Chapter 53: Meeting the rest of the family
Next Afternoon
After the family had lunch, Becky, since she already knew what was going on, showed up with the kids so B.J. had someone to play with/be distracted while Billy was out, Sara, Billy and Juliet headed for the airport.
About 15 minutes after they arrived and waited, the passengers started to come into the airport, and when Sara and Grissom's eyes connected, she was itching to go right to him, but she held back so she could greet their children first.
After a warm welcome between her and Even, Sara brings her daughter in her arms. "Your father told me that you and Adrian broke up, are you ok?"
Mother and daughter pulled back, and the younger one nodded with a smile. "Really, I'm ok, mom."
Sara believed her, but she looked a little sad as she continued. "I feel like we missed out on a bonding moment."
Faith smirked. "Like what, eating a couple bowls of ice cream and watching sappy movies?"
"Well, now that you mentioned it, yeah."
Faith then shook his her head. "It's ok mom, I know how busy you..."
Sara cuts her off with emotion as she cupped her daughter's cheek. "Hey, I will always make time for my daughter, especially in her time of need, ok?" Trying to keep her emotions in tact, Faith nodded before Sara continued with a smile. "So, now that we got that settled, pick a day, we have a date on the couch, and I'm marking it in pen."
Faith started to smile as she replied. "If we can change the sappy moves into action ones, you're on."
Sara chuckled with a nod. "You got it, we'll plan more later."
"Ok."
She brings her daughter in her arms again and whispered. "I love you, sweetie. I hope you really know how much."
"I love you too, mom." As they pulled back, Faith smirked again. "Now go see dad, I know you're dying to."
Sara chuckled with love in her eyes, and after removing her hand from her daughter's cheek, she headed straight to her husband's waiting arms, and the moment he wrapped them around her, she sighed in content, feeling like she was home again. She learned a long time ago that it didn't matter where they lived, as long as she was in Grissom's arms, she was home.
A moment passed between them before she pulled back to look in his eyes, and while they were both showing how happy they were to see one another, there was so much more going on, including exhaustion, which she wanted to remedy that, but first they had to take care of something a little more serious.
They kiss softly before pulling back again so they could head out of airport since all they brought was their carry-on bags.
Sara stopped the borrowed mini van in the parking lot to the Los Angeles crime lab, and Grissom, Billy and Juliet got out, but before Sara does, she turns her body to look at her two youngest sitting in the back row and asked. "You want to stay in here?" Both of them sadly nodded, which Sara understood, so she gave them a reassuring smile. "It's ok, just don't ever think it means you didn't care."
After they nodded again, Sara got out of the vehicle and shut the door before heading towards the entrance with her husband, Billy and Juliet.
When they walked into the lab, Sara lead the way to the receptionist and spoke in a polite, but business like tone. "Excuse me, but can I speak to Frank Miller?"
The mid 30's, red haired, blue eyed, slim build receptionist nodded with a smile as she picked up the phone receiver. "Yes, one moment please." Sara nodded before turning from the desk so she could be closer to her family.
No more than 2 minutes later, they hear a male's voice. "Mrs. Grissom?"
Sara turned around with a smile. "Yes."
Frank smiled while holding out his hand. "Frank Miller. It's nice to finally put a face to a name, your father raves about you every time I see him."
Sara smiled shyly as she shook his hand. "I'm pretty sure he embellishes some stories a little."
Frank chuckled with a nod while they released hands. "Yeah, maybe, but that's just what parents do, especially when they are very proud of them."
Sara nodded in agreement before Frank held out his hand towards Grissom. "Which that would make you Dr. Grissom?" Grissom nodded while shaking his hand before Frank continued. "And he's very proud of you too."
Grissom just nodded again, and while they released hands, Billy stepped forward and held out his hand. "I'm Billy Grissom, and I wanted to thank you for finding my son."
Feeling the air shift, Frank nodded as he took the young man's hand. "You're welcome. How's he doing?"
As they release hands, Billy spoke. "I know it's going to take time, but he's slowly getting there."
"I'm glad to hear that."
After Billy nodded, he introduced Juliet to him, before Frank got the family their visitor passes and lead them towards the morgue.
When they walked into the hall that lead them to the room, the family stopped while Frank went in, then a moment later he walked back out into the hall and cleared his throat. "Whenever you are ready."
They nodded before Billy spoke with emotion. "Thank you."
"You're welcome, and let me give you my condolences."
