"Thank you, everyone. I'll see you on the other side."
Those were the last words Asuna muttered before she logged out, freeing herself from the virtual world once and for all.
Or so she thought.
Instead, she was sent back to the white void once again. In front of her was a man, his back to her.
"...Kayaba Akihiko." Asuna said.
"Hello once again, Asuna-kun." Akihiko replied. "I know you're eager to return to the real world, so I'll make this quick." He turned around. "Once again, you have proved your worth and defied my expectations. Congratulations. Now, you are free to return and live in the real world."
"...I believe thanks are in order." Asuna bowed. "Thank you, for lending me your strength to fight Oberon."
He peered at her. "While your gratitude is accepted, there is still a price to pay."
She narrowed her eyes. "...indeed."
He nodded his head. Asuna noticed a glowing object appear above her. It slowly descended, and she reached out to grab it.
It was egg-shaped, with a gold, translucent shell. It was bigger than she expected - about the size of a small melon - and she could see lights of various colors swirling inside of it.
"What's this?"
"It's the origin of worlds...I call it ''The Seed''. Akihiko replied. "Bring this item to Kirito-kun's attention, as well as the two AI units. Once it buds, they will understand its nature. After that, your debt is settled. You can even delete it and move on with your life." He pursed his lips. "However, if you hold any feelings other than hatred for that floating castle...I suggest you let it thrive."
"...if this is an elaborate plan to get back at us for defeating you, then I will personally erase every single trace of your existence." She warned.
"Do you think so low of me, the man who once rallied Aincrad's best and brightest?"
"If I recall correctly, all you were interested about are boss fight strategies and player scouting. Fund allocation, inter-guild relations, and so many meetings...the rest of us were in charge of everything else."
He smiled at that. "I stand corrected. Regardless, I know that you will hold up your end of the bargain - at least for a while." He pursed his lips and turned around. "Farewell, Asuna-kun."
Asuna was engulfed by light, and she closed her eyes. When she opened them, she found herself lying on a gel-like bed.
"...farewell, commander."

Real World
"Cheers!" A group of people said in unison, raising their glasses and drinking.
Dicey Cafe was filled, its occupants celebrating Aincrad being completed. It had been months ago, but with all that happened since then, they found it fitting to delay it until now.
On the corner of the cafe, Mizushima Rin bowed towards Ayano Tetsuhiko. "Thank you for your assistance with this matter, Ayano-san."
Tetsuhiko smiled. "No need to be too formal. It's my job. I hear you've been quite busy yourself." He turned to the person standing beside Rin. "Hey, Rino."
Mizushima Rinnosuke pursed his lips. "Tetsu…"
Wordlessly, Rin nodded to the two before he went away.
"Wah~, how cute~" Yuuki Asuna squealed. "Can I have a copy?"
On the phone was a picture of a toddler, red-faced and crying as a restaurant mascot cradled him. On the side was a man trying not to laugh.
"Of course, of course~" Mizushima Sakura replied. She was showing one of Rin's baby pictures to Ayano Keiko and Yuuki Asuna, who couldn't stop grinning. Beside them were Mizushima Linda and Ayano Mayu, exchanging stories about their children.
"Wow, seriously? Out of all the pictures that you can show her, you showed that one?" She heard a voice from beside her. It was Rin, who was giving her a look.
"But it's cute, right~?" She said to the two, who nodded with a smile on their faces before they looked back at her phone.
"Urgh…" He groaned.
"Wow, breaking' the laaaaaw~, breakin' the woorld, KOWASEEEEE!" Ryoutarou was manning the karaoke machine, all but screaming his heart out. The rest of Fuurinkazan interjected heartily.
Sakura glanced at him for a moment before she looked away, a small blush on her face. She then felt a chill on her back as she noticed Rin looking at her with a smile. "Wh..what?"
"Oh, nothing. Just planning a little payback."
Sakura glared at him with a 'don't you dare' expression.
He shrugged before looking at Asuna. "Sup, old-timer? Did you forget your crutch today?" He teased. "Last I heard, you were forcing yourself to look strong at school."
Asuna scoffed. "Heh. I've officially finished rehab. Got no need for crutches anymore." She said proudly.
His teasing smile softened into a genuine one. "Well, that was quick. I'm glad you recovered quickly.
