Hello, all! It's been a few more days than I would have liked, but it is finals week, so... Anyway here's the latest chapter, I'll be updating again in the next 2 days, thanks for your patience.
BPOV
Emmett and Jasper were right behind him. I already had James' head halfway torn off, but with all of his rage, Edward tore the rest off in one fell swoop. While I didn't like the thought of killing another being I knew James, if left alive, would never leave us alone.
Emmett and Jasper started a fire and finished tearing him apart.
Edward was by my side in an instant, his eyes were searching all over me taking inventory of whatever injuries I had sustained. I knew that beneath my pants you could probably see the cracks that James had left there and I didn't have to examine my shoulder to know that those breaks would look pretty awful too. I hoped the ones on my leg would fade before Edward saw them. There was nothing I could do about concealing my shoulder, for one Edward had seen him trying to take it off, and I was wearing a tee shirt that kept the breaks visible.
It didn't even hurt that bad, the burn emanating from my hand still remained the most prominent pain. I tried to hold back the pained groan coming from my throat, but Edward still heard it.
"Bella? What's wrong? What hurts?" He was looking at the arm that James had so intently been trying to tear off. He lifted the sleeve to examine the damage. I grabbed his hand and pulled the sleeve down. He didn't need to see it, it wasn't even bothering that much. The breakage was nothing compared to the stinging and burning of my hand. "I know it hurts, it'll heal soon, just relax."
"No, it's not my arm," I said through gritted teeth, I was fighting the urge to scream out in pain. My eyes flickered to my hand and Edward followed my eye-line. It wasn't healing as fast as the rest of me.
"He bit you," the fury was back in Edward's beautiful expression. His golden eyes going onyx again. "Jasper."
"The burn is already fading, don't worry," I tried to be as convincing as possible, and it was fading but it was still incredibly painful.
"Alice? Where's Alice?" I had to tell her what I had just learned, Edward had told me she always wondered about her past and now that I knew I needed to tell her.
"Everyone is fine, Bella. Please calm down," Edward tried consoling me.
"No, Edward, he knew. He knew her when she was still a human," I groaned through pain.
"Jasper," Edward called again, this time with more force. Jasper finally tore away from the remnants of James and was next to Edward in an instant. He followed Edward's intense gaze to my hand. I saw the slightest flinch once he saw the bite.
"Let me see, Bella." Jasper gently took my hand, the cracking was already fading but I could still see the deep-set bite marks.
"He got you good," Jasper admitted. "But the pain should fade soon, Bella."
I could feel the waves of relief Jasper was sending to me.
"Thank you, Jasper."
He nodded intently, but I could see him and Edward share a look that I couldn't quite decipher, but it brought the fury back in Edward's eyes.
"He told me why Alice can't remember, Jasper," I breathed out.
"It's alright, Bella."
"No, look, she should see it," I insisted, nudging my head toward the video camera in the center of the field. Jasper just nodded.
"He recorded the whole thing," Edward whispered to himself. I knew Edward, he would internalize all of his anger and punish himself for what had happened today. I would not allow him to tear himself apart over something he had no fault in.
EPOV
Despite Bella's insistence that I not see what she had been through, if she had to live through it then so would I.
We all returned back to the home in Forks. Alice had reluctantly given me the camera after seeing the video herself. She wasn't sure what she was more upset about, how Bella would have taken her place and how valiantly Bella defended our family, or the way in which she learned about her own past. I made some thinly-veiled excuse to go watch the footage myself. I sat in Esme's garden, where just months ago we had married, and pressed play.
I watched Bella run into the field and make direct eye contact with camera, I could see the realization wash over her. He knew where she was taking him, where he had first crossed paths with our family. I watched as he goaded her, he knew she would protect Renesmee and I no matter the cost, and he used protectiveness against her. He explained why we targeted us, and after an explanation of Alice's history and how he had selected my Bella as his next victim, he continued to torment her.
The plan was for her to draw him out, to give chase for a while, until we could get to her, but he knew what we were trying to do, that I most likely wasn't far behind. James was forcing her to make a choice, fight despite knowing that it would be nearly impossible for her to win, or to go with him as a some kind of vile pet.