After one more nod, Billy took a breath while closing his eyes, then he opened them and spoke softly. "Ok, I'm ready."
Sara placed a hand on his shoulder and asked. "You want any of us to come in there with you?"
He turned and shook his head. "No, thank you, I need to do this on my own."
Both Sara and Grissom nodded while Billy looked at Juliet, and she gave him a reassuring smile. "It's ok, I understand."
He gives her a little smile before kissing her on the cheek, then he turned around and walked into the room to say his emotional goodbye, also vowing to be there for their son, while replaying their relationship, from the moment they met to their last encounter six years ago, in his head like a movie.
By the time he walked out of the room and back into the hall, the transfer paperwork was done, so they all walked out of the lab.
When they arrived back at Maria and Jacob's, they got out of the vehicle and headed for the front door of the house before walking in, which the minute they did, B.J., who was sitting at the coffee table doing his puzzle, gets wide-eyed with excitement. "Daddy!"
Billy, who had felt sadden and drained while 'talking' to Vanessa, suddenly felt a whole lot better after he kneeled down and hugged his son the minute he was in his arms. "I missed you, buddy."
"I missed you too, daddy."
A moment passed before B.J. asked. "Can you help some more with my puzzle?"
He smiled with a nod. "I would love to, but there are a few more people you have to meet first, ok?"
B.J. nodded with a smile before Billy started to stand up while picking him up, then he turned around and pointed to his father first. "Now B.J. this is my father, your grandpa, Gilbert Grissom, can you say hi?"
B.J. looked at his grandfather and smiled. "Hi, grandpa."
Grissom half-sobbed, half-chuckled as he stepped up to the beautiful little boy he was looking at. "Hi, B.J. it is so nice to finally meet you."
"You too."
Grissom walked to his wife while B.J. was getting introduced to his Aunt Faith and Uncle Even.
Not long after the family was distracted with helping B.J. with the puzzle, Sara took her husband's hand and whispered. "Follow me."
He did just that, and she led them towards her old childhood bedroom that was above the garage, which was still a bedroom but there was only one, bigger bed, and when they got into the room, she closed the door and said. "Now lie down."
Feeling a little confused on what was going on, he started to speak. "Uh Sara, should we really be..."
She cuts him off with a pleading look. "Please."
Not able to resist the look, he nodded and walked towards the bed before lying down, and a moment later, she lays down so her head was on his shoulder while her other arm was around his waist, then she closed her eyes with a smile. "Now sleep, we have a few hours before the rest of the family starts showing up."
This evening was going to be the big reveal to the rest of the family, knowing they couldn't keep everybody away from this place for much longer.
He chuckled as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and kissed her head. "I understand now."
Sara yawned before continuing. "I'm exhausted, and while I know it's not all your fault, I'm blaming you anyways."
He then smirked with a suggestive tone. "You've never complained about me making you exhausted before."
Getting his innuendo, she chuckled while lightly hitting his chest. "Alright you, behave. It's sleep time."
He chuckled one more time before replying in a more sincere tone. "Honestly, I could use the sleep too."
"I know, babe." She was fallen fast, but she did manage a 'love you', which he replied the same softly, even though she was already sound asleep, before he closed his eyes and fell asleep almost instantly as well.
2 Hours later
They started to wake up around the same time, and Grissom was the first to speak with a smile, even though she couldn't see it. "So, did I do my job?"
She smiled in return and as she ran her hand up and down his chest before speaking in a suggestive tone. "You normally always do."
Hearing the suggestiveness in it, and knowing exactly how she meant it, made him smile even more, then he cleared his throat and got them back on 'safer' territory. "Then I'm glad I could help." Before she could speak, he whispered after kissing the top of her head. "And in case you're wondering, you did your job too, you always do." Now getting his meaning, she just smiled a little wider and snuggled in his arms deeper with a sigh of content as he kissed the top of her head again.
There were a few moments of silence before she asked. "So, anything happen back home that you haven't gotten a chance to tell me?"
He ran his hand up and down her arm as he spoke. "Actually something did that we need to talk about."
"Oh?"
"Yeah, after our phone call last night, I finally got to the mail and we got a letter from the kids' school."
"What's wrong?"
"I wouldn't think of it as wrong, it's pretty amazing if you ask me."
A beat later with no more words coming from him, she chuckled as she grabbed her husband's shirt and pulled at it lightly as she spoke. "Don't keep me in suspense, tell me."