She smiled back. "Thank you."
He chuckled. "Alright. I'll talk to you two later."
He went away from them, going towards the bar counter. On the side were Nairi, Sefton, Liz, Keita, and the rest of the founding members of the Moonlit Black Cats, laughing as they exchanged stories. Rin nodded over to them before he went on his way.
"Wahahahaha!" Sitting on a barstool was Wilhelm - real name Oliver. He had a drink in his hand as he laughed heartily while talking to Andrew, who was manning the bar, as well as Thinker, who was sitting next to him.
"Hello, Oliver-san." Rin greeted. "How're you doing today?"
"Ah, Rin, my boy! It's been a long time!" Oliver greeted back. "I've been busy with handling Alfheim Online. After everything went public, it's no surprise that the company developing them went under. I was able to secure the rights to the IP, and I assembled a team to overlook its development."
"Thanks for your work. Wait, does that mean you're the new 'god of all virtual humans'?"
"Nope. The team's gonna do all the work. I made a point to avoid a single person having considerable influence and control over everyone else because we all know how that turned out." He started to scowl, but shook his head and smiled. "Well, that's enough rambling for me. Come on, Rin. Join me so we can celebrate Thinker's marriage."
Beside him, Thinker forced a smile. "Wilhelm-san. You're being too rowdy." He turned to Rin. "Good afternoon, Riwet-kun."
"Good afternoon. Congratulations on the wedding." He replied. "I've heard about it but didn't know if it was true or not. I hope the best for the two of you."
Thinker's eyes wandered to the side, where he spotted his fiance, Yulier, talking to Sasha. His smile softened. "...yeah, I hope so, too." He scratched the back of his head and turned to the drink he was holding. "To be honest, I'm still busy adjusting to living back here in the real world. Currently, I have no time to write walkthroughs, and I'm not even sure that people need them."
"I'm sure you'll find your groove and your niche soon enough. I may not have too much experience with MMO today, but there are lots of players like me who want guides written by reliable sources." Rin smiled. "Well, for now, enjoy your married life. I've heard that it's very nice."
With that, Rin excused himself and went over to the other end
Finally, he scooted over to the other end, where Kazuto, Keiko, Suguha, and Andrew were hanging out. He stood beside Kazuto. "Hey." He greeted.
"Hey." Kazuto greeted back before he sighed and looked around the cafe. "There's a lot of people in here."
"I know, right? Wanna ditch this party? I think there's an arcade nearby."
"Oh, don't say that! You know everyone here!" Silica spoke up. "And besides, since Kiri-Kazuto-san is the guest of honor, they'll know the second you leave./"
"But isn't that the point? The Black Swordsman, Kirito, disappears amid the festivities, in search of more adventure." He narrated in a raspy voice.
"Ooohh…" Keiko and Suguha cooed in unison.
"So damn cringe." Kirito groaned before he took a sip of his carbonated drink.
"But Onii-chan, isn't that-" Suguha started.
"I don't know what you're talking about, Sugu." He cut her off.
"...but I haven't said anything yet."
"..."
"..."
"Ahem." Rin cleared his throat. "As much as I'm interested in that story, let's lay off the guest of honor for a bit. So..are you guys ready for tonight?"
"You bet." Kirito smiled. "Aincrad's returned and the SAO survivors are given the choice to transfer their data."
"And not only that, but VRMMOs are experiencing a big comeback." Andrew added. "The Seed has spread all over the internet and everyone is making VRMMOs, adding their twist to the formula. It's not every day that you can get an extremely robust, high-quality, highly-modifiable, simple to use, low-maintenance, and free game engine complete with pre-packaged assets. It'll take a long time for the wave to slow down, and that's not counting the multitude of uses it can have outside of VRMMOs."
"Eh. People are gonna get tired of it sooner or later and move on to other things, especially since the market's gonna get oversaturated." Rin commented. "Though, if I have the time, I'm interested in creating a second account and check some of the good ones that aren't medieval fantasy. I think I'm due for a change in setting."
"Any particular setting in mind?" Kirito asked.
"Sci-fi. With lasers and stuff. Anything that isn't older than modern."
Suguha silently watched the two talk, and then stood from her seat to get something to eat. Taking note of her silence, Keiko followed her. "Suguha-san, is there something wrong?" She quietly asked.
