Chapter 54 - Green, Blue and White

The Doctor popped back in the closet of their flat. He rubbed his head and sighed. Everything was very quiet. It was 10:45 pm.

'I'm back. Where is everyone?' the Doctor asked Rose.

'In the sitting room. Come see this.' Rose told him.

He walked down the hallway and noticed that Genie and Tony's bedroom doors were shut. He saw Jack, Jake and Rose looking at the diamond that the Meridaians had given to them. The sitting room was dark, and the diamond's color illuminated the room. It was glowing green. The Doctor sighed and put his hands in his pockets.

"Children asleep?" he asked quietly.

Rose looked back at him. "Yes. Come here and look at this."

The Doctor walked over and wrapped his hands around her waist, pressing his front to her back. He leaned in and kissed her on the cheek.

Jack was watching the diamond and didn't notice what the Doctor had done. "This has a perception filter on it, doesn't it?"

The Doctor nodded. "Yep. I didn't want it to attract attention."

Rose asked, "What is a perception filter?"

"Just that. It keeps you from noticing something that you don't already know is there. How do you think Jackie didn't steal it the night we had everyone over here?" he laughed.

Rose asked, "But, you said it was keeping up with everyone. How did she tell it who she was if she didn't see it?"

The Doctor held her and laughed. "I put it back in the box and had everyone touch it in there. She thought it was part of the wedding ceremony. No one here saw it that night. Except Howie. He called it something I can't even remember. Hell, he probably doesn't remember."

Rose laughed.

Jake was surprised. "That's what that was?"

Jack looked at him. "You were at the wedding?"

Jake smiled proudly, "I was the best man."

Jack smiled and looked as if he approved.

The Doctor asked, "What is the problem?"

Jake didn't take his eyes off of it. "Watch it, mate. It is changing colors. It goes from green to blue to white."

Jack looked at him. "I'm not familiar with this. What do the colors mean?"

The Doctor continued to hold Rose. "Well, green is because of Pete. That means someone is sick. Blue means everything is alright. Which is good because maybe that means Pete will wake up soon. He's sick of being away from everyone and wants to wake up."

Jack asked, "And the white?"

"That means that it knows someone else has came into the family. It is asking for that person to identify themselves."

Jake put his hand on Jack's shoulder. "Oh! That's you then, Jack!"

Jack looked surprised. "Really? That's really neat! Do you want me to do it?"

The Doctor raised up and ran his hands up and down Rose's arms. He shrugged his shoulders. "That's why it's there. I have no idea how we will ever get you back to the Prime Dimension. I do know you go back at some point, at least I think you do. But, it could be a very long time from now."

Jack smiled as he looked at the Doctor. "What do I do?"

"Just touch it and say your name, and where you are from. That's all." the Doctor instructed.

Jack looked back at them and rubbed his hands together. He walked over to it and right before he could put his hand to it, it turned bright red.

"I didn't touch it!" Jack exclaimed and threw his hands up.

The Doctor let Rose go and put his hand in his hair. "No. That's not good. That's danger! Ugh! I have a date tonight, damn it! Shakes! Lewis! Whoever is on duty! Get in here!" the Doctor called.

Shakes and Sam opened the door immediately.

Shakes asked. "What's wrong?"

The Doctor pointed at the diamond. "There's trouble. Who's at the hospital with Pete and Jackie?"

"Aemilius and Lavatch." Shakes answered. He seemed to think for a moment. "The trouble is there! We'll go immediately! Alert the secondary guard!"

Shakes and Sam disappeared.

Rose turned around and looked at the Doctor. "What is going on?"

He put his hands on her shoulders. "Sweetheart, I don't know. Stay here with Jake. I'll go and see if I can help."

Jack spoke up, "I'll join you. Let's go!"

Rose looked frightened. The Doctor saw the fear on her face. "I won't say it."

Jack walked over and put his hand on the Doctor's watch and said, "I'll bring him back, Rose. Jake. Keep the lady safe."

They popped away.
