Hello, it has been forever and I'm so sorry. Hope you've all been keeping safe this past year. I'm not entirely happy with this chapter but I've gone over it so much and can't make it sit right with me but you guys deserve for this to come out.
Things had been going too well for the Pack and coven. That's the only reasonable explanation for why it would all crumble around them at once.
"They're not going to be happy," Collin mumbled, his face in a worried droop. "What if they don't accept us?"
"They'll accept you both," Sam reassured. "I'm the one in for an earful."
Neither one of the pups responded or tried to dispute his claim, because he was right. He'd fucked up big time; things were meant to go his way and yet his entire world had crumbled around him.
Screams.
Flashes of green and red.
Adrenaline coursing through the veins, the heart beating too fast.
Screams.
Pain.
Terror.
"I'm going to kill you, little Mudblood."
Jacob sat on the park bench, light had faded a while ago and though he stared at many faces, hoping, wishing for an imprint to occur, he couldn't help but want to be back with the Pack. He rubbed a hand down his face, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees as he cradled his head. His gut was telling him to go home, to be there, but he couldn't figure out why.
Maybe the Pack was expanding? Maybe the twins had decided that they wanted to get away from Sam? Maybe Sam was trying to extend an olive branch?
Maybe it was something to do with Bella?
Leah padded quietly on her four feet as she made her way to the two sleeping wolves. She smiled internally at the puppy dreams; Seth chasing bunnies, and Hermione picturing fireworks. It was cute, and safe, and she wanted to curl up with them and lose herself in their dreams. If she was lucky, she'd even get to experience something just as soft and sickeningly sweet.
She stumbled, her legs almost giving way as she was overcome with pain. She couldn't hold back the low whine that escaped her.
"Leah?" Jared called, raising from his seat as he watched her. "What's going on?"
She tried to get her breathing back under control, tried to get strength back in her legs, but before she could manage it, more pain raced through her and she collapsed to the floor. Dazedly, she noticed Seth was now awake and whining alongside her.
Hermione's left ear twitched, her nose scrunched, but she didn't wake up.
"Fred? George? Paul?" Jared called, exchanging looks with Quil and Embry. "Something's wrong."
The wizards and the Beta raced out of the house, Jasper following, as they took in the sight of the two wolves that were occasionally writhing in pain.
"What happened?" Paul snapped, his eyes glued onto Hermione until he realised that she was still asleep, and unaffected.
"We don't know," Embry answered, "Leah collapsed, Seth woke up and they're both in pain from nowhere."
"I'll shift, loop myself in," Paul said.
"No," Quil said. "You're the guy in charge. If it's transmittable, you need to be in control. I'll go." He didn't let anyone argue or talk him out of it as he quickly kicked his shorts off and shifted. Immediately falling from where he stood.
"Looks likeā¦" Fred murmured, exchanging looks with George.
"So much for sleeping peacefully," he replied just as softly, his eyes falling on the smallest wolf.
"What are you on about?" Paul asked.
"Looks like the after effects of a curse," George offered, his hand slowly adjusting his grip on his wand. Paul's brow furrowed, confused as to how so many of them would have been hit by it. "Tell me, can you share dreams in wolf form?"
"Oh, fuck," Paul breathed, his heart breaking as it suddenly made sense. "Hermione."
Jacob's stomach twisted uncomfortably as the feeling of off got considerably worse. He started making his way back to the car to head back, see if everyone was okay and vowed to ignore the Bella issue for a little bit longer.
"We're nearly there," Sam offered the kids, and God, they were kids. They might have the appearance of men that were ten years older than them but no, they were still children. "You two will be fine."
"So will you," Collin said. "We all love you, even if you have been angry lately."
"I doubt they all love me," Same chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. "I've been a dick and deserve everything I get."
"We're a Pack," Brady said. "A family. You'll be fine."
Hermione woke up with a gasp, her limbs shaking as she tried to gather enough strength to stand. She needed to get away, needed to run, she couldn't be captured. She wouldn't make it through another torture session. Not with Bellatrix.
"Hermione?"
