Chapter betaed by the wonderful Miette and dstone12 :)

Severus crossed his arms as he looked firmly at the Goblin facing him.
"Master Hoardrock. You know I truly appreciate your dedication to ensuring that my House's business flourishes. However, I believe we must not rush into too many Contracts and Alliances. I remind you I became a Head of House less than five weeks ago. We've already confirmed the Alliances with the Houses of Malfoy, Prince and Wilkes, as well as with Clan Röykkiö, Pack Kyirong and Pack Ssylka. In a few minutes, we will also confirm the Contract with Family Ressurs. Why do you already want to make overtures to Land Utpatti?"

While Severus had eventually come to consider Muśkēlī a friendly acquaintance, he had never managed to truly become comfortable with the Fey. Her presence held a hint of wildness and unknown which unnerved him, even though his Sense was probably only reacting to the dual nature of the Fae who existed on two planes at once. It gave him a headache just trying to imagine how it was possible.

"As you're certainly aware, Master Daoack, Clan Röykkiö has high hope for their future, and you are one of their assets. Alliances between Faes and Wizards are not common, especially because in the past, many Wizards have not profited from these alliances. Alliances between Fae and Goblins are only slightly more common, and most of the time, they can be summed up to an agreement of trade as neither party wants to take the risks of becoming too deeply involved with one another."

"I fail to see how telling me this will convince me to offer an alliance to Land Utpatti," answered Severus as he felt a sense of foreboding spread through him.

Hoardock would not insist on this proposal only to gain a new trade Contract.

"Where is your sense of adventure, Lord Caspian?" asked the Goblin with a toothy smile.

Already overwhelmed by my little Horcruxes problem, thought Severus wryly. He settled on raising an eyebrow at Hoardock.

"More seriously. Your stay in Kyirong was really fortuitous as you managed to cross paths with the heir of Land Utpatti and impress her," explained Hoardrock.

Severus had realised that his group of friends from Kyirong was quite elitist. Before they had become his friends, they had been his attackers, if only for a test. Without Dhaal's help during said test, their first meeting might not have ended as positively as it had. They could have become enemies instead. Severus had to wonder what had been the hopes of those who had chosen them as his testers. He was certain he would never know.
As such, he was not overly surprised to learn that Muśkēlī was Land Utpatti's heiress. However, he had not realised he had impressed her to the point of making an Alliance with her Land a possibility.

"We have reasons to believe that from then on, Land Utpatti has followed your evolution with great attention," continued Hoardrock. "I'm certain that with the right offering, we could engage the Alliance process with Land Utpatti."

"And what offering would that be?" asked Severus wearily.

The contents of his current Alliances Contracts were quite common.
His three wizard allies had sworn to sponsor any new potion created by Severus, the only difference between them being that Malfoy House would sponsor him to the European western equivalents of Saint Mungo; Prince House would do the same but for the American and Asian continent; and the Wilkes House would do so for eastern Europe. In exchange, each House would receive a share of the benefits from the sales occurring in the area they had sponsored. Prince House had also agreed on providing materials and plants to House Caspian for a lesser price as they would receive a slightly higher share from the sales than Houses Malfoy and Wilkes.
Moreover, both Malfoy House and Prince House had agreed on a mutual clause of defence between their House and House Caspian. This clause already existed between Malfoy and Prince House, thus tying their three Houses closer. Wilkes House could not be included in the defence clause because they were already vassals to the Malfoys.
The two alliance contracts with Werewolves centred on the Lupacem. Pack Kiyrong would follow and record the behaviours and improvements of their members who used the Lupacem and its associated wand and provide it regularly to Severus in exchange for a lesser price on the Lupacem plus the possibility of the pack working on improving the Lupacem. The various projects aiming to improve the Lupacem and their progression would be shared with Severus regularly and he would supervise the phases he deemed crucial. If any improvement was licensed, its benefits would be split between House Caspian and the Pack. Pack Ssylka had also asked for a lesser price on the Lupacem and its associated wand, as well as for any future improvement of the potion and wand attributed to Severus. In exchange, to the surprise and excitement of Severus, they had sworn to let him study one instance of a single Transitional Werewolf's attempt to become a Full Werewolf and offered support and defence of House Caspian in the event of a dispute with another Pack.
Clan Röykkiö's initial Alliance with Severus had been renewed, the Clan was the only party with the authority to write the Lupacem contracts between Severus and every wizard community where it would be licensed. They had surprised Severus by adding a new clause which guaranteed Severus a refuge on Clan Röykkiö's grounds if needed as well as a defence commitment.
Finally, Family Ressurs was coming to sign a contract that would have Severus work on their equivalent of the Werewolves' Lupacem in exchange for the funding of his research as well as a hefty number of Galleons if he succeeded. Severus would remain the sole possessor of his invention if he succeeded, but would give the Family a discount on any potions developed.

Considering the previous Contracts, Severus had no idea what he could offer the Faes that would have them offer an Alliance with his House.

