Chapter 56 - Explanations and more Questions
The Quauhtin and Secret Service members were all over the hallway at the hospital. The Doctor spoke to the doctors and everyone agreed it was safer to move Pete to a hospital with higher security in place. Meanwhile, the Doctor sat with Jackie over in the corner of the waiting room, alone.
"I'm so sorry no one has told you about this. It really just wasn't something anyone thought about." the Doctor explained to her.
"That our bodyguards are all aliens? How is that even possible?" Jackie asked.
"They are the best bodyguards in the universe, Jackie. They protect Royal families all over the galaxy. We are tremendously lucky to have them!" he explained.
"They just hid in the shadows and watch us? That's creepy."
"No. They can...ummm... phase in between reality. They aren't really there, but they aren't really not. It's complicated and I'm sure I'm not doing a very good job explaining this-"
"No, that makes sense. That makes me feel better. Pete has always said that the best bodyguards are the ones that you never see." Jackie told him.
The Doctor smiled. "Right. It's true. They have been working to keep the entire Tyler family safe for a long time. Even before I got here. Mickey and Jake set it up a long time ago. It was probably the best thing they could have done. We are moving Pete to the hospital that is closer to Washington. It's the one they put the President in so the security will be much better. I'll go with him to make everything goes smoothly."
"Thank you." Jackie said.
The Doctor knew she had to be exhausted. She was being way too calm about this entire thing.
"Jackie. I spoke to Pete right before this happened. He wanted me to try to get you to go back to our flat and go to sleep. He asked me to remind you that you have Tony, who needs you. He said there wasn't anything you could do. He knows you want to be here when he wakes up, but he wants you to take care of yourself."
"I can't leave!" Jackie insisted.
"Jackie, there's really nothing you can do. Really. Pete knows you love him. He knows you are worried about him. But, he also knows you need to take care of yourself, too."
Jackie shrugged her shoulders, "It makes no difference. I can't sleep if I go back."
"You're not sleeping, either? Howie isn't sleeping." the Doctor realized.
"No surprise with all of this going on." Jackie insisted.
"Well, that's true. But, Jackie. You are safe. You know I wouldn't leave Rose, Genie and Tony with anyone I didn't trust. You can go back to our flat and stay as long as you like. You don't have to go home. Just go and sleep. I'll send you back with Lewis. He just showed up and he wouldn't mind."
Jackie nodded her head. "Alright. Stay with Pete. Wake me up if anything changes."
The Doctor smiled, "You know I will."
He walked away and asked Lewis to take Jackie back to the flat. Jake met up with him as he walked down the hall. "Ugh. More good news. Your favorite person is here."
Jack stood next to the Doctor. "Who's that?"
The Doctor looked and groaned as he saw the weapons developer walk down the hall towards him. He was wearing a very expensive suit with sunglasses. He walked up and shook the Doctor's hand.
"Doctor Smith! Nice to see you! Jake." he greeted them.
He noticed Jack and ripped his sunglasses off his face. "This is someone new."
Jack smiled, "Captain Jack Harkness."
The weapons developer held out his hand and shook it quickly, "Call me Tony. Yeah, this is a mess here! I came by to show you something, Doctor Smith! I know you like stuff like this and wanted to see if I could help you out."
The Doctor put his hands in his pockets and rocked on his feet. "Alright. What do you have?"
Tony put a small metal box on the floor of the hallway. It was about the size of a phone. He motioned for them to follow him and step away from it. They followed as the device came to life and scanned the hallway. A green light blinked for a few seconds, then a line drawing of the Doctor and Jack stepping off of the lift appeared.
"See. That even looks like you." Tony said as he pointed at the drawing of the Doctor.
They turned around and saw a line drawing of two men walking down the hall. One had pulled a knife out.
They watched as the little box played a perfect reenactment of the events that had happened. When the men lay still on the floor, the projection stopped.
The Doctor couldn't help himself, he was impressed. "That's brilliant!"
Tony smiled, "I knew you would love it! Let's go over to the hotel and figure out what the hell happened over there. You game?"
The Doctor shook his hand. "Yeah. But, let's take my motor. You'll love this!"