"It's nothing, Keiko-chan...it's just…" She pursed her lips.
Keiko flashed back to the conversation he had with Kazuto back in SAO. She let out a smile. "Will you join us in clearing the new Aincrad?"
"Eh…? But...wouldn't I just be intruding?"
She tilted her head. "What makes you think that?"
"Because you all have unfinished business with that place. An outsider like me shouldn't intrude…"
"Oh, don't say that. It's been a long two years for Kazuto-san. I'm sure that he would love nothing more than to fight side by side with you. I mean, I sure won't mind."
"Really? Thank you, Keiko-chan. That means a lot to me."
They continued chatting about their personal lives.
Meanwhile, at the barstool…
"You know, I think that I start fresh on ALO." Kazuto expressed. "The only thing I'll import is the avatar name. Everything else is back to square one."
"That sounds...fun in its own way. Why, though?" Rin asked.
"Kirito's role as the hero of Aincrad has been fulfilled. From now on, I'm just Kirito, someone who can't be bothered with magic in a game where magic is ubiquitous."
"Hmmm…"
"What do you think?"
"...Maybe it's because I've lived my whole life with essentially two names, but I can't separate my real self with virtual self. Mizushima Rin is identical to Lynn Mizushima, and so is Riwet. They...I...have the same mind, and share the same ideals...victories…and baggage." He sighed before he shrugged. "But that's just how I see things. You're free to do what you want, and considering how experienced you are, you won't even need much to catch up."
"I hear you." Kirito took his drink and emptied it, raising it and tilting his head up. When he tilted his head back down, he realized that Rin was looking absently in space, muttering something under his breath. He was about to ask him what was up when Keiko and Suguha returned and Rin just snapped out of it without any fuss.

Mizushima Rinnosuke nodded to himself as he nursed their car's gas pedal and steering wheel. The vehicle responded immediately, keeping their speed and lane as the road curved slightly.
Despite having access to a driver, something was liberating about being the one to control where he was going. He loved that sense of freedom.
He looked to his side and saw his son, his body twisted to the side as he leaned and looked out of the side window.
His mind flashed back to some time ago. Rin was smaller back then, but he held the same pose.
It was like nothing had changed.
"I can't believe those women bonded so quickly despite not meeting before." Rinnosuke said, starting a conversation. "I don't know why they'd kick us out, though."
Rin chuckled. "Yep, considering that you have no patience with shopping."
"Hey, I don't pitch a fit when we're shopping for shoes."
"Yup. And that's about the only thing you're interested in."
"And the only thing you're interested in is the trip to the local fast food store afterward."
"Indeed."
"No shame in admitting it, eh." Something caught Rinnosuke's eye and he nodded over to it. "Ooh. Look at that. Sexy, right? Shame about the fashion sense, though."
Rin looked, and then pursed his lips "...that's a cat. And yeah, those clothes look dumb."
"Yup. Ooh, what about that one, though?"
"...that's a grandma."
"Yeah…but what about that one? That one looks nice."
"...I'm already taken."
Rinonosuke chuckled. "I've never heard of that one before."
"Yeah, well if I don't screw things up, then be prepared to hear that from now on."
It was their usual romp. The two of them would engage in all kinds of random stuff and Rinnosuke would interrupt him by looking at literally anything and call it attractive.
"By the way, how's the therapy going?"
"Hmm…" Riwet pondered. "I felt better on my own just by resting after this was all over, but I still consulted the doctor and psychologist. They couldn't make a definitive conclusion, other than my body and brain still acclimating from everything that's happened. For now, they advised some self-monitoring and good health habits. It's working so far."
"That's good. There's no shame in asking for help. I've known some people who dismiss and downplay those kinds of things until it was too late. Don't be like them."
"I won't."
Rinnosuke almost opened his mouth to mention that his son was keeping a box cutter with no blade under his pillow, but he figured that it was not the time.
There was a moment of silence. It was normal for them, as Rinnosuke knew his son
Rinnosuke took a deep breath and clenched his jaw for a second. "...do you know why I'm like that towards Tetsu?" He started.
"No. It sounds like a very long story that neither of you wasn't comfortable telling."