Hoardrock smiled almost ferociously.
"Your clan and I have complete faith in you, far more than you possess I believe. I want you to offer to work on a Wall for Land Utpatti that would last forever instead of only a few years."

Severus stared at Hoardrock. This was more than having faith.
"You realise that Walls are far more complex than Bridges to make. I already have no guarantee of succeeding in making the equivalent of the Lupacem for Vampires, and Family Ressurs clearly wrote in the Contract that they did not expect me to work on a complementary Wall with the potion. What you are proposing for the Faes, especially when taking into account that they exist on two planes of Magic, is unheard of and the chances of success are slim!"

"I am well aware of this, as is Sultana Duvidha, the leader of Land Utpatti. Faes are secretive, but it's obvious they have already researched this subject and failed to come up with a satisfactory solution. The damages caused by a Wall crumbling can incapacitate a Fae forever, it's far more dangerous than for a Vampire," answered the Goblin seriously.

"Even if they agreed, I would need to either work with Maverick or to study with him first to be able to create the proper Wall. It could take several years," replied Severus as he thought about everything he would need just to begin working on this project, intriguing though it may be.

"Faes like long term games. I believe we could sign a Contract with a beginning clause. The Contract terms would take effect when you officially began working on the project," explained Hoardrock.

"Alright, let's imagine that they agree to those terms. What would you have me ask for in exchange?" asked Severus, curious.

"I thought that an unlimited access to their texts during the duration of your Contract as well as being taught their specific Magic would appeal to you. In addition to standard research fees of course," answered Hoardrock with a malicious glint in his eyes.

Severus could almost feel drool dribbling on his chin at the idea of studying Fae's Magic, even though he knew there was no guarantee he would be able to use it.

"You make compelling arguments," he admitted to the smug Goblin. "Why don't you draft an… overture, as you say, for our next meeting?"

"It will be ready in two weeks, Lord Caspian," promised Hoardrock.

Despite his perfect Goblin mask, Severus could feel Hoardrock's eagerness at the prospect of this new Alliance. Of course, as Severus' Gringotts representative, the Goblin was interested in Severus' successes and Alliances. But, Hoardrock could not be pushing so hard only to earn a nice bonus from the bank. Severus already had enough on his plate to deal with, but he had to ask.

"Are Clan Röykkiö and Clan Runsaus allied for the next Korkein election?"

The Goblin looked at him blankly.
"There is no official alliance between our Clans."

Of course not. Goblins' politics were a nightmare of complexity. Severus really needed to take the time to learn about his Clan's politics or one day, he would put them in a precarious situation because of his ignorance. Though they should have taken the initiative to teach him if they wanted to avoid any blunders from his part. Were blunders expected from him?

Severus felt a headache coming.

Hoardrock smiled, as if he could read Severus' thoughts, then school his face back to a neutral expression as the rounded paperweight on his desk began to glow.
"Family Ressurs' representatives have arrived. Are you ready, Lord Caspian?"

"You know I am, Master Hoardrock," answered Severus as seriously.

They both got up as the door to Hoardrock's office opened to let the Vampires in.

Severus immediately recognised Vilde, though she was dressed more finely than in Kyirong. The other two Vampires, one male and one female, looked older than her. They both could have been in their early forties, if not for their eyes. Severus would bet they were at least as old as Dumbledore.

"Welcome, Family Ressurs," said Hoardrock as he walked to stand beside Severus. "I am Hoardock, Master of Shields and Self, Gringotts representative of Lord Caspian."

"Welcome, Family Ressurs," repeated Severus. "I am Lord Severus Caspian, Master of Shields and Crossings, Head of House Caspian."

The three Vampires bowed at them.
"I am Matriarch Sæther Ressurs, Mistress of Shadows and Serenity," said the older woman Vampire. "My escorts are Svein Sæther, Master of Words and Rage, and Vilde Sæther, Servant of Shadows and Persistence. Master Sæther and myself are the representatives of Family Ressurs, while Servant Sæther is present as the one who initiated the relationship between Family Ressurs and House Caspian."

Severus felt his curiosity spike as the Matriarch listed their different titles. They seemed to be close to the Goblin's system, yet, each Mastery was linked to a feeling. Drunek had explained at the beginning of his Apprenticeship that Vampires were often led by their desires. It meant their mastery of one feeling had to be important. He had so many questions.

Hoardrock led them to the round table on the right side of his office. The Goblin waited for them to be all sat before speaking.

"Thank you for coming today, Matriarch, Master and Servant," began Hoardrock. "I have prepared the Contracts based on the engagements family Ressurs provided for Lord Caspian when he created his House. I propose that we read them together to see if there are any points of contention."

"Actually, we wish to submit a slightly different proposal to Lord Caspian," answered Master Sæther. "If you are amenable," added the Vampire as he turned toward Severus.

"I am always ready to listen to new proposals," answered Severus while he wondered what could have changed in five weeks to impact the Vampires' proposal.

Vilde was impassive but he thought she found his answer acceptable.

"Thank you," said Master Sæther, smiling to reveal the point of fanged teeth. "Lord Caspian, I understand that you are discreet with important matters," continued the Vampire as his eyes bore into Severus as if trying to read his soul. "I trust that none of what we will discuss today will be used against Family Ressurs."