Her head shot up, focusing in on Fred, George standing at his side.
"Hey, little sister, you good?"
Good? How could she be good? No, she tried to answer, but all that came out was a bark. A bark? She looked down at herself, noticing the four legs, the copious amounts of fur and the new closeness to the ground.
"Hermione?"
She scrambled to her feet at the unfamiliar voice. Everything was wrong! What had happened to her? Where was she? Who was here?
She growled in frustration, tentatively stepping in George's direction, just to be cut off by a larger wolf who growled back at her.
She growled back, her footing more confident. She didn't know why her first instinct was to growl, she didn't even know why she was a wolf, but she knew that he was the one thing standing between her and her family. So she lunged.
The larger wolf evidently didn't expect her dart forward and bury her teeth in his leg, but it didn't take long for him to quickly counter and shake her off. She tried to cling on but she wasn't a match for his size or strength and went skidding back along the grass. She didn't stay down for too long, knowing that he'd finish the job easier if she didn't get up.
"Hermione! Seth!"
"I can't touch her emotions," a smooth voice said, "she's blocked off."
"Occlumency," George muttered, running his hand down the back of the larger wolf. Her eyes narrowed in on the action and she took a step back, keeping her body low to the ground. He was with them? "She's got a talent for it."
"The phone's ringing," the smooth voice said, speaking up again and - oh Merlin, what was that awful smell? Her nose scrunched as she took another step back and she glanced at where the voice was speaking. Vampire. Vampire? Fuck, things were so twisted and they didn't make sense in her head at all.
"Fuck!" George snapped, running his hand along the flank of the wolf that blocked them. "Now? Seriously?"
A loud cry of pain from the house caused all heads to turn. Hermione tilted her head curiously, wondering if it was someone that she knew and whether they were torturing her for information about Harry. She'd be next.
"Bella's gone into labour!"
"Double fuck!" Fred said. "Are you guys cursed or what?" He took a step towards Hermione, lowering himself to his knees so he was closer to her height. "Come on," he urged. "That's your cousin in there and-" He was cut off with a threatening growl as she lowered herself, getting ready to lunge or run. How dare they even aim for her cousin. How had they even heard of her? She'd done everything she could to keep the american side of her family a secret.
"Hermione, please," George called, sidestepping the large wolf and making his way over to them. "We need you to think and focus for a minute. The war is over. You're safe. You're in America, in Forks with Bella and Charlie and Jake You're safe. They can't get you anymore."
She lowered her lips, hiding her bared teeth but still held her position, ready to bolt at a moments notice, and wasn't that a thing? Why the heck was she a wolf?
"You need to come back to us darling," a voice called, dragging her attention away from the twins and her furry appendages, to a very nice male figure. "You don't remember me right now and that's fine, but you know, deep down, that you can trust me and that your safe. You know it, you can feel it; but right now, in that house is your cousin and she's pregnant and having a vampire's baby and we need you here and we need you to help her."
Her eyes widened almost comically as she straightened. A vampire baby? Surely that wasn't real? What would it even be? Half human, half vampire? All vampire? All human with a dislike of the sun?
"Shift back," he pleaded. She stamped her feet at him, frustrated. She didn't even know how she was a wolf, so how was she going to know how to turn back into a witch? "Okay, just focus on being human, picture it, calm down and focus on it. Your fingers, your toes, your hair and eyes. Every single thing that makes you human."
One of the wolves that had been sat quietly, so quiet that Hermione wasn't even sure if she remembered even realising it had been there, stood and slowly stepped forward, before shifting back into a naked woman.
She yipped in shock and jumped back. Naked?! Was she going to be naked? This was so weird. She was definitely convinced that this wasn't some sort of trap by Death Eaters at this point. They weren't that creative.
"We don't really have time for this," the vampire said. "Bella's labour is progressing very quickly and we need Carlisle."
Fred and George exchanged a look, before Fred nodded, standing up and apparating away.
"Right," George said with false cheer. "Let's get you back to human."
Yeah, Hermione huffed internally. A naked human in front of a wolves and vampires who she didn't know. Yeah right.