"It is. But after talking to him made me more willing to…"
"Right…" He nodded. "Tetsu and I...we go way back. We went to the same university. I was part of the media club with him. We dealt with all kinds of stuff with regards to tech, from collating important local news to providing videos on internet etiquette. Tetsu joined because he wanted to further his journalism skills. I joined because I was an idiot when it came to that stuff."
He paused. "Back then, the Mizushima Financial group was small - way smaller than what you, and even your mother was accustomed to. We were vulnerable to all things - things like changing economies and market trends, investment expectations differing from real-life results-"
"-And other companies making a move."
"During that time, we were under pressure to merge with another company. That company's founder...let's call them Person A….they employed every single trick to do so. Your grandfather to this day still won't talk to me about that, but I remember him trying to hide how stressed out he was. One time, I passed by him, and he reeked of cigarette smoke. And that was coming from someone who saw your great-grandfather die at a relatively young age directly because of being a severe chain-smoker."
Rinnosuke frowned. "I hated seeing him that way. I asked if there was anything I could do. Despite him being exhausted, he just smiled at me and shook his head. He said that I was just a kid, and I should enjoy my youth and leave these kinds of things to the adults. I didn't agree with that statement, so I employed what I learned in that club to do some research. I don't know if it's because of sheer dumb luck or anything, but I found extremely incriminating evidence."
"With the help of Tetsu, I was able to send the information to the police without leaving any tracks. It didn't take long before we heard the news of Person A being blasted in the news...as well as their suicide. See, the reason that they were so set on gaining our company was that they had an affair with another person, and that money was used to support that person's family. In an ironic twist, person A's company ended up failing, and ultimately, it was sold to the Mizushima Group."
He let the statement hang in the air before he continued. "After that fiasco, Tetsu and I just...drifted apart. It's why I left the country and went to Canada - just to forget about all of it, at least for a while. For the longest time, I didn't know if Tetsu blamed me for spilling blood on his hands. But I know that he was pissed at me for jumping the gun." He gritted his teeth. "I was so focused on being right and being so set on delivering my brand of justice that I didn't think about what happened next. All I thought about was punishing who I thought were the bad guys, and not realizing that the world isn't black and white and has so much nuance. Such a long time had passed...but I can still recall it to this day."
Riwet silently nodded at his story. "...do you regret it?"
"...do I regret not thinking things through? Definitely. Do I regret helping my father? Definitely not."
"...who knows about it?"
"Tetsu, Linda, and Sakura know. I didn't tell my father, but I think he figured it out. That's about it."
"...then I'm glad you trust me enough to tell that story. How'd your talk with Ayano-san go earlier, if you don't mind me asking."
"Well, it was a bit awkward. But we talked and started to clear the air. We're grown adults, so don't worry about us too much."
"I see. I mean, I was never worried. I knew you two would be friends again."
"How can you be so sure?"
Rin shrugged. "Like daughter, like father."
The two shared a chuckle.
Rin looked in the distance. He took a deep breath and clenched his jaw for a moment. "I'd like to tell you something, as well." He started.
Red players...the Laughing Coffin...and the purge.
Rinnosuke silently listened to him, trying to hide his surprise. From the stories he told before, he figured that his son wasn't one of the ones who stayed behind in a safe space. But he didn't expect him to participate in such a thing.
"At first, we thought we could intimidate or just hurt them a bit into surrendering, and everybody gets to walk away alive. But when stuff went down, I didn't complain. It didn't matter if it was a game. I killed someone, and after a few months, I was over it." Rin concluded.
"...I'm glad that you told me this." Rinnosuke finally said. "Have you confided with anyone else?"
"My friends from SAO know all about it. Some of 'em were with me. I also told the psychologist. And like they said, self-monitoring and all that stuff..." He pursed his lip and frowned.
"I see." Rinnosuke replied. "Well, everyone has different ways to cope with whatever life threw at them."
"But doesn't that make me a monster? Right now, I don't feel bad at all, and if I had to, I would've done it again."
"Absolutely not. Do your friends think you're a monster? Does Keiko-chan?"
"No."
"They damn well better not. Because I don't. You made a call, and you dirtied your hands to help others. Even if you didn't feel bad about it, a monster wouldn't spend a second thinking about it. Hell, a monster wouldn't even bother helping."
There was a moment of silence. "...regardless of what I think...the next question is...what next?" Rin asked. "Do I still do what comes to me naturally, even if it meant more dirty business, or do I try to become someone...better...different?