Severus felt his curiosity grow at the man's words.

"I have no interest in disclosing private information that could weaken our Alliance," answered Severus truthfully. "However, I reserve the right of using this information in the defence of my House and Allies."

The Master studied him for a few seconds before speaking again.
"As Servant Sæther must have told you, Lord Caspian, most Families already possess their own potion that allows their members to control themselves instead of going into a frenzy each time they notice something or someone they wish to possess."

Vilde had only alluded to such a potion, without even detailing what was the Vampire's equivalent to the Werewolves' full moon transformations. From Master Sæther's words and muggle lore, Severus could imagine all too well the damages a Vampire without control could inflict.
Did it mean Vampires also possessed the equivalent of the Ritual that allowed them to control their compulsions? He hoped this Alliance would let him find out.

"These potions are the reasons why, until a few years ago, Vampires and Wizards were on good diplomatic terms," continued Master Sæther. "The Vampire Conclave is far more stable and organised than the Werewolf Council, and an agreement was reached between the British Ministry of Magic and the Conclave in 1515. Vampires are responsible for their own justice even on wizard territory, though a joint hearing will be held if the conflict involves both Wizard and Vampire litigants."

While Severus had known that the Packs interacted with each other, he had not had the feeling that they possessed any kind of official organisation that could speak for the entire werewolf population. As far as he knew, Werewolves fell under the law of the wizarding country they inhabited. He would have to ask Yasha about this Council.
He was very interested by the 1515 Agreement and wondered if it could be used as an argument to have muggleborn children protected even when they lived in the muggle world.

"However, these potions are not harmless to the Vampires who take them, and they are not as effective on made Vampires as on born Vampires," explained Master Sæther. "You must have heard of the Wolfsbane potion that was refused licence by Saint Mungo. I believe it's the equivalent to our potions. Thus, you can imagine that we are very hopeful that you can create for us our own Lupacem."

Severus nodded.
"I understand, and you know I'm really interested in this project. As you must imagine, working closely with Vampires is an opportunity for a new Potion Master such as I. However, please understand that there is no guarantee of success as for all that Werewolves and Vampires can seem to possess similar traits, the need for a Bridge for one and a Wall for the other is a major difference."

Master Sæther nodded.
"We are aware that there is a possibility of failure, and we intend to conserve the initial clause that doesn't require your success for our Alliance to remain, but we have full confidence in your abilities. Most potions don't work as well on Vampires as they do on Wizards, and this is the same for Werewolves. You managed to give the Werewolves the Lupacem, so we believe you will succeed."

Severus once more had the familiar feeling that people put far too much faith in his abilities.

He caught Vilde's gaze and she gave him a slight smile of approval before turning to Matriarch Ressurs. Severus had the feeling they held a silent conversation, and he wondered if some of the rumours were true and Vampires from the same Family could speak telepathically to each other. If that was the case, Vilde was being courteous in showing him that they were talking to each other.
He glanced at Hoardrock who was as impassive as ever, except for a slight upturn of his mouth.

Finally, the Matriarch spoke.
"I believe you now have enough context to apprehend our Alliance proposal, Lord Caspian. Family Ressurs would like you to work on a potion which would be the equivalent for Vampires of the Lupacem. We are not asking for the guarantee of success, however, if you succeed, we would like you to work on an associated Wall. In addition to this particular project, we would like you to work on adapting other potions for Vampires. In exchange, Family Ressurs would allow you to study several of its members as well as give you access to our most precious books and parchments, in addition to funding your research."

"Would Lord Caspian remain the proprietor of all the potions he created or adapted for you, as well as the potential associated Wall, and be allowed to distribute them to other Families?" asked Hoardrock.

The Matriarch looked at the Goblin with a wry smile.
"Of course, Master Hoardrock. And Family Ressurs would be assured a lower price on the potions and Wall than the other Families."

They spent the next twenty minutes finalizing then signing the Alliance contract. Hoardrock gave the Vampires their copy of the contract then, to Severus' surprise, left the room to file away Gringotts' copy.

Master Sæther snapped his fingers and Severus Sensed a spell surrounding them. Instinctively, he raised his various shields and held his Magic ready. The Vampire smirked though he looked at Severus with approval.

"We have a few matters to discuss that are not for Goblins' ears."

Severus carefully prodded the spell around them. He got a Sense of secret and protection from the outside.

"There was no need for theatrics," stated Severus.

Master Sæther's smirk widened. Severus wanted to roll his eyes. How many more tests would he need to pass?
He noticed that Vilde looked pleased while the Matriarch was watching him closely. He realised he was alone in a room with three Vampires. Most Wizards would feel uneasy, even in Gringotts. There were rumours of Vampires ensnaring Wizards without them noticing. He felt merely cautious and curious, though he Sensed to Dhaal to be alert for any change in their Bond. The Thestral Sensed back his agreement as well as a flash of being followed by a crawling Draco.

