"Obi-wan, what are we doing here?" despite Anakin's memory loss, he has seemed to have reentered the stage where he questions almost everything Obi-wan does.
"Hush Anakin," just like he did the day before, Obi-wan tugged on the hood that covered Anakin's head, pulling it further over his eyes to conceal his face. It was the middle of the night, so almost no one would be awake to see the two Jedi enter the apartment building," I'll explain everything when we get there, just be patient." Anakin huffed before gently knocked away Obi-wans hand, letting Obi-wan look at his scowl.
"You still haven't explained everything to me Obi-wan." Obi-wan opened his mouth to give Anakin a very short explanation, but cut himself off when the elevator door opened.
"Hush now." He didn't give Anakin the chance to protest his answer, walking out of the elevator to approach the only door that was on the floor. He heard Anakin let out another huff of annoyance before following him.
Obi-wan stood at the door, hesitating to knock on the door. How was he supposed to explain to Padme that Anakin was still alive, but didn't remember her? He hadn't seen her since he told her the news. The both of them had thrown themselves into their work, Padme especially, it was like she dropped off the surface of the planet for a few months before reappearing.
"I don't know what you're waiting for but," Anakin reached out and rang the doorbell, much to Obi-wans horror," Its late and I want to go to sleep."
"Anakin!" Obi-wan practically hissed out his name from a mix of horror and anger. It was yet another sign of Anakin's former personality resurfacing but it was the wrong time for that.
"What? You're the one who told me that its better just to get it over with than just standing around." Again, if it was the right time, Obi-wan would have jumped for joy that Anakin remembered that saying, especially since he told Anakin that years ago. But it was still the wrong time for this type of attitude.
"Ana- "Obi-wan cut himself off as something inside the apartment fell to the floor, made a loud noise that was followed by a string of curses. The two of them exchanged looks and without exchanging any words. Obi-wan waved his hand to the side, quickly gaining access to the apartment.
The apartment was dark, which made sense since it was the middle of night and the average person would be asleep already. Obi-wan entered the apartment with Anakin right behind him, his hand placed on his lightsaber as he walked in. The dark apartment was illuminated by the nearby light of an adjoining room.
"Padme?" Obi-wan whispered her name, he had no idea if the sound was a simply something falling down by accident, or if it meant something a little bit more sinister. Obi-wan slowly walked forward, taking his lightsaber off its clip when he heard a longer string of curses and hisses of pain.
"Padme?" his call was ignored again, Obi-wan finally made it to the doorway of the lit-up room. He leaned against the wall for a few seconds before turning around the corner, lighting up his lightsaber as he did so.
He blinked in surprise when he saw Padme on her hands and knees, mopping up milk with a dishrag. She jumped in surprise when she heard the sound of the lightsaber and turned around with wide eyes.
"Obi-wan?!" Obi-wan sighed and extinguished his lightsaber before walking over to Padme, helping her back up onto her feet.
"I called out for you Padme, I thought something may have happened when you didn't answer." Padme did not look relieved that it was Obi-wan, not in the slightest bit, instead, she tried to divert Obi-wans attention, positioning herself so she was between the counter and the Jedi.
"I see," she stepped to the side as Obi-wan tried to look at what she was hiding, blocking his view again," It is quite late for a visit Obi-wan, people might suspect something if they hear about this." That was an obvious 'I don't want you here' if Obi-wan had ever heard one.
"I know, but I have news for you and you wouldn't let me leave alive if I kept from you any longer…" Obi-wan trailed off as something caught his eye. Padme seemed to realize what he was looking at that because she closed her eyes and let out a sigh of defeat.
"Padme…" He couldn't stop staring at the high chairs that were in the corner, a blue and pink one, there were small empty containers of baby food on the trays of both of them, leaning to the side, he saw the containers of baby formula that the senator was trying to hide" …I was unaware you had children here with you." Padme ran her hand over her face.
"Yes well…it would be frowned upon if a senator bore a Jedi's children. I kept them a secret for their own safety as well as mine."
oh…
OH
O H
Obi-wan dragged his hand down his face tiredly. Of course, it was this complicated, almost everything was complicated when it came to Anakin.
Wait, she said children? As in plural, as in more than one.
Obi-wan slowly looked at the high chairs again and then back at Padme, she sighed again while dropping her head.
"…Twins, we had twins. I…I was four months pregnant when Anakin died, I was waiting for him to come back home to tell him the news," tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke," I would have told him sooner if I knew what would happen." Padme dabbed at her eyes with the sleeve of her night shirt, Obi-wan looked over his shoulder to make sure that Anakin was still there, in the typical Anakin fashion, he was gone.
And then the sound of a baby's laughter travelled through the air, making Obi-wan close his eyes and ask the force for patience while Padme sighed in defeat again.
"Luke must have woken up again…Would you like to meet them?" Padme looked up at Obi-wan guiltily," I know I should have told you about them earlier, I know how much you loved Anakin but I just wanted to keep them safe." Obi-wan put his hand on her shoulder, making her stop and look at him again, which he returned with a reassuring smile.
"It's ok, I understand," he was certainly a little bit bitter that Padme had kept his best friends' children a secret. But he understood, if he knew, he would have helped her keep them a secret. Obi-wan reached out with the force, a smile going across his face as he sensed three bright lights together. He could sense Anakin's wonder and the confusion his unbridled joy was causing, he knew that Anakin had somehow managed to find his kids.
"Padme, I have something to tell you," he started to lead her out of the kitchen," I have to warn you that he doesn't remember anything, but with time, he will remember everything, including you." Padme looked very confused but didn't question it as he started to lead her to her children's room.
She frowned when she heard her child's giggling again and reached out to push open the door, the door slowly swinging open at her touch. Obi-wan felt her tense up under his hand.
Anakin was holding onto the small child, the small hands tugging on Anakin's curls as the little boy babbled. Anakin had a wide smile on his face as he stared at the baby boy, tears running down his face.
"I'm sorry," Anakin held the boy's hand and held it up to his mouth, giving it a small kiss as he talked to the baby boy," I don't know why I'm crying, but you're so beautiful." Obi-wan could sense her inner turmoil but stayed silent as she processed what she was looking at.
"…Anakin," Padme's voice was breathless as she walked forward. Anakin snapped to attention at his name, taking a step back when he realized that she was getting closer.
"Oh, I'm sorry, its just that he was fussy and he was starting to cry, and…" Anakin trailed off as Padme tenderly put her hand on his cheek, making him look at her. Confusion clouded his eyes. Obi-wan, who had been watching, left the doorway to enter the living room, giving them the privacy they needed.
"…Anakin, you're alive," Padme's voice was quiet as she ran her thumb over his cheek, but it was so loud to Anakin. His voice left him. he felt something in his mind fill up again, a name coming to the front of his mind.
"…Padme…" he said the name before he realized what he was doing.
A smile spread across her face before she pulled him into a tight hug, taking care that she didn't crush their child. Even though he was extremely confused, Anakin let himself be pulled into the hug. He had almost no idea who she was, he only knew her name. he had never seen her in his dreams, not like he had seen Obi-wan and Ahsoka, but something just felt right, something told him that he belonged there, in Padme's arms with a child in his arms.
"Welcome home." Anakin closed his eyes as Padme started to run his fingers through his hair, stress he didn't even know he was there leaving his body as he relaxed against her body.
"I'm home."