I had told Bella that I was going to give her ten minutes and then follow her, but I left right away, perhaps if I had stayed Alice could have told me Bella was in trouble and I would have gone straight to her. Victoria had been running a perimeter around Forks. I tried to catch Victoria, but even with my speed, she slipped out of our reach, just another way I had failed Bella. Once I knew capturing Victoria was no longer achievable, I went to help Bella. I could see when the exact moment when Bella could no longer stall, the moment he threatened to go after Renesmee. He leered closer and closer to her until he forced her hand. She did exactly what he wanted, she used all her strength to shove him away.
They blurred on the screen until he pinned her against a tree. He had his body pressing against her shoving himself closer to her, she immediately went on the defensive. She was giving into her newborn instincts.
Bella used her strength to fend off James, but I could see the understanding reach her face when she knew that she wouldn't win that way. Despite the damage she had done to James, he was relentless. Then she began to fight strategically. It didn't matter anymore, I could see the anger and desperation in James' face, gone was the strategic tracker who had watched Bella over the last few months, he had now been replaced by someone just, if not more, dangerous. This animal was unhinged, unstable, completely unhindered by the humanity that our family desperately clung to.
In a last ditch effort to win, he bit her. He knew the pain of the bite would detract from her defenses, then he rag-dolled her across the field. I saw first-hand the indentation that was left from his force.
I had heard in Jasper's thoughts that it wasn't a quick, attack-bite like the ones he had sustained in the South, he bit her as deeply as he could to inflict as much pain as possible. It reignited my fury.
She didn't scream, but I could see her writhing in pain in the background. James took that moment to speak directly to the camera, to provoke me, to let me know the agony he would put her through, in his words how much 'fun' he would have using her gift to its full advantage. I heard the slight cracking of the video camera and had to unclench my fist before I broke it. I needed to watch this in its entirety. I needed to know.
He stood over her, and she somehow pushed through the pain to fight back, he wanted her to tell me to avenge her, but despite the immense pain she must have felt, she didn't. First he stomped at her leg, I heard the faint crack as his boot made contact with her leg. He had gotten too confident, too angry to strategize rationally. He threatened to take her arm off, and he was now trying to make good on that threat. He bent over her, foot on her shoulder trying to do so. He wanted both of us to hurt. What he didn't count on was how smart Bella is, she saw him losing it, and took the opportunity. I could hear the distinctive sound of our marble skin being torn apart, Bella would have succeeded without my intervention, but he would have torn off her arm as she did. I saw myself blur across the field and shove James off of her.
It took a few minutes before someone turned off the camera.
Everyone in our family, with the exception of Rose, had felt that we had failed Bella. Carlisle and Esme knew, rationally, that there was no one to blame except the lecherous James for what had transpired, but they felt awful incredibly guilty that Bella had gotten hurt. She had just left a life full of pain and was once again being put through more pain. Bella had known too much pain for this eternity.
Both Emmett and Jasper felt they had failed to protect their little sister, the wolves had seen Victoria running through the woods, and went on the defensive as soon as Emmett and Jasper approached the treaty line. Emmett didn't respond well to the aggression and went on the defensive himself. In trying to calm everyone down, he mentioned Bella's name. It was a good thing that Jacob had been the wolf they found at the treaty line. It took a few minutes but once everyone calmed down, and the wolves allowed Jasper to explain. They made it to Bella just after I did, they both were thinking about how they had taken too long, and what would have been different if they had finished sooner.
Alice thought she should have seen what would have happened and therefore prevented it.
And I knew this plan that we had formulated that used Bella as bait was a bad idea. Bella assured me that it would be okay, and while there were unforeseen complications, Bella was still new to this life, I should have known better.
I finally allowed myself to crush the camera into tiny shards of plastic, no one would have to suffer that gut wrenching footage any longer.
I walked back inside and returned to my spot on the couch next to Bella. I grabbed her uninjured hand and held onto her like our lives depended on it.
Rose and Alice had brought Renesmee here earlier, once we had taken care of James. This was the first time she would be seeing this house.
She truly was as perceptive as her mother, Renesmee knew something was wrong when they walked in. She ran over to Bella first, and despite her injuries, Bella scooped Renesmee into her arms and showered her with affection.
Once Rose and Renesmee were in another room, Bella let go of my hand and stood up.
"Alright enough of this," she demanded, everyone looked up at her with the same confused expression.