"Family Ressurs has high hopes of deepening the Alliance with House Caspian once you succeed in creating our Potion," said Master Sæther. "As such, we thought to bring some information to your attention."

That was unexpected. He wondered what such an Alliance would entail, and if it would be compatible with those he had already made.

"I'm listening, Master Sæther," answered Severus.

The Vampire's eyes seemed to sharpen. Or was it his pupil that had changed shape? Was it the sign that he was using an unknown power?
Severus wanted to sigh. Hogwarts' defence courses had not taught him much about either Werewolves and Vampires. From what he had learnt in Kyirong, he could extrapolate he knew almost nothing about Vampires. Instead, he tightened his Occlumency shield.

"What do you think of Prophecies?"

Severus stared at the Vampire. A few months ago, he would have answered that Prophecies were the work of frauds and that they were either so cryptic they could fit any events after the facts, or that they were self-fulfilled by idiots who had believed in them. Today,…

"I don't care much for them. They seem to cause far more headaches and dissension than they're worth."

Vilde's laugh startled them both. She quickly reigned it in but her eyes remained filled with mirth. The Matriarch also seemed highly amused though only her eyes let it show.

"It's an unusual position among Wizards," remarked Master Sæther. "I believe that among all of us children of Magic, only House Elves share your view."

Severus should not have been surprised to hear that House Elves had an opinion on Prophecies. He really needed to speak with Tuei about more than the household and his families.

"We, Vampires, believe that Prophecies are warning of events to come that will shape the future centuries," explained the Vampire. "We know that the Wizards have finally heard their Prophecy last year, making them the last to receive their words this time. It means the changes are close, and the next decades will be essential for the future. Do you know what it said?"

Severus put his hands on the table calmly.
"I have heard about a Prophecy made last year. I have heard the words that composed it as well as the various and contrary interpretations that can be made of it."

Master Sæther nodded.
"Prophecies are complicated to understand. We have several specialists, old Vampires who have studied the Art of reading omens. One of them was killed a few months after your Prophecy was made."

Severus frowned. He had no trouble imagining Lord Voldemort reaching out to a Vampire specialised in prophecies, especially as the Lord had told them he had waited for one year to tell them of the Prophecy because he wanted to be certain of its interpretation. However, why would he have killed the Vampire when he promoted creatures' rights?
Even taking into account how the Lord had changed because of his Horcruxes, what reason could he have for killing the Vampire? The Lord could not have hoped to prevent Dumbledore from interpreting correctly the Prophecy. And as much as Severus despised the Headmaster, he did not see any reason for Dumbledore to kill this Vampire either.

"I offer you my condolences," finally said Severus. " I had no idea such specialists existed, and even less that one had been killed."

"We did not expect you to," answered Master Sæther. "But we think it's one more sign that the coming changes will originate from Wizards. You must be careful."

"I appreciate the warning," assured Severus. "I'm already careful, as the coming elections and the disagreements on both sides have created tensions among Wizards, though they seem to have quieted these past days."

"You won't be surprised that we quite favour Lord Voldemort," stated Master Sæther. "Even more so now that we have reasons to believe that Minister Birkins wishes to renegotiate the 1515 agreement to reduce our rights."

Severus was not shocked, the pro-Muggleborn Minister was doing everything he could to put a leash on non-wizard citizens.

"On what grounds could he argue for this change?" asked Severus.

"He wants to plead that all Vampires are Wizards, which is true if you define a Wizard like a human able to do Magic," explained the Vampire. "Like Werewolves, Vampires can be born or made. Like Werewolves, no magical creature other than Wizards can be made Vampires. However, contrary to Werewolves, Muggles can become Vampires, though they have less chance to survive the turn than Wizards. However, a Muggle turned Vampire becomes able to do Magic, sometimes better than a born Vampire."

It supported Severus' theory that Muggles possessed at least a flicker of Magic and that with the use of Taichichuan, they would be able to use that tiny spark of Magic like all Goblins could. He could not wait to begin studying the Vampires.

"Do you have the Vampire equivalent of Full and Transitional Werewolves?" asked Severus, curious.

"We do," nodded Master Sæther, "but you'll have to wait to work on your potion to gain more information on this point."

Severus did not mind. He was already certain they had their own Ritual. It was so exciting.

"Why does Minister Birkins suddenly want to renegotiate the Agreement?" asked Severus, turning his mind back to the initial subject.

"It has been a demand of his supporters, especially the faction led by Jim Baxter, since his election. However, it was not Minister Birkins' priority as renegotiating the Agreement will obviously be a source of tensions between our Nations, and business between Noble Houses and Noble Families is quite flourishing. He was content to let the Agreement stand as it is. But today, the Werewolves want their own Agreement. Now that you've given them the Lupacem, they can truly build their own society without being impaired by their beast. They will certainly require several years before they reach the point when their Council gains enough official weight to sign an Agreement in the name of all the Packs, but it will come. They will be able to use the 1515 Agreement as a precedent."