"Our youngest son has a chance to skip his Freshman and Sophomore years of high school."
Sara lifted her body up so she was still laying on her side but not on her husband. "Really?"
"Yeah, I guess he had taken a placement test." Then Grissom gets a proud look on his face. "And he passed, with flying colors I might add."
At first she was beaming, proud of her son, then she shook her head before asking. "How come we weren't informed with this?"
"I don't know, I thought we could talk to him about it together."
She took a moment to soak in all of what she heard, then she shook her head again as she lowered herself down so she was laying on his chest once again. "Wow, on one hand I'm extremely proud of him, but on the other hand that would feel like we are missing out on two years together before he goes off to college."
"I know honey." He sighed before continuing. "But, I mean maybe we shouldn't have been too surprised of this because it's not like Billy or Faith didn't get a similar shot, they just chose to take the more advanced classes on what they excelled at more so they could keep going to school with their friends."
"Yeah, that's true."
They laid in bed for about another 10 minutes before they got up and headed back downstairs, which of course they got teased, mostly by Becky, taking after her sisters in that department. But after being teased for as long as they've been together, even before that really, they just took it with a smile.
A few more hours later, while Billy and Juliet was hanging out with B.J. in the room the little guy was using, the rest of the family started showing up, and once they were all there, the kids that ranged from 16-5, including Even, went outside to play together while the two three year olds, Hope's first child, a daughter, and Tyreek's third child, also a daughter, stayed inside with them.
When the grown-ups were there they were all settled in the living room, which they were surprised to see Sara and Grissom here since the anniversary party was suppose to be in a few days in Chicago, so Jacob Jr., now 32, asked. "So, what's going on? Why are you guys here?" When Sara raised an eyebrow at him, he smiled while shaking his head. "Not that I am not happy to see you, sis, but what about your anniversary party?"
Sara took a breath before speaking. "Something came up, and we had to cancel it."
Now Tyreek, who was 45, asked. "Something came up here?"
Sara nodded. "Yes." When more confusion came over their faces, Sara spoke again. "It's best if you heard it from Billy, this is his news."
That response only gave them even more confusion, before Billy cleared his throat and said hi, getting their attention, but because B.J. was already standing in front of him, holding his hand tightly, they were already shocked before Billy even confirmed what was already going through their heads, especially after seeing the little boy's eyes.
He took a second before telling them officially. "As you guys can already tell, this is my son B.J., he's six years old and he loves puzzles."
Tyreek then smirked, which broke the ice immediately. "Just like his dad."
They all chuckled, then not to overwhelm the little boy more than he already was when he saw how much family was here, the Evens 'kids' and their significant others came up to him one by one to introduce themselves, and once they were done, they took the boy outside so he could met their kids/teenagers, which he was immediately asked if he could come play with them.
B.J. looked at his father with a questionable look, and Billy nodded with a smile. "It's ok, go have fun with your cousins."
B.J. nodded with a smile before he rushed towards the others after stepping off the deck.
As Billy watched his son, Tyreek came up behind him and placed his arm around his shoulders and smiled. "Welcome to the club, man."
Billy nodded with a chuckle. "Thank you." He then turned his attention to the rest of the family, overwhelmed by them accepting his son so quickly. "Thank you all."
Michelle walked up to her 'nephew/cousin', cupped his cheek with a smile. "Of course, he's a perfect addition to the family, right everybody?"
If they all had drinks they would have lifted them up, but they did say. "Here, Here." Causing everybody to chuckle before they started hugging him in greeting since they didn't get a chance when they walked into the house earlier.
A little time later, after pizza was ordered and had arrived, they had set up extra round tables on the back deck, and the big family sat down to eat, which as they were doing that, Maria and Jacob was standing just inside the house so they could observe them as they talked, laughed and smiled.
Jacob placed his arm around her shoulders and kissed her temple before whispering. "Well, Mrs. Grissom-Evens, after 38 years, raising 9 kids together, gained 16 grandchildren, which we are more than likely still counting there, with a new great-grandson, not to mention the other countless kids that's been through this house, how do you think we did?"
She shook her head with emotion. "Not complaining one bit." She turned her body and cupped his cheek. "It's been an amazing life so far, and I couldn't have done all of this without you."
Jacob moved a piece of her hair, which has turned a little grayer through the years but still beautiful in his eyes, behind her ear with a loving smile. "You know what, as strong as you are, I think you could have."