"I...can't claim to have an answer for that. It's easy for me to just say 'do the right thing and win' when reality is so much more nuanced and complicated, especially when you have to make a decision quickly." Rinnosuke admitted. "But what I know that deep down, you are acting with good intentions."
He took a look at his son. "You're not gonna be a kid forever. Sooner or later, you'll have to make some tough decisions. Hearing from you, you've already made some. You won't always have the answers to the problems that ail you, and that's alright. Because nobody does. Any hey, if you can't figure it out, you can always ask for help. And seeing how packed that cafe was, help isn't too far off."
"...thanks for the talk, Dad."
"Don't mention it, bud." He said before he reached out and patted his son's head for a moment. After that, he let out a deep breath. "You know what? All this serious talk's making my hair even whiter than it already is. What do you say we stop by and get a bacon double cheeseburger?"
Rin smiled. "You know I won't say no to that."
Rinnosuke made a detour, driving them to the nearby burger fast food joint. They ordered, took a seat, and after a few minutes, received their orders and started eating.
"But still, even though you were trapped in a death game, you found the time to get a girlfriend. You've certainly got your priorities right." Rinnosuke quipped.
"That is so not what happened. I was focused on making myself stronger. I'm grateful that I met her, but that was pure coincide-...are you even listening to me?" He interrupted himself when he saw Rinnosuke staring at the side.
Rinnosuke let out a mock sigh. "Ah...my son's all grown up now. Soon, he'll leave me to live his life with that woman. It wasn't even too long that I was changing your diaper, you know? I remember one time that you pooped right after I had to change it. You made so much mess."
"You wanna stop talking about poop when we're eating?" Rin replied, but showed no sign of being disgusted as he bit into his burger.
"You even had the smuggest damn look on your face that time. Like 'yeah, you're gonna be cleaning that up for a while, loser.' you were saying that with just your expression."
"Damn. It's like I'm talking to a brick wall or something. Hey, you stink, stinky."
Rinnosuke gasped. "I don't stink!"
"...really? That's what you paid attention to? Are you actually turning senile, right in front of my burger?"
"...who are you? Where's my son?" Rinnosuke said, mimicking an old person's voice.
The two continued their banter as they ate.

New Aincrad
"H..hello. My name is Keiko Ayano. I like to eat sweet things, and I don't like spicy food. Nice to meet you!" Silica said in English.
"Hmmm…"
"..."
"..."
"Riwet."
"Hm?"
"My eyes are down here."
"Mhm." He replied as he continued staring at her cat-like ears.
"Muuu..." She puffed her cheeks and huffed.
He chuckled. "Don't worry. I'm paying attention." He said before he very lightly poked her ears. Her ears twitched as a response.
"Kyuru! Nice to meet you!" Pina chirped. Her accent was stilted but understandable.
Riwet chuckled. "Wow. Everybody's learning English. This is pretty great."
The two of them were sitting inside a room in a living area located at New Aincrad's Starting City. It was fairly spacious, consisting of a bed at the side and a table at the center. Pina was laying on a small bed at the center of the table.
After placating her parents' concerns, Keiko came back to the virtual world. Like many others similar to her - an SAO Incident survivor who decided to come back to the virtual world - she was able to transfer her SAO avatar to ALO. She chose the Cait Sith to better support Pina.
There was some excitement when Riwet first laid eyes on her new avatar. He was unceremoniously logged out and logged back in, explaining that his AmuSphere detected a sudden surge of intense emotion. Ever since then, he could barely take her eyes off her ears.
"Anyways, here are my thoughts, and a little bit of advice. First off, I like that you're trying to change your accent, but it feels a little too...forced?...that some of what you're saying is a little hard to understand. For me, it's okay if it's subdued and even stilted as long as I can understand you." Riwet continued his observation, giving some examples but keeping his suggestions vague for Silica to come up with a solution that felt natural to her. It reminded her of her early days adventuring with him.
Silica nodded and diligently took notes. "Okay...I see…" She stopped writing once she realized that Riwet had stopped talking. She looked up and saw him staring at her absently.
She tilted her head. "...Rin…?"
That seemed to snap him out of it. "Huh?"
"You were zoning out. Are you alright?"