Severus could understand the Minister's point of view. He had to be worried of the creation of another nation whose members were much more interlocked in the wizard population than Vampires. Yet, Werewolves were often treated as second-class citizens. Wouldn't it be better for everyone if they had their own government?
Severus realised that Family Ressurs was truly hoping for more than a business Alliance. They knew he supported Lord Voldemort, and they clearly hoped he would support them on this issue in the future.

"I appreciate you sharing this information with me," said Severus.

"Vilde was insistent that we'd better not blindside you if we wished for a solid partnership," stated the Matriarch, surprising Severus.

He was unsure of the Family hierarchy, but he had the feeling the Matriarch usually let Master Sæther be her spokesperson, giving her words even more weight when she spoke.

"Of course, the game is funnier when you sometimes spring surprises on your partner," added Vilde with a smirk.

Meaning Severus could expect many headaches when dealing with the Vampires because they operated differently than he did. Their show of faith was an indication of the confidence they had in their Alliance with him as well as a political move to warn him they could be precious supporters to his cause.

He did not quite know how to respond to Vilde's warning but was saved from an awkward silence by Hoardrock's return. Immediately, he Sensed Master Sæther's spell fade out.

"Forgive me for taking so long, I was intercepted on another matter along the way," said the Goblin.

Severus refrained a frown. If he was not mistaken, that other matter had annoyed Hoardrock.

"It was no bother Master Hoardrock, as it gave us the opportunity to get to know our new Ally," answered the Matriarch with a smile as she got up, followed suit by the other Vampires. "We won't take up more of your valuable time, for we know how precious time is for both of you."

"Thank you, Matriarch Ressurs," said Hoardroack as he bowed. "May our paths cross under the mountain as many times as stars will light the night sky."

"May we hunt together til the day of the bloody moon," answered the three Vampires in chorus.

The Matriarch turned to Severus and bowed again.
"Thank you for your welcome, Lord Caspian. May we hunt together in the future."

"Thank you, Matriarch Ressurs," said Severus with an answering bow. "May Magic guide your path under the mountain until we meet again."

He caught the slight widening of her eye at his modified version of one of the common goblin blessings and smiled to himself. He was determined to be Lord Caspian, balanced between Goblins and Wizards.

The Vampires left the room, Vilde gratifying him with a furtive but wide fanged smile. Hoardrock sighed as he sat back behind his desk.

"Is something wrong?" asked Severus.

The Goblin remained silent, letting his eyes roam over Severus before finally answering.
"Clan Hankō would like you to meet with one of their esteemed business partners. They wish to act as a mediator between the both of you."

Clan Hankō. Master Hoardrock could only be speaking of Lord Potter.

Severus' first impulse was to refuse the confrontation. He had no doubt the Lord hoped to use Severus to get the Goblins to change his sons' punishment. Yet, Clan Hankō also was Wise Kasai's clan. The Goblin had been supportive of Severus during his time in Kyirong. Severus did not wish to insult his clan.

"Lord Potter wishes to meet with me," stated Severus.

Hoardrock nodded, his ears flickering.
"You have no obligation to accept this meeting."

"I believe I can at least hear Lord Potter out," answered Severus calmly.

The Goblin looked at him thoughtfully then smiled his toothful smile.
"Of course. No one prevents you from walking out of this meeting whenever you wish to."

He paused.
"Lord Malfoy is grooming you well."

"I think so too, though we have our disagreements," answered Severus "He is keen for me to adopt other members into my House."

"Are you opposed to increasing your House size?" asked Master Hoardrock, perplexed. "To possess more than one member would establish your authority as a true Head of House and reinforce your House' Magic."

"I refuse to adopt members only because it's what is expected of me," stated Severus firmly. "If I ever agree to adopt someone else in House Caspian, it will be because I feel that they belong."

The Goblin shook his head slightly, but Severus did not know if it was in bewilderment or fondness.

"Usta Antei from Clan Hankō is waiting for you outside," said the Goblin.

"Thank you, Hoardrock," answered Severus. "I doubt the meeting will last long, may we still review House Caspian sources of income afterwards?"

"My afternoon is yours, Daoack. Come back to my office when you are finished," said the Goblin with a small pointed smile.

Severus smiled back then went outside the office. A Goblin was waiting for him. He looked barely over thirty-six.

"Usta Antei from Clan Hankō?" asked Severus.

"Yíngjiē, Lord Caspian," answered the Goblin with a bow.

"Yíngjiē, Usta Antei," replied Severus, bowing back lightly. "I will meet with Lord Potter now."

"Thank you, Lord Caspian," answered the young Usta, bowing deeply. "Please follow me."

They walked in silence through Gringotts corridors, greeting several familiar faces along the way. Usta Antei took Severus to one of the smaller negotiation rooms.
A round table, similar to the one in Hoardrock's office, stood at the centre of the room. Lord Potter was seated on one of the four chairs surrounding the table. The Lord was the spitting image of his biological son, with the exception of his hair that was grey and tamed into a traditional braid. Severus also thought that Potter's arrogance had been replaced by a quiet assurance on his father's face, which suited the Potter Head of House.