"But I'm glad I didn't have to, I love you, so much."
"And I love you."
After they kissed softly, Maria's phone rings, and after seeing who was calling, she answered it, but before she could say anything, Stephanie's voice was heard with a smile/smirk. "I hope you didn't forget about me?"
Maria chuckled. "I could never forget my first born, and now I'm sure there is someone who you would like to meet."
After transferring the call to Video, her and Jacob walked outside before Maria spoke, getting everybody's attention. "Everybody say hi to your sister/aunt/cousin."
She then turned the phone around so her oldest daughter could see them all, and after stopping at the 'Grissom' table, Maria gave the phone to Billy first, they talked for a moment before Billy cleared his throat and said. "Aunt Stephanie, I would like you to meet my son, B.J."
After dinner
Sara and Grissom were in the kitchen getting ready to do the dishes, when Even walked in the room with the last of them, but before he walked out of the room, his parents turned to him and Sara asked. "Can we speak to you for a minute, honey?"
Even nodded as he walked to the barstools at the counter, and once he was settled on one, he asked softly. "Did I do something wrong?"
Both of them shook their heads before Grissom asked. "No son, you didn't."
Sara then added. "But, we would like to ask why you didn't tell us about the replacement test that you took?"
"Oh, that." Before either one of his parents could speak again, Even continued. "I asked them not to tell you if I didn't pass, because I didn't want you to get your hopes up." He then looked down and spoke softly. "I didn't want to disappoint you if I failed."
Sara moved closer to the counter and placed her hands on her youngest son's and spoke softly. "Honey, you could never disappoint us, especially if you did your best." When he looked into his mother's caring eyes, she smiled as she finished. "I hope you know we never expected you to get perfect grades all the time."
Even nodded with a smile, then he smirked. "Even though I do anyways."
They chuckled before Sara removed her hands. "Alright you."
He giggled then asked after taking a breath. "So, how did you find out?"
Grissom answered that. "I got a letter from your school."
With with a little bit of curiosity/excitement, he asked. "Well?"
"You passed with flying colors."
Even had a feeling he did good, but he was shocked by his father's comment. "Wow, really?"
With beaming smiles, both of his parents nodded before Sara asked. "Now very soon, before we enroll you into high school, we need to decide if you want to skip one or two grades."
Even got even more excited about that. "Wait, I can be a Junior this upcoming school year?" After they nodded again, he smiled with a nod in return. "That is so awesome, I want to do that."
Now Sara wanted him to be really sure, even though she could see it in his eyes that this was something he really wanted and there was no convincing him otherwise. "And you're really sure about this? It's not going to be too much for you?"
He was usually confident, especially when it came to academics, and as excited as he was, he was a little worried too, but he did mention while shrugging his shoulders. "I won't know until I try, right?"
Grissom then commented. "He does have a point, and we can move him back if it does become too much."
Even nodded in agreement as he looked at his mom with pleading eyes, since he wasn't one to back down from a challenge without giving it all he had, something his mother was known for as well. "Please mom, let me at least try?"
Sara took a moment before she nodded with a loving smile. "Alright, my youngest, and last child, will be a Junior in the fall."
Even gets up from his seat and runs to the other side of the counter to hug his mom, which Sara wasted little time holding onto her youngest, wanting to hold on to him, figuratively and literally, for as long as she could. "Thank you, mom."
"You're welcome, honey. I love you."
"I love you too."
After father and son shared their hug and said I love you to one another, Even walked out of the room, leaving his parents alone, and when they were, they headed back to the sink as Sara spoke with a smile. "Well, it seems our children's lives are changing for the good, our oldest is embarking on a new life as a father (She cleared her throat and spoke softly this time, almost a whisper)...And a soon to be husband."
Grissom raised an eyebrow. "Really? What do you know about that?"
She smirked. "Just a feeling I'm getting."
Grissom chuckled and shook his head. "You and your feelings." When she gave him a look with a raised eyebrow he became more serious. "Not that I doubt them, you have a very good track record."
Sara nodded with a smile before she finishes. "Our daughter is going to be a Senior this year with an already acceptance letter to Harvard, and our youngest is heading straight to Junior year."
He then smirked with proudness in his eyes. "I say we did very well then."
Sara chuckled with a nod in agreement, then he kissed her temple before they continued on with the dishes, feeling pretty good on where their family was headed.