"Oh, you were just so cute that I lost track of what I was saying."
She felt her face heat up and instinctively looked away. "Geez..t."
"Sorry, sorry." He said before he reached out and patted her head. "Just to be clear, though. Your English is already good - so much better than other people your age. My Dad always said that being good at English would open so many doors for me. So keep at it. "
She turned her head back and smiled at him. "I will."
"Kyururu!" They heard a trill. Pina had flown onto Silica's shoulder and started nuzzling.
"What's wrong? Did you miss me?" She asked.
"Maybe she's hungry. Her food bowl's empty."
"But I remember putting a lot in that."
"..."
"..."
"That's probably it, isn't it?"
"Kyuru!"
"Well, let's settle on both."
They decided to take a short break from studying. Silica filled Pina's bowl with peanuts. Then, she laid on her bed and stared at the ceiling. "...back when SAO turned into a death game, I remember looking at this ceiling for hours on end...just...numb. It felt like yesterday and forever ago, both at the same time."
"Same for me. It was a good thing I was able to power through that instead of doing something that I'd regret."
"Me too…" She raised her arm and looked at the back of her hand. "You know, it's a little weird...we've fought tooth and nail for so long to rid ourselves of being trapped in this death game, but the moment it shows up as a game, we flock towards it with no hesitation."
"I think we're outliers on that part. Remember - only a fraction of us ventured out of the Starting City, and out of that, many wound up regretting it. I can't imagine those people coming back here, much less them going back to virtual reality. Can't blame them, really."
"You're right...but for me, I feel like I have unfinished business here in Aincrad. I'm grateful for being released without having to go through the rest of the death game, but now that our lives aren't in danger…"
"Maybe we can have some real fun instead of whatever crap we had to deal with."
The two stayed like that for a short while before Riwet clapped his hands. "Alright, that's enough of a break. We're done with English for now. Algebra's the last thing for tonight." He stated.
Silica groaned. "Algebraaa….whyyyy do you exiiiiiist~" She slowly got up and joined Riwet.
Despite her protests, Silica was content that their most important matter to deal with was academics and not strategic decisions that would either lead to her triumph or death.
Eventually, there was a knock on the door. The two shared a glance. Silica went to the door and Riwet cleared the table.
Kirito and Asuna came in. "Good evening." Asuna greeted.
"Welcome, welcome. Take a seat anywhere you like." Silica greeted back.
The four of them got situated.
Riwet and Kirito excitedly manipulated their Player Menus. Riwet opened a display window about the size of a monitor and placed it on the far end wall.
"It's rare to see the two of you so hyped up about something that isn't related to fighting or loot." Asuna commented.
"While I agree, Meruru watch night is a big deal." Riwet replied.
Kirito brought snacks and distributed them amongst the group. "Snacks, check."
Riwet slid one last option in his Player Menu. The interior lighting slowly dimmed until the display window was the only source of illumination. "Lights...check."
Silica opened her Player Menu and brought out a blanket. She leaned beside Riwet and draped it around the both of them. Pina flew in and sat on Silica's lap. "Comfiness...check." Silica said.
Asuna did the same to Kirito. "Check."
"And now...bam." Riwet said as he pressed play.
"Stardust Witch Meruru, start~"
And the rest of the night was spent peacefully watching anime.
Chapter End
A/N: Hi. Guess what? My temp employer made good on their promise, as I was quickly assigned to another position at another company shortly after writing the previous chapter. Meaning one step closer to permanent job security, but also significantly less free time. And worse for this fic and my free time, I'm planning on registering for a certain career development course that'll last for a couple of years, which is gonna start soon as well. So whatever time I have after work would be spent studying.
I honestly don't know what my schedule for this fic would be moving forward, but I can definitely tell that it's gonna take me much longer per chapter to write. I'm sorry. All I can promise is that despite all of that, I don't want to stop writing.
Not much to say about this chapter, other than a lot of changes to the celebration as a consequence of me changing parts of the story. One part I want to talk about specifically is Suguha's knowledge of Aincrad going over to ALO. No way in hell she didn't know about that before it was implemented.
Thanks for the review EpicSlayerGuy99. Considering the tease in this chapter, as well as me nuking SuguhaxKirito into oblivion, I don't think Sakura's gonna go that route.
That's all for now. Thank you very much, and have a good one
