okay. I travel as the night wears on, interspersing my quick walking with some jogging when I've caught my breath enough, until I'm suddenly out of the rain. My boots do not sink into the terrain here. Whatever surface I'm on is soft and springy, and I switch on my flashlight to see it more clearly. Distinctive green blades shoot up from the ground. I'm out of the woods, way from the mountains. Now I stand at the edge of a pasture.

I come to the conclusion that something's not quite right with it, but it's nevertheless preferable to the Careers and coldness of whatever lies behind me. Then, suddenly, a massive, lumpy silhouette appears in my peripheral vision. The second I train my flashlight beam on it, I gasp. I'm not one to be taken aback by things, but I bet you'd gasp too if you were alone at night and saw a bull the size of a house.

Hey y'all!

I know a few of you have ordered sponsor gifts that didn't appear in this chapter. Don't worry, they'll be in the next one. If you check my profile, you'll notice that the gift prices have risen. I'd advise you to save your sponsor points for a while, so you'll be able to afford things for your favorite tributes later in the Games. The next update will probably be on Sunday, but it might be postponed. My school year ends on 26 May, and since I have to prepare for final exams and maintain the highest grades possible, fanfiction is not my main priority this month. Updates will probably be spotty for a few weeks. I'm not forgetting about you, I just have some stuff I have to take care of.

Although I can't promise that I'll make it happen, I can promise that I'll do my best to release all seven chapters that have been scheduled in the days leading up to 26 May. My side projects are still on the table, as they're much smaller, so the monthly update to my Mary Sue guide is still going to take place, and my Titus oneshot will also be released during this time. These projects combined will have a lower word count than most of the chapters of this story, which is why I know I will be continuing them.

I am planning to update very frequently from 27 May onward. I'm still available to PM if you have questions, but I'll be less active this coming month, and I just wanted to give y'all a heads up. I'm so excited to power through my final month of school this year, and I promise I'll be back to normal when summer break begins!
