"Why don't you go get ready for bed. I'll be right in." Eva dragged her feet up the stairs into the house. It was nearly nine o'clock, almost four hours after we had stepped foot into the emergency department. She had been given a new medication while there and seemed to be responding well so Natalie had discharged her with instructions to take it easy tomorrow and let it continue to take its course.
Throwing my keys on the counter, I washed my hands and reached into the fridge to pull out the container of soup. My adrenaline was wearing down the minute I sat down. It was the first time I didn't have any pressing cases or someone needing my attention.
"I'm all ready for bed." Eva walked into the room wearing a pink shirt and white pajama bottoms with red hearts all over them. "I brushed my teeth. Can you tuck me in?"
"I would be glad to tuck you in." Pulling myself off the stool, we started walking side by side to her room. As she hopped in, I pulled the sheet over her body first and then her blanket. "Are you still feeling okay?"
"Mhm." She poked at her belly through her covers, as if she was trying to convince me she was okay now. I had believed that once, but I would believe it when she was back to her normal self. "My stomach doesn't hurt as much anymore."
"Hopefully tomorrow it will hurt even less." I decided not to clue her in to what I was thinking, rather offering her a small smile as she settled further into her bed.
"Hailey?" She frowned, her forehead creasing with concern as her face poked out behind her blanket. "I don't want to go back to the hospital." This was the second time she had mentioned this. I had learned that if something was said more than one time, it was something to pay attention to.
"I hope you don't have to. Truth is, we don't know if you will or you won't have to in the future. The one thing you can be sure about is Dr. Manning and Dr. Halstead are doing everything they can to help you."
"I know."
"Something you want to tell me?" I questioned, sitting on the edge of her bed as I lightly pulled the blanket away from her face. "Like earlier when you didn't want to go into the hospital." She sunk down into her bed, the blanket shifting back and forth as she shook her head in response.
"No." Her muffled but firm reply came about ten seconds later from underneath the blanket. It looked like I wasn't going to get an answer right now. I knew pressuring her wasn't going to help either of us, especially when both of us were exhausted.
"Alright. I'm going to bed." I patted the empty space between her and me. "Goodnight." I got no response even after I had turned off her light. I sighed as I walked back into the kitchen, taking in the faint scent of soup, and remembered I had been heating it up before tucking her in.
I quickly took the bowl out of the microwave, setting it on the counter and sighing. I hardly had an appetite lately, which in the back of my mind I was wondering why that was. I had felt a little off since arresting Booth, but I always assumed that would just go away in time. Maybe Natalie was on to something when she talked about getting a good night's sleep. I hadn't had one for a while, so it was probably about time I did.
Grabbing a paper towel and spoon, I checked to make sure my soup was hot enough before turning off the light and made my way towards my bedroom. Setting it down on the nightstand, a slight light was filtering through the window as I twisted the knob to my lamp.
Leaning back against my pillow, I placed my soup in my lap and thought about my day. How things had changed since welcoming Eva into my home. She had been so quiet when she had first arrived. I never believed it would stay that way, I just never thought she would change so fast.
Finishing up my last bite, I walked back into the kitchen and washed out my bowl without turning the lights back on before walking back into my room to change into something more comfortable. I chose a white shirt and black sweatpants and settled into bed. I turned the light off, trying hard to close my eyes and sleep, although my mind had other ideas and felt like it was spinning through questions I didn't have answers to.
"Hailey?" I heard the door creak slightly before her voice echoed through the darkness, then I listened as her feet padding over to my side of the bed. I don't know how long it took to doze off, but I was halfway to falling asleep when she entered my room. "I didn't get to tell you goodnight. It made me sad I didn't."
"I'm glad you did." I yawned and stretched my arms out in front of me as I looked over at my alarm clock. It was nearly ten-thirty which meant I had maybe been dozing on and off for the past hour.
"I never got to tell my parents I loved them." Her voice was filled with sadness, which made me wonder through my grogginess if that had something to do with her reluctance to talk about things with me. "Or to tell them goodnight." Reaching my hand over to the lamp, a soft light flooded the room. I then pushed back the comforter, patting it in invitation to sit next to me. I thought she would be reluctant to do so, but she happily hopped in beside me and laid her head down on the other pillow.
"I don't know anything about losing parents, but I would imagine it's been difficult not being able to do or tell them what you want to."
"I want to tell them so many things." She frowned deeply as she turned her head to the side to look at me turning fully on her back and rubbing at her eyes. "Then I remember they're not here anymore."
"Like telling them goodnight." A picture was forming in my head about what could be going on, although I was sure there was more to it. "That's why you didn't want to go without telling me tonight." She nodded subtly, which spoke volumes, especially with her shutting down earlier.
"Can I sleep here tonight with you?" She begged softly, her voice hiccuping as she asked for my permission to stay close. How could I say no to that?
"Sure. Hop in." It took her a second to realize I had said yes, but as soon as I did, she pushed herself underneath the covers. "Goodnight, Eva."
"Goodnight." She hummed softly, turning on her side towards me as I reached my arm back towards the lamp. The room filled with darkness once again as her breathing evened out within a few minutes.