"Yíngjiē, Lord Caspian," greeted Lord Potter, standing up to bow lightly. "Thank you for agreeing to meet with me without prior warning."

"Yíngjiē, Lord Potter," said Severus with an answering bow. "You are welcome, I know Clan Hankō would not have requested a meeting so quickly for a frivolous matter."

Usta Antei bowed to Severus.
"In agreement with my clan's privileged relationship with House Potter, we have agreed to act as intermediaries between Lord Fleamont Potter and yourself. I will remain present during the meeting to ensure it remains in accordance with Gringotts' principles, but I am to be neutral in your discussion."

"Thank you for the clarification, Usta Antei," answered Severus.

"Please have a seat," said Lord Potter as he sat back on his chair.

Severus settled across the older Lord while the Goblin sat between them.

"Lord Caspian," began the Potter Head of House, looking at Severus straight in the eyes, "I have asked to meet with you so urgently because only a few days ago, I was notified by the Goblin Nation of a serious matter pertaining to my House involving my sons and yourself, which had led them to decide that the Trusted Business Partnership status of House Potter would not be renewed if either James or Sirius became Head of House Potter."

He paused, as if still unable to believe the Goblins' statement.
"I was astonished to learn that during their short stay in Kyirong to visit their friends, my sons had broken the Sanctuary's rules and attacked you without provocation. As you may imagine, I immediately asked my sons their side of the events."

He sighed.
"I know that relations between yourself and my sons have always been tense. I heard about you from my sons many times during your Hogwarts years. I believe Albus described you as school rivals. I hoped the situation in Kyirong was only a… scuffle, a matter of boys being boys like you were in school, which had led to a misunderstanding with the Goblins. My sons quickly disabused me of the notion. I was… stunned to realise they were not aware of the gravity of their actions. Sanctuaries are to be respected no matter who you come across."

He smiled wryly.
"I assure you they now completely understand their mistake."

Severus wondered if they truly did, or if they had only learnt they really should not get caught.

"I believe you," he simply answered the Lord.

He was pleasantly surprised by Lord Potter's attitude for now, who seemed reasonable if completely disconnected from the reality of his sons' actions at Hogwarts. Though if Dumbledore was the source of his information, it was not surprising.

"My sons owe you an apology for breaking the Sanctuary's law. They must make amends to you. However, while my sons' actions are reprehensible, I was surprised that the Goblins had taken such a punitive decision against my House," admitted Lord Potter. "I understood better when I inquired within Clan Hankō and learnt that Clan Röykkiö consider you like their own. It's clear to me that if I hope to change the Goblins' decision, I need your support. So I ask you Lord Caspian, what would you require from House Potter to support our appeal to the Goblin Nation's decision?"

Nothing, it serves the arrogant bullies right, was Severus first thought. Then he closed his eyes and forced himself to think like the Head of House Caspian. He took his time, considering several actions and arguments before giving his answer to Lord Potter.

"I'm afraid that today, nothing could convince me to support you in your endeavour," stated Severus firmly. "I understand your predicament and your request, however, I have seen nothing to suggest that your sons have changed their behaviour. I received no formal apology from their part. Moreover, we are both aware that we are on opposite political sides, and any favour I could require from House Potter in exchange for my support would be too dangerous for both our Houses."

Lord Potter nodded sombrely.
"I thought that might be your answer. Would you be willing to reconsider your position at a later time, let's say six months after the election for example? The situation might be more propitious for such negotiation. I know that you were Abraxas' protégé, and I assure you that while we had our share of disagreement, we were often able to reach compromise in our dealings."

Severus raised an eyebrow at him.
"Do you still respect him despite the way he died?"

"I assure you I never believed the rubbish that Abraxas had wanted to kill all those Muggles to enslave their muggleborn children or other such stupidities. We may not have shared the same vision of the future of our world, but he was an honourable man," stated Lord Potter with a hard glint in his eyes.

"According to your sons, Slytherins are untrustworthy and Dark," replied Severus. "You may understand why I am surprised by your declaration."

Lord Potter shook his head.
"Young boys love to consider that their House is the only worthy one. The truth is that Slytherin ways feel alien to us Gryffindors but it doesn't make you less Wizards than us. Though some Slytherins have been known to walk a fine line with the Dark, and I've seen several of them commit atrocities in its name."

Was the Lord polishing his words to gain Severus to his side, or was he truly less biased than his sons? Severus would hold his judgement for now.

"You may contact me again after the elections, at least six months afterwards if not more, depending on the situation," agreed Severus. "However, I have doubts on whether we will be able to find an agreement on this matter."

"Losing our exceptional relation with Clan Hankō would be detrimental to my House, but to the clan as well," said Lord Potter. "It would also impact many of our vassals and business partners, including House Malfoy."

Severus was not surprised to learn that House Potter and House Malfoy possessed business contracts. But for Lord Potter to allude to it was a low blow.

"You realise your sons are not your only possible heir," replied Severus. "Lily Potter could become Head of House. Or her son."

