Goren paced side to side in front of the Captain's office. He arrived a half an hour earlier than he usually would which made him a whole hour earlier than everyone else. He was a restless ball of energy despite being completely exhausted. He wasn't able to get much rest, last night. Instead, he compensated with 3 cups of coffee. Now, he was bouncing on his heels with nervousness and a jittering amount of caffeine in his body.
The captain arrived. About 40 minutes earlier than his detectives to catch up on his messages and look over paperwork. Files and paperwork in hand, he shuffled towards the front door of his office. He let out a breath when he saw Goren.
"Detective. What is it? You look entirely too..I don't know but I haven't had my coffee yet. Can this wait?"
"Uh.."
"Captain Ross, annoyed but concerned since Goren didn't usually greet him in front of his office tried to come up with a reason in his head while trying to will himself patience the conversation at hand. "Well, can you at least get me a cup of coffee from the break room while I attempt to get settled in here."
"Uh yeah, i can do..."
The captain just stared at him waiting for him to attend to the task.
"Oh, Right," Goren responded realizing he had been standing in front of the captain longer than expected. He shuffled down the corner to the break room to turn on the pot to make fresh coffee and waited a beat, hoping to collect his thoughts.
Goren returned with fthe resh hot coffee and handed him the cup.
"What is this about? What couldn't wait 'til normal working hours?"
"Well, it's just..i guess..I think ...It may be best."
"Detective out with it," Captain Ross mused while sipping his coffee like it was a magical elixar.
"I think it would be best if i put in a transfer, Sir."
At that point, the Captain almost spit out his coffee.
"What! You just got back and you want a transfer? You practically begged me to come back and all the hoops we had to jump through to even bring you back, and you are telling me you want to leave. No, absolutely no."
"I don't want to leave but..."
"But, what? Are you being pressured?"
"I just think it would be the best thing for us."
"This is about Eames. Look, I get she's angry but this will pass. She'll get on board."
"I don't know. Look, it's only fair I leave instead of her."
"No one is leaving. Why would anyone need to leave? You two are my best detectives. I don't want either of you to leave."
"But we're not working out. I don't think she wants to work with me anymore."
"She will. Do I need to talk to her?"
"No, sir. I don't think that will be a good idea. Look, just send me anywhere there's an opening."
"No. Work it out."
"C'mon Cap, I can do almost anything, as long as it's challenging enough."
"You have challenge enough here. Find a way to work with someone, who is not your biggest fan, and persuade her why she should trust you again. You don't need to leave for a challenge. I get that it's not exactly ideal and you're still getting heat from the Tessarossa case but we need you here. Simple, as that."
"Yes, Sir."
"So, how are things going with the other officers."
"As expected, I went against our own. Not many follow my guiding principle of righteous and truth."
"You'd let me know if anyone was messing with you, right?"
"Uh.."
"Who?"
"I don't know. It could be anybody. Look, it'll stop eventually. They're just upset like with the Copa thing."
"What have they done?"
"Captain...I don't want to get into it. I didn't come to you for that."
"Too bad. Look, I'm not going to do anything but I need to know what's going on in my house."
"Fine. I've been spat on, beer spilled on me when I'm out, ignored about requests, called names. I found a dead rat in my desk when I got back."
"Your opinion, just a scare tactic or do you think there was a threat behind that?"
"Uh, May be just a scare tactic or may be a message. I may not get help or coverage out in the field."
"That's unacceptable."
"Captain."
"I don't care if my detectives don't get along. But, they will not put each other in harm's way out there."
"Now, you said that you weren't going to do anything. You say something, what's that going to look like? I ran over to you complaining the other guys are being mean. Now, who's going to have my back then?" Goren spread out his hands palm up to demonstrate his point and put on his best convincing act, "It will pass and we have to let it run it's course. Otherwise, things are only going to get worse."
"Does Eames know?"
"Yeah. She's got my back," Goren lied. He wasn't about to make things about him again. If he wanted things to get to normal, he had to go along with what she wanted. He needed to gain her trust and respect. This could wait. Technically, if things went south, she would have my back. No doubt. No matter what we are dealing with.
"Detective, same thing with Eames. It'll pass. You guys have a good partnership. You'll work it out. Keep your head down. Do the work.
"Yes, Captain."