"I'm surprised you would propose Lily as a Head of House, knowing how your friendship ended," commented Lord Potter, not answering on the possibility of choosing another heir than one of his sons.

"I am the Head of House Caspian," replied Severus. "No matter the state of my private relationship with Lily, I know she possesses many qualities that could make her a great Head of House with the right grooming. I am certain she would not be worse than either of your sons."

Lord Potter let out a brief laugh.
"You should be careful in your words, Lord Caspian. I personally find refreshing people who do not mince words, but you came close to insulting my family. Others might take offence."

Severus smiled tightly.
"I have no use for those easily offended by the truth."

"Yet you suggested Lily Potter as Head of House."

Severus did not react to the reference of Lily breaking their friendship over the word "Mudblood". It had only been a pretext after all. And they were almost friends today, though the older man did not know it. He wondered if he would have felt more insulted if Potter had been the one in front of him instead of his father.

Severus got up and bowed to Lord Potter.
"I believe it is time to end this meeting while we are still on civil terms."

"My apology Lord Caspian," answered Lord Potter, standing up as well. "Those last words were uncalled for. I appreciate you meeting with me on such a short notice. I will contact you again on this matter when the situation has calmed down."

"Apologies accepted, Lord Potter. Let me tell you that this is the first heartfelt apology I ever received from a Potter. I wish you a good afternoon."

"Please wait, Lord Caspian," asked the older man unexpectedly. "I have another matter I would like to discuss with you and which is in no way related to my sons."

He looked earnest. Severus' curiosity was piqued.

"I'm listening," answered Severus, sitting back down.

The older man followed suit, offering him a small grateful smile.

"I attended the Sponsorship Forum held this weekend in Hogsmeade," began Lord Potter. "It was… enlightening. It offered me points of views I had never considered as well as made me realise some of us Purebloods were idealising Muggleborns' families. It made me realise how wrong Minister Birkins had been to refuse to support this sponsorship effort and how wrong I had been to agree with the Minister. However, I also think that the sponsorship as it is is biased, with a high risk of increasing the current gap between Minister Birkins' followers and Lord Voldemort's."

Severus had not expected him to broach this subject. He was surprised by the praise aimed at the sponsorship, though it reinforced his first impression that Lord Potter could be considered a fair man. He was not surprised by the criticism of the sponsorship, as it was one argument that was often raised these past months during the conferences of both Minister Birkins and Lord Voldemort.

"I am glad that you realise how precious the sponsorship is for Muggleborns. As you must know, I would not be who I am today without my Mentor. I don't think I will surprise you when I say that I don't agree with your assessment about the risk of increasing the gap that already exists. On the contrary, I believe it will reduce it. You know that all Muggleborns are welcome to get a sponsor. They will have the chance to learn our traditions, laws and history in a more concrete way than during Professor Binns' courses. The sponsors are specifically chosen because they have a better understanding of Muggles than most Purebloods, and because they are the most apt to help the sponsorees."

"What happens when you have so many sponsorees to care for that you lack sponsors and have to accept some who don't quite fit those criteria? Do you really think you could prevent the Blacks from becoming sponsors if they so wished?" asked Lord Potter, clearly unconvinced.

"The Blacks lost their last shred of credibility on the matter of caring for children when they disinherited their still minor heir and excluded him from their House Oath, almost pushing him into madness as a consequence."

"Sirius would have died if I had not adopted him. Still, I think you vastly underestimate the Blacks' political power," stated Lord Potter.

Severus crossed his arms.
"If you attended the forum, you know that we are currently recruiting non-Slytherins sponsors."

"Indeed. And have you read the contract those sponsors would be required to sign?" asked the older man, curious.

"I haven't," admitted Severus.

"To sum it up, they must abide by all Slytherin's rules and opinions. Meaning the Muggleborns would only discover our world through the lens of Slytherins, excluding the views of three quarters of our world."

"Considering Slytherins are the only ones who truly seem to care about educating the Muggleborns properly about our world instead of letting them believe in the muggle world's vision of Wizards, I fail to see the problem," answered Seveus dryly.

The Lord raised an unimpressed eyebrow at him.
"Please Lord Caspian. I am certain you understand the validity of my point. The sponsorship needs to evolve to include a complete vision of our world. The sponsorees must take turns with various sponsors from different Houses and opinions."

Severus shook his head.
"I don't think you truly understand the bond between a Mentoree and his Mentor. The Mentor becomes part of his Mentoree family. It's necessary if he is to help his Mentoree in every way, including with the relationship with his muggle parents and family. Mentorees won't ask for help if they don't trust their Mentor."

Lord Potter looked at him with piercing eyes that seemed to read his soul.
"I understand that some Muggleborns' situations are delicate. However, I think you underestimate our capacity to see behind appearances and to take the necessary steps to protect children."

Severus felt his eyes harden.
"The Mentorship would not be necessary if that were true."

Lord Potter remained silent for a long time before offering Severus an amused smile.
"Well, it seems we're doomed not to find a common ground today, Lord Caspian."

Severus smiled back, once more agreeably surprised by the Lord who was not trying to convince him more forcefully.
"Yet, we managed to listen and understand each other. I daresay this was time well spent."

The older man laughed lightly.
"Well said Lord Caspian. I can truly see Abraxas in you."

"So you understand why I would not have wanted to share him with other Mentorees," answered Severus, his tone more serious that he would have liked.

"I do," answered Lord Potter. "Yet, what worked for you may not be what others need. At least, consider this."

"Only if you consider my point," countered Severus.

"I believe I will," answered the older man with a smile as he stood up. "Thank you once more for taking the time to meet with me."

"It was my pleasure, Lord Potter," answered Severus with surprising honesty, standing up as well. "I wish you a prosperous end of day."

"Thank you Lord Caspian. I wish you a fruitful afternoon as well."

Severus bowed and left the room with a light step. He had no doubt the "Potter twins" would remain a point of contention between them, but he could imagine himself doing business with the older Potter. The man had not even tried to patronise him by omitting his title or calling him "my boy" like Dumbledore would have. He wondered if Dumbledore's influence was the reason for the difference of character between Lord Potter and his son. Experience and years could not be the only factor.

"I take it the meeting went well?" asked Hoardrock as Severus closed the door to the Goblin's office.

"Better than I expected," answered Severus as he went to sit in front of Hoardrock. "Lord Potter is surprisingly reasonable compared to his sons."

Hoardrock smirked.
"Youngsters are often foolish and brash, thinking they know better than their elders. Most learn with time."

"I suppose time will tell in this case," answered Severus. "There's something I want to discuss with you, Master Hoardrock. It's been on my mind for a time and after the negotiation with Family Ressurs, I would like your advice."

"This is what Gringotts pays me for," smirked Hoardrock.

"Mother and I used to sell potions on demand from our catalogue under the name Eileen's Apothecary," began Severus. "We mostly sold basic potions, but also a few unlicensed grade III ones and we had a solid base of customers. Several of the basic potions we sold did not follow their licensed recipes as we could not afford the most expensive ingredients, and because we also made improvements to some of the recipes. I realise today that some of these recipes changes were sufficient to need a new licence for the potions," admitted Severus.

He had not known enough at the time to realise that even for basic potions, depending on the modifications the brewer made to the licensed recipe, it could be necessary to ask Saint Mungo for a new license. Indeed, if one customer was harmed by a potion brewed with a recipe considered as unlicensed but without warning to the customer, the health care would have to be paid by the brewer. They would also risk a fine and a jail sentence.

"Do you wish to open your own apothecary?" asked Hoardrock.

"Yes and no," answered Severus. "I'm not interested in brewing the same potion over and again as I did when I was younger, especially now that I have sufficient income streams not to worry about making ends meet for some time. However, I don't want all the improvements I have discovered to go to waste. There are also several potions I invented which could be useful to others while contributing to increasing House Caspian's income. The question is, should I license and patent those improvements and new potions then let other brew and sell the potions, or should I keep the recipes unknown and unlicensed, and find someone to brew and sell them for me for a cheaper price?"

Hoardrock settled back in his chair deep in thought.
"I see. I'm usually in favour of patents, especially if you do not wish to apply for a license at Saint Mungo. You'll be able to warn your customers for potential allergies in listing the ingredients on the potions. However, not applying for a license means most brewers won't choose your recipe if a licensed one exists, so you would need your own apothecary. It would also be useful each time you begin to distribute a new complex potion."

The Goblin smiled sharply.
"Of course, the optimum solution would be to have an apothecary owned and manned by House Caspian, in the event there is one recipe you wish to keep secret. Like those future Vampire adapted potions, for example."

Severus gave him a pointed look.
"I told you that I won't adopt anyone just to please you or anyone else."

"So make an announcement you wish to recruit brewers and adopt them in your House, and test them. I assure you the candidates will be more numerous than you think," replied Hoardrock.

"You don't just test someone before adopting them. You need time to get to know them," retorted Severus.

"Think about it," simply answered the Goblin with a toothful smile.

Other than Hoardrock's less than subtle attempt at pushing Severus in accepting new members into Caspian House, his reasoning was sound. Severus could even establish the apothecary at Spinner's End, close to the manor, and use the mailing box system to deliver the potions vials to Diagon Alley. It would allow him to use the ingredients from his garden and greenhouse, though he might have to increase their size if they were not for his use only.

As for adopting other brewers, while it would be practical, Severus did not think it was reason enough to accept unknown individuals into his private circle. He would need to take more time to finalise his idea, but he would have his apothecary.

"Thank you, Master Hoardrock, for your advice. I will let it simmer for some time then I'll get back to you," said Severus.

"You're welcome, Lord Caspian. Now, I believe you will be quite satisfied with the development of your current sources of income…"

When Severus left Gringotts one hour later, he was assured to be comfortable financially for the next five years even in the worst possible scenario but it looked like he was going to be very, very busy. His "to-do list" as well as the mind-grimoire where he kept track of his projects might not be enough. He would have to add a specific room in his mind-lab to organise all his projects and long-term plans. Helest give him strength.
